We were in Newport for the weekend. On the last day we ventured to checkout the islands and I'm glad we did. We stopped at Mae's. The ladies working up front were a dynamic duo. They were VERY pleasant the entire time we waited for a table, apprx 20 min, and while we enjoyed a delicious meal. They were friendly and kind to everyone while being efficient as they moved around taking care of everyone that walked thru the door. The folks behind the scenes making the front staff look good had to know what was going on. Food was delicious and hot. Things were moving in and out with ease. Evident to see customers around us were happy. It was great to see some regulars come in and greeted like friends. BIG kudos to this place and the amazing staff. read more

Short version: This place definitely deserves its overall 4.5 stars average! Located in a building that formerly housed a Honey Dew donuts, it's fairly small; there are fewer than 10 booths, plus a small counter with a few stools. Appearance-wise, it's nothing fancy, although they tried to make it homey with 4th of July-themed decorations inside. But don't judge a book by its cover, because the food here is fantastic! Service was pretty good too. I came here Thursday morning with a healthy appetite, and after scanning other Yelp reviews for suggestions, chose a breakfast plate centered by corned beef hash, with scrambled eggs, home fries and toast. The corned beef hash was some of the best I've tasted. It had a slightly different texture than other hash (more strands of corned beef, as opposed to chopped up), but tasted every bit as good as (or perhaps slightly better than) hash I've had from two other outstanding places (Messy's Cafe or Gel's Kitchen, both in West Warwick). It was cooked to a nice blend of chewy and crispy. Now, scrambled eggs and home fries are difficult in two ways ... let me explain: They're difficult to screw up, but it's also very difficult to make them outstanding. Well, both were outstanding at Mae's Place! I can't describe why their scrambled eggs were better than average ... maybe their eggs were fresher or something. As for the home fries, those excelled mainly because of the spices, especially rosemary. The supporting cast of this breakfast - coffee and toast - were fine, though not as outstanding. Two young women managed to keep up with a restaurant that was at about 60 percent capacity, and do it with a smile. My coffee cup never went dry, which is as it should be in a breakfast place. Prices were not unreasonable, considering the quality of the food. While the food rates 5 stars, I can't quite give them a 5-star overall rating, due to relative lack of ambiance, and the restaurant's small size, which would probably prevent me from going there on a weekend. But, I absolutely would return another time I'm off from work on a weekday morning, and try one of their other breakfasts - perhaps jonnycakes. read more

A nice step up from the former Tim & Nikki's, Mae's has a good authentic New York System hot dog, and I enjoyed a brace of them on this cool, rainy day visit along with a hearty cup of chicken orzo soup. My daughters had, respectively, BLT and grilled cheese sandwiches. with a cup of warming and tasty clam chowder. My wife liked her veggie wrap a lot. Generally, the food seems quite good and well-cooked. Seating area is tiny, but service is brisk and turnover is fairly quick, so it's a short wait for those waiting for sit-down service; Mae's also seems to be a popular take-out place, too. Really loved this breakfast find in North Kingstown. Typically I reserve my breakfast orders for Sundays and often spend twice as much for a meal. And I admit driving by Mae's it could be easily missed, and from the outside perhaps doesn't look like anything special. I'm here to say that is certainly not the case. The interior is cozy, welcoming, and showcases some of the kindest staff and the homey feel that many places nowadays often miss. So many great options for breakfast, I had a difficult time choosing between the various types of french toasts and forms of eggs. Eventually I decided to build my own omelette. Mae's is now high on my list in making the top best omelettes I've ever ordered out. Tip: Order with three eggs. Not only are three eggs the standard but also the recipe to a perfectly fluffy omelette. I also added bacon, green peppers, *and just about everything else you could imagine* mixed white cheddar cheese... and the result was magical! Also, there's SOMETHING about the toast from these little diners. Not sure if it's the butter or the toaster used but I appreciate Mae's for this because it's definitely something I could not recreate at home for some reason...Anyways all of this and a side of home fries for under $15! A steal! Thankfully I don't live nearby because I would probably be here every day trying out the specials...too many choices. I'll look forward to returning really soon though! read more

We were staying at an airbnb in the area and picked Mae's kind of at random, planning on having breakfast there the first day and then trying other places for the rest of the time, and ended up going there every day of our stay. The food was excellent and very great value, their RI specialties were terrific (Johnnycakes, biscuits and sausage gravy) as were their regular breakfast items like corned beef hash, blueberry pancakes, or the classic eggs-any-style, and the staff was uniformly warm and friendly. Jackie was our server all three days and made us feel like regulars from the first minute we sat down. Watching her and the rest of the staff operate when we ate at the counter one morning was like watching a well-oiled machine! Wonderful service. Delicious food. Cozy atmosphere. It's very unassuming from the outside which is why we've driven by many times and never stopped in. But that all changed yesterday morning. I was checking out reviews on breakfast places in the area and Mae's has many great reviews so, we headed there. Our waitress was so friendly. My husband said he really liked their coffee because he could actually drink it right away and it wasn't scalding hot. He got the corned beef hash breakfast, one of the best hash's we've had in RI. It's not mush!! I got the country eggs benedict which is such a perfect combination. Two of my favorite breakfast meals - biscuits and gravy and eggs benedict. A perfect combination. First and Foremost, Johnny Cakes!!!!!!!!!!!! Secondly, it is a small place, best chances for a seat at any time, come as a couple. Third, the service is great and fast. The food is amazing; Corned beef is actually corned beef, not the fake canned stuff. The johnny cakes are delicious and bring back great memories.
