Astoria, more specifically the Steinway Street strip is wonderful place for a foodie to stroll up and down -- taking in the sights and smells and the zest for life the locals seem to be regularly filled with. The beef chunks on a stick were so very plump in size and had a wonderfully grilled aroma. Although chewey, the price was fair for the seven hunks of meat. Although I typically prefer beef to chicken, the chicken on a stick was my preference of the two. Tender and well seasoned, these chicken chunks were delectably delicious. Ordering meat on a stick as opposed to ordering a tin or a platter is because I get the full -- no holds barred taste at which point I'll take the plunge into the larger scale meals. Three falafel did not arrive on a stick, as the beautiful outer deep fried crust would certainly not have held togrther. I was super impressed with the falafel (just $1 per 3 pcs) which was fragrant with fresh herbs. The lamb over rice was delicious, but I have to say that I prefer the thinner, basmati-type yellow rice over his style. The portion also wasn't as big as many other halal food trucks. The chicken shawarma sandwich was packed with meat that was a bit dry for my taste, but also loaded with delicious garlicky white sauce and classic hot sauce to pack some heat. This place is very yummy. I'm not sure if there are other carts in other locations, but this is only convenient to get to if you live or work around the area. Because remember, it's a cart, not a sit-in restaurant. First, the prices have rose from what the photos show, so I got the sandwich and it was $7. It included the fries, eggplant, and other stuff inside the sandwich, which I thought was odd. It was nonetheless delicious. The spicy sauce and the white sauce combo is good, but I think some people who are more used to american food may have a kickback from the spice. Otherwise, it is all good and safe. I wish the sauce and the fries would come on the side though. Maybe you can ask for that specifically. The beef was juicy and great, I would get it again. read more

I went just before closing one evening and the owners were more than happy to serve me. I had the chicken and gyro over rice and was sure glad I made this decision. What's special about this cart specifically is that they actually grill the meat in front of you instead of having it pre-made. This is one of the better halal food carts I've been to in the five boroughs. For the sake of comparison, I think the platters of chicken or lamb over rice at this place are tastier than 53rd and 6th (The Halal Guys) in Midtown, Sammy's Halal in Jackson Heights, and the King of Falafel and Shawarma in Astoria. Since I've never tried the falafels at this cart, I'll limit my review to their platters of meat over rice, with 53rd and 6th serving as the main focal point of comparison. At 34th and Steinway, both the lamb and chicken are of good quality and deftly prepared. Unlike 53rd and 6th, the meat is not finely chopped but rather cut into small chunks, which allows the meat to retain a tender interior as it cooks on the grill. One of my biggest complaints about 53rd and 6th is that their chicken can get too dry (which in turn requires that a ton of white sauce be slathered on top to give it moisture) and their lamb is almost always too greasy. Neither of these things are an issue at the cart on 34th and Steinway, where the meats have a nice, clean, savory flavor that is superior to all three of the aforementioned carts in my opinion. The side accompaniments in the chicken and lamb platters are better than their halal counterparts, too. The rice is of a quality, fuller grain (unlike the cheap yellow rice used at 53rd and 6th), the lettuce is generally fresher and crisper (albeit less plentiful), and there are various extras that are not included at 53rd and 6th such as grilled onion slices, tomato slices, eggplant, and french fries. My only gripe is that pita bread is not included with the platter. Both the white sauce and the hot red sauce used at this cart are thinner and lighter than 53rd and 6th, which might be a disappointment to the fans of that cart. While I'd also give the edge in sauces to 53rd and 6th, I think it's nice that the meat and rice at 34th and Steinway are of a high enough quality that the sauces don't have to be poured on in excessive quantities in order for the meal to taste good. Instead, the sauces serve as more of a complement rather than as the star of the show. Overall, this place is well worth a detour for those seeking a quality Middle Eastern halal cart. Note that it closes at 9pm daily, so if you're looking for super late night eats, you'll have to go elsewhere. read more

I wanted to love Mahmoud's Corner, but despite the rave reviews of the food, my experience here was very "meh". Not horrible. Just... there are SO many better options out there, there's no reason to have mediocre food. Falafel Sandwich: C Sadly, I've never had a good falafel sandwich from a truck, and Mahmoud's hit all the low points I've seen with truck falafels: * Dry, dry, dry! The problem is that their tahini sauce isn't tahini sauce: it's tahini *paste*. You're supposed to mix water, garlic, and lemon juice in tahini paste to make a sauce out of crushed sesame. They don't use nearly enough water... it's still a paste, and I couldn't detect any lemon juice. * Bland, bland, bland! The falafels should have a strong taste of cumin and garlic with a delicious "friedness" to them. I tasted no cumin. No garlic. And they were mealy. I'm wondering if these were from a falafel mix. My wife used to make falafels from a mix and I hated it. From scratch is much more work, but is orders of magnitude better. Gyro: B OK. Pretty standard gyro that would be familiar to anyone who buys gyros from a Greek or Halal truck. Lamb and Rice: B- Same as gyro. Your average garden variety lamb with rice dish. The rice was a little underwhelming: somewhat bland. Seasoning like saffron or even just cooking the rice in a chicken broth would've livened up the rice. read more

One of the best halal food carts in Queens, maybe even NYC. Definitely in my personal Top 5. I finally tried it after smelling it from blocks away on my bike for months. The key here, vegetables! Eggplant especially. No one does eggplant but these guys do. Lettuce and tomato are also fresh and crispy. Chicken and lamb are nice cuts of meat with great texture too but the vegetables make that difference. I've even seen some get a nice pepper on top. Their white and hot sauces are also stand out. Theirs stood out to me from the many other carts spread out all over the boroughs. In a sea of gyro carts in the middle of Astoria, how do you know which to choose? I usually go for the one with the lines or simply follow my nose. This gyro cart, located on Steinway and 34th Ave., serves a very unique combination of meat, veggies and French fries in the Astoria version of the gyro platter. My favorite is the chicken gyro platter (they also serve felafel, beef and lamb - delicious as well). It comes perfectly proportioned with either rice or pita bread, fried eggplants (The BEST!), lettuce, tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, and French fries topped with yogurt and hot sauce. All the meat is juicy and savory. I've seen some other customers just order the beef on a stick with some bread. Smells delicious! This is as good as it gets! I'm not much of a carnivore but the combination platter of Lamb and Chicken was hands down one of the best I've ever had. The lamb and chicken platter came with rice, fries, egg plant along with flat bread and topped with their signature white sauce. Each ingredient had it's own unique flavor but when mixed - that's when the real magic happens :) The personnel working there was friendly and the service quick. But again, there wasn't much wait when we got there. I believe it was around $8 and for the cost the portion was more than enough for 2 meals. I tried this place on a whim and I'm sure glad I did. I got the falafel rice platter. It comes with brown or yellow rice, falafel obviously, fried eggplant, a few fries, lettuce, a tomato. You can also get with hot and/or white (tzatziki?) sauce. It was soo good despite my not being able to eat it until about 3 hours after I purchased it! Very flavorful and while a combination I wouldn't initially put together, so delicious. I asked for it with a pita, which was actually incorporated into the platter, versus on the side as I was expecting. I wasn't a fan of it that way and will ask for my pita on the side next time. My total came to $7.5 and I think it was well worth it. My food was fresh and made quickly. My only complaint about the food is that the eggplant was a little mushy for me but I think that's more a personal issue than a food quality issue. This was my first time here and the guy taking orders was a little intense but nice. He made me somewhat reminiscent of the seinfeld soup nazi episode.
