This is my new favorite place in Maui. Our waitress Karina was so nice and welcoming and assured me the Wagyu burger would not disappoint and she was right. It was one of the most delicious burgers I've ever had. Paired with the Greek salad and the amazing Maui ocean view from the back dining tables, you can't beat it. We then came back for dinner and the seared ahi with mashed potatoes, beans and mushrooms in a light sauce was delicious. We then came back for breakfast before heading to the airport and the eggs Benedict with flank steak was also delicious. Really liked the fresh Ube hot bread as a starter. At every meal the manager stopped by and asked if we needed anything and how the meal was. You don't see that everyday and it speaks to how well run Ma La is. What an experience! First off, we were seated on the deck next to the ocean which made for a great atmosphere. Watching the sun set during dinner service while hearing the waves crash onto the rocky shore was definitely memorable. As for the food here, the ahi bruschetta was out of this world. The ube hot bread was also very good. For the main course we had a whole fish (I believe it was an Opakapaka aka pink snapper). The Opakapaka was fresh and flavorful. By far the best meal we had during our time in Maui. The ambiance was amazing from the second we walked in. I found Mala Ocean Tavern in a Yelp search and it did not disappoint! We made a reservation but it really wasn't needed. We were seated right away - it's a covered porch with wonderful island breezes flowing gently. It was so nice and relaxing to eat while watching the ocean. José was our server - he was so attentive and helpful (as were all the staff). We started with ube bread - delicious!!!! Crusty outside, soft inside, paired with the black salt butter. Highly recommend! My spouse had the "secret" grilled Mahi Mahi fish tacos, which were great and flavorful. I had the build your own omelette (spinach, tomato, Feta cheese) which was fabulous!!! Three of us had dinner at Mala on Saturday, June 13, 2026 and it was fabulous. I had the Poisson Cru Pupu and the Green Coconut Curry. I ordered the curry with the seafood trio of shrimps, mahi, and scallops but the complex flavors would have been just as excellent without the seafood. The Poisson Cru was also a treat. I had just read Michener's "Hawaii" where he describes the making of this ceviche-style dish in detail so I knew I had to try it having seen it on the menu. What an experience. read more

I asked for the sauce on the mahi mahi dish to be on the side but it was so delicious I ended up pouring it on top! The flavors of the catch of the day blended so well together. Mala Ocean Tavern wasn't originally on our list, but a buddy kept raving about it, so we checked it out for brunch. We called ahead for a reservation - got in about 20 or 30 minutes later - and asked for ocean view seating. They have three areas: regular dining tables, a bar, and an outdoor covered patio right by the water. It's open-air but there's a black mesh that kind of blocks the view, but you can still see the ocean, and we even saw turtles bobbing in and out. We sat right at the edge, and you can actually get splashed. Our waitress was super nice, helpful, and attentive. The food was great. I ordered the wagyu burger from the happy hour menu - filling and worth the price. Fries were solid. My wife got the fish burger, which was just fish, lettuce, and bun, but good with the aioli sauce. Didn't try much else, but I saw others enjoying fish and chips and a ube dessert. Parking was easy - we snagged a spot right in front, and they've got a small lot on the side. It's about 10 minutes from the Ka'anapali resort area, and you pass through some of the fire-damaged parts of town, so it's good to support them. Service was great, and there was live music too. Mala Ocean re-opened recently, so I said we have to support local businesses. Its located on Front St in Lahaina right on the water. We started off with the ahi bruschetta. This was an awesome appetizer bc the ahi was fresh, good sized and it paired well with a traditional bruschetta. For my entree, I had the seared scallops on risotto. You may say the scallops were pricey at $61. However, the scallops were fresh, plump and expertly seared. I was full on four scallops. Regarding the ambiance, its laid back island style. You are right on the ocean, and you can hear the crashing waves. Our waitress Cat was excellent. She was super friendly, and she was knowledgable about the menu. Grace, the manager that night stopped by to check on us. That was a nice gesture. I'm glad we were able to support a local restaurant in Lahaina. Make a reservation on Open Table, there were people standing around waiting on a table and we were seated immediately. That is what is called a great first impression! Our server was well informed and had great ideas. We loved the calamari fries, which were recommend and pictured below. Even the manager stopping by the table timing was perfect versus the typical awkward moment we all hate. Our entrees were also wonderful. My bride got Mahi Mahi and I got the scallops. We've been visiting Lahaina for over twenty years and have never discovered this restaurant until now... It's one of only a few currently able to be open on Front Street, absolutely beautiful and right on the water. Like the outside area is RIGHT on the water to the extent we got splashed a little because it was close to high tide. It was a beautiful place to sit. We started with some garlic fries as an appetizer. They were hot and VERY garlicky, as they should be. For entrees we ordered filet mignon, the seared scallops, and the catch of the day which was a hebi fish. I had the scallops and they were very much worth the price tag - large portion of risotto absolutely packed with flavor, four large scallops all beautifully cooked and the balsamic tomatoes and onions added such a nice bright flavor to an otherwise heavy dish. My husband and mother also loved their dishes though the catch of the day might've lacked a little flavor in the sides. Service was solidly good. They have an off brand of Coke (not Pepsi) that was somewhere in between Coke and Pepsi that I liked! I'm sure we'll visit here again. read more

