Very neat and clean ambience compared to similar Indian restaurants around. Loved the samba dipped mini idly. Their masala vada is always freshly made. That with Chai is exceptionally good. Their Oothapam is also super yummy. Have been there several times so far and pretty happy. Paper masala dosa was nicely thin, not too fried, chutneys were excellent and the sambar was the best I've had in a very long time. This place is so much like Madurai Idly Kadai (where we are regulars), but is much bigger and much less crowded. I loved the sambar and the chutneys that they served. The idlys were soft and big much like how they are in Madurai. I think this is the cheapest idly dosa fare you can get in the bay area (3 idly + vada was about $5 and a dosa was about $5). It is not at a busy intersection and it took us a while to figure out where this place was. We will definitely come back! Update: I love their onion uthappam (rice savory pancakes). Most of the other places in the Bay Area simply don't get the right way to make this. Either the uthappam is under cooked, or not browned enough or the onions don't stick. Good food and good prices. We visited on a Sunday morning and found it blessedly uncrowded. Only a couple tables were occupied, despite it being peak breakfast hour. I ordered mysore masala dosa, and the wife ordered the pongal & vada combo. Both dishes were made well, and the accompanying sambar and chutneys were also good. Wonderful place for Fresh South Indian food. I love the Idlis, Wadas and Masala Dosas here. They are absolutely awesome! Additionally, they serve with a smile on the face. Looks like a family run business and the lady is always ready to help with any extra condiments that you want. Though, there is one weird quirk here. They need to get the correct type of Paper towels for the dispenser they have next to the spoons. It is difficult to pull them out! I bet, this is not something you read in reviews often. Can't remove a star for this! Unlike most restaurants, these folks have something else that is wonderful. Two TVs that play the same video and the sound is also in sync! So the food was good. We ordered rava dosa ,2 Masala dosas and rasam. Rasam was below average with large chunks of green leaves which we had to remove to consume it. MASALA dosa was good with a nice sambar and tasty chutneys . The parts which I didn't like : 1. Extremely hot sambar and Rasam were served in low garde plastic bowls. 2 . Their service is very slow. We got our order after waiting almost 30 mins. 3. When I requested the front desk person, can we get just Masala dosa in lieu of rava dosa( if that's taking time), he bombarded with the reply we are only cooking here ,and now your dosa is ready . All three dosas came at different times ,meaning 5- 10 mins apart. Dosa isn't something you eat cold and get a rude answer to your request specially when you are in a restaurant setting. 4. When this person served / slammed rava dosa on the table, some sambar just spilled over the dosa. Spilling is not an issue here, but slamming is. I don't know whether this person did it on purpose or not. I am not going to their restaurant again for such kind of service. P. Horrible service and management. The biggest pain is ordering. The guy was too busy watching TV to hear our order correctly. Asking about ingredients of the dish was met with the response of "Do you want me to bring it here and cook it in front of you?". The restaurant is close to my place hence I gave it multiple tries in the hopes that it will be good buy sadly no. Many dishes might not be available, especially any weekend specials are never there on the weekends. The wait for your food will be long, be prepared for a 30-40 min wait for a simple order. Food is not bad, it varies from okay to acceptable depending on your luck. But then there are way many better places in the area which serve better food without the hassles of this place. Give it a pass for a few months while they sort out their management and kitchen lines properly. read more

I have been a regular at this place for the simple reason, that its close to me. Here is why this place will not be around long. 1) Most of the time, the restaurant is closed 2) Very untidy, dirty plates stay on the tables for ever Today, I ordered two Dosa to go, when came to pick up, I noticed 1 sambar and 1 chutney (each kind) for 2 dosas. When asked the lady argued with me saying she gave me bigger containers as opposed to small containers (which was slightly bigger than the chutney containers but not adequate for 2 dosaa) and hence she would not give more Samber and Chutey. Shame on the owner for False advertising. The store has big sign of All You Can Eat Breakfast but the owner very rudely & in a insulting way refuses to honor that. Instead of removing the false advertisement he argues and bluntly insults you. When we decided to order something from the menu, he wanted us