I've heard about Mai Phung for a while on social media. I came with my mother for lunch on a Monday. We waited probably around 15 minutes and there were about two or three other parties before us. Be sure to sign in on the notepad. There are a few plastic stools in the front. While you're waiting, they will take your order to add it to the queue for the kitchen. When our turn was up, we were seated at small table for two. I noticed another gentleman by himself at a table for four people. Hmmmm. Anyhow, there were about five tables total inside or maybe six. It was very warm inside since there is no AC. This is a type of life where you eat and leave as quickly because it's a no-frills no ambience type of place. That's fine with me except it was pretty hot. They charge you a dollar for a little tiny paper cup of water. I ordered the number one since this is their specialty or what they're known for. My mom had the bun thit nuong cha gio. My noodle soup had a good amount of crab pieces and shrimp. It seemed like there was not a lot of noodles though. I thought the broth was a little bland. I guess I'm just not a big fan of this type of soup. If there is a next time, I'll try the bun rieu. My mother was not that crazy about her dish. She said she didn't really like the egg rolls that much. For the price, the wait and the taste of the food, I likely will not be returning when there are so many other places in the area. I try to support various mom and pop restaurants, but for the previous stated reasons, I don't think we'll be back.

I've been coming here for over three years, and it's easily one of the top three spots for bánh canh tôm cua in Orange County. I recommend arriving early, since the line gets long around lunchtime. They take your order while you wait though, so your food comes out quickly once you're seated. I'm also a huge fan of adding extra lemon to my Viet noodle soups, so I love that each table has plenty of pre-cut slices for self-service. This place really knows what it's doing.

Ate again at this tiny restaurant with my Vietnamese speaking friend. She ordered for me "bun thit Nuong cha go". It was for me an absolutely flavorful and satisfying broth noodle soup with pork & shrimp. Make sure to arrive early to get a seat at this restaurant with only a few tables or plan on ordering take out.

Had a group of 10 and waited about 30 minutes or so. It's a super small place. They will also take your order while you're in line so you can get it a few minutes after you sit down. Broth of the banh Canh cua was real flavorful with the crab and thick broth consistency. I'd def go back. Must also get the egg rolls. Be aware of the hot sauce. It's super spicy

been wanting to try different banh canh places around oc and this place didn't disappoint! the broth was extremely rich and thick which i love, but it wasn't wowing. i've had better, but this is one of my top choices for banh canh! there was a bit of a wait, so i was expecting a lot more. service was okay, took our order as we waited and we got our food like 10 min after sitting down. it's a tiny shop with not much seating, so i can't imagine when it gets super busy.

Just warning you, you will wait. It's a small restaurant with about 7 tables. Is it the worth the wait? Most definitely. This restaurant is known for its banh can com của. The broth is perfectly thick. And there is so much crab! I was surprised to see mushrooms (I love mushrooms!). There is a homemade chili that will set your mouth on fire so be warned. But it's delicious. Service is quick and friendly.

Very limited seating and quite busy on weekends of course, but worth the wait. We arrived around 1pm and got seated by 1:50pm for a table of 2. There's a yellow notepad near the entrance on the window sill which is where you can write your name and party number down if staff is too busy serving tables. They go down the list and take your order prior to getting seated, menu is taped to the window to view. 1. Banh Canh Tom Cau Thit -thick silky rich broth perfect for cold weather with silky noodles, wished it was slightly more chewier. Shrimp was fresh with a crisp snap. Crab was fresh and flavorful but there were a few crab cartilage here and there but not too many, just spit them out. Pork was thinly sliced and tender. I'm from San Gabriel Valley and there aren't many restaurants that serve Banh Canh. I personally think it's worth the drive out here. 15. Phan Cha Gio (eggrolls)- so crispy! It's the rice paper type of eggroll, paired well with my hot bowl of Banh Canh. Pork filling was juicy and tender.