We went at happy hour and the food and drinks were great! Making a reservation is highly recommended because you will get a seat closer to the water. Live music was wonderful. Wait staff was amazing! My friend and I made dinner reservations for Mala Ocean Tavern while visiting Maui. This was off the beaten path and I'm a quiet location by the ocean which I appreciated. Upon arrival, they didn't have our table ready just yet and said we could be seated inside or wait awhile longer. As it was so windy outside, we settled in inside. The inside was also overly cool as the wind was still blowing and the fans were at full blast but the server luckily accommodated us and lowered the power in the fans. Once seated, we ordered drinks and started off with an appetizer. As we had been craving some specialty fries, we went off script a bit and ordered that as our appetizer (Garlic Fries). For my main, I ordered the Catch of the Day and my friend ordered the seared scallops. I did think my fish was slightly overcooked and my friend's Parmesan risotto tasted like you were eating the block of Parmesan straight so these items weren't my favorite but overall they were OK. On the other hand, the presentation of the food was fantastic. All in all, it was worth trying again and I'm glad we went! read more

We had a delightful ladies happy hour here, complete with delicious cocktails and pupus! Our table ordered a few Spa Day and Mala Mule cocktails, made by a fantastic, kind and friendly new bartender. And we ordered: seared ahi bruschetta, vegetarian bruschetta, oyster shooters, poisson cru, crispy calamari, a Greek salad and I am fairly certain a coconut shrimp too! We were seated right next to the ocean, and we were visited by the friendly general manager (who I am impressed to say was also busting out some work touching tables, delivering menus and taking orders). So so so amazing. Came here on our last night and we're so glad we finished our trip at Mala. Our sever was exceptional and went above and beyond. I ordered the lavender cocktail (forgot the exact name) and my partner ordered the Mai Tai. The cocktails were amazing. I got the Mahi Mahi which was so tender and the sides were phenomenal as well. We got the bread pudding for dessert and while it's definitely on the firmer side it was still delicious. The ambiance is also super chic and pretty. We had another fantastic meal here last night! The service was great and the food was delicious! I tasted three cocktails, the Mala Mule, the Mai Tai, and the No Tai mocktail. The Mala mule was delicious and light, not too heavy on the ginger flavor. It was more of a blend between a mule and a mojito. The Mai tai was good and had a POG foam on top, but it was pretty standard. The No Tai mocktail was the juices of the Mai tai without the alcohol, so it was very tart. We also tried three appetizers. The ahi bruschetta was so delicious! The flavors were amazing and the ahi just melted in your mouth. The crispy calamari were flavorful and crisp. The coconut shrimp had great flavor, but the sauces that came with them really sealed the deal, they were so delicious on the shrimp! For dinner I enjoyed the scallops with risotto, which was incredible! It's very heavy, but the scallops were cooked perfectly and the risotto was so flavorful! This restaurant is lovely and it had big windows with a beautiful view of the sunset for a perfect Maui dinner! read more

We went here for our anniversary dinner and it was good. $14 for the Ube hot bread is too much, the portion is small. It was just okay nothing special. The calamari was standard strips that were deep fried but honestly felt like something you could have gotten in the frozen section of Foodland. I got the Filet and the flavor was great. My boyfriend and I had such an amazing dinner at Mala. The restaurant is beautiful and is right on the ocean. Aside from the beautiful tropical ambiance and location, our food was outstanding. The filet mignon was the best that I have ever had. Cooked to perfection and paired perfectly with fresh veggies and mashed potatoes. I ate it so quick! It was just so flavourful and juicy. My boyfriend got the catch of the day and said that it was the best fish he has ever had. The drinks were also amazing. Our waitress, Katie, was so lovely and very attentive. We stopped here for a quick lunch during a family vacation and loved it. I had the fish plate with mahi mahi, rice, and these delicious sauteed local veggies -- it was one of the best meals I've had in Maui. My son absolutely loved the sweet potato ice cream that came with his french toast. This is one of the best restaurants I've been to! The food and drinks were absolutely delicious, service was amazing, and we had an ocean front view. It was so ocean front that my husband was getting splashed, but we didn't mind, it added to the experience. It's also in front of a turtle sanctuary so you will see turtle heads popping up for air throughout your dining experience.
