I called in an order around lunch time for pickup, and unfortunately the customer service was not good at all. From the moment I walked in, the girl at the front did not seem friendly or welcoming. I honestly felt uncomfortable even asking for condiments because of the attitude, but I finally did and she still seemed irritated while helping me. I ordered the chicken katsu curry mini and it was a very good amount of food for being "mini". I wish it came with a bit more curry, but I'm not mad since it is a chicken dish. Quick place to eat in small plaza of restaurants. Maika'i gives you a LOT of food. Me and my boyfriend both agreed it was a lot of food for what it cost and we both took leftovers home. The katsu chicken was a breaded and fried chicken, they slice it. It was my favorite of the two I got. I also got bbq chicken. The teriyaki sauce is good too. They offer canned Hawaiian juices. First time here and I think we found our Hawaiian food spot! My husband ordered BBQ chicken meal and I got the BBQ beef mini meal. We both enjoyed it! My hubby tried mines and he agreed with me that it was tender. (He's super picky about beef because some places don't make it right -chewy or hard) Maikai did it right! Macaroni salad was delicious too! The flavor was just right! I do wish it did come with a bigger portion of rice, but they gave a lot of protein and I'll take more protein any day! The price is very good too! The place was clean, even the restroom. Plenty of parking. Service was great! We had some leftover and the cashier noticed that we did and asked if we needed a bag. Coming in not knowing what it entails, the menu on the top does not really give a good explanation of what you're actually getting, so I was bug eyed confused as to what I should order. Prices went up from what I could tell based on previous photos on Yelp; so the old menu is inaccurate. SO I will tell you... since I actually forgot to take a photo of the menu. The Chicken Katsu with curry is a chicken filet with green curry all on the top. It comes in a to-go container with white rice and a macaroni salad. It does not come with any other sauce. The portion is enormous, so the price for it is fair. Out of personal preference I don't love when sauce comes directly on a deep fried something because it get soggy.. so if you plan to eat it later I would request the curry on the side. Oh! It was delicious by the way. I would definitely order the exact same thing again. Visiting Hawaii in recent years, I've definitely tried some true, authentic cuisines and while Maika'i isn't exactly up to par over in the pacific, its really damn close to it. We got the H3 BBQ beef and chicken and its always a great treat to the eyes when your entire foam box is filled with food. Other reviewers say its "fatty" or "tough" but every time I get the H3, its always consistent and correctly cooked. I also get the spam masubi's which are perfect for a smaller meal, or some snack in between. There are also other well priced meals that I always want to try out, will have to come back for them. The ambiance is a simple faculty that mimics the casual in and outs of the Hawaiian culture. There are also drinks in the near cooler that are from the homeland. I busted out the trusty Yelp app and found Maika'i Hawaiian BBQ. I love Hawaiian BBQ so much and I have it rarely so this was a no-brainer. I ordered takeout on a Monday. I went with the combo platter which comes with spare ribs, beef, chicken, rice, and macaroni salad. There's a similar version with chicken katsu instead of spare ribs. The interior has some definite Hawaiian vibes with some beach artwork. It's a casual spot but has some charm. I asked about one of their Hawaiian soft drinks and the guy working was nice enough to give it to me for free. Super nice gesture! Now to the good stuff. The food is so good my stomach is growling just thinking about it. Hawaiian BBQ is sweet as you get some awesome dipping sauces for the meat. I had two different types. Macaroni salad and rice are standard solid side dishes in Hawaii. What's great about this meal is that you get a heaping supply of food (enough for two full meals) for around $10. I recently moved from Hawai'i to Houston. While Texas bbq and Tex mex are very yummy delicacies, I'm still an island girl at heart who misses my plate lunches and most importantly...RICE! Katy Asiatown seems relatively new and all the other establishments in the plaza are all indicators of a warm feeling of being home to me since I've moved. I have all sorts of Asian foods to choose from and then I have this Hawaiian joint in the mix. I drove happily to the spot and when I entered the venue, the vibes were definitely laid back and color toned to match an L&L from Hawai'i. There weren't any people when I went but my server was nice and attentive. He took my order and I waited a good while for my food. I ordered the Mixed plate of kalbi beef, grilled chicken and chicken katsu. I also got two musubis because again, it's been a while since I've had rice! When I went home to eat the food, I was shocked at how much it did taste like home. The rice was short grain and the spam was marinated and fried to perfection. The katsu was so crunchy and it paired well with the teriyaki sauce it came with. The mac salad was so flavorful and 'ono! Don't even get me started. I flipping love Maikai so much. Like I would almost go as far as saying it's my favorite restaurant in Katy. The owners are super nice as well as the other staff. Inside is always clean and well kept. Anything you order is literally delish. They use to have deals on Tuesday which made it easier to eat there a lot more but they have since removed this deal. Prices are a liiiiiiitle steep but worth it if you can! Any of the rice plates with chicken is BOMB. Even the sides are homemade and I love that so much. The boiled cabbage side wasn't very good. The Mac salad was a little heavy on the mayo or heavy cream and was also pretty meh. I had the H2 and it's a very generous portion of food. The meats were all great, but the beef is my favorite. Wife got the B2 ribs and they were really good as well.
