I rarely write reviews in Yelp - - really only when I have something incredible to talk about. Well, today is one of those days. I want to tell you about KC. A little over two years ago I met KC while my then boyfriend was getting his haircut. I HATED my hair. I flat out hated it. The cut was bad, the color worse, and the look was definitely not something I was proud of. And, it was way shorter than I wanted - - the result of prior haircuts gone bad. Why was this? A lot had to do with me. I'm all about convenience. I'm a very busy person that does not like wasting time in traffic or driving to/from places. My attitude showed in my hair. I'd been going to places that were close to my house and work. I sat in their seat, they did their work, and I left - - usually not happy. That all changed the day I met KC - - she is now the ONLY person I ever want to work on my hair - - my attitude about has my hair and hair care changed drastically. Although I didn't have an appointment with KC, when I asked, she said she could definitely help me out while she waited for her next client. What she did in a few minutes was incredible. A few cuts here and a few snips there resulted in a truly cute hair style. My mind woke up. Wow, if she could do what she did in such a short period, what could she do if I had a real appointment and time? A month later I found out. KC didn't just ask what I wanted. She actually looked at my hair, my face, the coloring of my skin, and the weird widow-peaks in my bangs area. We talked about what cut and color would work best for my wavy hair, square face, and pale skin. And then the magic began. KC didn't just color my hair. She painted in beautiful rainbows of color - - reds, golds, browns and blonds. And even though she textured my hair quite a bit (I admit, I was a little afraid it would be too short), I left with the most full, beautiful, bouncy hair I could imagine. I felt fierce! I felt radiant! I was addicted!! Since that first day, I have never gone to another stylist nor would imagine doing so in the future. What started 2+ years ago as a really bad, short shaggy mess of hair is now below bra level, healthy, gorgeous, and ever evolving. And, although I'm still all about convenience, I would drive hours to have KC style my hair. Not only is she incredibly talented, she is also one of those rare individuals that is really a good person. Very likable. Very sweet. Fun to talk with. A genuinely wonderful human. If you want an experience that exceeds your expectations with a true hair "artist", I highly recommend you step out of the norm and into KC's world of stylistic magic. read more

Chris is a freaking hair genius! I was actually somewhat referred to Chris because I did a shoot with a friend and he was the makeup artist. Chris did such a phenomenal job with my hair style, curling it where it would NEVER curl before and it staying for the entire day with just a few spritz of hair spray, that I decided to go back for a hair cut. I typically get a trim, and whenever I walk into an Asian salon, since I have ... Asian hair ... I'll tell them what I want and they listen, but then they just do whatever they feel is more appropriate. I guess that's the thing with Asian people :P they always think they know more about it than you do! I went to Chris and explicitly said I just wanted a trim, and layers, and shorten my bangs but keeping the same style and he basically worked magic. I came out with amazing, non frizzy, non split ends hair, that wasn't too short or much shorter than what I wanted before, AND he took the time to give me curls again but in a completely different style! Wow. I got my haircut by Rachel Mae and I am blown away! The idea of the cut I wanted was kind of vague and Rachel took the time to ask me questions about different styles and textures, explaining them when I wasn't sure what I wanted. She was so patient and explained what she was doing before she started each step. I felt SO well taken care of. The end result is seriously one the best haircuts of my life. Everything falls just where it's supposed to. I feel like such a babe!! This my Most Overdue Review of The Year. After only 3 haircuts, I'd follow Rachel Mae from studio to studio -- and already have followed her from her old studio to Antoni Paez. It's been decades since I've found a stylist this good. She's an artist, meticulous, has an interesting eye and gives different people different looks. No one I saw her work on looked cookie cutter. Everyone looked liked themselves. One reason it took so long to get to this review is because I meant to go back and check previous reviews to make sure nobody gets more than a 4 star. She's the 5. Yes there are stylists in Palo Alto but I make the drive to San Jose to see her because 1.) stylists in Palo Alto don't know about bombshell/vintage style 2.) don't really