I really liked this place! DIY Sushi was so fun to make and turned out surprisingly well! You get to check off all of the ingredients you want for a personalized roll! I think that's pretty much the only novelty here as the rolls are machine rolled and not by hand. That being said, it was overall an enjoyable experience and I loved my finished product! Love this place! I've been here twice and really enjoyed both times. The first time I got the chicken teriyaki bowl for $13.95. It was delicious and the perfect portion! The second time I got the lion king sushi roll. It was AMAZING. The best sushi I've ever had, seriously. It comes with 10 rolls for $9.95. Can't beat that price. It's located inside Krog Street Market. It's nice because you can sit inside the restaurant or order from the bar and take it over to the Hop City area and grab a drink/eat. Today I was treated to an experience and genuine greatness of culture and taste. This combination of Korean and Japanese palate combos was unique and yet so beautifully delicious. For starters I ordered the corn cheese which is a classic Korean side dish. This corn cheese was very unique, o have never had one with crab stick and it added a sweet but savory taste. The cheese was perfectly soft yet had a grilled flavor. Me and my partner shared the Island and Ellie roll. The tinge of lemon and spicy tuna on the Island roll was a nice touch to a classic sushi roll. The Ellie was my favorite. The nice flavor of the fish comes out perfectly and it was nicely accented by the avocado and scallion. 10/10 read more

The only reason this review isn't 5 stars is because they were out of an item on their menu, which could have been sourced from the store 20 yards down the hall--the popular recognizable beer on their otherwise mostly Japanese list. I frequent KSM often, very often, and always wondered about this place. The first time I visited, they were sold out of their "very popular" Japanese beef bowl, so I ordered a roll. I forget which one, because it wasn't very memorable. For $10/roll, at KSM, I guess I expected more. A few months later, I'm back at KSM and wander over to Makimono. This time, they aren't sold out of their beef bowl, so I order it. And it's basically $10 for white rice with overcooked beef and some cabbage and picked radish as toppings. The rice was old and clumpy. The "Japanese" beef is actually uncannily similar to bulgogi beef, so yeah... I also ordered edamame, which was the best part of the meal, because that's something you can't really go wrong with. read more

Makimono is what replaced Craft Izakaya in Krog Market. I believe it's owned by the same people. They have changed the concept to fit most of the other food stands inside the market. There is a small menu of suhsi rolls (10 pieces per roll), custom rolls (use the menu on the bar), and hot rice bowls with protein. All are $10 ($9.95 really). You can either walk up and order from the left side of the sushi bar or sit and order from the sushi bar. The restaurant part is now communal dining space for anyone ordering from food stalls at the market. There are tvs on the wall to watch sports ball :) and you can order from a full bar. I order the lambada roll which had spicy tuna, salmon, and avocado and was topped with eel sauce, spicy mayo, and roe. It was good, but there was too much sauce on it for my tastes. I'm a light to no sauce person so my experience might not be the same as yours. I was full after most of a roll and a small container of hot and sour soup I picked up at Gu's. Next time I think I will create my own roll so that I can get very little sauce on top. The fish did taste fresh though. I think Makimono will do well at Krog. As long as they can make the rolls/ bowls quickly they will probably get way more business than the sit down restaurant that Craft was. *I would love it if they would put some version of that spicy avocado ball on the menu, but I highly doubt it will happen. Still... if the owners are reading this, I think you could add an easy version next to your edamame for one more appetizer. read more

I was disappointed to hear that Craft Izakaya is gone, but Makimono is a decent replacement. The menu is much more streamlined than the traditional izakaya menu, and it's located in the same place Craft was. Normally, I am a sushi snob and generally only go for sashimi or nigiri, but the roll-centric concept works for Makimono because they use high quality ingredients. The fish seems fresh, and the flavors are better than your average sushi joint. Not to mention that the rolls are gigantic -- and that's what you'd expect for $12 a pop. Since they're located in the Krog Street Market, everything is served in a plastic container. They provide wasabi, ginger, and soy as well, so you don't have to scramble to find it. Even when the Market is packed, they move quickly and efficiently -- and politely! The cashier was very nice and helpful with her suggestions. I tried the Island and I particularly loved the zip that the lemon added to the roll. Tried the Ellie on my second visit, and preferred the Island. read more

