This is a cozy, smaller spot in Irvine that hits the mark for both speed and flavor. The food comes out quickly without compromising on quality. I love that they offer a salad and meat option if you're looking for something lighter than a full plate of rice. The portion size was perfect for me, but if you have a larger appetite, I'd definitely recommend adding a few sides. Highly recommended for a satisfying, fuss-free lunch or dinner!
Finally tried this spot. Place was empty due to the time we went (4:45-5p). Great customer service, even as more patrons arrived. Good portion of food. -katsu was crispy & not dry -curry offers different levels of spice. We had the standard spice since it was our first time. Karage: I can skip it. Not bad but nothing to say about it. Cheese Katsy: skip it, it looked like gritty Alfredo sauce. I'd go back. There's a few other plates that I would like to try.
Curry Sauce: Good Chicken Cutlet: Good Cheese Sauce: Pass I've never heard of Maji Curry in name, but with a descriptor of Award Winning Japanese Curry, you kinda get the feel that you gotta give em a try if that's their specialty. The interior is small with limited capacity under 25 or so people. They have bar and table seats to accommodate medium sized groups, but our group of 3 was able to be seated with little wait. I've had my fair share of curry, but not very often do I experience it with a cheese sauce. I decided to be a lil adventurous and jump on that cheesy bandwagon. While aesthetically pleasing and fun to pour on top, the sauce itself was very grainy. Once cooled, it was kinda gross if you dip your cutlet in it since it had a clumpy mouthfeel. Not ideal.. Got standard spice level and regular rice size, but if you customize you can choose larger rice portions or spicier levels. Overall for me, the curry flavor wasn't super memorable as I don't find myself craving it again. I'd rather make it myself from the curry cubes or go elsewhere lol. If I had to return, I'd pass on the cheese sauce.
Small but clean restaurant. Service was friendly and prompt. We got the hamburger curry, beef curry, and the chicken katsu curry. Everything was delicious. Curry is slightly leaning towards sweeter side. Hamburg was good but very small. The beef curry was a little chewy. Not the melt in your mouth beef im used to from curry house. The chicken katsu was the best. Perfectly fried.
I'm a huge fan of the curry sauce here. It's a small store but the service is still relatively quick. I usually get Level 5 spice paired with a lot of the sweet/tangy pickled veggies in the jar. And.. by a lot, I mean I devour the whole jar and would want to ask for more. The rice is sometimes unevenly cooked. The meat is as expected, really... it's a curry shop, not a katsu bar -- so i'm there for the flavor and carbs .
I tried the Pork Cutlet with Cheese, and it did not disappoint. The cutlet was crispy, perfectly portioned, and not oily at all -- just the way it should be. The curry itself was a perfect balance of sweet and spice (we went with the standard level ) -- not overpowering, just comforting and flavorful. The curry sauce is more on the sweet side, compared to Coco Ichibanya, which has a more salty profile. Therefore, this might be a hit or miss depending on your preference. Loved that you can customize your rice & sauce size: * Small: 220g rice / 180g sauce * Medium: 300g rice / 250g sauce * Large: 450g rice / 350g sauce A hearty, satisfying meal that hits all the right notes.
Maji Curry is the kind of place that sounds impressive just from the name. I heard it won awards in Japan and was even called a national curry champion. I came with high expectations, hoping to taste authentic and rich Japanese curry. The restaurant is small but cozy and the moment I walked in I could smell the strong curry aroma, which made me hungry right away. I ordered their signature beef hamburger omelette curry. The food came out quickly and looked appealing. The omelette had a golden color and the curry sauce was thick and glossy. The beef hamburger looked solid on the side. The first bite was promising and I could tell the curry sauce was homemade and not from instant curry mix. The spice balance was good, and the sweetness of onions and vegetables blended nicely. The aroma was rich but not overwhelming. A spoonful of curry with the soft omelette rice was impressive at first. However, the problem became obvious quickly. Aside from the sauce, there was almost nothing with any real presence. The omelette was thin and the rice a bit dry. After a few bites it felt like all that was left in the bowl was the curry flavor. The hamburger, though it looked thick, was a bit crumbly and lacked juiciness. It did not have the firm texture you expect from beef. The exterior was a little dry and biting into it did not give that satisfying release of juices. Halfway through, the bowl felt like curry soup poured over plain rice. The flavor was strong and comforting, but the overall experience felt empty. The curry sauce is excellent and full of depth. You can tell it was made with time and care. Unfortunately, the rest of the dish did not match the sauce. The beef hamburger barely stood