The lady who works there did not see friendly at all, in fact she was very rude when my boyfriend complained about the beer being warm. I chose this restaurant based on a recommendation from my hotel. The inside of the restaurant was quaint with the atmosphere of Spain. Very comfortable booth seating with well appointed throw pillows as well as a large bar. The fabric on booth side could use a thorough cleaning. I started with a glass of the Tempranillo and it didn't disappoint followed by an order of the Espana Olive Bowl. There were a variety of olives that were complimented with tomatoes and garlic and lightly seasoned with salt. I could have eaten the entire dish but opted to continue to order from the next section of the menu My next order was the Soasar Atún. The ahi tuna was cooked and seasoned perfectly. It was garnished with spinach and tomatoes with a light dressing. I very much enjoyed this dish and once again held back on eating only half. My next order was the Scallop en crème saffron. Unfortunately, they took the scallops off the menu due to the cost (darn supply chain issues). My next choice was the Gambia's Al Allio. I question if I was actually eating prawns vs shrimp based on size and appearance. The dish came with a delicious broth and crostinis. This was my least favorite dish. The seafood was tough and a bit chewy; possibly over cooked. The seafood also came with the shells on, which I didn't mind. Plan to get your hands dirty. The broth was very good as were the crostinis. Better yet was the crostinis dipped in the broth. If the seafood wasn't overcooked, this dish would have been perfect. The service was very good. Because the restaurant was slow (I was the only patron) I was helped by the waitstaff AND the chef. While the chef was only 25 years old, I was very impressed with his cooking and attention to detail. The waitress was attentive but not overly, which I appreciated as I wanted to also read a book while I sat. I'm giving 4 stars because of the cleanliness of the place and the Gambia's Al Allio. Randomly stopped in for some food late at night. They serve till 1am which is nice. The owner Amanda was working. I ordered a glass of Cabernet and some steak tapas (can't remember the name). The wine was excellent, and the crust on my tapas was amazing. Flaky and buttery and not dry at all. They make their dough from scratch. The steak was cooked nicely, moist and good flavor. The décor/ambiance is amazing. You feel like you've entered another country. The bathrooms are even beautifully decorated and CLEAN! I love attention to detail and presentation and Madrid tapas nailed it! You can tell Amanda has a passion for what she does. They have an extensive wine and liquor selection. I used to really love this place...until my last visit. It started with the front door being locked; we should have taken that as a sign. Once we were allowed in, we were told to sit wherever we wanted among the empty tables. Our waiter then came to our table and asked if we had a reservation. We attempted to order cocktails but were told the bar had no sour so we opted for beer. We then decided on several tapas but when we ordered, the waiter stopped us from ordering more after the first 2 items because they would take the cook/owner "30 minutes to make" and we could order more later. What?!!! But, it turns out, he really was doing us a favor because when our first item arrived, it was awful. It was the $15 Bread with Tomato Board and it consisted of burnt bread and FOUR grape tomatoes. It was inedible given the foundation of the dish was burnt. (Picture provided) The second item we were allowed to order arrived shortly after and was mediocre at best but at least edible. When the waiter finally came back to take the rest of our order I told him we would not be ordering anything else because the first thing we ordered was inedible. He seemed shocked and said "well my owner made it" to which I responded, "well, I'm saying, she did not do a good job." He said he would tell her and then proceeded to ignore us for 30 minutes. When he finally did come back to check in, I apologized for possibly being rude to him because I realize he didn't burn our food. He responded he just wanted us to be happy but did absolutely nothing to fix the situation. We returned the first dish, were still charged for it and left hungry. $80 that could have been much better spent. In addition, the place is filthy, the owner lifts her shirt to show off her back and stomach tattoos and bra while working and there are insect droppings on the ledge that runs around the brick wall of the restaurant. read more

A friend & I went here for dinner the other night. The atmosphere is so magical, like walking into another little world. We started with a few drinks- I had the Madrid G&T- it was great! This is an interesting and different restaurant. They have appetizer type meals that your table can share. I recommend the meat and cheese platter as a good starter. It has a variety of cheeses, meats, some crackers, jelly, and a small portion of fresh fruit. The food is presented very well and the service is great. The experience makes it worth checking out at least once. I think if I went back it would be for coffee and lunch to sit outside and enjoy their nice courtyard. The prices are a bit steep. A drink was $8 and the food adds up quickly. Since the food is lighter portions with small amounts of bread you could eat a decent amount. Madrid Tapas is a little gem! Although our service was a bit slow, we certainly did not mind. We were able to choose from a wide variety of tapas. We especially enjoyed the cheese board, dates wrapped in bacon and salmon mousse. The cheese board was a delicious array of cheddar, havarti with basil, Brie, some other hard cheeses, salami with mozzarella, grapes, strawberries, jams, and baguette toasts. Beautifully presented! Passing through Green Bay we were surprised everything closed so early! We went to one place based on Yelp reviews- it was closed. They sent us downtown to another place- it was closed. They sent us to Madrid Tapas and we were hesitant but what a pleasant surprise! I read mixed reviews on here but it sounds like pretty superficial things to be upset with (not having a wine bottle you want, pricey things, owners kids, etc). We had a wonderful