I only got the sashimi, and it was great mostly because of the size of the pieces. The quality of fish is good. Not excellent, but good, and the price is definitely fair! I also got the lychee martini and it was delicious. The rolls on the menu were about 75% shrimp tempura rolls, so this spot is NOT traditional sushi. I'd probably give it a lower rating if portions were smaller but the value adds a full star. Service is also attentive and friendly. read more

We had pretty low expectations going into a sushi place in the type of setting that is Krog Street market. It's as much of a takeout place as it is a restaurant. But I have to say, it was quite good. The roles were quite large and extremely well put together. My wife is not a big fan of raw fish and they were able to substitute the tuna with extra crabmeat. My two rolls were very large and very flavorful. You have the opportunity to pick from about 10 selections on their menu or put together whatever you want. We will definitely try to again. The only thing I would recommend is to have their seaweed steamed somewhat as it was a little tougher to chew than expected. Otherwise it's quite good sushi. read more

I work down the street from Krog, and my coworkers and I LOVE Makimono's sushi. We eat it literally 2x a week, sometimes more. We've gotten other things besides sushi several times and have always been super satisfied. Last week, we had a completely different and horrible experience and unfortunately will not be returning for a while. We ordered sushi rolls and yaki soba noodles. I ate my sushi roll first, it was sooo delicious. I then started eating my noodles, to which I find a very long, black hair. I honestly was so hungry, I chose to shrug it off, stuff happens! Sadly, I found not one, not two, but THREE other hairs in my noodles. I ended up calling to complain, to which the person on the phone tells me, "Oh that's not hair that's just the noodles." ................ Then, they made me bring back my food in order to get a refund. I was so frustrated but I went back up there anyway. Then, they acted like they couldn't find my check and when I didn't have my receipt on hand, they told me they couldn't refund me without the receipt, even though I had the card I used to pay. I ended up having to call back to my job and have my coworkers dig through the trash to get the receipt. Then, they ended up giving me my refund in cash anyways. I've never ever had an experience like this, at any restaurant. It was so unprofessional. My coworkers and I decided we won't be ordering from them for a long time. read more

My friend ordered a roll and a seaweed salad and the seaweed salad was drenched. I don't know why it was so watery, aside from that the flavor was good. You can build your own roll or choose from some of the options provided. I went with their Island roll and my friend got the Pink Lady. Both were incredible! The rolls have a unique and original taste that's different from other sushi places I've been to. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were very polite and great conversationalists. We went on Saturday August 15 and sat at the bar. We spent about 50 bucks but the Asian lady at the cash register would not give us a cup of tap water. We had to purchase an overpriced bottle. Then she seemed hesitant to give us a plastic cup so we could share it. The sushi makers were right infront of us having a very livelyconversation. One had a mask covering his mouth but not his nose. The otherguy wire no mask AT ALL. In the midst of our meal, some white guys satat the other end of the bar and I noticed he was wearing a mask. Food was just okay. Sooo, they're open from 11:30am - 9pm/10pm daily but they don't open the full serve menu till 6pm (I think) and the alcohol sells doesn't open till 5pm. That would have drastically changed my ideas about eating here while we planned out our night since we started at 4pm. Only the sushi bar was open with limited menu options, mostly sushi rolls and I believe bowls. I ordered the Ellie roll which they give to you in a to go sushi container like you get at the grocery. To begin with, sushi rolls aren't typically what I would order, I like sashimi but I needed something a little heavier (which if the full menu was open...). The roll was fine, the fish was fine, nothing great, nothing bad but to be fair that's all I usually look for in rolls because I don't love them but I'm glad I didn't dislike it. I have been here three times. The first two times were amazing. I had the Lion King Roll and the "Shenanigans" Cocktail. Both were amazing and large servings. The last time I came I was told the old cocktail menu has been discontinued as the previous bar tender left and took the cocktail list with them.