out and the omelette rice was dry, so toward the end it felt like the curry was the only thing keeping the dish together. The portion size is small and the price is not cheap. For what you pay, the overall satisfaction is not very high. If you are just looking to try the award-winning curry sauce, it is worth a visit. If you want a filling, satisfying meal, you might be disappointed. The service and atmosphere are good. The staff are polite and the food comes out quickly. The restaurant is clean and cozy. The tables are close together and it can get a little noisy when crowded, but the overall vibe is relaxed. After finishing the meal, I still remembered the aroma of the curry. It is truly delicious and distinctive. The problem is that the dish feels like something is missing. The sauce is the soul of Maji Curry, but the rest of the dish does not match it. If the omelette rice were softer and the hamburger patty more substantial, this curry would feel much closer to championship quality.
What I Ordered: Hamburger Steak Curry with Cheese ($17.80) Chicken Cutlet Curry ($14.50) Omlet Curry with Pork Cutlet + Fried Prawn + Beef ($26.25) Extra Curry ($3.25) Chicken and Fries ($4.95) Cream Pasta with Corn Soup Set ($11.25) Food: I was so excited to try this curry spot because they won the Japanese Curry Championship Competition multiple times. I tried the curry with multiple toppings, but I NEED to talk specifically about the curry sauce. The curry had a consistency that was thicker and a flavor that was much bolder than other Japanese curries. The level 2 spicy level had a small kick of spice but was honestly the perfect level of spiciness when mixed in and eaten with the rice. As for the toppings, my two favorites were the Pork Cutlet and the Beef. The pork cutlet was thick and full of meaty flavor, and I loved that it did not have any bad meat smell that is often found in bad quality meat. The breading was also incredible, which added the perfect amount of crunch with each bite. The beef was cooked perfectly, proven by its soft and tender texture. I ty[pically do not get beef as my curry topping, but this is the one place I would choose the beef (assuming that my fried gets the pork cutlet and we can share!) It was my first time experiencing such high quality toppings from a curry specialty restaurant. The Hamburger Steak, Chicken Cutlet, and Fried Prawn were good as well, but they weren't as memorable as the Pork Cutlet or Beef. The Cream Pasta with Corn Soup Set was surprisingly pretty good! I would say the pasta is a good dish to order if you don't like curry and your friends forced you to come here. The Corn Soup was quite decent too, a well balanced combination of sweet and savory. The Chicken and Fries came with their chicken karage and fries. A decent choice if you like chicken karage. Staff: The staff members were all nice and friendly. They checked in with me multiple times throughout my meal, making sure I was taken care of! Ambiance: Mainly inside seating with a few seats outside. There is a table top with a good number of seats and 4 tables across the restaurant.
I've come here twice with friends and can say that this is a pretty solid curry spot, especially when more popular places (like the one in DJ) are bound to be filled up in the evenings. It's also pleasantly nostalgic for me personally, as there used to be a Curry House on this block. The first time, I had the karaage curry. The second time, I again had the karaage curry but with the omelet add-on. Both times the portion amounts were just right (albeit a little bit more food than I can handle), and the flavor was pretty rich and delicious. One note is that I really recommend getting the standard spiciness if you're sensitive to spice (I find hot Cheetos spicy), and even then I could definitely feel the spice building over time. Overall, a nice and standard curry place with comparable prices - I wouldn't say it's my first choice just because I'm a Japanese curry enjoyer, but the servers are super nice and personable, and the restaurant also has nice dessert options nearby (Wanderlust creamery and Omomo), which makes this a good place to hangout with your friends too.
I very much enjoyed the Large Pork Cutlet Curry spice level 2. Next time I go I will get the next level up in spice since level 2 was relatively mild for my palate. The plate is pretty simple - scrambled eggs laid on top of a bed of rice with chopped deep fried pork cutlet on top surrounded by curry. I really liked this dish and like I said earlier would want an even more kick in spice level. Great job in service as well as our needs were catered to very well!
It was a quick in and out! Fast and considerate service- I don't know if they usually do this but we said we were going to share a XL pork cutlet and omelet curry between us two and server gave us a small extra curry sauce bowl on the side! Who doesn't like more curry sauce?! Loved the flavor! Only downside is that the pork cutlet was on the drier side which the extra sauce covered it up so you can barely tell. The place is very small so the ambience can be very quiet so if you're looking for that quick and quiet meal- go here!