A small restaurant with limited seating but is usually busy, as they are only open a few hours of the day. There was a notepad outside to add your party's info onto and a few short, plastic seats available for use. A few minutes before being seated, the host would take your order. So after being seated, you'll just wait a bit longer for the food to arrive to the table. I had the banh canh cua tom thit and the noodles and broth consistency were nice. The noodles were soft and bouncy, while the broth had just the right amount of thickness for my liking. The toppings were plentiful and the bowl itself was filling. The banh canh is what they're known for but honestly, I was overhyped for it. Don't get me wrong, it was ok but I was expecting much better. Would I crave it again? No. Would I wait as long for it? Probably not. But it's probably good to have when you do crave banh canh since there's not too many other places in the area that serves it well. My group also had the bun thit bo xao and mi kho tom cua thit. The bun thit bo xao was said to be not as appetizing compared to the mi kho. The mi kho was said to be flavorful and enjoyable, and it also came with a small side of broth. Prices on the menu is a flat charge. So, if it was $17, your total is $17. Also, heads up! There's no A/C in there and the door stays open. So be prepared to be hot while eating, unless it's cool outside.

By far my favorite banh canh spots, my boyfriend and i love coming here for their banh cảnh and recently we just discovered they offer chinese donuts. The wait can be pretty long on the weekends if you're coming in right when they open. Be mindful that there's only like 6 tables inside.

Mai Phung is highly recommended on Yelp for its Banh Canh noodle soup, so I had to give it a try. I ordered the Banh Canh Tom Cua ($17), and it was flavorful and hit all the right notes. The noodles were soft and thick, served with just enough shrimp and crab meat. The broth is on the thicker side, but the lime wedges on the table help balance it out nicely. I also tried the Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio ($17). It was solid, but it didn't stand out compared to similar dishes at other Vietnamese spots. Service was quick and friendly. The restaurant is quite small, so expect a wait during peak times. My only complaint is the price, at $17 per bowl, it feels a bit steep. Still, I would come back for the Banh Canh when the craving hits.

Modest little place with some cheap tables and chairs. And the customer service...it's a true Asian restaurant. The food though...out of this world. The only place I have had "better" Banh Canh Cua was My Canh in San Francisco. Definitely a "hole in the wall". And worth it for authentic Banh Canh Cua in Orange County.

Authentic viet food. I have tried mostly all the noodle dishes here and they're all so freaking delicious that I can't choose between what to eat sometimes. My top favorites would be pho, bun mam, and banh canh. All are very flavorful and homemade tasting. Add in those crushed chili peppers sitting at your table and you'll have a party in your mouth. Fried rice is pretty good too. Comes out crispy and they use garlic in it too I believe. Must try! read more

I like the food here but these people have no understanding of how to run an efficient business. They're suppose to open at 11am but instead delay their opening until 1120 because they're working on "to go" orders. And when they open, they're focus is on catering to the people picking up food. I have an idea....why don't you focus on the people that's been waiting patiently to get in and service the immediate customers. Your fucking way too greedy for a store your size and you have no sense of business to ever grow. You'll stay in that rat hole forever because you know nothing about customers. read more

I love the pho bo (beef pho) and banh canh tom cua (shrimp crab with clear udon noodle soup) here. Their banh canh tom cua soup is as good as my moms, and I haven't found another restaurant that has made it better then this place. Some places use soup bases to make their pho, but you can tell this place makes their soups from scratch. I always add their fresh chili sauce to the soup for an extra kick. They do have odd hours of operations, but this place is worth the visit if your looking for homemade authentic Vietnamese soups. read more

Their banh canh here is the best. Mai Phung is known for it. It's always crowded here. They have so much business here that they only need to open til 7pm. Mai phungs spicy chili paste is one of a kind and it definitely complements their banh canh. The small egg rolls that come with bun thit nuong is really good also because it's so crunchy and packed with flavor! read more