experience from beginning to end! First, we absolutely loved that it was family owned. We didn't mind that aspect at all. We loved hearing the history of the Spanish grandmother. Second, our server Martin was awesome. He made incredible recommendations, was very friendly and was prompt with everything. Third, the food far exceeded our expectations. Each dish was so flavorful. We tried lots of things from the menu, including one of the paella's. All were prepared perfectly and we were so full by the end! The food quality of this place is 5/5. Everything else is lack luster. I went to their old location and was hoping that the service and atmosphere would be better. When we sat down at the bar it took about 4-5 minutes before we were acknowledged and helped (disclaimer: We were the only people in this place). We then were given menu's which had wine on one side and tapa options on the other. I selected the moscoto and we ordered two food plates. The lavender beef crustini had good flavor but could have used more sauce. The peppers with sea salt, garlic and olive oil were my favorite. I could eat a lot of those little things. The bathrooms were frigid cold and there was a painting on the floor in my stall I used. I would maybe go back for the food but this place could use a bit of improvement. read more

Just like many of the mixed reviews, I'm in between. This is such a beautiful spot that has so much potential, unfortunately it probably needs better management. I don't blame the owners though, they have tons of children it seems and they're also trying to run their business but, it looks like there may be too many children working and only children working. I saw this alleyway driving down Adams and wanted to try. We didn't know what to expect. The front door said "enter through the back", we went in where we were greeted by the male owner who asked if we had a reservation. We didn't know we needed one but he took us in anyway. We just popped in for drinks. Atmosphere is beautiful and decor is on point, for aesthetics but place is dirty unfortunately. Had a 6-7 year old boy serving water to customers and other children taking orders and bringing food out. We only had one drink each and they were just okay. STAY AWAY....I'm positive you will have a better dining experience anywhere else. If I could give zero stars, I would. I had no idea food could be cooked this poorly. This place is easily the worst dining experience I have had in recent memory. The service was slow, the food is atrocious and should never be listed in the same category of what traditional Spanish Tapas should taste like or look like. Shrimp - had to be spit out. Patatas bravas - Just potato chunks smothered in butter. Edible but not what this dish should taste like. Chicken paella - this dish was way over cooked, over salted, and we had to scrape the burnt rice off the dish to even get a half spoonful. We gave up after the first bite. We ordered 8 dishes, to try a wide variety, and were disappointed in everything. In the end, they simply presented us with an iPad for the full amount and stood over me waiting for the tip. Unfortunately, this place doesn't even deserve a single star. I heard about them few months back and finally had a chance to visit. It's just out right dirty. Cobwebs, dust, stained glasses, half removed Christmas decorations on dinning tables, stained upholstery. I am not sure how they are still open and running. My wife and I finally had a chance to stop in for dinner at Madrid this past week, and we were really looking forward to coming in as we are big fans of Spanish food in general. Madrid's is a small, cozy, well appointed restaurant with no parking area (park on the street or in the ramp right next to it). It is beautifully decorated inside, quiet with a really nice bar area and a bunch of tables against the opposite wall. As we sat down, we were given both the wine and tapas menu. The wine menu is very nice, with a moderate amount of wines in all price categories. It's nice to see such a well thought out selection of wines! The wines ranged from by the glass (house and a good selection of others) for $6-$13, to bottles from $28-$200. You could tell that the owners put some thought into their selection. We started with some vermouth, which just happened to be the same brand that we bring back from Spain with us each time we go. It was served a little differently in a Sherry glass instead of in a tumbler with ice and an orange peel, but good none the less. After the vermouth we each had a different glass excellent Rioja, and both went very well with our food. As for the food, it is served tapas style (small plates to share), so be prepared to order a bunch and they come out as finished (as they should), so you may want to order a few, wait, and then order more. We ordered the pan tomate, seafood tapas size paella, asada pulpo, lavender carne asada, lettuce hearts, and tuna tartare. This was a perfect amount of food for two hungry people. All of the food was well seasoned, with a nice touch of salt added to finish the dish. The tuna tartare was excellent, served with perfectly ripe avocado, nice olive oil, and nicely peppery arugula. Unfortunately, each of the other dishes fell a bit flat, and each had some issues. The pan tomate was made with some wonderful tasting bread, but we got no fresh tomato or olive oil taste but of it. The asada pulpo, which we were really looking forward to, had a nice mashed potatoes and olive oil sauce, but was oddly mushy in the outside while being stringy on the inside. The actual paella in the seafood paella was good - well seasoned and well prepared, but not overally fresh. With the dish, you receive two shrimp, two mussels and some octopus. The shrimp were good and cooked perfectly, the octopus had the same strange texture as the pulpo dish, and the mussels were just plain horrible - tough, stringy and tasted old. The lavendar carne asada was well prepared and served on some very tasty bread. The lavendar was a touch heavy for our tastes, but it was still a good dish and something different. The lettuce hearts with blue cheese mousse were okay. We liked the blue cheese, but the lettuce was warm and a bit wilted. The service was polite, courteous, and attentive with a good knowledge of menu. Overall, Madrid's is a place we will come back to try for some pre-dinner drinks, and maybe a tapas or two, but we left feeling underwhelmed. We thought the quality of food did not match the price being charged and that the food itself was average at best; however we really liked the wine selection and ambiance of the place. read more

