My wife and I enjoy Maile's Thai Bistro a lot. We are residents of the Hawaii Kai area and it's awesome to be on the road trying to get home and just order some take out from Maile's. Then by the time, you get to Hawaii Kai, just pick it up and bam! dinner is served. We like their curries a lot. Especially the red one, because it goes great with beef. The Thai Loco Moco sounds like a bad idea but it is their best thing on the whole menu. Love it! read more

Let me just start off by saying that I am no way a Debbie downer negative person... However, I could not believe what happened when I went to my favorite Thai spot...the place is over run with young inexperienced servers who don't understand the meaning or should I say concept of customer service. Place was empty, waited for water, had to call someone over to place my order then I wait 45 minutes for the food and what do you know the order was WRONG!! Wow, prices at Maile's have gone insane. One order of pad thai, one order of yellow curry and one order of sticky rice -- in other words, a little takeout for two. That'll be THIRTY DOLLARS, please! Thank goodness we didn't eat in, or our noodle and curry dishes would've cost nearly $18 each with tip. I'd rate the food a 3.5 out of 5 (curry flavor was great, beef was tough; pad thai could use more zest; sticky rice was perfect). Based on food, alone, I'd have no problem coming back. Overall, though, I'm left feeling just "bleh." It's been a little while since we were here last, but I still have the old menu, and let me tell you this: the prices on nearly all the ala carte items have increased in price by about 50% -- from $8.90 then for pad thai and curry to today's price of $12.90. I wanted to order ong choi tofu, which used to cost $7.90, but I axed that idea once I saw that it's now going for $11.90. I really can't fathom those kinds of increases when the restaurant looks the same and the food tastes the same, too. Sorry, Maile, but this is ridiculous. My buddies and I decided to stop by for some Thai on the way to Sandy's and we were pleasantly surprised! I remembered this place being average, but all the dishes we ordered this time around was really tasty! They have 6 different levels of spice, mild/moderate/hot/Thai hot/Lao hot/Maile hot. We got our food Thai hot with some Maile hot sauce on the side for the crazies in the group. We ordered Tom Yum, Pad Thai, Pineapple curry with pork, house fried noodle, and spicy scallops. Everything was very good and I would definitely come more often after this experience. Perhaps we just didn't order the right stuff the previous time... Ambiance is much nicer than most other Thai restaurants on island and would probably be the only one that would be considered "date night" worthy. Parking is a breeze as well and free! read more

I ordered the yellow curry which wasn't really a yellow curry. It was this weird looking cream paste thing. It was good but not the standard yellow Thai curry you'd expect. I also ordered the sticky rice which was really hard. $13.00 for chicken curry and sticky rice which is kinda pricy if you see how much was in it. The BEST Yellow Curry sticky rice I've had....but then again, I don't really go out looking for Thai food. This place is super romantic, right on the water, soft hue of purple and a FULL BAR. Okay, by now you must know I love alcohol. (Alcohol and Mexican food--go figure). I love this Thai place. I come here for takeout so often, the staff either recognize me for my order or recognize my name. The place is a Thai Bistro, so some complaints that the food isn't "authentic Thai" are kind of off-base. The food is delicious, flavorful and absolutely drool worthy. I am not an accurate judge of what's "genuine Thai cuisine;" my taste buds judge on what tastes good and makes my yummy happy vs what is greasy-but-tasty yet makes my stomach turn. I never have that problem here. The restaurant is small, but has a full bar and good amount of sitting. The atmosphere is great. And the menu caters to vegetarians like me. They always make efforts to cater to my diet. My husband was vegan and we never had many issues with them accommodating that. The staff is so friendly and awesome. I'm on first person basis with a couple employees here (Hi, Tyler!). I love that. I can't give it a full 5 stars due to the fact that the perfectly placed bistro's menu is pretty pricy for Thai, compared to similar restaurants in town. A 2 dish meal with 1 pupu and a side of rice will run about $40-44 with tip. On the pricy side. Of course, other local Thai joints wouldn't be as cushy and luxe in terms of decor or atmosphere as this place. The pricing still is enough to give only 4 stars. That, and, a handful of times, they forgot to remove the egg from my husband's vegan Pad Thai order, but other than that, no complaints. After a dozen attempts to truly enjoy this place, I give up. It's got great ambiance, nice table settings and all my favorite dishes. But the flavors are always so...muddled. Pad Thai is missing a vibrancy that lime would help. Portion sizes for