I came in for brunch today and, as always, Madre did not disappoint! I had the avocado toast with sunny side up eggs and it was amazing super tasty and the portion was big. My friend ordered the green chilaquiles and they were just as delicious. For drinks, my friend had the hot café de olla and I had the Abuelita iced latte ( 1/2 sweet). It was perfect! This is my 5th time coming back, and I'll definitely keep returning. The service today was great our server Xiomara and the manager Andrea were both incredibly attentive and welcoming. This is such a cute gem in the area! My teen son had seen all the hype about it on IG and asked me to take him. So glad we visited. We went during the week around lunch time hour. We were seated immediately, despite thinking we might have to wait a long time because they appeared busy. We ordered the flight aqua Fresca which were all super delicious. My son ordered the fruity pebble pancakes where they even did a full presentation when they served it to him. He loved it! Uufff this is rough just like most of the other Madres locations. Stop paying "foodie influencers" to bring in people when you should be paying for more staff to keep up with the crowds. I came across a Latina foodie and all of her paid posts are to bring people in and then the places aren't good and not prepared for the temporary influx. The one positive about this place was that the service was excellent. However, the decor is distractingly tacky, and the food was mostly sugar based and very artificial tasting. We ordered the journey pancakes--which were described as strawberry pancakes. Instead they were strawberry "flavored" pancakes (neon pink) drowned in a Pepto-Bismol colored sauce and covered in sprinkles. The pancakes themselves were claggy/gummy, not like pancakes at in in terms of taste or texture. This is the kind of place I would have designed when I was a little girl, or food I would expect from a mid-level amusement park: psychedelic colors, gigantic images of flowers and butterflies all over the walls, neon lit signs, a neon pink menu, and neon pink food covered in sugar sauce--no consideration of nutrients, flavor, natural ingredients, or a pleasant atmosphere. We also ordered an omelette and bacon which were passable, but not memorable. The pancakes were so bad that we told the manager they were inedible, and to his credit, he took the item off the bill. However, this is a very expensive brunch for there being so little food in the food. Overall, given the obnoxious decor and food with colors you would not find in nature, it seems like this place was designed so people could put images on Instagram, not so they could experience delicious flavors. Very surprised location is tucked inside downtown Monrovia. The layout and decor is very hip! Small free parking in the back is a major plus! We ordered mole chiliaquiles and pistachio waffles. I was really looking forward to the meal because I have been to the Long Beach location and had a good experience. The birria had no flavor and was not warm, the beans were seasoned well but were cold. The server was not that friendly but the manager was nice and was able to take it off the bill. The mazapan latte was delicious. It was just not mixed that well. The inside is very nice with beautiful artwork on the walls. It's very clean. It is very expensive for the quality. My order was brought incorrectly so had to be made again and took more time. Mine was probably the hottest out of all the plates, the mole sauce was good and the chilaquiles were sautéed nicely. I had the Churro French Toast and it was very sweet but not too sticky sweet, oh and they use brioche bread (huge plus in my book). Daughter ordered the Avocado Toast Sampler (also brioche). Everything hit the spot. I was tempted to try the late flight but ordered the Horchata Latte and it was delicious! It was extremely basic and lacked flavor. The egg wasn't even poached, it was served over-easy. I had to drench my food in salsa just to give it some taste. We also ordered the omelette plate, which looked very plain and unappetizing. There was no real flavor in any of the dishes. To make matters worse, they charge per item for the omelette, which felt unreasonable for the quality. Honestly, we would have been more satisfied going to Norms.