believe middle-aged women when they say they don't want to look like soccer moms and techno-corpocrats, and 3.) certainly don't think they mean it if they claim to want some edge to their look because, hey, - if you don't fit in with the soccer/crats, ya might as well let 'em know who's coming, no;)? This review is for the Rosegarden location. It's a small space, but not quite as small as the Willow Glen location. However, it's got a cool vibe, tastefully decorated, and from what I know and have seen, all of the stylists here are extremely skilled, and clients walk out looking like a million bucks! My stylist, Jeanne, has been here for a year + now. She made a move from 5 Color Cowboy down the street from Antoni Paez and prior to that, she was at FAUX. So, in my opinion, she's one of the best in the Southbay, considering all of her previous experience (and many years of) in some of the top salons around here. Ok, ok, so I'll disclose that we're also friends and went to high school together. When she was a stylist in training, I was one of a few who gladly would be a "practice" head of hair for her. I went through many cuts, spiral perms and colors with her, and NEVER EVER have been unhappy with any of them! I received and still do receive many compliments on my hair cuts and anything else that Jeanne has ever done. She's known me long enough to know my style or what I'd be comfortable with, that I give her free reign and have complete trust in her. She's open to any ideas you may have, and she'll in turn give you suggestions. She has many loyal clients, including myself, who have been going to her for years which is a testament to how freakin' good she is ! Not to mention, she's very personable, stylish and fun. There's a selfish part of me (at least I admit it!) that hates to refer her because it means another client on her list which makes it harder to get an appointment--HA! My review is for the Rosegarden Location. It's small but so sassy inside...and they have the best smut magazines. When I go, I want to rest and get fabulous and indulge in celebrity gossip. This is what I get at Antoni Paez. The review is mainly for my girl Jeanne C- my hairstylist for-I don't know- EVER. She's giving me highlights, wedding updos, blonde hair, bobbed, and now covers my gray. I've followed her from Faux to 5 Color Cowboy to here and wherever she goes. She has great personality and style and I love coming in to see what new hairstyle and SHOES she has on. She is THE BEST by far and listens to what I want and has opinion on what look is best for me. Unfortunately I had a destination wedding so couldn't use her for my wedding hair, but she did my husband's and he looked so good. I have finally found a place that works for me. Antoni has two salons, both are in San Jose. The first was in Willow Glen and the newest one is in the RoseGarden. Both locations are about 20 minutes from where I live, but I don't mind going out of my way to see him. I've never had better haircuts, coloring and more compliments!! Antoni is a good friend and I know his work ethic is solid. He is very particular about the work that is done in his salons and he screens and trains each of his stylists. I have never seen a bad cut or color job done in his spaces. Antoni is not pushy or demanding, like some stylist can be. When you are in his chair, your wish is your command. I had been friends with him for a few years and not once did he pressure me into booking an appt with him. I was simply not happy with my previous stylist in Palo Alto and after time, chose to visit Antoni. It's the best decision I've made for my hair. He corrected the bad coloring job my previous stylist had done. All that time before, I thought my hair was just dry and here it was because the coloring was too harsh. When I can't get an appt with Antoni, or need a last minute job, I go to Rafael, who works in the Rose Garden location. Tami, Laurie and Jarman are also great stylists as well. I was a "walk-in" a couple years ago and got Nicole. I've been with her ever since! She knows how to cut and style hair. And that's not easy when you have straight, black hair like me. I know she keeps up to date with the latest trends and styles through training, so she's always getting even better. She's very friendly and sweet and is a great conversationalist. Laurie Rosenswig was my stylist back then, when she moved over from the Plum Spa. Since then I've adopted Kelli O'Niel who just gave me a fabulous cut and great highlights. Just got my haircut from Antoni and let me tell you, I feel like a brand new person! They have reopened after being closed for months due to covid and it is very clean inside with all stylists following social distancing protocols. Rafael really knows what he's doing. I initially came in with dark brown/blackish hair & wanted to go blonde. Rafael took