We came here for brunch on a Sunday and there was plenty of seating. Lots of good options on the menu for both food and drinks/mocktails. We ordered lots of things including the steak eggs Benedict, creme brulee french toast, eggs royal, and Dakota steak. All of the dishes that had steak- the steak was over done. The cheap faux floral decor and Christmas lights set by the exposed ceilings were a vibe..and not a good one. A friend told me about how good Maison Cheryl was and I had to check it out for myself. It's located on a busy road in Arlington and has both indoor & outdoor dining. It got packed pretty quickly (although it was a Saturday night), so I would recommend making a reservation. Their menu was a decent size. I tried to check Yelp prior to ordering to see what some of their dishes would look like but it seems they mix it up seasonally, which is great! I ordered the truffle butter fries (a must), brussels + bacon, and baked brie for starters. I loved the baked brie, which came with grapes, pecans, honey, pear, and a fresh baguette. For apps, I tried the wagyu sirlion and my fiance ordered the seared duck breast -- which we both loved! Overall, it's a cute and quaint spot with great French food. This was my first time, and last, and the last time for my date, who use to be a regular customer. As a francophile this place was far from Paris as you could get. The good, quick seating (only 1/4 of the tables were in use) and the truffle fries are delicious. The bad, the cocktails were disgusting (Pear Necessities had no pear flavor and tasted like cheap wine), and the service is the reason I do NOT RECOMMEND this place. Our waiter, Alexandre, a young French man, curly dark hair , early 20s, with limited English and proper American service skills. He was overly attentive at first to the point of obnoxious. Pushy for us to order, which he didn't understand simple words like "ginger ale" or "soda", and kept coming over every 5 minutes asking to take half empty plates away while we were still eating. After the 6th time in 30 minutes we did tell him softly we would get his attention if we needed anything. 15 minutes later we asked for the check. 20 minutes go by and he ignores us. I had to go up to the bar and ask for the check from the bartender. Our waiter just stood there pretending I wasn't asking, and the bartender had to tell him to give us the check. Another 25 minutes goes by and he continues to ignore us when all we wanted to do was pay. I finally went back up to the bar, and tried to hand Alexandre our payment. He took one look at me, did a TWIRL through the kitchen door. His pettiness and attitude was beyond unprofessional. I asked the bartender ( a young petite African-American woman) for a manager; she said there wasn't any and she was "kinda acting like one". In fact, in a whole establishment of men she was the only person working. She was running the bar, being hostess and doing the bills. While these inexperienced male workers were being kids in the back kitchen. My date was humiliated as she recommended the place, and didn't want to leave a tip for him. The waiter needs to be fired and is the reason why we won't be returning and do not recommend this place. Believe the reviews that complain about service- it's awful. So we sat at the bar thinking we would get great service but that wasn't the case . Attentiveness to customers is sub par-Had to ask on two occasions for water refill. Then the group of four left and a woman came out spraying cleaner and mopping all around us. The smell of chemicals was awful. The food was very good except no bread was offered. That was odd. This place was absolutely fantastic. My friend and I saw this place open when we wanted a late night snack. The staff was so nice and quick and we had so much fun chatting with them. The service was also really quick too. We came back today for brunch and it was good enough that I could hear my friend but they had some memorable hits in the background. My friend got a fried tomato blt and I got the burger. We shared the baked to order madeleine, which was unbelievable. Not too sweet but sweet enough and the fruit was fantastic. Their truffle fries with aioli alone, I would come back for. The blue berry pancake was beautiful. I ordered a "just a lil kick" which is a spicy margarita which was delicious. I am sad to say that I was too disappointed in the service and general food of this place. This should not be considered a fine dining establishment - especially due to the poor servi. First off, the food is more French-inspired American cuisine, but there is very little hints of French cuisine on the menu. In terms of food and drink, we ordered the autumn fizz, honeynut soup, maison wagyu burger, and shrimp and scallop orriechette. The burger was far too salty, with no sweetness to balance out the flavors. I did however enjoy the char on the bun. The pasta was alright, no standout flavors. I had always walked by this restaurant while in Clarendon but never had a chance to drop by and I'm so glad I got a chance to try it out for brunch! Came at noon on a Saturday and it wasn't packed at all so we were able to grab a seat easily without reservations and the staff were kind welcoming us. The interior is cute and nice, which makes me surprised this place wasn't busy! My friend and I got shared a bottle of sparkling wine with orange juice for $20 and it did it's job perfectly. I had the truffle wagyu burger and it was so delicious alongside their crispy fries - the burger itself wasn't too salty or anything and the meat was soft in the middle and had a nice crisp on the outer parts. We also split the creme brulee french toast which was also so good - the creme sauce was a