My family and I (party of 4) went here last Thursday at around 5pm and luckily, there wasn't a long wait. I ordered Omelet Curry with Pork Cutlet in Regular. Portion is really good! I asked and L or XL only changes the portion of rice and curry, not the cutlet. I thought the egg would be thicker, but it was just a very thin layer of egg laid over rice. I don't think it's worth the extra $3 for a thin layer of egg. One of my family members ordered Cheese with their dish and I got to try some, and we both concluded that it had no taste and didn't affect the dish at all. The quality of the curry and pork cutlet, however, were phenomenal! The curry is slightly on a thicker side, which I like, and it seems like there are onions in there giving a sweet taste. All of us did Level 2, and it was the perfect level of spicy! The pork cutlet was sooo soft and very well fried. Yum! The service was good as well! Because the store isn't that big, the servers are quite attentive. It's also easy to call for their attention. In conclusion, no long wait if you go right before peak hours, don't order cheese or omelette, pork cutlet curry is amazing, go with level 2 spicy, service is good. :) read more

Really bad waitlist system plus poor service. This review is based on my experience on March 26 around 1:00 Pm served by Jarreth. Really rude and impolite staff. The other reviews are totally correct, the waitlist system is very inaccurate. When I put my name on the wait list at 11:30 Am it saids check in by 12:06 Pm. Upon arrival, I'm name is on the list being the 28th in line. I asked the staff when should I expect he said he doesn't know. There were two staff working. Waited for nearly 2 hours then I am the 2nd in line. I went in and Jarreth said what's my name and he said not yet. There are actually many empty table. 10 minutes later is my turn, and from 10 minutes ago those table empty are the same. So I'm not really understanding why you have to keep customer waiting when the same tables are actually empty?? Sat down, ordered food, when the server Jarreth put down the water. He placed it really hard, like do you really have to put water like this? No one greet us and no sympathy given people have been waiting at least 1.5- 2 hours to sit here. Ordered the hamburger steak curry, taste good is not very salty and flavorful. After we are finished he immediately collected the plate and make us pay. Didn't say thank you or anything. He asked if we are paying by card holding the Clover machine. I said yes and he want to take my card and I said oh I thought we just tap the card. He didn't say anything and just put down the machine and left. I find the whole interaction being super rude. Didn't say thank you or anything. I'm doubting maybe we shouldn't even pay tips since this is like a fast food restaurant. No service and super rude staff. No matter how good the food is, I probably will not be back. 4 stars. A solid curry spot with the classic done right. The shop is a little small so it could be hard to get seated right away but the wait is worth it. The curry is flavorful and the katsu is fried well. The portion size is solid and you can get an extremely filling meal without breaking the bank. The flavor of the curry is spot on, with a degree of savoriness and depth. The spice is adjustable so you can customize it to your liking. This establishment also has the option to add cheese to your curry, which is not something I opted for, but the novelty seemed interesting. I also ordered the chicken karage and I will admit that it was not worth the price. The portion size is very small for the price and it wasn't that good. The service was good, our food came out in a relatively fast manner, and our waiter was attentive. Overall, I would recommend checking this place out but don't get the karage. read more
FOOD 4/5 loved the consistency of the sauce and presentation with the light and fluffy egg beautifully on top! i got the level 5 spice and i felt like it was just right (so good, not too spicy). the only downside i would say is the portion for the pork- there was a lot of rice and curry, but not enough pork (the slices were kinda small too)- we had to get an extra portion of pork for the two of us! SERVICE 5/5 our server was super nice & attentive, he was pretty much the only one serving all the tables so it was nice that he could still check in on us frequently! there was barely a wait too compared to when i came when they first opened AMBIANCE 4/5 place was kinda small and tight but bright and clean at least! felt like everyone could hear each other's convos but at least they were blasting anime music the whole time to try to cover it up LOL! parking slightly hard directly in front of the resto since it's a busy plaza but the lot is big enough that you'll find one eventually! read more

