Edamame
Chun M.

Boy, we hadn't been to Maile's in 15 years! It is at the east end of Oahu in a Hawaii Kai strip mall and we find ourselves here again. That previous time, we had stopped in for lunch and they had some really good lunch specials. I remember the Thai Loco Moco had really good flavor with ground pork (instead of beef) topped with a fried egg over rice. This time for dinner, the 3 of us over ordered because we came in time for happy hour, so got a few extra appetizers. The fried calamari was extra crispy with a thai chili dipping sauce. I was really surprised by the edamame. It's not just plain salted like at Japanese restaurants. This Thai style has a heavy garlic oyster sauce that was really tasty. The sauce would be great on the jasmine rice! The green papaya salad was refreshing but the spicy was a little much, even though I asked for medium heat. For entrees, our eyes again were bigger than our stomachs because the portions are generous. The Chicken Massaman Curry was not too spicy and I love drenching the sauce over jasmine rice. We also had the Thai Fried Rice with Shrimp and the Spicy Seafood Combo. The fried rice was great and the seafood combo did start very spicy but the heat built up to a good burn.

Having Thai lunch in Hawaii Kai. Was recommended to try this Thai restaurant by Costco. Walking in we where greeted right away and fitted. Ambiance is classy but yet comfortable because we where dressed in shorts. Ordered the red curry with sticky rice, spring rolls and the soy cheese fun. Red curry: Tasty and mild with coconut milk. Spring rolls: Came hot with roman lettuce, cucumber, mint and sauce. Crunchy and tasty. Just enough filling. Chow fun soy: Nice flavorful with broccoli. Pros: Alot of food and tasty. Cons: Kinda pricey. For just the two of us. Three dishes and two Thai coffees. Can out about $100 include tip. Would I go back? Maybe.

Pork Larb
Ken P.

We've been regular takeout customers at Maile's Thai Bistro and have always loved their food -- consistently flavorful and well-prepared. Unfortunately, our most recent order was completely different from what we've come to expect. We ordered the Thai lechon and the pork larb, both of which are normally excellent. This time, though, the lechon, the few pieces in the dish seemed breaded, with an oily, soft texture and almost no meat inside -- mostly fat -- and it lacked the usual sauce and flavor balance that make the dish so good. The pork larb, while looking similar, was extremely salty, watery, and missing its usual brightness and spice. It honestly tasted like a completely different recipe or chef. We're not asking for a refund -- just wanted to share this feedback in case something changed in the kitchen or preparation process. We really hope this was just an off day, because Maile's has always been one of our favorites, and we'd love to see it return to the quality we've known and enjoyed.

I got there probably around the last time I was able to be seated, but the staff were very friendly. The order did seem to take a little bit longer than I would've expected, but they were still pretty busy considering it was like an hour before closing. The Thai tea was nice and fresh + not overly sweet, the salad was so delicious, the drunken noodles were flavorful, and the sticky rice was soooo good. Would recommend and go back if I visit again.

I could see the servers were busy. The food came out in a reasonable time, and the appetizer sampler was great. I usually don't really like regular egg rolls but they were so tasty. Chicken wings are also my favorite. Calamari and summer rolls were okay. The entrees....pat thai and panag curry were good but nothing special. What was really dissappointing was we found a long piece of hair when we took the left over curry home in the container. I know these things happen but wish I noticed that at the restaurant ( I barely ate the curry at the restaurant as I got full so quickly). Paid $25 for it....rarely ate it and found a hair.... Also they charge 4% credit card fee and put the default tip from 20%, 25% and 30%. All these upcharge and tip culture is getting out of control.

Interior: only good for groups of 4s as they only have tables for that size and it's all in one column so the tables are not next to each other. Wait Time: None to be seated. Came on weekday night. SO GLAD THEY OPEN LATE! Food took about 10-15min to arrive. Items Order: 10/10 Pork Thai Boat $17 - I got egg noodles because they ran out of wide noodles but still delicious! Noodles were cooked fine, broth came out piping hot. Not that spicy but so rich in authentic flavor! Added their spice in the side and it was amazing! Generous portions of crispy pork (they pan fry it before), some meatballs, and fish balls. 9/10 Pork Pad Thai $17 - Same amazing crispy juicy pork. Noodles were incorrect/not typical. They use pho or the thin rice noodles for their pad thai. Despite that, the noodle texture was still good: chewy bouncy noodles that soaked up the sauce very well. Flavor was authentic perfect sweet savory and sour combo!

This, however, will probably be my first and last visit. The place is cute enough, with a large back garden area where I chose to dine. Service was also great. I appreciate the little button at the table that I could click for service. The food, however, was mediocre at best. My friend and I ordered the pad Thai with tofu, ginger chicken, chicken satay, and pork larb. The pad Thai was the best dish, but it was very tomatoey, which I did not expect. The chicken with ginger had very little chicken. It was mostly julienned vegetables, including celery which I do not care for. The chicken satay was kinda dry and most certainly needed the peanut sauce to make it palatable. The larb was very dry with very bland flavor, served on one lettuce leaf and a wedge of cabbage. How am I supposed to eat that? All of it was quite disappointing, especially for the price point. As I was eating this meal I remembered the Thai food truck at the end of Ward, where Fisherman's Pier used to be. Now THAT was some good Thai food. I guess that was the best thing about this meal-remembering where I could get really good Thai food-so that the next time I'm having a craving, I can go back over there...I hope it's still there.