nice "dipping" sauce for the toast, which did have the brulee part on it underneath the strawberries and sugar and wasn't too sweet too which I loved. I would say everything was decently priced and I loved the food, service was attentive, and the ambiance was really nice. My recent experience at Maison Cheryl was absolutely delightful. They were doing a special limited menu (apparently the chef rotates seasonally and likes to try new things) and was fantastic from start to finish. Our first course was a beet citrus salad which included goat cheese and was based around this lovely roasted beat flavor that tied everything together really well. With a small bit of honeycomb on top, the salads overall flavor profile hit all the right notes. We paired the salad with a fried green tomato dish that had a perfect cream sauce. I've had overly fried tomatoes before but these were light and really flavorful. For entrees we got an order of the bay scallop + shrimp orecchiette which was highlighted by the unexpected but very good corn forward flavor. The serving size a little too large for me, but leftovers are never a real problem. In addition we had a salmon and mussel dish where the broth it was set in blew my mind. Cooked perfectly, both the salmon and mussels were great, but I could have enjoyed just a bowl of the broth with a loaf of bread. Being so full for the dessert I'm not sure if I truly appreciated the chocolate cake or cheesecake as much as I could have, but they were both a very nice conclusion to the meal. Our server was very attentive to us the entire night, never leaving us waiting or wanting for a single thing. Hubbant asked if I wanted to go out to eat and I said yes of course (the only good reason to put on pants these days) but he had to pick the place because I always have to pick. He loves French food so he suggested we try Maison Cheryl. He had the squash soup, beet salad, and steak frites. I asked Hubbant to help me write this review and he said his food was "good." I insisted he be more descriptive and he added the sauce au poivre was "au poivre-fect." So, he's fired. I had the deviled eggs three ways. My fave was the chipotle crema. I ate 5 of the 6 eggs but then I was full, which was a problem because I ordered the bucatini with the fried burrata for my entree. I barely made a dent in it and I wanted to cry because that zucchini herb sauce was so good I'd go swimming in a pool of it if I could. During dinner I tried to get Hubbant to help plan our anniversary trip to Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. The best he could muster was, "I think Croatia has some nice beaches?" So I hired him back only so I could fire him again. We were about to leave but Hubbant had to poop. I was annoyed at first -- he always has to poop when we are about to go anywhere -- but this ended up being a good thing because he returned with valuable intel: the bathroom was a "one header" (solo bathroom). I recently visited Maison Cheryl and it was a fantastic experience. The meal started with a beet, whipped goat cheese, citrus, and arugula salad that was fresh and flavorful--a great option to share between two people. Another fun appetizer was the fried green tomato tart. It was lightly fried (not greasy at all) and served over a delicious bread with a creamy sauce that added great texture. The real standouts were the salmon and mussels. The mussels were some of the best I've ever had, and the salmon was cooked to perfection. I highly recommend asking for a side of bread to soak up the amazing broth--I didn't leave a single drop! We also tried the scallop and shrimp pasta, which was pretty good, served in a creamy tomato sauce. For dessert, the chocolate cake with raspberry sauce was decent, though not particularly memorable. The cheesecake, however, was fun with two mini cheesecake rounds and a vanilla sauce that tasted like a mix between custard and melted ice cream. We went during the week and it wasn't crowded, service was great and our waitress made sure our drinks were never empty. The vibes were really modern French Café with clean and simple decor and slightly dimmed lighting, which made it seem more intimate. Came her for a brunch with a larger group and between the excellent cocktails, great wine selection, and tasty brunch offerings, this is a real winner! The espresso martini was delightful with quite a smooth finish. I was really grateful for the server as they addressed my mother's gluten allergy with great care, and my mother really enjoyed the french eggs! The breakfast carbonara was outstanding. It caught my eye and I couldn't move off of the allure of bacon, cream sauce, cheese, poached egg and pasta - YUM! It was peppery, cheesy, and very rich and both my sister and I practically licked the plate. We also had some of the desserts, and the fresh fruit with the madellines were tasty in addition to the fresh creme. We ordered three appetizers: arugula salad, shrimp tempura and cauliflower. Entrees: duck, salmon and bouillabaisse. The food was delicious. Ingredients fresh and prepared with perfect seasoning and presented with style. The kitchen did a superb job! The service was not good. The restaurant was half full when we arrived without a reservation. We were told by a very snotty blonde hostess : " I will give you a table, but you have to leave in a hour." We were seated at a table way in a back where no one could see us. Literally isolated from the rest of the diners. Don't know why. Few minutes later a personable server asked to take our order, so we mentioned that since we were told we had only an hour to eat we'd better order our drinks and food as quickly as possible. Our three appetizers and drinks were delivered quickly