to pay first. We had no problem with that, but he insisted us to leave a TIP, how can we leave a tip without seeing the service and tasting the food. To this the owner got mad and treated us so badly that after charging he just threw my credit card and went inside without giving me my receipt. Such a disaster that instead of asking me that wether I need the receipt or not, he just went inside without saying anything. After pressing his bell for 6-7 times when he came outside, I asked him my receipt, to which he totally refused and told me he cannot give it now. Anyhow we waited for our food, to get more shock. Rawa dosa was the worst I had in my entire life & Kara uthappam was made in a rush, it was raw & had a pungent smell, Idlys looked as if they were frozen and he just warmed it in the microwave and vadas were hard like rock. When we brought this into the owners attention, he bluntly replied- this is how it is made. When we asked him for some extra dipping sauce, he stared at us in such a manner, as if we asked him his Kidney. Please strictly avoid this place, as you will only receive a Rude, Full of Attitude, Insulting owner who will serve you, one of the worst and foul smelling food. This place is a small and cleaner alternative for South Indian food. There are many similar restaurants in the Sunnyvale area - but this is surely worth a try as there are no waiting times and the order arrives super fast. Plus the place is clean and their sambhar is the best. Their chutney also taste very good and I love that they make an effort to make the side dishes taste good. We make it a point to stop at a south indian restaurant for a snack every time we are in south bay and this time we decided to give madurai modern cafe a try. It's a casual place and was clean. The food was oh so finger licking good. We ordered the puri that comes with a side of veg korma and potato sabji and a filter coffee. The coffee was watered down, so wouldn't recommend it but the food was packed with flavors and instantly reminds you of home. Will surely return. read more

We went for a belated Father's Day dinner last night Mind you we've been here at least on 3 other occasions. Went to order and were told that they ran out of chana, but then the story changed to "it will take a long time to prepare". Confused looks all around so we modified that part of the order. It was 6:30 on a Saturday night. What in the actual hell? We ordered fried rice and noodles as well. Asked for soy sauce. The lady at the counter said we don't have any. Seriously? Are you penny pinching? Yes, I think you are. Then my cousin forcefully asked again and they brought out just the tiniest amount that could serve one half of one person. Asked for more and was met with a "what the F?" stare. I'm sorry for inconveniencing you. You do sell food right? Kids ordered mango lassis. Another reviewer commented and it's spot on. DO NOT ORDER lassis. They are pint sized. Even the kids were laughing at the quantity. Don't get me wrong. The food is actually really good. But you literally have to beg for basics here. They don't know the last thing about customer service and apparently aren't aware they are in the food service industry. The lady last night was a complete disaster. Me and my wife wanted to eat some south Indian food and came to this place as for some reason the other place we liked (Sweet magic) was closed that day. We ordered vada sambar, mysore masala dosa, and rava masala dosa. I think they just opened up few days back so the place was empty. Our food came out in less than 10 mins but was not hot as dosa should be when they are freshly made. I was looking for places in Sunnyvale that served dosa and was pleasantly surprised to find this one. At first I thought Madurai Idly Kadai in Sunnyvale had been renamed to this. Apparently not. I think this used to be another Indian restaurant and now is Madurai Modern Cafe. The place is not too big, but not too small either. Half the tables(~4) were occupied when we came here on a Saturday evening at 7:45. We ordered a ghee masala dosa, a rava masala dosa and a podi masala dosa at the counter. We waited for almost 30 mins for our dosa's. That's a really really long time, considering the fact that making a dosa takes no more than a few minutes. Probably understaffed in the kitchen? They didn't even care to inform us that our food is being prepared. We were just about to leave had the food not arrived in the next 2 mins. Also, no one cared to serve us water or have a jug of water at our table. Coming to the food itself, we did like all 3 dosa's. They were cooked well and were brought to us as soon as they were ready. Some places just wait and don't serve the dosa's in time, leaving you with cold dosa's. The pricing was comparable to other places. These guys definitely need to work on speeding up their service. Taking 30 mins for dosa's isn't gonna fly with most customers. read more
