It's quite a small restaurant and can probably seat 20ish people at most, which explains the long wait times. The service was quick and friendly. It had a semi-thick consistency but didn't have a lot of flavor compared to other Japanese curries I've had. MAJI Curry is a casual spot for Japanese curry, located in the shopping center with Stacks and Omomo. The store is pretty small with two rows of tables, so not great for groups. When I went for a weekday lunch, I was immediately seated. I tried the pork cutlet omelette curry with their cheese sauce at the standard level of spicy. Overall, the dish was ok. The pork katsu was nicely fried and tender, but the curry itself was bland compared to other spots' curry such as Coco Ichibanya or Misasa. The cheese sauce costs an extra $2.50 and tasted kinda creamy. I wouldn't say it was particularly cheesy nor did it have that gooey texture that melted cheese has. I'd say like 4 people max for comfortableness, definitely a tighter space. But they do have a yelp waitlist so sign up on your way and grab some boba. It wasn't too crowded in the afternoon. The staff is super efficient and kind of feel like Japanese service. Not much chatter, but will place you what you need, eat and get out. The regular portion is huge and for sure to give you a food coma, you could even share it amongst two people. The curry has a peppery spice and pairs really well with the sweet pickles. It is a little salty. The only thing is that the chicken I had was on the dryer side and I didn't feel like the cheese sauce added much richness/flavor. I tried Maji this past week for the first time and overall thought the place was solid but overhyped. We got there as soon as it opened to avoid the long wait I read about from other yelp reviews. We were seated immediately but the place was completely full after about 20 minutes. The interior is pretty small (as is the parking lot) but service was good as the workers were very nice and the food was ready quickly. For the food itself, we ordered the Chicken Cutlet Curry with Cheese and the Pork Cutlet Veggie Curry. I would recommend getting at least medium level spiciness as the mild option had absolutely no kick to it at all. The curry itself was fine but tasted a little less sweet and more "spice"-y than traditional Japanese curry - not a bad thing necessarily but I personally wasn't blown away. For the cutlet, I really liked the chicken cutlet as it was perfectly crispy on the outside and the meat itself was tender. How do I put this? Coco Ichibanya holds a special place in my heart (same with Curry House RIP), but Maji's dishes have a different level of quality. The karaage came out piping hot and fresh. The presentation was a little sad, but that was overshadowed by the crispiness and juiciness. I got the katsu curry with omelette in the lowest spice level. They definitely use more spices so their flavors are stronger and the sauce is sweeter. There was only 3 levels of spice and it jumps quite a bit. I loved the airiness in the pork katsu's crust, and they didn't overpack the rice inside the omelette (one of my pet peeves at Coco). The biggest con was how tiny the shop is. I think there was only like 6 parties that sat inside when we went. We were hoping to order an extra dish as takeout too but they told us they don't do takeout orders yet. I have been dying to try this curry spot when I heard all the hype about it. I was surprised there wasn't a wait but I am assuming it is because I came on a weekday. I love you can customize your curry order and they have a lot of other options as well. The server wasn't as attentive or welcoming but she was the only one working. COCO ICHIBANYA STILL WINS. Came here to Maji on a Sunday night in a party of 4 and it took us THREE HOURS even though the online wait list said 70 minutes. I read in another review to multiply your wait time if you're in a party of 4+ and I AGREE - MULTIPLY BY 2-3X. But the perk is that you can online waitlist from anywhere, not the usual within 2mi radius. In comparison to Coco's food though, this is MUCH SWEETER. There are only 3 levels of spice here - level 1, 2, or 5 - and level 5 tastes like a less than medium spicy. Their curry is flavorful but definitely wish it was spicier. The chicken cutlet, pork cutlet, and chicken karaage was very juicy. Omelette perfectly cooked. The cheese sauce is not worth the extra $3 though, super light with no taste and no satisfying cheese pull like Coco's - it doesn't add anything to your dish. Overall, service is a 2/5 and food is a 3.5/5. Food came out fast, but the wait time is ridiculous and false on the app and one worker gave us a stink eye for asking for a cup of ice since our water cups were lukewarm with none.. For the