I came here to eat with my friend for the first time. We couldn't decide on getting bun cha ha noi, bun thit, or banh canh tom cua... We both ended up ordering bun cha ha noi (we had two orders of it brought out to us). We were expecting enough to feed two people, but when they brought the meals out to our table, they brought out a plate of the bun portions of the meals combined and it was only enough for one person. I'd say they actually brought out 1 & 1/3 of a meal for the price of 2 meals (each meal $9). So, we paid $18 total and weren't full after dining... And the meal itself wasn't that flavorful. The pork paste tasted burnt and the other pieces of meat were hard. We won't be returning. read more

I bought 2 canh bun, 2 bun mam, 1 Banh can cua, 1 bun rieu Togo. The reason I bought so much without trying out the restaurant is because of the wait. Thinking that it must be good and because it's more expensive than other restaurant. All of the dish above is not edible. It taste nasty. If I can give zero I would. read more

i heard this is the best banh canh in town. Idk about the quality of the banh canh since I can never get one when I come. The reply would be: "There is no more banh canh." even though I can see some customer walk in after me and they receive 4 or 5 order of banh canh. Wth is that? Bun rieu here is not good. There is hardly any or no crab meat in the bow. There is also no rau muon, which destroy the uniqueness of bun rieu. Should not come here for bun rieu. Banh canh here is not as delicious as other place like Banh Canh Que Em Que Anh. I would recommend other place to go for banh canh. Price is over rated for their food quality. Totally over price. read more

This hole in the wall is a gem! The banh cang Tom cua is delicious and best I have had compared to Brodard, Huong Giang and Lien Hue. I haven't tried anything else, but I am ok with just coming for the banh canh tom cua!!! Hours are odd....opened Monday thru Sunday but closed on Fridays. Hours are from 12pm-8pm. The family is 7th Day Adventist... So their sabbath are on Fridays. read more

Not worth the $9 or wait. I had the banh can and it was gooey. It left me still hungry too. My GF tried the number 2 with catfish and eggplant. It tasted like tamarind soup, but we cant make it better at home. read more

How did I live in Westminster for over 3 years and not know about this place??? Their Banh Canh Cua is effing addictive! It's liquid crack. And with real dungeness crab meat. Nice family owned business, great customer service. The wife and I go to this place at least once a week. Usually a waiting list but worth the wait. read more

Very small restaurant but the quality of the foods will satisfy your hunger! The wait is still long however they did improve on the service. It's a smart idea to take order ahead while guests are waiting, that way when they're seated foods will come out right away. My favorite are seafood udon (bánh canh tôm cua) and the dry special noodles (h tiu khô Mai Phng). Been wanting to try other dishes but always end up ordering the same. Took my out of town friends there to try the udon last weekend and they love it! read more

Small place so you might have to wait a bit but the people move in and out quickly. We tried the crab soup with 2 different noodles. The flavor was nice but there was not anything in particular that made me think it was special and that I needed to have it again. Yo I don't even know where to start. Visited OC and came here for some banh canh and damn this place is so good. The banh canh is so tasty. We been here three times in a week hahah because I had to try everything else on the menu. Let me say banh canh 5/5 and the crab egg rolls 5/5 I also got to try the pho 5/5 it tasted like homemade which makes it even better :). The servers were cool and never gave us a hard time when we ask for extra stuff. The guy that takes orders and seat us is cool. My first experience wasn't that good. I guess I came in at the wrong time because the wait was 40mins to be seated, another 10mins for our water to arrived, another 10mins for food. Not only that their water was served through a foam cup, which I found dirty stuff inside; seems like they reuse the foam cups. Of course I then asked for another new water. Anyways, beside the wait and dirty water, their banh canh (crab udon) is the best I've ever tasted! They used real crabs and their soup is very thick and flavored. A bowl of udon and egg rolls is a perfect combo. read more

I am a banh canh fanatic; and the banh canh tom cua here is only okay. it's not bad, but definitely not great. the restaurant opens at 11:30 am, i came 11:45 and the place was completely packed. waited outside for 30 minutes til i was seated. NOT worth the wait mang! i was expecting something *amazing*, and was disappointed. read more