We warmed up a little with the medium spice level papaya salad...and they don't mess around with their spices here. Thai spice is way more of an intense, painful heat than Korean chili peppers (in my opinion!). The relaxed setting with iconic Buddas, Elephant and Thai art is simple, inviting and warm. Our host and server was Taylor who was extremely friendly, gracious and great Irish smile! We ordered the classics (I inserted our selections in the photos given my severe dyslexia) Each dish was equally fresh, eye appealing and delicious! From the "Best Pad Thai I have ever had" comment from my discerning wife who judges a Thai restaurant's cusine by its Pad Thai is saying alot! Wow! Very impressive offering we haven't been able to get even in the "Best" Thai restaurants in San Francisco. Our son managed to make sure there were absolutely NO leftovers on the plates before he ordered the Manago sticky rice. It was perfect closure to an extraordinary meal. Bravo to the chef for making it happen. I talking with Taylor we learned the owner is her uncle Dr. Stephen Foley, MD an OBY/GYN and University of Hawai'i alum as Keck School of Medicine. As a former hospital CEO on the mainland I can appreciate this extremely difficult work. It's on the smaller side, but the tables are spaced comfortably enough that you don't feel cramped. The menu is also extensive, with just about every popular Thai dish you could think of. Service was one of the highlights. The staff was attentive, friendly, and quick throughout the meal. Our Thai tea arrived almost immediately. I'm talking within a minute of ordering. It's definitely on the stronger side with less milk than most Thai teas, allowing the tea flavor to really shine through. It leans a bit sweeter than average, but the sweetness was balanced, and you could genuinely taste the freshly steeped tea leaves. The Thai boat noodles are what this restaurant is known for, so they were a must-order. Since it was my first time trying boat noodles, I figured this was the best place to experience them. I can definitely see why they're a customer favorite and would recommend ordering them if it's your first visit. The beef pad see ew surprised me. It was sweeter than most versions I've had, but it really worked. The noodles were cooked perfectly with great texture. My only complaint was the beef. It was a bit chewy and didn't match the quality of the noodles. The seafood tom yum was the biggest letdown. The broth itself was flavorful, but the seafood selection felt like a frozen mix rather than fresh ingredients. The mussels were already removed from their shells, the squid was chewy, and the soup included canned mushrooms instead of fresh ones, along with fish cakes and fish balls. It lacked the freshness I was hoping for. Overall, I left feeling that the proteins were the weakest part of the meal. The flavors, service, and atmosphere were all enjoyable, but the quality of the meat and seafood didn't quite stand out. That said, it's still a solid Thai restaurant, especially considering the options in Hawaii. Would I come back? I'm on the fence, but probably not

We couldn't decide what to eat until my wife finally said, "Let's go get Thai food at that place my sister and I tried about a month ago." I responded with a "K we go." I figured they were probably getting ready to close, but we lucked out, Siam Garden Café is now open until 10:00 p.m. on Sundays! Awwwwwriiite...!. Since it was later in the evening, there were only a few tables filled, so we were seated right away and had plenty of time to check out the menu. My wife already knew exactly what she wanted--the Thai Beef Salad. I had my eye on the Thai Fried Chicken, and we added an order of Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodles). We requested it mild spicy--and definitely not Thai spicy, because we know better! There were a couple other things we wanted to try but we didn't want to overdo it with just the two of us. The food came out fast. First the Drunken Noodles, and wow... that was ono. The thick, chewy noodles reminded me a little of a chow/look fun, tossed in a a sauce with tender beef. Every bite was packed with flavor. Next came the Thai Beef Salad and the Thai Fried Chicken. The salad had that classic tangy dressing with vinegar and fish sauce that paired perfectly with the beef. If I had one small kine suggestion, it would be to add just a little more beef, but the flavors were on point. The fried chicken was cooked to crispy perfection--lightly seasoned so you could actually taste the chicken. Dipped into the Thai sweet chili sauce, you know the one, it was the perfect combination of crunchy, savory, and sweet. Even though we were pretty full, there was no way we were not going to order dessert. We shared the Mango Sticky Rice, which was the perfect sweet and tart ending to a great meal. Last but not least, one Thai iced coffee to go. Yeah it's late but wanted to stay up and binge watch a couple of episodes of a K-drama, don't judge. Overall, Siam Garden Café delivered. Great food, friendly service, quick turnaround, and now with later Sunday hours, it's an even better option when those late-night Thai cravings hit. We'll definitely be back to work our way through the rest of the menu.