by another server, who told us she would take over our table without any explanation as to why the switch. Furthermore, she was not aware that we hadn't given our main entree orders, and that we were given only an hour to eat our meal. Luckily, all our food came quickly and we enjoyed the food. Our dining experience was marred by the blonde hostess' unfriendly attitude and her questionable demand that we had only an hour to dine there even though the restaurant had several empty tables when we left at 7. We left to get dessert elsewhere where we were treated much better even though the restaurant was full. Ambiance: casual- not at all fancy. Attitude of hostess and service staff : not very friendly or professional. Conclusion: Kitchen staff: superb exemplified by the exceptional quality of each of the 6 dishes we ordered. Dining room staff: not good rendering our overall experience sub-par. We agree with other reviewers on the service here. Came here for a dinner and the food was delicious. Most of the dishes here are on the pricier end but the portion of food served was rather proportional to the price. I had ordered foie gras as an appetizer and was happily surprised by the amount of foie gras served. It was really flavorful served with some bread, frisee, and fruit compotes and jams to cut through the fattiness. For my entree, I ordered duck. It was tender and really delicious and is cooked on the rarer side so I'd recommend telling wait staff your preferred doneness if you're not a huge fan of meat cooked medium rare. The crispy zucchini added some textural contrast and the bread pudding was savory and filling. The blackberry demi-glace was really savory and pretty good but I think I would've preferred a more fruity sauce to cut through all the heavy elements in the dish. For dessert, I got a raspberry cheesecake which had the perfect balance between tart and sweet. Service was pretty good. The wait staff often stopped by to check up on us. The good news is that the food is amazing. Delicious. The bad news is everything else. We arrived at 4:55 for a very early 5:00 reservation. There was a rowdy group of 8 or 10 people in the back. The rest of the place was empty. We wanted to be able to talk so we requested to sit away from the large group. Our hostess/server seemed annoyed by this. She sat us at a two top right by the front door between the bar and a sea of empty four tops. We were informed that we could not be seated anywhere but this two top or one closer to the large group. The four tops were still empty when we left. All except for one, a family of four (parents and two young children) who during our meal were seated inches from our table. Again, the place was empty. We sat for a while after finishing our meal. We had to seek out another server to get a desert menu. Our server continued to be absent and unpleasant, as she was from the time she seated us. The problems with this place are all fixable but I would not recommend it until they are able to treat their customers as if they were glad they had chosen to eat there. read more

5 star food and cocktails, 1 star service, so I split the difference. Additionally, the ambiance was nice, but pricing (as reflected in some of the 1-star reviews on here) was manipulative, i.e. the same cocktails listed in different places on the menu at wildly different prices. This was almost enough to take it down to 1 to 2 stars, except that the food was so so, so so, so so so good. Rocky start when we came in. We had made a reservation but arrived to a nearly empty restaurant except for one large seated group with children. There were only two people working in the front of house, a bartender and a hostess who was also acting as server. The bartender never acknowledged or interacted with us, and our hostess/server was incredibly nonchalant. The floor was oddly slippery, to a point where I felt like I had to walk carefully, and I said the floor was slippery out of surprise and she just kind of shrugged aobut it? This is the part that had me almost leave before we even ordered. We sat down and opened our menus and on one side was the brunch menu - which was a lot shorter than I thought it was going to be from what I had seen online - and on the other side was an extensive cocktail and wine menu, bursting with French-style cocktails. The cocktail menu was exciting to me. But then I noticed that a handful of cocktails were included at the bottom of the brunch menu as well. These were identical to some of the cocktails on the cocktail menu, but were all priced $2-$3 higher. I pointed this out to the server in confusion and her response was that they wanted brunch to be appealing and special so they made the prices lower. What? So then I pointed out that, no, actually, the brunch cocktails were priced *higher*. The $13 Aperol spritz on the cocktail menu, for instance, was $16 on the brunch menu. My friend's espresso cocktail was $14 on the cocktai menu and $17 on the brunch menu. Same drink. The server seemed completely oblivious to all this and so promised to charge us the lower prices. I mean. Do they think we're stupid? Then the cocktails actually arrived and suddenly we were happy we stayed. Best Aperol spritz I've ever had. Such a simple cocktail, you might think, can it really vary that much? Yes, it can. My friend kvelled about her espresso drink, as well. And they were beautifully presented. Then the food came. My friend got a simple and reasonably priced French scrambled egg plate that she was happy with but it's hard to marvel at it. I, however, got the bucatini carbonara sans bacon (pescetarian) and it may be the best pasta I've ever had. It wanted its bacon back, but even without the meat, this was