The one star is simply for the guy who takes the orders. He needs to be fired. He literally told potential customers "F you" as they left- in front of me as I was eating. They sat at the bar not knowing to order at the register. He could have easily said "you all need to order here" but didn't. Outrageously bad. I was thinking before that happened that the guy is not friendly. And then the cursing at customers happened. Your establishment will not last with that BS going on. The second stop on our Tour de Krog Street Market (first was Gu's Dumplings), which added some freshness and seafood to our meal that we were craving from the hot weather. We got a specialty roll, and a side of kimchi, with some miso soup. The roll was my favorite, slightly more thinly sliced than some sushi, but the flavors were there and nicely presented. The wasabi was oddly more neon green but still tasted ok. The kimchi was a bit plain, with no other vegetables than the cabbage (like carrot, onion, green onion) and seemed to be more of the stem pieces than leaves; not the best part. The miso was good, not too salty or watery. We'd probably come here again and try some more sushi, and maybe other sides as well. read more

This is absolutely my go to spot every time I'm at Krog's. It was maybe about after my 4th visit at Makimono when I found out that the restaurant actually extends further behind the sushi bar, which is the cool fact that many people don't know about. There's a door on the left side of the bar that you can enter in to the restaurant, and you wouldn't believe this cute cozy place is actually a 2-story restaurant with a sweet little attic/upstairs seatings! The menu has changed with the new management, and now Makimono offers a lot more than just sushi rolls. They have added tons of Korean dishes, which is SUPER EXCITING bc now that means I don't have to drive 40 min plus to Duluth to get quality korean food anymore! Before getting to food, let me just say their flavored margaritas are the BOMB. I've tried both strawberry marg and watermelon marg (only $5.50 each - say whaaaat) and now I'm hooked. You can even get the margaritas "to-go" if you want to walk around the Krog's market with your drink. Idk whether the watermelon margarita is a seasonal item or not, but you must get it if you're at Krog's!! Food. Their sushi never disappoint. I've pretty much tried almost all of their special rolls and they're all so delicious. Obviously the sushi is the main event, but their other entrees are top-notch as well. I've tried their bento box and bibimbop, which are highly recommended if you're feeling adventurous beyond sushi. I love all the servers and everyone at Makimono - they're super friendly and make sure you are taken care of and satisfied! The cashier was Very unethical to me. I'm pretty sure that the cashier was racist. I'm not sure if he was slightly annoyed before clocking in but I was the first customer of the day. I greeted him. He responded yeah, what can I get for you? I told him my order and handed him my payment. He then sat my change on the counter and started to laugh and speak Spanish to the cooks. He greeted the next patron "aaaah my first customers of the day! Happy to see you. How can I help you?" I stepped to the side and watched him greet other patrons (not of my race) with politeness and place their change into their hands. I won't be back unfortunately. read more