price, it would be nice for a salad or side dish, but otherwise, I was happy to be full. Spice- Spicy level 2 is not overly spicy, but provides a nice kick. It should be reasonable for anyone to eat it without being too spicy. Cheese- Would NOT recommend the cheese. Poured it over the rice + katsu, but couldn't taste it because the curry is really strong. Don't waste your money getting the cheese, and stick with a cutlet + curry. Maybe I did something wrong, but I couldn't taste it at all. Pork Cutlet- Crispy, and stayed crispy throughout the meal. Relatively thick cut of meat, and was not dry! I heard a lot of hype behind this curry restaurant so I wanted to try it! The Service: I went on a Saturday afternoon for lunch - around 12PM. There was a bit of a wait. They do use Yelp Waitlist - however, you have to go there in person to sign up (you cannot join on your phone prior). Service was quick and food came out pretty quickly. They were attentive and provided good service. The Food: Omelet Curry with Pork Cutlet and a side of Cheese Sauce - The pork cutlet was extremely crispy and went well with the curry and omelet. I ordered the regular size. From my understanding, L and XL size is just additional rice. I also added a side of the Cheese Sauce since that's what they seem to be known for. Cheese sauce was alright - I don't think it added much to the dish and the sauce was kind of grainy and not smooth. The curry is on the sweeter side with a bit of spice (standard spice). Cost: $15.50 ish for the curry + $2.50 for the cheese sauce. It definitely is a bit on the pricier side for the amount of food you get. I was definitely full after eating, but not stuffed/didn't bring home left overs. The Atmosphere: The restaurant is very tiny - there are probably 5-6 tables and then bar seating. Let's look on the positive side: the curry is great. The decor and location are excellent and really bring in the people. There are lines of people who want this type of food all day long. The demand is high. The product is good. The location is perfect. These are all the positive points to Maji Curry. The addition to an electronic waiting system on YELP is also a huge plus. The things that are not so great are: the long wait it takes to get this food. The limited seating makes it hard to find a seat. The workers work really hard and have impatient people demanding things from them.The restaurant can only seat around 25 at full capacity, with maybe two hundred on the waiting list. There is no option to order take out. This is limiting revenue for a restaurant that could make a lot more money if they allowed take out. The menu is very limited and the quality of the meats are not the best quality. Specifically, we found they have only two chicken options: cutlet or crispy. The quality of the meat is not the best. There were some fatty sections withboth the chicken and the beef. May I suggest expanding your menu to include more choices: stewed chicken, spicy fried chicken, and stewed beef. I was super stoked to hear about Maji Curry opening up in Irvine because this place claims to be "award winning." Sadly, it was a bit disappointing. First off, this place is very small. I showed up right at 11 a.m. when they opened on a Saturday and there was already a wait for a table. There are five small tables and six bar seats. The bar seats are super uncomfortable where there is a panel that keeps hitting your knees (I'm short and it still hits my knees). We were seated at the bard and I stood the entire time because it was very uncomfortable to sit. Food was okay, not great. I ordered the Omelet Curry with Pork Cutlet and Vegetables. The curry sauce was good, but I've had better. Their sauce wasn't unique and for Japanese curry, it was not much better from any other Japanese curry place. The Pork Cutlet was dry and small portion... I wasn't a fan. However, the batter was light and crispy! The vegetables were really good! Maji Curry definitely lives up to their *Award Winning Japanese Curry* reputation. They won the Kanda Curry Grand Prix in 2018 and 2022. They also win my vote as the best curry restaurant in Irvine. Opening up by Jamba Juice, in the same area where Curry House used to be, they are a quaint little restaurant with 5 small tables and a tall counter along the wall with 5 high chairs. Currently they are still new so they put a sign on their door that says NO TO GO ORDERS. I hope that changes soon because they have such a limited interior space and that really effects revenue and my ability to get some delicious curry if they're busy. Their menu is really simple. You can create your own curry plate or you can pick one of the suggested picks. I knew exactly what I wanted so I ordered a regular size Omelet Curry with