really, really good. Unfortunately, while our server came to check on us once right after our food came out, she never returned. We watched the restaurant steadily fill up with other patrons, but nobody came to assist her, so she was literally handling the entire restaurant except for the bar. But, honestly, that wasn't the problem. The problem was that she was aloof and had no hustle. She walked by us several times without seeming to notice that our cocktail glasses had run empty. We might have each ordered another...20 minutes ago. It took a long time for her to clear our plates and bring us our bill, as well. When we did finally get the bill, we'd been charged the higher prices. So we had to flag her down and ask her to fix it. She did exactly as we wanted and lowered the prices, but her whole attitude about it was so...vacant. She wasn't rude or disagreeable or anything. More like an expressionless robot, or like she was focused on something else. It's really unfortunate because if the service matched the food this place would be unstoppable, and I suspect that service is the reason this place wasn't packed. A lot of other customers who seemed to be in the know came and sat at the bar and I think that was the right idea. To that end, it is worth noting that, despite how good the food is, the bar itself is the star of the show. It's a bar with good food, not a restaurant with a good bar. The extensiveness of the cocktail menu, the fact that the cocktails were the Frenchest thing about the menu, and the execution of the cocktails make this a destination for drinks, and an alternative to the speakeasy-style bars that dominate the higher end of DC's cocktail scene (not that I don't love them). My recommendation to future clientele is to forego the restaurant experience and just come for cocktails, though do order a dish or two there at the bar if you get hungry. My recommendation to the chef, assuming the chef is the owner/in charge, is to find better management for the front of the house. read more

We eat here every time we travel to DC and our food was excellent, as usual! Very fun happy hour cocktails at the bar to start. The service was great - I saw some older reviews, looks like management took the feedback to heart. Our server was very attentive, and we loved the music and ambiance. We really enjoyed our brunch here! We had great service- everyone who worked there was very friendly and attentive- and the food was solid. We started off with cocktails that were both solid (one had gin and orange blossom and one was a rosé aperol spritz)- I think the $20 deal for a bottle of sparkling wine + juice would be really fun for a group too. For entrées, we had the spicy fried chicken sandwich and the eggs royale. The chicken sandwich wasn't very spicy, but it was a good sized portion and the chicken was tasty and good quality. The fries were delicious, too! The eggs royale were kind of a twist on a benedict that was fun, I don't think I've seen one with lox and avocado before. Solid brunch option in Clarendon that I'd definitely come back to. read more

Had the pleasure of visiting Madison Cheryl on Sunday. Review in a snapshot - the drinks and food very good!!! The service is a little bit slow regardless of it being a quiet Sunday evening. I am aware they are still very new and I'm positive that they'll figure it out. Perhaps hiring another server would help. The host was also our waiter and the bartender was making drinks and running the food from the kitchen. Once our food was served no one checked in on us to see if we needed anything or how we were liking our food. What we ordered! First drinks, I got the gin, cucumber, and mint drink and that tasted fantastic!! My fiancé got an old fashioned and he said it was great! For food I got the Chilean Sea Bass and the flavor was fabulous!! I would recommend ordering the Chilean Sea Bass. My fiancé ordered the Maison Burger and he loved it!! It has Brie cheese on it and he loves Brie cheese. Everything from the toppings to the French Fries were delicious. Definitely will come back and try some more drinks and entrees!! read more

This is a solid place to sit and relax. They do not have a lot of fluff in terms of decor, but that is the charm. I feel like too much decor could take away from the focus on the food. For me, this reminds me of a quaint little bakery shop and it is peaceful. Nothing outlandish and nothing over the top. The food is similar in that they just focus on simple offerings and it is prepared simply. I dont think the food is something that stands out from the other places nearby, but if you want something simple and safe, this is the place to be. What I really appreciated from this place were the cocktail offerings. It is relatively rare to see some modern classic cocktails on a menu such as the penicillin or the paper plane. I was curious and intrigued. They dont have the full cocktail bar spectrum, but the fact that they have these offerings made me feel safer to order cocktails from them. I generally avoid cocktails from a place where all I see is an old fashion and a margarita. If you want something simple, I would stop by. read more

This has been on my list of places to try; I was happy to see them open the night we went, bc a couple other times I've tried during listed hours, the place was not open. Positives were trying items not commonly found, such as frog legs and stuffed squash blossoms, friendly service in a pretty black-and-white bistro setting. Negatives were that the food and flavors were just ok in relation to the price point. The table was too small for the dishes we ordered. Overall, 3.5 is a decent rating; checked off the list, but not saved as a favorite. read more