Located in the Krog Street Market, Makimono is definitely a must-go for everyone who is a fan of Japanese cuisine. My parents and I ate here as dine-in. I had the udon, while my parents ordered the bento box. We all really enjoyed the food. The service here is very attentive and food was made to order very quickly, which was also impressive considering how long the take-out line was. The interior design was very Japanese-like keeping the dynamic consistent. They have a good selections of Japanese beers, which go very well with the dishes that they serve here. I would give this place an easy five, but like so many locations they seem to be hit hard by Covid staffing problems. The nice gentleman who instructed us to seat ourselves seemed to be working the entire back section on his own. Taking our order took some time. After the order was put in, our food came out quickly. The beef bulgogi in a stone pot was absolutely delicious and the portions were so large. The takoyaki was equally delicious, covered in a sweet sauce and bursting with chewy octopus and sweet batter on the inside. RIP Craft Izakaya. Welcome, Makimono. Chef/owner Jey Oh decided to close Craft Izakaya (opened August 2014, closed January 2017) and open a new fast-casual, "Chipotle-style" sushi joint in its place at Krog Street Market. Makimono opened January 2017. In Japanese, the word "makimono" refers to a variety of sushi rolls and that's exactly what this place serves along with bowls. I'm sad to see Craft and its well-rounded izakaya menu and sit-down service go. Like fellow tenants such as Gu's Dumplings and Suzy Siu's Baos, Chef Oh has turned his business into a counter service stall with an easy, streamlined menu specializing in much fewer items. I think I know what some of you may be thinking because I thought the same thing -- that Craft has been downgraded to food court sushi or fast food sushi. While this is true to a certain extent, Chef Oh and Chef Hugo still run the sushi bar and the rolls are high quality, filling, and delicious. Not only that, but the rolls are served fast (thanks to a partially automated machine process) and are a good value. One thick, giant roll (10 pieces) is $9.95. All bowls are $9.95 each as well. Rolls are prepared by sushi chefs at the sushi bar, which now faces the inside of Krog Street Market. The flattening of the sushi rice and the cutting of the rolls is now automated by machines, but the rest of the preparation is still done by hand. That includes ingredient placement and the rolling itself. I'm a sushi purist and almost always order nigiri as opposed to rolls. However, I have to admit I found the rolls here to be pretty good. The ingredients are fresh and flavorful and the quality of the rolls themselves, from the rice to the fish to the preparation, are much better than run-of-the-mill sushi joints. I ordered the Lion King and Ellie rolls and found every bite of both to be quite delicious. Ellie is the name of Chef Oh's daughter, so that's how the roll got its name. We also got an Island roll to go and our friend loved it. Whether dining in or out, all rolls are served in clear plastic containers with wasabi, pickled ginger, and a small plastic cup of soy sauce. The rolls are so big that they are hard to dip into the soy sauce cups. Bigger soy sauce cups would be good. I also tried a pork cutlet bowl. This is tonkatsu or Japanese deep-fried pork over white rice with veggies such as pickled daikon, carrots, and crunchy cabbage. Like the rolls, the bowl was filling. It was dense and heavy, mostly from all the rice. The tonkatsu wasn't breaded nor fried on the spot (I believe they have batches already prepared), but the bowl was assembled to order. It wasn't as good as the freshly made tonkatsu I've had at sit-down restaurants, but it was crispy and tasty enough. Temper your expectations because it's pre-made, quick-serve tonkatsu. Like the rolls, bowls are served in sturdy disposable containers. The setup is kind of weird. The dining room of Craft has been converted into general seating for the entire market. The old sushi bar of Craft is now Makimono's cocktail bar. The bar manager, Peter, serves some amazing and creative drinks including traditional sake. It seems to be an odd pairing, fast-casual sushi and high-end cocktails, though during our visit, we saw several folks swing by for either one or the other and not necessarily both. Service is excellent. Chef Jey, Hugo, David (general manager), Peter, and the rest of the crew are great. Krog Street Market offers valet and free self-parking (limited number of spots). I normally parallel park along nearby neighborhood streets like Waddell or Dixie and walk over. TL;DR - For fast, casual sushi rolls, Makimono delivers. Makimono have been on my list to try for a long time but it seems that every time I wanted to visit, it didn't happen. Well I finally had a chance to go here couple of weeks ago and I am glad I finally got to taste their sushi. We order the following: -Build your own roll -Fish Cake Soup -Wonton Shumai My friend liked the shu mai, but it could have been more flavorful. My built my own sushi had salmon, eggs, avocado and fried garlic on top. It was really good. The fish cake soup was very lackluster, I do not recommend it. The food at this place is amazing! The sushi is the best for sure. We got the island, the crunchy shrimp and the lambada! Miso soup was hot and fresh. The service was the only reason for 4 stars, they only had ONE server on a Saturday night in the dining area. Visited for the first time on Monday around 8pm. This place is inside of Krog Street Market. Parking can be a little difficult, but I circled the lots twice and found someone leaving. For a Monday the market was definitely busy! I can only imagine how crowded it would be on the weekend. Luckily they were still open late and ordered and grabbed 2 seats at the bar right there. I ordered the Lambada roll (Spicy tuna, salmon, avocado, cucumber topped with spicy mayo, masago, eel sauce, green onion & sesame seed -$14). Super super delicious roll! Please keep in mind there are only a few Asian cuisine places in the market. This is the only sushi joint. On a Friday night while there were a ton of people elsewhere we manage to get seated and get a table here for 3 people. Looked fairly new? Maybe a year or so... But with the good reviews we saw we decided to check it out. We got the stone bimbimbop which is nicely displayed but I felt we didn't get a much. Compared to the traditional bowl, it's more flat then deep like a bowl. It was good but was just okay. We had the lion king roll which i thought was pretty good. Our server recommended it. Our sever also recommended the popular dish of the kimchi korean pancake. She really hyped it up but then forgot to put the order so we never got it and I think she just completely missed it. It was getting late so we decided not to bring it up. The soups were good. We had the pork dumpling and udon noodle soup. I told her I don't eat pork to begin with so when I saw pork dumplings in my udon noodle soup I was kinda bummed she didn't tell me beforehand. Hot sake (they only had one kind) was also okay.. nothing fancy or exciting. Server was super nice and staff were great. It was a little weird we got our soups last but that's just a minor personal preference for me. Checked out this place (Makimono)based on a recommendation from the group. I got the Babees signature roll and the beef fried rice. I also got a mango margarita from Bar Mercado. I did notice afterwards that Makimono had a $5 margarita special. My food was good. I would definitely come back. This location was perfect because I could walk the beltline after eating. I'm a very big fan of Makimono! I've always done the walk-up stall, and am very impressed for the rolls that are both on the menu and from when I can build my own roll. The ratios of sushi really speak to me - they are jam packed in the middle with a lighter layer of rice on the outside. I love that you can get more than one protein. The build your own gives you room to be creative and change it up. It used to be unlimited toppings, but I believe they just limited to 3 or so in each other category (which i think is broken down like so: 2 proteins, 2 inside fillings, 3 sauces, 3 toppings) before you start getting charged extra. The build your own clocks in at just under $16, which is maybe a little high for 1 roll, but it is always super filling and a very high quality roll. I'd definitely rank their rolls in the same tier as other higher-end but still casual Japanese restaurants in Atlanta (like O-ku, etc). I've never sat on the inside because I think they have tough competition with the other sit downs in Krog. read more