. Owner don't let employees let customers know what going on outside when ist said door open at 10:30 am . Yet 10:50 still closed but employees inside don't care or try to let poeple know why they can't open in times . Some just walk away for Pho next door.. Definitely not recommend for people who are on timely schedule . Only banh canh is on everything else nah and expensive comepared to other restaurants . read more

This place could easily make 5 stars if they weren't so expensive. It's not a lot more, maybe a dollar or 2. But when you're out with the family, 4 people times 2 dollars becomes 8 dollars. Anyways, probably the best banh canh tom cua in the world, if that's what you're into. read more

I've so far tried their pho, hu tieu, and banh canh, and they're all my #1 choice for each. Their broth is incredibly rich and flavorful, and if you can handle spicy, their chili paste kicks it up a notch. Be aware that they often run out of food towards closing time and may close before the actual closing time. read more

Overpriced noodles. I tried the banh canh and the noodles were all broken into 2" pieces. From experience, this happens when old noodles are reheated. There weren't much meat in the bowl. I also tried the bun rieu and all I can taste was fermented crab. For $9 per bowl, that's way too overpriced! I won't be coming back. read more

When I ate their bun rieu it doesn't taste as good as it used to and they don't even have rau muong. I was expecting rau muong because I usually eat bun rieu with it and to be honest my mom even cook better than what they make. Overall it completely dissatisfied me and I wouldn't want to eat their bun rieu again read more

My 2nd home! I'm obsessed with the Pho and Banh Canh Cua there! The rest is great but again, Pho and Banh Canh Cua! 1) Pho: tastes like home-made pho without ma's yelling: "why are you messing up my kitchen again?" They use fat noodles, fillet mignon, plenty of hot delicious soup. Only rare beef available, I don't remember they have other intestine of that good stuff. The smell is exceptionally delightful. I cook pho but have no idea what secret ingredient/ herb they use that make it smell like that. 2) Banh Canh Cua: so far the best Banh Canh place in Bolsa. Real fresh crab meat (not the canned ones, I witnessed them throwing out fresh crab shell), thick-soup base tastes heavenly (they use only chicken bones to cook with), shrimp and pork meat. Their chopped fresh chili is super spicy and the aroma is savory. I recommend only using a little first and go from there. The restaurant opens late and close fairly early (12-8pm) so have plenty of sleep before you come! The line is extra long sometimes =( read more

Came in and ordered Bun Rieu for take out for my mother since she likes their Bun Rieu, but on my way home, I noticed the container with the broth very cold. I took it back for them to make the broth hot and ready to eat, just like any other Vietnamese restaurants whenever I order Pho or Hu Tieu Mi. The reason why I'm giving this place 1 star is because the gal rolled her eyes at me when I asked her to make the broth hot and ready to eat, as if I'm intentionally making her do extra work. When I was speaking to her in Vietnamese, she then went on to speak English to me and told me with an attitude to let the staff know if I wanted the broth hot and ready to eat the next time I order for take out. If the owner is reading this, I just want to let you know that it will be my last time getting food at your place. As a Vietnamese-American, in my late 30s, who is fluent in Vietnamese, I find it disrespectful that your employee speaks back to me in English with an attitude when I'm simply asking for the broth to be hot and ready to eat. Your place has gone downhill not only in food quality, but also in service as well. I go and buy take out from your place every other week whenever my mom feels like Bun Rieu, but it looks like I gotta find another place that will treat their customers with respect. read more

