Brother's in town so went here to celebrate his birthday. Every person we encountered that worked there was friendly and exceptional from when we walked up to when we left. Had a 4pm reservation because we booked late but it was perfect. We ended up being there for the sunset. We had the perfect outside table by the water. Started with the ube hot bread and coconut shrimp. I love the Caesar salad with fish so I stuck with that. They ordered the pumpkin pesto pasta and Caesar with fish. This is probably my favorite place on Maui. It is loved by locals and tourists alike. It's small, loud and historic. It survived the fires which in itself is amazing. And it marches on. You will not find a better staff. A limited menu but everything on it is an experience. Also amazing cocktails and a solid wine list. The last time we dined here was 2019 - and it remains the same - and I mean that as a compliment. Check out the menu and other reviews. The only shortcoming is limited parking (very limited) so take an Uber or park at the Safeway up the street and good it. Also - make a reservation - getting g a table as a walk I. I insisted we support this area in some way so I found this place. OMG! The food is amazing!! The view is stunning, our server (born and raised in the area) was soo kind and welcoming..the entertainment they had that day was so good I could have stayed and enjoyed him all day..it was a pleasure supporting the area and continue to pray for their journey back. It was, however, very disappointing that while we were driving away (not toward town as requested, but back out to the main highway) a young man standing on the road yelled "GO HOME!" Repeatedly. Our party of four stopped in for brunch recently and had a great experience. Ellen made excellent menu recommendations, was very accommodating, and just overall lovely. I wish we'd had more time on Maui because I'd would've loved to have gone back. I think we ended up with a breakfast plate, a Gainz plate, chilaquiles, and some ube hot bread, although I wasn't paying much attention to the table because mine was so good! The scenery can't be beat and we were even treated to turtles swimming off the shore and a cute little crab moving about. The food was ok for brunch, but I'd suggest the hostess be a bit more thoughtful with seating arrangements. Please consider avoiding placing elderly guests or families with small children at the high-top tables in the bar area, as those seats can be uncomfortable, unsafe, and less suitable for them. A little more attention to this would really improve the experience. The glare from the hostess after providing this feedback was not necessary. I was very frustrated as I called in previously to request a table that was not in the bar area - request was obviously overlooked. read more

The happy hour menu, I was so looking forward to trying a drink called the "Spa Day." It has prairie cucumber vodka, watermelon, lime & mint. Not only did this drink sound amazingly refreshing but it was also as delicious as it sounded. Even both my mom & I had two drinks each. I seriously couldn't get enough. These flavors mix so well together, my first sip made me feel like I was swept away to an actual spa. Plus this beautiful pink drink was garnished with the cutest finishing touch, a cucumber slice & a mint leaf. Making this drink very instagramable. So if you also happen to be a fan of those ingredients, I highly recommend trying this drink. It's currently a Chelsie favorite. As for my guy, he loves an ice cold coke & will literally order this every time we go anywhere. So he was also content with his drinks as well. The calamari is always a fun & tasty appetizer. Although needs a garnish boost to make this dish a little more instagramable. I'd experiment with possibly adding an artichoke garnish to the tartar sauce. Plus enhancing the color of the entire dish with some micro greens. Or even placing the sauce/lemon in the center placing the calamari around it like flower petals. Just to help make a simple dish a little more sophisticated. The coconut shrimp has always been a fan favorite for my mom & George. They devoured the plate. I on the other hand am not usually a fan of coconut & shrimp together. However I do like shrimp so I'd be open to trying a different shrimp dish in the future. Maybe something with avocado or pineapple might be fun. I do have to admit though this dish was presented beautifully. I liked the use of space, colors & how the sauce was drawn on the plate. It made this dish look like an edible art piece. The seared ahi bruschetta is one of my personal favorites. I actually ordered this on a dinner date in the past. So this is round number two for me. Although I'd recommend this appetizer to be served as bite sized pieces. It would make it easier to share & less messy trying to bite into it. Also micro greens to garnish on top would give a more vibrant green then the copped version. Plus pouring the balsamic at the table might give this dish that extra wow factor. That would also help keep the ahi that vibrant red/pink color longer. I didn't try the Wagyu Burger this time, however George loved it. My mom also tried a bite & liked it too. I was busy sampling the frites, I liked the flavor of the seasoning used. I think it might have been a cajun spice? As for dessert, I thought I wanted to try their malasadas. Except those weren't available during their happy hour. However I did get to try the flourless chocolate cake with berries & Ube gelato. I'm honestly surprised with how quickly I fell in love with this dish. It is amazingly delicious, that warm melt in your mouth chocolate cake. With a berry & an iced cold bite Ube gelato. Is everything my dreams are made of. Plus I'm a huge fan of anything Ube. So I definitely highly recommend this dessert & is a Chelsie favorite for sure. I was also impressed with the color theme for the table. I liked the touch of black for the coasters, straws & black/white napkins. Plus the different shades of blue for the dishes used. It all ties together nicely with the logo & giving off ocean vibes. Overall everyone we encountered on this visit was very nice & accommodating. Plus being born & raised on Maui. Literally the best sit down restaurant in Maui, hands down! From the amazing food to the incredible service, and the oceanside views, it's just perfection! Both of the main dishes were a delight, I preferred the veggie stir fry with fish, but both were good. The service here is so amazing! The drinks are okay (that's pretty subjective), but it's almost perfect on every other way! I really liked the bread pudding dessert as well. Mai tai and beer good. Order a mimosa and told free upgrade to other flavors, so tried watermelon. Not fresh watermelon juice, and tasted horrible. Mala lived up to the hype! Ambience is obviously a 5/5, right on the water. Emma, our server was so sweet and welcoming. We ordered the calamari for an appetizer, it was tender and I could have had a vat of the artichoke tartar sauce. For the main we had filet and added a scallop. What a wonderful small restaurant right on the beachfront. Mala Ocean Tavern was one of many businesses in the immediate area that survived the Aug. 2023 fire. We had a group of seven, all family for ba late breakfast. We had only a short wait and were able to have a table next to the window, looking out over the water. You could also dine outside on the patio. Our server was very pleasant and attentive. Our orders were taken in an efficient manner without being rushed. We had a variety of items, no two dishes the same. EVERYONE was quite pleased. Our son's family who lives in Lahaina had never been to Mala and they felt like they had missed out for the past 7 years. Of course with two teenage kids, they can't afford to eat out often! The prices are right in line with what you would expect from a resort restaurant in Maui, not cheap but not ridiculously expensive. We will probably drop in soon on our next trip in April. read more

