Out here in Hawaii Kai, there is very little choice when it comes to Thai food. When Maile's arrived a couple of years ago we were so excited. For some reason we haven't been back in a while and finally returned since I bought a Groupon special. I think that one of the reasons we haven't been back is because we have always had a hard time getting a table. So this time we knew we would be in luck as we decided to go for lunch. I am so glad we did!!! We had a delicious lunch and I'm still glowing over my lunch. Service was great, the food came out quickly, our water was filled and the dishes cleared promptly. The only reason that I gave it four instead of five stars is that the prices here a little high compared to other Thai restaurants. However, I will admit that the quality of the ingredients and the food is excellent, so I can accept these higher prices. We had a cold tofu dish that was served with Chinese parsley, julienned fresh ginger and served with a fabulous sweet shoyu chili sauce. I really loved this sauce! We all really enjoyed their Thai variation on tofu. We also ordered the tomato mozzarella cheese salad. I was thinking.. "What kind of Thai dish is this?" But I ordered if for my youngest daughter that loves tomatoes. When it arrived it was sooooooo delicious. I was in shock. Basically it was five slices of tomatoes layered with a slice of fresh mozzarella and tons of julienned fresh basil. This is all drizzled lightly with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. But what made this dish over the top awesome was the shoyu chili sauce served with it. This is where the Thai influence came in. Last but not least, we had our usual spring rolls and panang chicken curry which never fails to satisfy us. The spring rolls are larger than when they first opened (great improvement!) and the curry was perfect (as usual) over their sticky rice. I finally got to try this restaurant after passing it so many times just to eat a quick meal across at Panda's. I decided to go for my birthday dinner since I was craving Thai food and not the same 'ol Italian restaurants and Chinese restaurants I go to. I was quite pleased at the atmosphere and the dim lights. ...It makes me look better! haha. We beat the crowd at 7pm! Food- I ordered the calamari appetizer - super ono since the calamari was soft and batter wasn't too oily. The sweet sauce complimented it. For the main family style dishes we ordered eggplant with beef, green curry (recommended by waitress), and pad wu (you can just say 'wu'). I've never tasted anything like wu. A very good surprising dish. Very tasty dish! I was pleased with the green curry that had eggplants (so I didn't have to order the eggplant dish) and side sticky rice. Service- The waiters and busboys were very nice. They always noticed our empty glasses and dishes. Great service and dressed well. Parking- Parking isn't a problem since it's in the Hawaii Kai Shopping Center. We parked in front. What to wear- Either casual or formal. My husband wore t-shirt, shorts, and slippers. I wore a black dress. Kid Friendly- Yes, you may eat with your kids, but of course not at the bar. Interior - White table clothes/napkins, Square and white ceramic dishware, dim lights, and not too noisy. There's also a TV at the bar which everyone can see unless your back is facing it. I hadn't seen my Cousin Buddy in a very long time, or as he likes to put it: "since President Carter was in office!" He came to Hawaii this past week on tour with his band. While showing him our Island, I took him to lunch at Maile's Thai Bistro. The food at Maile's was good. I ordered the Pineapple Curry with Shrimp, and Buddy ordered the Cashew Stir-fry. Since we're family, we ate family style. Both dishes were quite good. I forgot to ask for the curry to be spicy. So it was not as exciting as it would have been had I been with the program. Speaking of "not being with the program," the staff had one amusing failure to get with the program: I ordered Thai Iced Tea from the server. A few minutes later, the manager brought me "my" Thai Iced Coffee. I told him I had order the tea, not the coffee. He apologized and returned to the bar. I few minutes later the server brought me "my" Thai Iced Coffee, again. This time, I just drank it. It was good. And the snafu gave me a good laugh. The prices were reasonable'ish. They would have likely felt high, had I not used the 10% off Yelp check-in offer. It worked fine. It was just a little goofy handing the server my phone with the offer on the screen so he could take it to the back to show his manager. My cousin and I had a fine meal and a great visit. Where do you go when nobody is in the mood for Lobster King or Buca De Beppo? ... Maile's Thai Bistro! Came here for a friend's birthday and was super excited to try their food since my friend loves it here. The restaurant was cute and semi dimmed... classy but had a very comfortable feeling. We had a party of 13 people and they seated us towards the front where it was pretty spacious. We were all pretty hungry since it was around 8PM and we all eat like there's no tomorrow! So many dishes to choose from so we decided to order family style. They gave us a free starter: Crispy Noodles with sweet sauce. It was good and a little more unique than the traditional bread and butter. We ordered: Spring Rolls ~ $9.90 There's a reason why they say you should only order ribs at Tony Roma's or spring rolls at Vietnamese restaurants. The spring rolls weren't anything spectacular. It was a little too small for me. It came with a special sauce (which no one really cared for) rather than the typical fish