Pork Cutlet ($15.54) with my curry standard spicy. I picked the regular size because the larger portions give you more rice and curry, but the same amount of protein. I need to eat my carbs sparingly. One thing I also notice is that their toppings options are a lot less compared to other places. That can be a good thing if they are solid at their specialty, but I really like potato croquettes with my curry and they did not have it. Service was friendly and quick-enough during a busy lunch rush. My food arrived in a timely manner piping hot and fresh. There was a good amount of curry and I love the thick gravy-ness of the curry. It coated the rice and accompaniments without soaking through. The pork cutlet was tasty and soft. The breading didn't stick well to the pork but I didn't mind. There was some community pickled veggies on the ledge. I like that you can get as much or as little as you want. I really like the pickled veggies with my curry so I got a lot. Friends have told me when they first opened the curry was a step above but when I went after the crowds calmed down, it didn't taste much different from CoCo in Diamond Jamboree or Curry House (RIP). The regular serving is decent for the price since it's very filling. The Large and XL just came with more sauce and rice. Unlike CoCo they don't offer brown rice as an alternative. I recommend the omelette rice with pork katsu if you do go. Katsu is okay but definitely eat it quick before it gets soggy. Level 2 spicy is definitely medium with a kick to it. Like the new white washed Sriracha flavor. To be honest, it wasn't much different from box instant curry so I wouldn't wait in line. Every since Curry House closed it's doors a few years ago (ironically there was a Curry House in the same center two doors down), I've been searching for a good Japanese curry spot. I found Maddie's Cafe & Grill in Garden Grove, which had a perfect brown curry with chicken katsu, but they recently revamped their menu and had to take it off. Kagura opened in Costa Mesa (saving me a trip to the South Bay) and they have luscious, thick panko covered patties of meat and their curry is not bad, but the katsu is the strength there. Enter Maji. I came on a rainy Saturday and the restaurant was full but there was no wait. Please note, the dining room is tiny and probably cannot seat parties larger than four people. Once people find out about Maji, I imagine there will be a wait. The servers were prompt to answer any questions and take my order. What do they have? Curry! And you can customize it! There are no veggie pieces in their curry sauce, no bits of carrots or chunks of potatoes, you need to order those extra vegetables if you want that. The heat seemed very mild at first but then halfway through the dish I could feel the spiciness accumulating with a nice little burn. It's a tad sweeter than most other curry places, but that's not a bad thing. I loved their sauce. The cutlet was a thick cut of tender pork that cut through easily when I applied my knife. Moist inside, panko crusted on the outside. It was evenly fried and the breading was even and crisp all the way around. Their pickled jar contains slices of onions, radish and zuccini. I mixed it in with each bite and it pairs nicely with the curry and offsets some of the spiciness. I was so satisfied with my meal! My search for a new regular Japanese curry spot in Orange County is over. Maji is it. An even more pleasant surprise was that they gave a 20% discount on the bill for coming in during the grand opening week. Maji Curry boasts award-winning Japanese curry with a simple menu of popular proteins, curry, and a handful of toppings (including a melted, creamy cheese to pour over your curry). So, of course, I was curious: does it hold up? The answer is mostly yes. The curry itself is a bit spicy, even at the mild level, and is a thicker consistency compared to the usual Japanese curry. The flavor of the curry sauce is dark and rich, and the rice was cooked perfectly. The accompanying pickles also tasted like they were freshly made and were a delicious addition to the curry. The Lows: The Hamburg Curry with Cheese did not meet the hype for me, primarily because the Hamburg was not soft or delicate as most Hamburg in Japan would be. Perhaps more to American taste - they served a well-done patty. When I asked if they could cook the beef medium rare, to my surprise, the server let me know that they would not be able to adjust the cook. The cheese sauce was pretty good on its own but gets lost in the rich curry sauce. For this reason, I would not recommend adding the cheese if you're being calorie-conscious. The Highs: the Pork Cutlet Curry! The cutlet was thick, juicy, and delicious, and the cook of the meat was