We come to Maui every few years for the last 25 years. Mala has always been one of our stops for dinner. We arrived 10 min early but were seated 10 min late. We had the ube hot bread, which I was disappointed, a roll for 14 is a bit much. Skip it. The Brussels sprouts were fantastic though. Sweet savory and still cabbagy. The surf and turf skirt steak with octopus was great but I only got on piece where others got two . Scallops were great but smallish. And while fish was tasty but the slaw was a bit salty so we just ate the fish with ginger. The real disappointment came from the duck. Describes as crispy and med rare we got soggy and med well. They replaced it immediately but the next one was rare and still soggy skin. At that point we just decided leave it's the faro under it was really neat thought like a fried rice with duck confit, but a tad salty. Overall we really enjoyed most our food. Ambiance was real nice, cool ocean breezes at 7pm sunset. Service though was fantastic as always. Very nice people and attentive. read more

Small but beautiful spot by the water. Saw some turtles while we waited for our table. One of only 2 restaurants left standing after the fires. Our table was right by the ocean and had really nice views. Our server was Cat and she was wonderful and attentive. Enjoyed the yummy Ube hit bread with whipped honey butter to start, ceasar salad, as well as shrimp papardalle pasta, seared scallops, and pan fried mahi mahi. All were very good, and the risotto was especially delicious. Dessert was good, but someone in our party wished there was more caramel. Waitstaff was so accommodating - we added 4 people after we had ordered already and they were so helpful in rearranging and getting us all together. We had fresh squeezed watermelon juice for the kids -- so yum, that is a must order. Poisson Cru was a bit rough around the edges. I was envisioning more of a crudo type of dish so wasn't what I expected. We had the ube sweet bread, quite possibly the best carbs ever to be made! You must try it, you won't regret it! Fish and chips -- I was surprised by the juiciness and freshness of the fish, would recommend. Hubby added a version of a steak and egg dish -- decent but not world changing for me. My husband and I visited Mala Ocean Tavern while on vacation, and even though it wasn't a special occasion, the evening definitely felt like one. We had the ahi bruschetta appetizer which was fantastic. He ordered the prawns and I had the scallops with risotto for mains -- both dishes were excellent and clearly made with care and fresh ingredients. We sat inside, and while we didn't have an ocean view at sunset, the atmosphere absolutely didn't disappoint. The interior feels like an elevated fishing shack -- relaxed, coastal, and perfectly fitting for the area. We even had the chance to meet the owner, who was incredibly gracious and welcoming - making us feel like locals. I highly recommend Mala Ocean Tavern. Use to be great - something happened? Wife and I have been going to Mala Ocean Tavern for the last 10 years. Some items on the menu are still (coconut shrimp) great but our entrees seafood pastas dishes just got boring after a few bits - sorry to say we couldn't finish our plates. Not good - in my opinion it was simply not a well designed flavor / plate to serve. The wait staff are the most wonderful people and we loved them - the food was just off base for us. We are from Salt Lake City metro area and are pretty spoiled with fantastic restaurants - still for the $ and legacy Mala has earned - they need to step up their game - my wife said she lived her Mai Tai cocktail drink was top notch! read more

I was recommended Mala Ocean Tavern by a dear friend of mine, and I know she'd never steer me wrong. Mala's is right on the water with a beautiful ocean view. Even after the sun set, the ambiance of the moonlight and sound of the waves crashing was amazing! Everyone was kind, but our server, Carlos, was truly the star. He was running a big area with lots of folks, but he made it work. He was not overbearing, and was just the perfect amount of attentive. He was honest in his recommendations and made several subtle jokes that gave just the right amount of dad-vibes. He brought us bubbly to celebrate our marriage and high-fived us several times The food was incredible! We ordered the Ahi Bruschetta and the Calamari to start. The Ahi Bruschetta is a MUST ORDER! So tasty, not fishy, and the tomatoes and balsamic vinaigrette were perfectly complementary. The calamari was also good but I probably would've preferred to just get four pieces of the Ahi Bruschetta. For our mains, my husband ordered a Filet and I got the Opakaka Whole Fish!! Both were SO GOOD. The filet was cooked perfectly and very flavorful. I had the Whole Fish over rice with tons of mushrooms, snow peas, and ginger topped with a light soy sauce. Very tasty and didn't feel too heavy after eating the whole fish. Overall, SO good. Would highly recommend making a reservation here; it fills up quick.