the time to explain to me how the coloring process works and how he would get me the color I wanted over time. I actually went to the Willow Glen location from a recommendation of a friend, "who by the way had great hair herself." She told me to ask for Nicole, so I did and I was excited when I saw the young friendly girl who greeted me. She put me at ease seeing that this would hopefully be the fix I was looking for after a nightmare haircut several months before. The whole way she made sure she understood what I wanted and worked slowly to achieve exactly what I wanted. I couldn't have been happier with the results. Since then I have gone back to her and have had excellent results again, she even showed me how to train a frustrating cowlick to behave. I totally recommend this place especially Nicole. read more

Since the closure of my local go-to salon, I've been shopping around for another stylist....and Rafael is it! I have long, naturally curly hair, and it's easy to get the shape of it wrong. I called for an appointment and they gave me one with someone named Nicole. It's funny because I was not familiar with her prior to my first appointment with her. Well, I absolutely love her! She has always been so incredibly good to me and I have the best time every time I go. She cares so much about exactly what it is that I want, that sometimes, I think she acts with over caution. Nicole Hoke is the best curly girl stylist I have ever been to. Like the previous review I have been trying to tame my mop for years. I started going to this salon b/c it was recommended and I HATE trying new salons. The main reason I went to AP was b/c when I went back home I had my hair done by my old salon, (but by a different girl then who used to do my hair, since she was off due to the sabbath) it got JACKED UP and required a color correction. Rafael did my color correction (he said it required 3 colors, which were $50 each at least) and I LOVED my new color - I did something totally different. Unfortunately, in pics it came out looking a bit too dark, (not his fault) and since I am so pale, it gave me an emo look (not my style). I went back for my touch up a few months later and told him that I loved the color but what was happening in the pics....so he lightened it. Again I really liked the color, but it seem to have faded really quickly, like within a month (and I was using color safe shampoo/conditioner). But I kept going back (I don't know why....). On my last visit, I knew that I was early, so I waited.....Rafael was not with anyone (so I am not sure at the reason to make me wait), and then came over to inform that I was 30 min early for my appt (I thought I was only 15 min early) and that they had cancelled it b/c they were not sure that I was coming b/c I did not confirm. He then tried to tell me that he was trying to be accommodating by getting me in on another eve after work and would be staying late for me. I took the appt, b/c I was desperate. Once I got home after this ORDEAL, I immediately found another salon and I cb to cx my appt and told they I would NEVER be coming back! read more

I scheduled an appointment with Debra after a friend recommended her. Debra was nice and friendly and explained the different options for my hair type. I had been in hair hibernation for more than 2 years (new baby) and I thought it time to get back out there into the hair style world. After my scheduled cut and highlights I was happy with the end result, but left the salon with sticker shock. Ouch - $250 for hair and partial highlights. Bottom line - If you have the cash and don't mind the price tag I would recommend, otherwise I'm sure more economical yet stylish options are out there. Only 3 stars awarded due to price. read more

In between those years I've been to some good and bad hairdressers out of curiosity, because of impatience, because it was cheaper, on a whim, during the shaggy, growing out phases, but mostly because Antoni's salon is far away. Finally, I came to the realization that some things are not only worth the money, but worth the long drive because Antoni always did the magic cut on my hair from any state of disaster. Recently I was referred to Rafael by a friend and decided to try it out because I wanted to change my hairstyle. Although the hair cut price is not what I am used to, Rafael's work makes it worth it! I've been here twice already now and love it. Rafael Valencia had been my hairdresser for about 2 years before I moved out of state. He used to give me a rad haircut every time, for less $$ than what some people pay for run-of-the-mill stuff. It's hard to find someone who knows how to cut curly hair, especially long curly hair, so if you are like me and you like your hair to look good without having to spend a lot time styling it every day, then you should get an appointment with Rafael.
