Located on Melrose and Kingsley, Maison Matho is on a very busy section near the 101 freeway entrance on Normandie. Is there parking? Street parking can be a bit tough I think. I did see some folks pull up and pick up their orders so I believe ordering ahead for pick up is an option. Fortunately for me, Matho is just two blocks from my childhood home, so during a visit to my parents, following our late lunch I was struck with an urge for a good latte and some fresh air. "Let's walk to Maison Matho" What did I order? The Pink Praline Latte is a 5/5 stars in flavor. Sooo good, it crossed my mind to order a second one, even before I got halfway through the one in my hand. Service with a smile :-) The folks here are so nice. We arrived just 30 minutes before closing. They noticed we were enjoying the street side bench seating while sipping our lattes and allowed us to sit a bit longer past the closing. In comparison to other coffee shops pricing is def a bit on the high side but in my opinion, what they deliver on flavor and quality definitely makes up for it. Four years ago, in the midst of the pandemic, he aimed to address that unfilled niche through his humble takeout window, Maison Matho. This French-leaning coffee shop specializes in French breakfast fare and baked goods, and plenty of Angelenos are braving the bumper-to-bumper Melrose traffic to try them. Matho set up shop in the street-side room of a multipurpose complex sandwiched between apartment buildings. Colorful abstract murals are painted directly onto the salmon-toned walls, and the wide, raised ordering window is shaded by a black awning. To the left, a dedicated dining space is set up within the gated, canopied patio. The hum of a ventilator unit blends with the buzz of street traffic. The sandwiches each featured Matho's crisp house baguette. However, the simplicity wasn't met with consistency. I preferred the Bresaola Sandwich, loaded with plentiful parchment-thin slices of meat. The best bites incorporated salty-and-savory bresaola with zesty lemon and crunchy whole pistachios; however, just as many bites were devoid of one or multiple key ingredients, ending up falling flat. Meanwhile, the Jambon Buerre (a classic Parisian ham-and-butter sandwich) felt relatively tame and one-dimensional; only the few bites with the tart sliced cornichons were anything more than standard. Lastly, the signature Pink Praline Brioche Bun was mostly forgettable. The dry, sweetened bread was only slightly enhanced by a thin glaze and scattered sweet-and-crunchy pralines. The service has always been prompt, and my order pick-up has been a breeze on both occasions. Unfortunately, the portion sizes feel modest for the premium price -- a single "half" sandwich is just too small for a satisfying lunch, but still runs near $15. I would consider this place a stand, not a restaurant but nonetheless it was really good. Really chill vibe. Parking can be an issue but we got lucky and found a spot across the street. French themed with different pastries and sandwiches available. Coffee options available as well. Price was on the higher side for lunch but we also ordered the most expensive items from the menu. I had to try the omelette with trout roe and the pink praline late. Once we ordered at the window we found a spot under the shaded patio area they have right next to the stand. Fulfilling my own promise and coming back for their sandwiches! Not to miss the opportunity, we tried both the Jambon Beurre and Daniel's Favorite which was basically the Jambon one but with prosciutto instead of ham. Both were soooo good just like what everyone's been shouting, and it's indeed the butter which became their secret sauce! It's impressive how the simple meat, butter, cornichons combo could turn out that tasty. If we had to choose one, our pick was the prosciutto one just because it's more salty so it balanced the butter well. Although I probably wont be back, as $22 per sandwich is a little steep for me, overall the food was really good. Parking is limited but my husband and I found a spot not terribly far and walked up to the super cute and clean window. We ordered the Omelette Sandwich and Daniel's Favorite. The Omelette Sandwich had a tad muted flavor and was dry, but was overall tasty; I just about destroyed the roof of my mouth with the bread. The eggs were really light and perfectly cooked though. It's definitely on the high end but didn't expected to be on this side on the neighborhood. The sandwich was great, great combo but the baguette was not toast or heat up so it be chewy. The butter is definitely bring the whole thing together and it a lot in the sandwich for sure, so glad that I when to the gym prior. I can felt my heartbeat and my fat appreciated a lot. Honestly, I could eat the baguette alone and be happy. The omelette sandwich was quite messy, so grab plenty of napkins. I thought the butter would be heavy, the taste was more like a light cream cheese with a butter aftertaste. Because of the butters lightness I preferred the Dave's sandwich which had more flavor . Oof. Where do I start with the review for Maison Matho? Street parking is only available in and around the neighborhood. Lucky if you can find some right in front of the store. It's a hole in the wall type place with some outside seating. Only one customer in front of us but somehow took nearly 10 minutes for our turn because they were busy chatting. Once it was my turn ordering, I found the woman's attitude curt and rude. It isn't like she was unaware of the now long line behind me. Very French in that sense. I ordered the 6-minute egg and tomato tartine because the ham and cheese croissant was sold out. Both items were garbage in my opinion. The tomato was oozing water from the salt they used. Oh why hello osmosis effect. That doesn't go well together with flaky crust that was otherwise over-baked and crumbled everywhere. Do you like your tartine / croissant type dough baked and "flaky" like shards? You may like it then. It also needed some black pepper or something to add more flavor to the salted tomato compote like crap oozing with water. The 6-minute egg was a ghastly surprise. I didn't read the menu description in detail and wasn't aware it will be a cold soft boiled egg floating in aspic jelly and edible flowers + shredded pink