The food and wine is very good. Four star quality. The menu was fresh, unique. Bottom line the food was excellent. The chef and waiter was one in the same the day we were there. He is also the owner operator. A sign of financial trouble perhaps or employee no show. I noted the floors needed a good vacuum. The table linens were dirty. The linen napkin had bread crumbs in it when I opened it. This the reason for the three stars. It's really to bad because the guy does an awesome job with food and seems to be a good guy and I want to see him succeed. He just can't do it all, cook, wait, run a business and clean. Came in early on a Friday night and enjoyed a wonderful meal. Sat at the bar and was greeted by Nate, who was professional and knowledgeable not only about the wine and beers but the food as well. We ordered the lavender carne crostini, the salmon crostini, the bacon wrapped dates, and the fig jam crostini. Everything was delicious, the fig jam and the salmon are two cant miss dishes. Our night ended with a bartender selected port that both myself and my wife enjoyed greatly. We tried this place after a positive review we saw on the news. I'll start with the positives; the outdoor seating area is beautiful. Lots of plants and an intimate setting. They have nice Spanish music playing in the background to give the place a nice vibe. Well done there. Our reservation was for 7:30pm on Friday. We arrived earlier than anticipated, however we were still seated right away. The young hostess told us we could sit any where we wanted. She gave us menus and said that she would be back with water. Here's where things started to go south. The water she brought us was luke-warm. We forgave that and anxiously looked at the menus in anticipation of good drinks and food. The waiter (who we'll call "Ryan") took our drink order. We Started with two glasses of Sangria. That was a let down. We could have made better sangria at home in our kitchen. Some time went by, and "Ryan" came around again and asked us if we wanted more drinks and if we were ready to order. We ordered 5 tapas total. He then asked would we like anything else to drink. We asked for a recommendation. He smiled and said "You should try the 'RyanRita' it's named after me because it's my own recipe." We agreed to try them and they were not all that. Now, the food was starting to come out of the kitchen. The hostess was also running food that night. She brought our first dish. We looked at the table and there was no silverware. So we asked her for silverware and napkins. She said "Ok! I'll be right back!" She didn't return. The table across from us was having the same problem. So, "Ryan" came to check in on us about 10 minutes after that and I said we needed silverware. He looked at me perplexed and said, "Oh you don't have any silverware?" I replied no. We asked the host about 15 minutes ago for silverware and she never returned. By this time 3 out of the 5 tapas that we ordered are now on the table. "Ryan" finally returned with silverware 10 minutes later, sat them down on the table and walked away. No apology, just walked away. The artichoke dish that we had was very tasty. Full of flavor, I would suggest this dish. Now our steak dish was a different story. The hostess comes over to the table and said, "Here's a steak knife." We cut into the steak and it was overdone and dry. The Paella was dry, over-cooked as well as the shrimp on top of it. The bread on our other tapas was hard and slightly burnt. Needless to say we were over the experience at this point in time. Think that I'm done now? Nope! There's more. "Ryan" got into a heated exchange with a woman who worked there (I believe that those two are married). So here comes the bill. "Ryan" sits the bill on the table and walks off. It came to $90 and some change. We thought whatever. "Ryan" returned a couple of minutes later with a tablet in his hands and was scrolling through and says, "I forgot to add your 'RyanRitas' to the bill. he took the old bill off of the table punch in some information on his tablet and held out his hand. My partner reluctantly gave him his card and he stood there and ran our transaction through. Then he says, "Sign and tip here." He STOOD there and watched. it was almost like we were bullied to leave him a tip. That's our story. So if you want food that at best is mediocre, a server with an over inflated sense of self, and eating like an animal with your hands...you may like this place. We wouldn't eat there again for all of the tea in China. read more

Madrid Tapas Restaurant has been on my list of places to check out and one night some friends mentioned that they were going there, so I was totally in! It's a small restaurant downtown on Walnut Street. They don't have their own parking lot, so you have to park on the street, or I would suggest the parking ramp, since it's right by it. Before this place it was this dumpy bar, and did a great job flipping it around. It was dark, but very intimate and calming...perfect if you want to go out on the weekend and not deal with a lot of people or noise. In the back of the restaurant there was outdoor seating, which would be perfect for a summer day. It was raining that day so we had to stay inside. Our server Martin (or Handsome as he joked to us) was fantastic! Very helpful, full of suggestions, and checked on us at the right moment (when my glass was empty). The one thing I didn't like was that there was no beer menu. Martin explained to me that they are primarily known for wine, and the beer selection they have is small and changing a lot since they don't purchase tons of one kind of beer. I kind totally respect that and appreciated his response. Again, Martin made a great suggestion as I had an IPA and a Red ale from some brewery from Illinois. Who knew Illinois could make great beer lol. Friends of mine ordered small plates food and let me try a couple of them. I remember something wrapped in bacon, which was so good because....everything is good with bacon.