Ok I've ordered takeout from here about a million times but recently had the opportunity to dine in! First things first, my favorite roll is the Lion King - salmon, avocado, crab salad, parmesan sauce, eel sauce and it's BAKED. OMG. It's delicious and so saucy (if that's your thing). My husband gets the Ellie with tuna, salmon, avocado, fried shallots and ponzu sauce. And if we're feeling EXTRA, we're usually between the Lambada or Philly as our third roll. Alternatively, you can create your own too which is such a fun option. You're guaranteed 10 pieces regardless of which way you go. Other great options are their bibimbaps which are large enough to split between two people and maybe add an appetizer (say, edamame or miso soup). This dish comes out really hot so please be careful when you're eating it! Service is great, we got seated pretty quickly and our server came to greet us right away. Service when ordering from the counter for takeout is also seamless. You can't go wrong at Makimono! read more

Rating this restaurant is extremely difficult. I wanna say 3.5 They have some of the best sushi I've had in a while but the experience was so strange. My friend and I were torn between going here. We heard it was good so we chose the restaurant but when we arrived it was dead, and I mean dead. Not a single person inside. This was a Friday around 6PM and every other restaurant was packed. A little off putting to begin with. Location. Krog Street Market next to the taco bar. Easy to find. It's the first restaurant when you enter. Parking. Paid parking using park mobile directly across the street. Ambiance. Confusing? There was anime playing on the TV and ratchet trap music playing. Not that the choice of music was bad, a don't have an issue with it but it was weird for the decor and definitely didn't fit the anime and newspapers hanging on the walls. It was really clean inside which was a bonus and the decor was pretty chic but things just didn't seem to match. Drinks. One of my all time biggest pet peeves is when I get my meal before I get my drinks. We were a little unsure what to order and the bar tender was not really helpful. I understand going to a bar and being ready with your order and not asking questions when they're busy but when there is not a single person in the venue. Seems like you would want to be friendly. Apparently not. Food. They are still new so they didn't have a full menu but their sushi was phenomenal. As the place grows things may be different so don't discount this place from trying it. The lambada roll was so good! Service. The hostess was an adorable friendly woman. She was very friendly when she seated us. Great start! The server was sweet. A little inattentive which was shocking since no one else was there. We let her know when we arrived that we had a little less than an hour so we expected he to check in a little more often so we could get our order and check in a timely fashion. LOVE this spot for sushi to-go! Super easy to order on the phone and it's ready in 10-15 min. All the rolls are packed with flavor and deliciousness. I'm a particular fan of the lambada, lion king, and ellie rolls! I do sometimes wish there were a couple more salmon-centered rolls. Keep in mind that Makimoni is inside Krog Street Market, which can get CROWDED on the weekends. If they're limiting the number of people who can be inside (as they often do during peak hours), then you will also have to wait in line to get inside even though you're just picking up food to go. read more

this was my first time here and it was AMAZING. we sat on the bar area (as it's the only part of the establishment open during the week--the back restaurant is open on the weekend after 4pm) i ordered the salmon (sake) nigiri, the rainbow roll, and the calamari. the fish tasted so fresh and they made the sushi in front of you. the calamari was okay but the breading was a little thick. everything else in the photos was really good as well! they also have $3 shots of tequila and $5 margaritas. it was a great first time here & i cant wait to come back!! read more

Compared to other chirashi bowls I've had, this one came with only 4 types of fish (salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and another white fish maybe white tuna, wasn't sure), but the portion of each fish was generous (3-4 plump pieces) and fresh. There was also some seaweed salad and masago. Initially I was disappointed at the lack of variety which is what I get chirashi for usually, but it ended up being pretty filling and satisfied my sashimi craving. read more