Second photo is chicken cutlet I use to have when this store just opened, the first photo is pork cutlets I have for today. I really like Japanese curry, before here, I went to coco curry house a lot, then I come here many times as well since it opened. I understand pork cutlets is smaller than chicken cutlets, but I've never seen any pork in such small size. I use to work in restaurants, some pork cutlets they came in with this size from supplier, and the chef never use those to serve customers, even they do, they will serve one and half. I don't care if the owners try to save some cost or what, by doing such thing you just gonna lose your customers. read more

Gotta love the 5 star reviews from the people who only have... one Yelp review. MAJI isn't tipping the scales at all, no way. Lol. Anyway, this place is pretty trash. Tiny ass portions that are in no way reflective of the photos on the menu. See my pics for expectations vs reality. Not only that, but the food here feels lazily prepared. The hamburger patty tasted low grade and had no sear. The cheese was basically milk curd. The pork katsu had no crisp. The curry was really average. If you need a curry spot, hit up Coco Ichibanya. Hell, even Tokyo Central's cheap curry takeout boxes are better than anything here. Disappointing. The award this place flaunts must have been a participation award. read more

Been wanting to try this place since it opened and finally had the chance today. I was greeted as I walked in and was pointed to the counter to order a to go meal. Place is a bit small and loud but have nice wooden interior. I ordered the omelette curry with chicken katsu. It came out pretty fast and was happily surprised. But then thought that the food must be pre-cooked cause it came out in less than 5 minutes..hmmm...I was also beginning to sit myself inside to wait but was stopped and was asked to wait outside by the staff Serene. I just thought that was a bit rude since first, it took less than 5 mins to wait (which I am sure she knows) and there were a lot of empty tables/chairs to wait in. Next is the food. I found the curry sauce to be oily. I am not sure why it was oily. The curry taste is ok but does not linger in your mouth. I am thinking maybe it is because of its oiliness. Katsu was crispy and good. I was not happy with the egg also. I was expecting it to be moist and soft. It it was dry and overcooked. I was very disappointed. But overall the taste and meal is okay but I don't think I will be back considering how I was treated and the quality of food. read more

To be perfectly honest this spot was kind of a let down especially considering that it boasts award winning curry. Something just felt missing. This spot is very very small, accommodating around 16-17 people. The interior design was nice! Bright, modern, and simple. The service itself was good! There were 2 workers handling seating and service. Ill definitely give them props because they were getting rushed by people saying they were next on the waitlist! My group had a good experience with the yelp waitlist system despite it being a longer wait. We signed up a couple hours prior and were still able to do things while waiting. I would say definitely be ready nearby when you're near the top 5 of the list. The curry itself was okay. I wasn't wow'd or anything but I would say it is richer and a tad bit sweeter than Cocos. Spice level comes in levels 1,2, and 5. I personally thought the level 1 curry was spicier compared to other spots. My main gripe was the proportions of meat to rice and curry. Even though I ordered a large I still thought there was an excessive amount of curry compared to the other ingredients. By the time I was done I was basically eating rice swimming in curry. Overall, considering the wait time, I would say look for other places. But if you got the time, its worth a try. read more