sauce. Teriyaki Tenderloins ~ 13.90 Best dish we ordered! It was juicy and tasty! So good that we had to order a second plate! Crispy Wonton ~ $8.90 Good combination of minced pork and shrimp seasoned in thai spices. It was good but a little oily. But then again when is crispy wonton not oily? Thai Salad ~ $7.90 Second best dish ordered. The sweet and tangy dressing was super delicious! It definitely spiced up the combination of romaine lettuce with onions, tomatoes, carrots and egg. Masaman Curry ~ $10.90 mmMm... loved how light the peanut curry was. We ordered it with chicken which was a little bland but the curry was tasty. New York Steak ~ 28.90 A little too salty which led to everyone stuffing rice down our throats! The pieces were big and slightly on the drier side. Seafood Mixed Vegetable ~ $15.90 Birthday girl's favorite dish! A combination of scallops, calamari, shrimp, long bean, mushrooms, carrots and corn. It was very refreshing because of the "special house sauce." The owner actually turned out to be one of our friend's friend. He was super nice and gave my friend a birthday shot :) They also gave us complimentary desserts: a slice of Key Lime Cheesecake and a slice of Oreo Cheesecake. I'm not a fan of cheesecake but somehow the Oreo Cheesecake axed me and I woke up in heaven!!! We regret not ordering the Pad Thai but I think it'll be worth the drive back to Hawaii Kai! read more

Maile's ... how do I put this ... it's a place like Cheer's ... where everyone knows your name! And I'm not kidding! Maile and Kip, the owners, are some of the most incredible people you could meet. They welcome you with open arms like they are inviting you into their home. The staff are incredibly friendly and this place definitely has that very "family" atmosphere. The food is amazing! For a small bistro style locale this place fits the bill for being an elegant, refined, quaint, yet casual eatery where no expense is spared to make your dining experience a unique and enjoyable one making you want to come back time and time again. Now to the food ... we started with an appetizer of Salt and Pepper Shrimp. Or should I say prawns! These were some of the biggest shrimp I've ever seen! Perfectly fired on the outside to t golden brown...you can't resist but to eat the entire thing tail and all! I recommend getting the Beef Sashimi dipping sauce for dipping...simply amazing! Next was the beef sashimi. Thin, layered sashimi grade beef over lettuce with a soy dipping sauce. Add in some chili peppers for spice and you'll feel like you're going to heaven. Some of THE best beef sashimi I've ever had. Next up...the Drunken Clams. Apparently clams like to get drunk as well :) Seriously though, picture two handfuls of clams, sauteed over a hot stove until they heat themselves up enough to unveil their intense flavor, dropped into a large white bowl then covered in a bath of creamy broth that accentuates and intensifies the taste of the clams to perfection! Maile's has it and they are that good. I recommend the Spicy Drunken Clams...you will not be let down! Make sure you top it off with a Martini, local beer (Longboard is my fav) or any concoction Kip can come up with. I LOVE this place and I have definitely found a place to call home. read more

We noticed a new sign on the door at Maile's Thai Bistro in Hawaii Kai today. It said that they are now charging 3% to use a credit card and are adding 3% as a kitchen charge! They must have got the idea from another recently opened restaurant in the area. We have always loved, Maile's, but this is too much to stomach. We took our friends out for a nice quick meal after hiking Koko Head. I love Thai food. However, this is not the best place to go. I had the Spicy Seafood Combo. The fish smell was strong. Typically, you'll smell the seasoning or they will kill the smell with a lemon. The Pa Thai was good. The spicy wonton has meat inside. That was a nice treat. However, the wontons are small but very delicious. The prices were reasonable and the service was good. I left unimpressed a bit disappointed. read more

Food is ok, portions are about right, very clean, and service is good. But the biggest minus is that it's over priced by about $5 per dish compared to the gold standard, Siam Garden. Due to the high prices, we decided that the meal for two ($47.99) is the best option. It included a salad, spring rolls, choice of curry, pad thai and cheesecake (they were out and gave carrot cake instead). The salad was not bad, dressing was a bit too sweet. Spring rolls standard. Panang curry was ok, not too thick or watery, right amount of peanut butter and coconut milk, veggies are perfectly cooked. Pad thai was below average, too much oyster or shoyu sauce used, the noodles were a tad undercooked. Carrot cake tasted homemade and not from the Costco next door. This place has gone down hill the last few years. I've been ordering from mailes since they opened. I have been a supporter of them for many years and have been really disappointed in quality, taste and consistency overall. The price of the food is ridiculous for how bland and not well cooked most of the dishes are. Today was my last order with them since time and time again they keep messing up my order. Their spring rolls use to a family favorite- taste like the frozen stuff you can get at a grocery store. The ribs were hard as rock. The yellow curry was bland and they filled it with tofu when I had ordered chicken. Numerous occasions they have messed up my order and a lot of times some dishes were COLD upon coming home (I live right down the street of shopping center). A once beloved restaurant to all of us in Hawaii Kai is now not a favorite among most of us. Would be a good time for Maile to rethink her plans, if you want to keep Hawaii Kai open, maybe give the same TLC to this restaurant like you did before and hopefully it can go back to what it once was. read more