great. The Vegetables (which can act as its own curry or a side) and the Eggplant are both also great. Tenderly cooked and well-seasoned stars. The service pacing was decent and the servers were pretty friendly, but the restaurant is far too small for the potential demand of curry lovers. The interior has seating for maybe 7-8 small parties (mostly for parties of 2), and on the night we visited, a large party took up half the restaurant so it took over an hour for a seat for 3 folks. The servers here are pretty efficient as well. I ordered a omelette pork cutlet, my bf ordered the cheese pork cutlet, and we shared a order of kaarage. The kaarage was the most disappointing of them all. They just looked like big chunks of chicken nuggets that you can prepare at home lol. The presentation of this dish made it look very skimpy and sad, but the kaarage itself was just okay. It was a bit dry and could have been better. Moving on to the "award winning curry". Between the cheese and the omelette curry, the omelette one is better in my opinion! The cheese doesn't really taste like anything so it feels like it's just there for presentation. If it was actually cheesy, that would be amazing, but it was just so liquidy. The omelette was pretty thin, but I enjoyed how runny it tasted. We got our curries also level 2 spicy and it was actually a good amount of kick for me. My spicy tolerance is pretty low so this was pretty spicy for me tbh lol. My bf said level 2 was not spicy enough, which if someone like you enjoys mala, maybe try level 5! The curry flavor itself was actually pretty nice. I would say curry itself is the most tastiest. ALTHOUGH, the cutlet itself was a bit lacking. The pork was a bit tough and the skin easily separates from each other. I also liked how they just have a jar of radishes. I actually enjoyed that with the curry the most cause it gives new crunchy texture adding onto the curry dish. This actually made me enjoy it a little bit more. Overall, it's not worth a 1.5hr wait. I came to Maji curry with some friends for Saturday lunch. It is located in a very crowded plaza with terrible parking. It took me a while to find a spot. While that doesn't really add to the quality of the restaurant, I just wanna warn everyone coming in to be early. Onto the restaurant. It's a very small restaurant so the wait time was a little long. For a party of 3, we waited 45 minutes. When we were seated we ordered the pork, chicken, and hamburger steak cheese curry. My friends and I love Japanese curry and this was not bad! I would rank it slightly higher than Coco another oc japanese curry place, but it isn't outstanding. The cheese didn't add too much flavor to the overall curry. Came 10 minutes before their opening time, and there was already a line of people waiting. The space is rather small, with five 2-person tables, one 4-person table, and 6 seats at the counter. There are some tables outside but no one was utilizing them. They are currently not allowing to-go orders, but I asked if we could order and box it ourselves and that is allowed, which is more inconvenient for them as they need to wash an extra dish? We ordered the chicken cutlet curry and omelet curry with pork cutlet, along with the hamburger steak curry rice with cheese to take out (but was still brought out as a dine-in order). The omelet was really nice and fluffy, my favorite part about the dish. The standard level of spice already had a kick and was enough for me. The pork cutlet was crispy but by itself without the curry, the meat was slightly dry. There are also marinated pickles placed at each table to add as you please. Make sure to examine your check, because we got the correct receipt for our table but when we paid using the Toast handheld machine, the wrong amount was charged -- for some reason, an additional curry dish that we didn't order was added to the check. Luckily, we caught it right away and let them know, and they voided it / recharged us. We ordered the Beef curry and the Omelet Curry with Pork Cutlet. Beef curry: flavor was good just wished there was more meat especially with the upgraded large order. There's plenty of parking at night after the bank closes. However, you could have a long wait time too. They have a waitlist when you get there. I didn't notice anything on the app to sign up before getting there. As soon as you enter the restaurant you will be hit by the aroma of curry. The menu is easy to follow and service is quick. The portions are pretty big, they are very generous with the curry. The cheese sauce is pretty runny, I couldn't really taste the difference with or without cheese. Loved the pork katsu! read more