They had questions about the portion and after waiting over an hour they got pretty hungry so tried the 2nd biggest portion. They finished it! my boyfriend & i came in around 6pm and were immediately sat! the interior is pretty small, not many tables, so i can understand why there's typically a long wait. now my bf loves coco ichibanya, but this was my first time ever having japanese curry so i was excited. our server was kind enough to take the time to explain the different spice levels they offer & his favorites. we eventually decided on their regular-sized Omelet Curries with Pork & Chicken. i wanna say i had a level 2-3, while he had a 1, though can't remember correctly. the cutlets were SUPER crispy, the egg was thin, & the curry was slightly sweet. the spice wasn't super noticeable. overall, it was okay - the highlight was the crispiness of the pork/chicken cutlets. Ordered the Omelet Curry with Pork Cutlet and it was delicious! The portion of the cutlet was great for the price and the omelet combined with the curry was very savory. The spice level was decent, and the pork cutlet was pretty tender. The place is a bit small, so it does get quite busy so go during less peak hours. The service was pretty good overall. Would come again to eat here with friends and catch up (just when it's not busy.) read more
I was a bit hesitant to try this place after reading mixed reviews, but decided to anyways. It IS an award winning Japanese curry so it can't be thattt bad. We got the large chicken cutlet curry and the regular pork cutlet curry with cheese, both with level 2 spicy (you have to pay extra beyond level 2). The food came out pretty quickly within 5 minutes. I liked the chicken more since it was crunchier, but both tasted fantastic. Level 2 spicy was the perfect amount of spiciness - not too little that you can't get that kick and not too much to make you go straight for the water. I would skip on the cheese since I didn't really taste it because the curry overpowered it. The large and extra large sizes only come with additional rice and curry and I also didn't notice a big difference between a regular and large. read more

Absolutely fantastic. We have been wanting to try maji for some time now, and we were not disappointed. There was no wait time when we arrived, but that might be different during the dinner rush. There is a tablet you can sign up for the waitlist outside. The inside of maji is a lot smaller than we expected but it can seat a good amount of people. The servers are all nice and friendly. We got the omelet curry with a side of veggies, chicken katsu, and cheese sauce. We got the curry at a level 2. Even then, it still had a nice kick to it. The curry itself was very flavorful and a little sweeter than other shops, but that is a bonus, in my opinion. It adds to the overall flavor of the curry. We had to order an extra side of curry because we didn't have enough on our plate. Maybe because we ordered so many sides. The chicken katsu was nice and crispy, and the veggies were very good. The inside of the restaurant isn't very spacious and there is limited seating, and even if there is a waitlist, it moves relatively quickly. Our waiter was very helpful and it was my first time so he explained the spice levels and even recommended what he thought was the best. However, the taste of the food was good, but it was not overly spectacular. I heard a lot of good reviews about this place and I came to check it out, and I agree that the curry has a richness to it, but overall, I think my expectations were too high. The portion sizing is decent, but my friends who have a bigger appetite than me cleared their plates and were not full. Even id you don't finish, they provide togo containers so you can take it home. read more
If I could I would do 3.5 but Yelp doesn't have that yet. This place is very nice as far as the ambiance goes, and the music is nice to listen to while you're waiting. Getting into the restaurant was a bit of a hassle since it was so busy and the building itself is kinda small, but I honestly don't mind it. Our server got to us pretty quickly and we were able to put our orders in within 10 mins of sitting down. I ordered the chicken cutlet curry with cheese fondu and honestly it was pretty good. My only complaint was that the cheese "sauce" was a whole lot more like cheese "water" lol. I wouldn't go so far as to say that it gives CoCo a run for it's money, but the flavor profile was very pleasant--a whole lot more subtle than CoCo as far as the spices go and the meat portions were a whole lot larger for a less expensive price. Because of the time we went in, there were a lot of bodies in the restaurant so it got pretty humid inside quick. It's a place I'd go back to, but not any time soon read more