If we show you where we come from versus where we at right now. You would not believe how many changes we have been through. People have great expectation about people like my family. The way we live, the way we make our food and the service that we provided. Where we came from, there ain't much choice for us to make it happens in certain ways. We have to fight against many big restaurants and competiton outthere through out many years. In other to have the name Mai Phung to stay on Newland Street to serve it's customer. Our story is not that great, though. We came from a corrupted country,Vietnam, then moved to the States on the late 2005s. Back then, we used to lived in a small condo located right in the center of Saigon. Hell of a place, it is the busiest city that will never sleep. Came visit to the restaurant last week, and ordered my favorite Grilled Escargot with Garlic Butter and Peppercorn, Grilled Scallops with Cheese, and my all-time favorite Chilean Sea Bass hot pot! The grilled escargots are a must-have when visiting this place! These are perfectly grilled with rich garlic butter for sweetness, and with a slight kick of spiciness from the peppercorn. Don't forget to also dip the escargot meat with black pepper and a few squeeze of fresh lime juice! If you like melted cheese, then the grilled scallops with cheese would be the perfect match. Each scallop is covered melted cheese and comes sizzling on a hot plate when ordered! Last but certainly not least, my favorite dish of this restaurant is the Chilean Sea Bass hot pot. The order comes with your own tabletop gas stove, along with a hot pot filled with a tom yum like sour soup base. For ingredients, it also includes a plate with slices of pineapple, quarter cut fresh tomato slices, fresh bean sprouts, rice noodles, and a full plate of large pieces of Chilean Sea Bass. Just put all the ingredients in the hot pot and let it cook for 5-10mins on high, I promise you it is one of the best soups you will ever have! Service is good as always. This place always seems to be busy, so you may have to be on the waitlist during certain business hours (eg holidays, prime dinner time, etc). Parking wise, the restaurant is located in a busy plaza, and so you may have to drive around a few times before finding an open spot. However as I said earlier, it's worth the wait. They open early, making it a perfect breakfast spot for an early bowl of pho. The pho broth is exactly what I want when I'm craving comfort food--clean, flavorful, and incredibly soothing. However, the star of the meal for me was the chả giò. Wow. Although they arrived after our pho, they came out at the perfect temperature. I was hesitant to take a bite right away because freshly fried food usually burns my mouth, but these were just right. Crispy, airy, savory, and absolutely delicious. Paired with their fish sauce, it was perfection. I enjoyed the egg rolls so much that next time I'm definitely ordering the egg roll vermicelli bowl. Service was friendly and prompt despite how busy it was, and it's clear the staff works hard to keep things moving. One thing I love is seeing all of the awards and accolades displayed on the walls. If restaurants were to be rated solely on the whims of their owners, Mai Phung would surely be a standout for its erratic and unpredictable business hours. However, dining at Mai Phung is an experience, to put it mildly. From the onset, my visit to Mai Phung was marred by inconsistency. The operating hours seemed to hinge solely on the capricious temperament of the owner. As customers, we were expected to adjust our plans to accommodate his random mood swings, which does not bode well for those seeking a reliable dining spot. I would like to highlight that the pricing at Mai Phung is not just misguided but borders on outright deception. The menu, like a siren song, seductively offers everything for $10. However, this illusion of affordability shatters at the end of your meal. The restaurant operates on an undisclosed 'updated' pricing model, causing an unexpected surge in your bill. A case in point would be my order of the banh canh, a dish praised by many. After enduring a grueling wait of over 30 minutes, the soup failed to make a significant impression on my taste buds. What did make a lasting impact was the shock of the bill. Instead of the anticipated $10, each dish cost us a hefty $15. Adding insult to injury, we were charged $1 for tap water, a fee so ludicrous that it still manages to surprise me. Addressing this discrepancy with the host elicited a nonchalant shrug and the justification that "we didn't update the price on the menu". This dismissive attitude coupled with such dubious pricing practices is, in my opinion, an unacceptable way to conduct business. The service at Mai Phung was lackluster at best, hardly justifying the unexpected surge in prices. It's a disappointing state of affairs when your water ends up costing more than your tip. In conclusion, my experience at Mai Phung was a bitter one, steeped in regret and peppered with disappointment. I went in expecting a humble, hole-in-the-wall eatery serving hearty Vietnamese fare, only to be met with an overpriced, underwhelming meal, served in a setting that could best be described as wanting. The aftermath of my visit to Mai Phung left me with a bitter taste, a lighter wallet, and a strong resolve to never return. One thing to keep in mind is that it gets very busy, especially since they close early. I'd definitely recommend planning accordingly because the wait can be pretty long during peak hours.