the price are ill conceived. Even when dining on the office boss' dime, I can't get behind the prices. Thai food with a twist! This is one of my new favorite restaurants! Thai food isn't my favorite but this restaurant does it differently and I'm liking it! My husband and I had two types of noodles (chow fun and pad thai). I loved the chow fun and it was a vegetarian dish so extra points for all the veggie options on the menu! We also had the spring rolls. There is so much to pick from your taste buds will not be dissapointed (there is also steak and kahuku shrimp)! A lot of the dishes you are able to have spicy or not. My husband got a side of the spicy sauce so I could have some of his noodles and then he could make his half spicy. The service is always great here and I love love love the atmosphere. It is the perfect spot for an intimate date night or a girls night out. You will never have trouble finding parking here so even more extra points for that! This place is my favorite Thai spot and so happy it is next to home. Every dish has so much flavor & service is top notch. It's such a classy place of simple decor, white table cloth, and servers are all dressed in black. Food, service & atmosphere is always consistent. My family ordered Mailes for a little get together we ordered a day in advance scheduled a pick up got there on time was not ready, we where told it would take a couple of minutes more which turned into 45 minutes there was no apology. My order was over $300,during this time of Covid-19 we want to support local businesses but with that kind of attitude I wonder if certain businesses care about what the customer is trying to do to help. The staff was rude didn't even want to give us utensils when we asked like since we are doing take out don't you have utensils at home. The tip I left should have been 20% not 5% but really no tip should have been left. Just a really bad experience. I've been going to Maile's Bistro since they first opened. I have to say that this is the best Thai food in the state ! All the dishes were fantastic and the service was great ! I eat here a few times a month and have never had a bad experience here. They are always doing what they can to make you and your kids feel at home including the occasional complimentary fry for the kids ! Fantastic fresh seafood and vegetable dishes here. We went with a local who ordered for us and left stuffed and happy we tried new and different dishes. The lime fish was really fresh,tasty and clean. I usually don't get fish because I am ridiculously picky. I could have finished this dish myself. Other dishes I would just take a look at and then enjoy; the noodles and chow fun absorb whatever they are cooked with. The only negative from us haoles was the whole prawns cooked in the shell. It was almost impossible for us to get the meat separated from the shell and yes, I was told to eat them shell and all, no that's not for me personally. Last night I went and had the new york steak, green curry with chicken, and Spring rolls. Everything was excellent: the steak was medium rare with fresh mushrooms and onions, the curry was hot with great pieces of eggplant and chicken - light tasty and delicious. I was full but still kept eating the curry and sticky rice. Honestly this is the best thai curry I have had since Chicago. The staff is relatively attentive, but somehow disappears from time to time, certainly kind, but weird stuff happens like the phone rings really loud at the front desk with no one answering it. I think the manager/owner sits at the bar bullshitting around. Other than than I was so satisfied with the food I have to give this place an extra star from my last review. read more

I've heard that Mailes has taken a real nosedive in service recently since they opened another restaurant called Bellinis down on Ward. I guess all their best servers and bartenders are working the new restaurant leaving mediocre service at Mailes in Hawaii Kai. My friend wanted Thai food for lunch the other day while we waited for my Costco prescription to be filled so we headed over to Mailes. Our server was pretty nice and attentive. It was 2:30 on a Wednesday though so not very busy. The food and drinks came out fast and hot. Flavors were okay. It wasn't the best I've ever had but it did the job. First time at a new Thai restaurant I always try the pad thai, should be pretty straightforward and always ends up being a good indicator of other dishes. Well, unfortunately the pad thai I was served here was literally burnt. Yes, I never thought it was possible but it smelled burnt as soon as it arrived and yes indeed there were charred sections of noodles throughout the dish. Basically this overwhelmed any other flavors so obviously it was terrible. I can't even believe this dish would make it out to a customer. And we dined early so the place wasn't busy, as if that would have been any excuse! That said a lot about the restaurant right there. Also tried the tom kha soup as an appetizer, this was good but not great. Had a strange taste unlike any other I have had, couldn't put my finger on it. On a positive note, the service was great. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. Nice restaurant and very clean. Not sure if we will give it a second shot. It could have been an off day but it still doesn't sit well with me that a chef would send out burnt food. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to come across this little hidden gem in Hawaii Kai that serves up some very flavorful and amazing thai food. Friends brought me here for dinner and it is definitely a place I'd check out again! We ordered the maile rolls which are essentially their spring rolls which could taste the fresh ingredients they used and the peanut sauce complemented them well with just enough flavor. The fried chicken with the thai dipping sauce was a perfect blend of hawaiian and thai influences that just kept me eating them up! The phad thai offered just the right blend of flavors and the shrimp complemented the well-cooked noodles. The yellow curry was extremely flavorful and boasted just enough heat for the spice lovers and just a little too much for those spice avoiders! The one lowpoint on the menu was the seafood medley which was simply ok...it didn't wow me, but it also did not disappoint. Great ambiance and good service! Happy hour is a good deal. Good prices and appetizers seem good. Spring roles were tasty. The curry however is lacking authentic Thai flavor. The flavor is muddled, no sharp and clean flavors that are know to be Thai and then balanced and cooled by coconut milk. I want to pull for this restaurant, I hope the chef and owner take notice. I love Maile's Thai Bistro. I've only been a couple times because it's a bit out of the way, but it's got a lot going for it I really love the ambiance inside. It feels cozy, without being squished - and without being *too* close to other tables. I really love the presentation of all the food - you can tell they really care about making everything just right. Sorry I gave this place 3 try's to get a better score. I phone ordered lunch and got choy sum soup, 1 sticky rice and spring rolls. I picked up the order and went to my friends, the soup lid was disintegrated, literally. They put the soup in the takeout bowl so hot that it melted the lid. That's not very appetizing. Who wants to drink plastic melted chemicals in their soup. We were already passed Sandy Beach so we figure never mind we won't go back to get a new soup. Later that same night my husband wanted to eat Thai food (since I had some for lunch) so we ordered a bunch of things including two sticky rice.Since I just had sticky rice for lunch I recognize that the only gave me one serving. I called them and told them they only gave me one sticky rice. The lady insisted she gave me a double order in one larger bin. I told her I ordered lunch earlier and it's the same size bin as my 1 order of rice she asked me if the bin was 3 inches tall? No, I told her it's not is about an inch tall (why would I lie about 1 order of rice) She apologized and said that they mistakenly gave me 1 order of rice and they would gladly give me another order if I come and pick it up. I told her no thank you it's a far drive for me, she said they were super busy right now but a manager would call me back to give me a refund on the rice. Of course no one called me back and I never got a refund. Not surprising, (so really they stole from me) 3rd time last night we ordered take out, our order is wrong again. We ordered chicken fried rice and got pork fried rice, my son was so hungry he didn't want to wait for the correct order so he just picked out all the pork and the masaman curry was watered down so much it had no flavor. It was the first time I've seen him in over 10+ years. He's the reason I am as successful as I am in life today :-) It was his suggestion to go here for dinner, though I was wanting to take them to Roy's. Alas, this place is a whole 300yards closer to their home, and they said they eat there often. We had a number of appetizers, rather than ordering our own meals. I think we had about 7 different things between us. All of the items were good. Their idea of spicy is not that spicy, but of course, you can ask for some of their hot sauces on the side. Service was very friendly, and for the most part prompt. Though towards the end of the night, it seemed our initial waiter took a break, and was replaced by a couple of other guys instead. Maile's was our choice for "date night" without the kids for me and my husband. This is the third time we've visited. We were warmly welcomed and seated quickly. Our servers were very friendly and attentive throughout the evening. Maile even came to our table to thank us for coming. WOW! The food was very tasty and we just love the pad thai with beef. We also had the garlic soy fish (yum!) fried chicken, spring rolls and chicken long rice. For dessert, the crepe and coconut ice cream. I loved the coconut icecream!!!! It was nice and quiet and you can actually have a conversation, not like some restaurants where it's so noisy.