Really good curry! I don't typically eat curry at restaurants because it's usually not good and the one you make at home tastes a lot better but this place is really really good. Lots of various curry to choose from, you can customize size and spicy level. I got the vegetable and pork cutlet curry with level spicy and it tasted really good. Level 5 spice was $1 more but it's somewhat spicy. I eat really spicy food so it wasn't that spicy. Interior is clean but a bit small. Big big downside was the chairs along the window bar is so small. Like 10-12 inches wide. It was uncomfortable to sit in. Highly recommend this place and there's Omomo in the same plaza so worth coming here from Torrance. read more

I finally saw this spot open and wanted to try the curry out. There was a long wait before getting seated, about 30 minutes. The shop is pretty small inside, but they do have a few tables outside. They were pretty busy and the server asked if I mind sharing a table with another party. I didn't mind so I ended up sharing a table with the other party. I ordered the omelette curry with pork katsu (large) and chicken karaage as appetizer. It took awhile for the food to come out but the chicken karaage came out first. It was about 6 pieces of chicken with some mayo sauce. The curry came shortly after and the portion was huge. For a large, it could be shared between two people. The curry tasted okay, it had more of a sweet taste. The omelette and pork katsu was cooked perfectly and pretty decent. Honestly, I'd go between 3.5-4 stars. The curry here is really good. Up until now, my boyfriend and I have only gone to Coco Ichibanya and thought it was good but damn, Maji blows it out of the water. The curry is super flavorful and as someone who doesn't really like spicy, I was surprised with how even their standard was very doable for me! Just the perfect amount of spicy for me. I got the regular omelet curry with chicken cutlet and everything came out super yummy. Portion is huge. My boyfriend did a build your own with spice level two and he also enjoyed his as well. He prefers the pork cutlet here as the batter they use for the chicken and pork are different. Now, why it wasn't a 5 star (as bad as I wanted to give it for the food alone): the service. I'd like to think I don't ask for much when it comes to service, but it was a little annoying that two parties who came after us got their orders in first. The food took about 30 minutes to come out. In addition, we weren't really checked on until the very end when I had like two bites left. I don't ask that they hover, but I had to look around for someone just to get the check. Maybe I'm just used to servers just leaving it there when they see us close to finishing, but that just shows how overlooked we were. It's also a fairly small place. A few tables and a counter. We were sat on the counter next to a family whose kids were playing and was getting into my personal space (kid literally ended up knocking into me) and the parents weren't doing anything so. Not the fault of the restaurant at all, but just made the experience not as great since I was more worried about the kid knocking into my plate. Was excited to try out a new curry place in town! We got there on a Tuesday night and unsurprisingly, there was lots of people waiting outside to get a table, which was a good sign! It took us an hour, from when we first put our name on the wait list to get in. We ordered Karaage as an appetizer and the Extra Large Curry with Chicken Katsu and added Cheese Sauce, with a Tonkatsu on the side (unpictured). The karaage was great! Nice and juicy, flavorful dark meat and especially great dipped into mayo. The Extra Large Curry was enough to split for two people. The curry itself had a good flavor, not too spicy on Level 2 and a hint of sweetness. The chicken katsu and the tonkatsu were very crispy, although I did perfer the tonkatsu and thought it was a bit more tender and enjoyable than the chicken. Unfortunately, the curry was not as hot, temperature-wise and spicy-wise, as we would've expected, otherwise we would've enjoyed more. Seeing all the hype surrounding the opening of a new Japanese curry restaurant in south OC, we were excited to see if the monopoly could be broken from "that" other restaurant. In short, the experience was quite average. The restaurant is very small and lots of people were waiting on a Thursday night at 5:30, so our wait was an hour. Their saving grace is that the cooks are FAST. We ordered and got our food in less than 5 minutes. The curry isn't blended, so the grated vegetables are visible in the curry. That's not good or bad, just a characteristic that needed to be mentioned. The omelette wasn't seasoned much, and the cheese sauce is bland so it's much more likely a gimmick for social media. The cutlet was great, however.
