Prices have steadily risen, but unfortunately quality has deteriorated as well. Combo lunch is a huge disappointment now with the oily, over battered tempura, sometimes too salty miso soup and dry and tasteless chicken teriyaki. I asked for a glass of water...I looked @ the bottom of it + there was little bits of rice floating around. nasty! Watch out. Don't be deceived by this pretentious place that calls themselves a Japanese restaurant. Beef Teriyaki tastes nothing like teriyaki. But it tasted more like Korean style dish bulgogi with bulgogi sauce. I don't understand how you could get away with that. I am guessing they did that on purpose because bulgogi tastes good but not known enough and they are not capable of making great teriyaki sauce/beef. And their sunomono was also meh. Noodle was bit too hard and it's one of the toughest Japanese dish to mess up. I would expect the pricing to be on more food court like at this quality of food. Too bad it isn't, price's avg or slightly above avg for japanese food. I was hoping my first experience here to be a good one as I convinced my coworker to go for Japanese food this afternoon. But it turned out to be a mistake. Half of my order wasn't coming out until my coworker was almost done his lunch. So I asked the server politely about the order and to clear up the confusion if there was one. It turned out there indeed was a confusion as I thought I ordered lunch box 1 but combo 1 came out instead. That's fine, I guess it's partially my fault. But what the server said whilst she was leaving had me stunned, literally. She was literally ranting in Korean as if I could not hear or understand the rant. Guess what, I am fluent in Korean. I did not want confrontation so I just left it there but it's easy to tell they have ZERO absolutely zero respect towards their customer especially behind their fake smile. I am a tradesman in the area and I shared my story with my coworkers. Not only you lost 1 customer but probably thousands of profit for years to come. But then you probably don't care because you can rant in Korean as if no one else can understand. At least try to make Japanese food right. Sushi rolls were good. Service sucked. I had a salmon avocado roll, yam avocado roll and agedashi tofu. Husband had Alaska roll volcano roll and ebi bites. All tasted good but service was horrible. Was busy but there were 4 servers, I asked for spicy mayo on the side and got teriyaki sauce on top of the roll. At the risk of having my favourite secret spot get over crowded. I have to say, I can't believe Katie F. who thought Maguro wasn't the best in BC. Honestly I've been eating sushi since there was only one place to get it in Japan Town on Powell street. I have sushi it in several countries and eaten some fantastic and terrible meals. Dollar for dollar and pound for pound no place I've been is as consistent for having every dish I order taste totally fresh. Hoshin just doesn't serve stuff that isn't top flight. There are fancier more expensive joints that have wonderful sushi and until a couple of years ago also fancier presentations (Hoshin has joined the ranks for those making fancy rolls), but I believe Hoshin goes and picks each fish he buys and gets them from different distributors unlike most sushi restaurants that literally purchase everything from one distributor whether it's good or mediocre. They put in an order and get whats delivered to them. There is a consortium (read "fish mafia") that controls what almost all the sushi restaurants in North America purchase. I now live on the Island and miss not being able to drop in for lunch, but I try to go every trip I make to the main land. Also if you invent a dish Hoshin will make it for you. Sometimes it will will get added to the menu. Beyond all this I've noticed something lovely about many Korean (yes Hoshin is not Japanese) eateries. They make you feel welcome in the way a good host does when visiting their home. Maguro Sushi is no exception. Frequently Hoshin will hand you a dish you didn't order as a treat or test of a new recipe. I was surprised the first time and thought it was because I was a good customer. While this might be true I have had the same experience in other Korean restaurants and also seen Hoshin offer freebies to others. Also good customers, possibly, or just they way they do business. Walked in at 330pm and there were 3 other tables seated eating, which in Ladner at any sit down restaurant after 2pm is surprising. It was hard to choose what to order as so many rolls sounded good, finally decided on the Woonia, Volcano and caterpillar. They arrived one after another and we're all equally as delicious! I've just come off of a 4 year sushi break (food poisoning from a bad chopped scallop roll) and have been eating my way through the downtown sushi restaurants and this place is probably better than any I've had so far! read more

This place was horrid. Food was barely mediocre. Tempura tasted funky. Seating was hard wood asspain. But here's the thing: literally 3/4 through our barely mediocre meal, a waitress came to our table, interrupted our conversation, and asked us to pay the bill because theye were "closing the computers". I mean literally while we were chewing. The place was supposed to close at 9:30, and this was at about 9:10. The staff were seen leaving asap. Total BS restaurant. Never go there. read more

Been to a number of sushi places all over vancouver, richmond and white rock and this is definately the best I've had so far. Always busy so you need a reservation in evening or expect a wait. Service is ok but bad if its a table of teens (my daughter has gone with us and with friends and said there's definately a difference in service). I have given this place numerous chances. Every time, without fail, my order is wrong. I specify my order on the phone and repeat it multiple times, and they still manage to get it wrong. Recently I paid extra to have something substituted in the roll. What I paid for, I did not get. They said they would credit me the amount that I paid extra for that substitute (not the entire roll even though I could not eat it). When I ordered take out the next time, I reminded them there was credit on my account. I ordered the same thing, repeated my order multiple times on the phone, and once again, they screwed up my order and I can't have it. You would think that when you point out that a mistake was made the last time you were there, that they would be extra careful - this was not the case. The lady on the phone (the same lady that is always there), was short and impolite, and kept trying to hang up as I was trying to specify my order. I won't waste my money anymore, and will give my business to someone who isn't cutting me off over the phone and actually gets my order right.
