A very laidback, casual tavern with terrific food and great service. The Mahi was perfect and served over potatoes with vegetables and a delicious broth. Our server was incredibly friendly as were the several people bringing our food to the table. You are well taken care of at Mala. We dined outside in "the garden" next to the bay. We headed to brunch at Maka Ocean Tavern after we landed in Maui. It took less than an hour to get there and we quickly found parking in one of their 3 lots. Street parking wasn't available but they do have lots shared with Fridas Mexican Beach House and Star Noodle. We got there earlier than our reservation time so we grabbed a Build Your Own Bloody Mala and Oyster Shooter at the bar. After we closed out our tab, we checked in with the hostess. She sat us right next to the window inside by the bar. It was the best seat in the house! The view was amazing. You have to have some alcohol with brunch so we ordered Build Your Own Mimosas. The food items we ordered to share were Seared Ahi Bruschetta, Calabrese Flatbread and Lamb Pita. The Seared Ahi Bruschetta was drenched in balsamic vinegar so that was a little disappointing. Our Calabrese Flatbread wasn't what we expected so we just each had a slice. The Lamb Pita was better than expected for this restaurant but it was just ok. Their customer service was great and everyone was friendly. They are worth checking out for drinks and their view. read more

The Caesar salad was just ok, but I'm not really a Caesar salad enjoyer generally. The whole fried fish tasted great, but was too messy to eat and was visually unappealing after you were halfway done (and no it wasn't the fish carcass that was unappealing). Well our itinerary for this trip was pretty lax for the last day. On a whim, we decided to go to Mala in the early afternoon to see if we could pop in for a cocktail. Surprisingly, there was not a long wait for a table for 2 and were able to get seated on their lanai. The views here are breathtaking. We even saw some turtles swimming as we waited for our drinks and pupus. Service here is excellent, and our server Cody was super friendly. Mala's cocktails are delicious, using high quality spirits. I got their mule and hubby ordered their mai tai. If you like seafood, there is a wide variety of pupus and entrees to enjoy. Since we had just come from lunch, we ordered the coconut shrimp to snack on and OMG I'm still drooling thinking about it. absolutely loved it here and will definitely be coming back. read more

One of our favorite restaurants to visit and we were so happy to find them open after last year's tragic fire. The food is fresh, flavorful and diverse with the flavors of the island included in many of the dishes. The Ahi Bruschetta is award winning and a must have. The Oyster Shooters are super fresh with a wonderful umami flavor from their handcrafted sauce. If you are lucky, you can get a window seat to see the turtles swimming a few yards from your table. I made a last minute reservation on OpenTable for 4:45pm. The hostess showed us to a table outdoors. We sat alongside the water. It was very sunny so they hinged an umbrella to block out the sun. Unbeknownst to us there are many sea turtles right along the rocks in the water. Our busboy informed us when we first sat down. That made the evening that much more special. And sure enough we saw several turtles bobbing in the water during our dinner hour. We wanted the whole fish that sometimes is offered but it wasn't available that night. The three of us all had the signature seared ahi dinner entree. Served with Ube mashed potatoes and a rich butter sauce with many shiitake mushrooms. We started with cocktails- hubby likes his classic martini and daughter & I got the lava flow. We skipped pu pu's. Good thing too cuz the seared ahi dinner plate was substantial. Dinner was a nice pace. Our server was friendly & attentive. No room for dessert. They offer valet parking but hubby parked at the nearby Safeway. What a great find during our trip. It is literally located where you can feel the splash of the ocean. Our server was new but well trained. We enjoyed a great bottle of Sancerre with the ahi bruschetta appetizer. Don't miss the ube bread loaf either. We had the mahi which came with a broth consisting of heirloom tomatoes, Lima beans, black beans that were a great compliment to the dish. We also had their "known for" seared ahi entree. It melted in your mouth. Came with a beautiful mushroom broth, haricot verts and mashed potatoes. One of the best fish dishes I've ever enjoyed. Service was friendly in this casual space. The dinner reservations were unavailable when I was looking (a few days prior) so we decided to come at lunch. We got a great table in the outdoor patio with ocean views. I think the best thing about this place is the views. The food is good too, and the lunch prices are not bad. Portion size is on the smaller side. Note that they add an automatic 3% kitchen staff tip to the bill and the recommended tip on the bill on top of that starts at 20%. Service was good so not saying that's not justified but just an fyi. I can't say enough great things about this spot! I went for my anniversary and the staff made sure to make it a special stop. The staff was so kind, making sure we were taken care of and being helpful and charming when we had questions. The ambiance was really special. Our table was right next to the water and we spent dinner watching waves washing up onto the rocks. The food was really amazing and made the ambiance even more special. Our waiter recommended the ahi bruschetta to us and it was my favorite bite of the night. The oyster shooter was interesting; I'm glad I tried it but if you're getting an app, go for the bruschetta! The catch of the day was good as were the shishito peppers for a side. The malasadas were great!