Went there for lunch, and the wait was about 45 minutes. I was near by when I got the text message. The workers seemed surprised when I walked in to show that I received the text to be seated. I ordered their pork cutlet curry with cheese since it was labeled as a popular item. The pork cutlet curry was lightly fried, meat was super chewy. The cheese sauce was grainy and flavorless. The curry was okay, nothing special. Service was nonexistent besides taking your food order and delivering the food, they will just hand you the check in the end without asking if you needed anything else. Definitely not worth the wait. read more

Maji Curry just opened up a location in Irvine in the Walnut Village Center! They open up during lunch time, close, then open up again for dinner so check out their hours before visiting! I got their regular sized Omelet Curry with Pork Cutlet level 2 spicy, which was one of their recommended menu item. Level 2 spicy was like a mild to medium spice level. My friend got their large size and it looked pretty similar to mine, except a bigger omelet and rice. Their curry paired well with the rice, omelet, and katsu OFC. It tasted like what you'd expect from curry, but the star was the katsu in my opinion. Very crispy, juicy, and delicious. That's what I'm craving the next day, unfortunately not so much the curry. It was good, don't get me wrong, just not extraordinary. I came at 11:30 and there was already a 30 min wait to get in, so make sure to Yelp waitlist yourself! Overall, it was a pleasant experience and I'd come back again. read more

The curry here is seriously superior! We were going in sort of nervous because of the bad reviews when they first opened. The flavor was better than coco ichibanya for sure. We would definitely go here again instead. They did get our orders wrong at first, but gave us a free omelet to compensate. The katsu is delish of course, but we felt that our katsu was a little pale in comparison to the other plates we saw around us. I think the restaurant just needs to focus on consistency? But this review is 5 stars because of the curry itself! read more

Food was amazing! I ordered the pork cutlet curry with cheese, which was recommended to me by the server, and it tasted great. Even though their curry tend to be a little sweeter compared to the other curry restaurants, but that's what curry in Japan is suppose to be. It definitely feels authentic and reminds me of my time in Japan. The service was great especially the servers that works there. They were all very nice, friendly, and patience with explaining the menu as it was my first time Maji. 10/10 would come back again and definitely would recommend this place to friends and families. read more

The curry here is quite different from Coco. It's sweeter and thicker and overall pretty good. We ordered the pork cutlet with omelette rice. The pork chop is smaller but much juicer than Coco. The spice does build up as you eat so lv.2 was good enough for me as someone who likes a bit of a kick. read more

after trying coco ichibanya, i wasn't really into japanese curry, but after trying maji curry, i was really impressed! got the omelet chicken curry & the server said even w/ standard spice/no spice, there still is a little bit of spice to it. the curry was v filling & the chicken was so soft. waited 20 mins at around 5 p.m. on a saturday & they text you when your table is ready. there is limited indoor dining & plenty of parking. read more

We specifically stopped by Maji on our way to San Diego for the award winning curry and it did not disappoint!!! We tried both the Katsu curry with cheese and the hamburger omelet curry, both were so delicious! I recommend the spice level 2, the flavor is richer than standard. It's a small restaurant with less than 10 table. We arrived when it just opened so got a table without problem. It's quite popular that when we finish, it's already packed. I really wish they open another location in LA!!! read more

No. It is made with beef broth, per chef & manager on 3/17/23. Sad times :(