prosciutto with beans. No. No thank you. Had I known this, this would have been a hard pass. The sandwich my friend got looked underwhelming too. A dry baguette with prosciutto and some pickled vegetables. Very bland and unappetizing looking. Something a Dutch or German native would have lapped it up and be happy. To me this place seems overhyped for the quality of food a service it renders. Has street parking, by street in front of residential. More outside pick up with some small tables/benches. Ordering was fast, they take card. Limited menu. They didn't have all the crossiants today when we went around lunch time. Jambon beurre- ham is thinly sliced and taste a bit like sharp cheddar (less salty more dry and less processed seeming/gelatinous than American ham). The half size is on a mini baguette, which is on the chewier and toasties side. The cornichons are sour and crunchy has a nice bite. The butter doesn't seem like French butter- doesn't have that characteristic richness and is unsalted. The size of it offers a substantial bite, but i think to my unexperienced palate would've done well with some cracked black pepper or something to offer more slip to the tongue. I still liked trying it. The 6 minute egg was interesting... unknowingly we did not read the description and was so surprised at the aspic jelly. It is very avante guarde to me LOL the egg was indeed soft boiled and encased in a broth like jello. There are a few pieces of proscuitto lining the bottom of the egg. It was seasoned with seasonal veg/herbs but the coldness threw me off. They also gave a side of cut roasted bread. I would think very little people order this though.. My friend also got a tomato tartin- the tomatoe is flavored well, but unfortunately the wateriness of the tomatoe caused it to slide off the pastry. The pastry dough was also nice and crispy on the edges. So separately great components. The chef inside is friendly, this place seems popular amongst French ppl or locals who live in the area. Delicious! With friendly and quick service. The baguette was so good it could be enjoyed on it's own, but add jambon beurre and it was divine! We also tried the almond croissant, it was lovely, the almond flavor was not strong, my favorite part of it was where the almond paste had seeped out during baking and created this lovely caramelized crust at the bottom... a perfect pair with coffee! They have a small covered patio to enjoy your food, but no restroom. The only downside to this place is its location.. it's not a great area to walk and during rush hour you can't park in front on Melrose, so we found side street parking and walked.. but the walk was a land mind full of trash and dog poo.. not fun. There's always so many places to eat delicious food in LA and the competition for your time, money, and calories is easy. This place will always secretly be in my top 5. The food is always hands down perfect and savored and- honestly transports you to delicious bliss. So much so- that it's so easy to forgive the higher price point for a no sink/bathroom, no wet towelettes to wipe your hands fingers before/after when eating that glorious baguette, and the low key obnoxiously arrogant person who takes your order that kind of kills your energy hard (the lady who used to be there more often is deeply missed). The storefront is a cute lil spot tucked into Melrose, but after ordering it was pretty apparent there was no where to sit and eat. We did find a table on the sidewalk, but it was barely enough to fit our plates. Not to be picky, but they were also out of water, we kindly asked to fill, but it took as much time to cook as it did to fill the water cooler. We were pretty thirsty. Workers seemed stretched thin. Maybe this place needs more employees. The eating area was full, and even if we could get a table, none of them had chairs. There's benches on one side, but where are the chairs? We ended up sitting out front, on the edge of the baking sun in a bench with a mini table. It was nice at first, better than the small dining area, but soon enough it got filled around with people ordering and waiting for orders. Lastly the food was okay. The Jambon Beurre was 10/10, if this was just a review of that it'd be 5/5, but the Bresaola was pretty bland, and importantly the bread was kinda a few hours stale. I drive by Maison Matho weekly on my way to work but was also unmoved by its unassuming storefront. After seeing pictures of their sandwiches I finally gave it a try. I ordered the jambon beurre, an espresso, and an almond croissant for pickup. It was a bit pricy for a hole in the wall in east Hollywood, but my oh my was it tasty! I expected espresso quality to be poor compared to your standard LA cafe but it was surprisingly good, better quality than a Sightglass even. It paired perfectly with the fantastic, fluffy vanilla brioche, which they substituted for my almond croissant because it had sold out before I arrived for my pickup order. The sandwich was fairly large and I loved the pickles. The bread was a bit too hard which I've seen other reviewers note as well, I get it's a baguette but in France I've had this sandwich with bread that didn't hurt my teeth. Otherwise a must-order. My biggest complaint is I got an email that it was ready at 2:10, but it wasn't actually ready until 2:30 so I was late to my event. They also gave me a free croissant but didn't tell me, so it fell onto the ground and shot a million crumbs all of the floor of the gym of my event. We ordered the Bresola and Daniel's favorite sandwiches. I would give the Bresola a solid 4/5! I think it could some more greens and pistachios, but it was still yummy! Daniel's favorite was definitely my favorite sandwich. I give it a 5/5. It had some sort of cream cheese with prosciutto and pickles, and I think the ingredients all complimented each other. We also ordered the 6 minute egg, which is a must try! Would give this a 5/5. It comes with pieces of fresh baguette and you're supposed to eat it with the egg. The egg was rich and creamy and tasted amazing on the baguette! The baguette was soft but crunchy at the same time. Definitely tasted fresh. The cornichons were a necessity and the butter was good butter and all that is a good thing but the Jambon, what should be the star, was underwhelming to say the least.