It bridges the gap between a place where at dinner people are in decent attire while during the day board shorts and sandals seem to be more the way. Large menu with accommodating service when requesting specific items and heat intensities. Items ordered in rank: 1) chicken massaman curry (love curries with a coconut milk base. Let's start with the good: the pad thai here is to die for. It was delicious... Flavorful, good texture to the rice noodles, and saucy without being overkill. I will definitely be returning for this, and am eager to try their other noodle dishes. The panang curry, on the other hand, was "meh". Our server didn't check in about spice preference, which resulted in a sad, extremely mild and bland panang. Pretty disappointing. I wish that I'd thought to ask for some heat in it when I ordered, but it's usually something that you'll be asked, and it didn't occur to me until I took a bite that they might just give me the mildest possible option (I usually opt for medium or hot curries). As other reviews have pointed out, the service was definitely a little bit problematic overall. The staff was very nice when they were around, but they need a host, because upon entering the restaurant, everyone stands around for a while waiting to be noticed. Our check took some time because they dropped it off and didn't pick it up for quite a while, and in fact one woman a table over became so impatient with waiting for hers that she shouted "my check, please!" to the nearest staff member. I've heard really great things about Maile's Thai bistro for a long time and hadn't realized that it's in the same little shopping center as the Hawaii Kai Costco. It's actually very conveniently located, and I'm a little upset with myself that I haven't figured out how to get here a year or two or three earlier. I decided I absolutely needed to go after I made plans to try Maile's new venture in ward: Bellini. Sooo after spending the morning at sandy's, my friend and I headed over. I felt a little underdressed, especially because they have table cloths. Eek! But it wasn't that big of a deal and the waitstaff didn't say anything or treat us any differently. I noticed that the menu is quite large, with interesting fusion dishes like mozzarella salad. Seriously, I don't think Thai people know what mozzarella is, but it was cool that they are going for a fusion menu. My friend and I ordered the fried chicken and the green curry. Both were very flavorful and delicious. Btw, even though the green curry is labeled as spicy in the menu, it's not. :) At $14 each, it's a little pricier than other Thai places, but everything was delicious and I will be back to try other menu items. Service was great! After coming from the beach, we were thirsty, and the waiters gratefully kept our water glasses filled. This is definitely a nice place to come for great tasting Thai food. The restaurant itself is very nicely decorated and they have a full bar. Mailes has gone downhill these couple of years. It's the only Thai place in Hawaii Kai so that is what keeps it busy. Unfortunately, their service and quality is poor. After our morning dive, we were famished and decided to grab some thai. I heard great things about Maile's and wanted to check it out for myself. Atmosphere: Right in Hawaii Kai, in an unassuming shopping plaza. The decor inside is much more impressive than the shopping center. I felt like in a luxury thai restaurant. Service: The place wasn't very busy especially for Saturday lunch, which was surprising. The hostess and waiter were very attentive and was always available. Food: Wow! Great thai food. We had the Pad ki mao and pad woon sen both with chicken. We were not disappointed. The flavors were both different and tasty. Perfect serving size also not too much and well balanced dishes. I wish I ordered more, but was very satisfied at the end of the meal. Intangibles: Who knew this place was in Hawaii kai. Huge disappointment, but then again wasn't expecting much from an asian bistro place. The word "bistro" mixed with anything asian just doesn't work. Decor = nice, staff = inattentive. Shaken Beef: horrendous. The menu says filet mignon cuts, on a layer of lettuce and other stuff. I was livid -- I can't remember the last time I had to chew thru my filet mignon, and it was on a bed of thinly sliced won bok cabbage, with a peanut type of sauce (?!?!). Long story short, this is not anything close to shaken beef, regardless of this "bistro" style type of food. (At least make it good, right?) My favorite Shaken Beef = Bac Nam on restaurant on King/Piikoi. It is made properly, on a bed of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, and the perfect sauce. Sorry, didn't mean to name drop but hey.. And if someone can suggest a better one, please do! Jasmine Rice: Okay, who serves white steamed rice in an open face bowl on the table? Maile's Bistro does! I was mortified. The poor rice sat there, getting obliterated by the cold a/c, wishing it was in a nice bamboo rice container. We even questioned if it was really jasmine rice because the fragrance wasn't there (hmm, was it even really filet mignon? *wink wink*) Service was bad. They did seat us right away when we walked in, but after all our food came out (can't even remember the appetizer, it was so boring), we were still waiting around for the rice. I tried to get our server's attention but he was busy chit chatting w/ another server. it was actually the other server who probably read my lips, "Not sure when we'll get our rice. I think our guy is busy on the side talking over there.", so ultimately we somehow got our server's attention. (shame on him though). This ultimately was the bowl of rice I mentioned earlier. *groan* After the bill was paid and we were walking towards the door, we did not get acknowledged. Am I asking for too much to expect a simple "Thank you"? Seeing 3 of the restaurant's girls huddled on the side, I assumed they were doing business or work talk, but upon passing it was gossip or small talk! My wife and I stopped by Maile's Thai Bistro after a nice morning of hiking. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. We ordered two curries and a Pad See Ew, all of which were phenomenal. The portions were fairly generous and all tasted quite good. The 'hot' spice level had a nice amount of heat but wasn't overwhelming. For being in Hawaii, the prices are very reasonable. Would definitely recommend if you are in the area and like Thai food! read more

I eat here often (usually takeout) because my girl adores this place and claims they have the best pad thai on the island. The only thing they are best at is forgetting my utensils every single time I order takeout, without fail. They don't even bother asking if I need utensils. Why should I need to ask for utensils for takeout? My girl usually orders the chicken pad thai, and I usually order some kind of curry. This time, I ordered seafood panang curry with a side of sticky rice. My order ALONE came out to be around $24 for just curry and sticky rice. If you charge me this amount, it better be freaking amazing. On the menu it states that the seafood curry comes with squid, scallops, and shrimp. The definitely skimped on the sticky rice, but whatever, I'm sort of watching my figure anyways. The curry itself was JUST OKAY, some squid, several shrimp (with the tail on...why?), and one small piece of scallop. ONE. Are you serious? My SO's pad thai was dry and the chicken, as always, was overcooked and tough. At least this time, it wasn't burnt (our order weeks ago was), but it is still inconsistent. The order was meh to me, but she said it was decent. Siam Garden Cafe's pad thai is better IMO. When I got home, guess what. Yup, NO utensils. NOT EVEN SURPRISED. Avoid like the plague. I was craving Thai and I was in Hawaii Kai, so I obviously searched through Yelp and came across Malie's. After reviewing the good and no so good reviews, I decided to try them out, since it was something new and all the good reviews seem to say the food was rocking. There was a 10% off coupon, but it was for dine in only. The hostess was nice and after seeing the layout of the restaurant, I was amazed on how decadent it was. There is a full bar with Christmas lights above it. The tables seem immaculate and the prices would be pricier. After looking through the menu for take-out, I realized this to be the case. I would dine in at another time to savor the ambiance, but for now, take-out is good enough. I ordered the yellow curry with beef and the green curry with beef too. Both of them were medium spicy and had that certain kick to them individually. While the prices were kinda up there, the curries were rather tasty when you make your own pasta @ home and do meals that way, instead of ordering sticky rice from the restaurant. This is a solid Thai restaurant for Hawaii Kai. I always ignored it but I'm not sure why. Service was great, no complaints there. Ambiance was nice. Though it's in a shopping center, it's a lovely restaurant. We were in the mood for shrimp so it was shrimp pad thai, shrimp summer rolls (omg good) and some sort of seafood dish (shrimp, scallops, etc.) All were solid choices but I especially loved the summer rolls because they were so light. Sophisticated & affordable yet at the same time casual and delicious! We have seen resturaunts come and go in this space and I hope that Maile's is here to stay. The presentation is beautiful and the ambiance is romantic ( unless everyone is hungry at the same time you are, then it gets kind of loud with people chatter ) dinner reservations are highly suggested, though it is a walk in resturaunt. Portions are perfect for the price you pay, we always end up taking home leftovers. ( which reheat great so far ) The only thing we were not impressed with was the regular chicken wings, which are probably on the menu more for the Bar patrons and people of simple tastes. Dinner for two! We really enjoy Thai so here's our honest review. The Angel chicken did have more meat vs Thai chicken having crispier skin. Delicious!! The dipping sauce was a siracha mayo. I'd prefer sweet chili sauce or none. Great taste it doesn't need it. The pork panang was in red sauce. We prefer yellow sauce but still flavorful. The spring rolls were smaller than normal but it was on happy hour...great deal. The sauce was too sweet for me. I prefer the original fish sauce/vinegar style. Last but not least...the Thai tea was much lighter than I normally get it. A bit too much milk. I like the tea taste. Thank you Kailee for your friendly service. You know your dishes! read more

Delicious yellow curry with plenty of pineapple and peppers. Shrimp vermicelli could have used some better ingredients and presentation. Kind of a waste of money for that dish. I threw the shrimp in the curry! I found it expensive $34 for 2 dishes take out. I do like to support local so will be back but focus more on appetizers. Also no rice was in my bag for the curry.
