You are a disgrace to malayalee food. i ordered some beef roast and fish curry. It was a nightmare. The beef was boiled and tossed in cubes of onion, it didnt look like it saw any heat in the process, assembly of some sort of it was. Your mixing skills were excellent, the boiled beef was well mixed with your steamed onions. An orange colored beef roast- what is this crap, BJP-friendly beef fry?? Oh and the fish curry- you boiled cubes of fish (your boiling skills are excellent- fish boiled to a pebble like consistency, underspiced beef cubes boiled to leather like consistency, etc etc) swimming in your thick rasam. Your establishment is a disgrace to Kerala and the culinary culture of Kerala, it is a disgrace to your ancestors who came up with these dishes, your mother and grandmothers would've slapped you with a paragon chappal if you served them this food. read more

They newly opened so they have a limited menu of about 10 items... Biryani, parota, a couple appetizers, and a couple curries. Their grand opening is in a couple weeks. One huge negative right off the bat is they did not list their prices on their hand written paper that was their limited menu. Tried Chicken cutlet- 3.5/5. 3 pieces that comes with a pink ranch type sauce. Had to ask for ketchup separately. Not sure if the "splattered sauce" on the plate was supposed to be plating design or what but it looked silly as hell. Taste was ok, but definitely not worth whatever it cost. Parota- 3/5 this is Malabar style so it was made out of Maida (all purpose flour) 100% and is very stretchy and is not the healthiest. I prefer the taste of parotta from Appa Kadai which has wheat in it. Beef roast fry- 3/5 my husband liked it but I thought it was quite average in terms of flavor. I took off a star for the poor customer service- since they had a limited menu we were debating what to get and changed our mind a couple min after we told our order and the server said it cannot be changed since they already started working on it. My husband had ordered chicken cutlet, 3 parotta and beef roast but when I said i didn't want beef roast and he would have to eat the whole thing himself, we decided to change it to chicken biryani for me and 2 parotta and beef roast for my husband. But the server said that's not possible since he already sent in the order. We were not the only ones in the restaurant so there's no way the minute we gave the order the chef started working on it. We told him to at least just give us 2 parotta but he still gave us 3. Also our bill came out to $35 with tax and tip with my husband eating 3 small parotta with beef roast and me just having the 3 cutlets. Unfortunately because they didn't have prices listed, I can only guess that the chicken cutlets were maybe around $8, beef was around $12, and parotta was maybe $3-4 each. Could have gone anywhere else and had a full and satisfying meal. We won't be returning. read more

Just saw this new restaurant in Yelp few days back, finally was able to try it out today so happy we did. Loved the food I ordered few items for togo 1) Malabar Mutton Biryani which was amazing, correct amount of spices & lovely flavors 2)Chicken Stew along with Parotta again very good flavor & Chicken was very tender & parotta was very nice. A recently opened restaurant giving authentic kerala style food. The place is neat and clean and the staff is very friendly and makes you feel at home. We started our order with a plate of beef cutlet. The square cutlet came in 3 pieces and was accompanied by pickled onions and tomato sauce. We loved the slightly crispy cutlet and the presentation. The we ordered two drinks. Kulukki sarbat came in pretty fast and the red drink with the basil seeds and green chilly was sweet and sour and cooling. It is recommended for anyone who likes a bit of spiciness in their drink. Ginger lime was the other one we ordered and it was super refreshing and the flavor of the mint and ginger and lime was not over powering, but balanced. For the main course we ordered a chapathi and a porotta with beef roast. The chapathi was a homemade version, but with a larger diameter. Porotta was thin and soft and there is nothing else to say than that I loved it. The beef roast was yummy but it resembled more like chilly beef. The beef was well cooked and the dish was great with both chapathi and porotta. The roast was perfect quantity for both of us. The menu was still getting updated and some of the dishes where not available. The price seems reasonable and the dishes we had were really good and they are off to a great start.! read more

This is just a soft review as the place is yet to establish well. We were in the area n found this place on el camino real, went to their site to check out their menu which convinced me to try out the place. When we entered a guy seated us but dint hand us the menu. It took another guy 5 mins to approach us with menu (its not the menu online) He also mentioned that many items were not available yet. The ambience - nothing much to say. For a place thats new I would like more brighter lights. Hoping there will be more as this weekend is their grand opening. There's no wall decor yet(?) We ordered a chili gobi, vegetable stew, appam and parota. the Chili gobi was great but i wish it was a lil more dry n crispy. The vegetable stew - Portion could be a little more (priced a little higher too) It tasted great but there were too many whole spices (cinnamon sticks, lots of cardamom n cloves) There were also many raisins which i dint mind but many people dont prefer raisins in savory dishes. The parota was good. no complaints there but the appams were heavy and tore when i lifted off the basket. Wish they were light n cooked better. When we entered, we noticed a poster on the door which mentioned free desserts for the grand opening which wasnt offered to us until we asked. Guests on the neighboring table left without the desserts. Overall there is scope for improvement as the food is good. Service has to improve especially if it is the grand opening weekend n there were big groups walking in. read more

Ended up ordering from this restaurant guess what its a complete disaster. Chicken 65 is totally burnt and Schezwan chicken fried rice is ketup rice with pieces and carrot. My advice avoid this place for good health. $33 is gone waste as it ended up in trash. read more

This place used to be amazing. It had authentic Kerala food once upon a time. Even now , on fortunate days you get amazing food. Other days- terrible ones. I suspect there are multiple chefs here and depending on the day, you get the good one or the bad one. I have seen good food usually when I order on Thursdays or Fridays. Alas, here I am living in CA now and I recently had Malabar Coast again. It's as wonderful as I remember or better. I live about an hour from here but am looking for every excuse to go down and eat here, plus take home extras! This place is fantastic! Some of the best food I've had in bay area so far. Spices are well balanced and meat perfectly cooked. The parotha was super flaky and none of the items were oily or over spiced. And so affordable! Hope their quality remains the same over time. read more

Restaurant fully converted to take out only, but they still have tables. No silverware, just paper plates, plastic forks and a water filter with dusty cups for water. They had no tea either. We ate in, but I should have listened to my hunch and suggested elsewhere. They did have one good dish, which was this somewhat puffy naan like bread that was delicious. Their stews (unlike most Indian restaurants, they serve beef!) were possibly a day old, or at least on the burner for too many hours. It was still edible,but the spices were either over cooked, or badly portioned. We had two different curry like concoctions with the bread. Even though the two stew/curries were different, they tasted very similar to each other. Visually, one had whole red chillies, and the other did not. Ultimately, food was 4 stars (I am told that this place was much better before covid), minus 3 stars for terrible service and inept dine in experience, plus one star because this is a small family run establishment that probably is surviving, hanging on by a thread. Came 3-4 times after the first visit and hosted a lunch for colleagues with Malabar coast food. These guys turned the service around! Putting 5 deserving stars back. Now I am one of those customers who are invested in their overall well-being and don't want them to ever leave Bay Area : 4 stars for the food. Taking one star away for poor service. I bet this restaurant can better job in serving the customers. I think this is their first time running business. Owners : namaskaram! :-). Many folks who visited the restaurant gave one consistent feedback. "Food is good. But front desk experience is poor". When I visited to pick up to-go the gentleman at the front was letting a crowd build. The crowd had couples who were coming first time to dine-in. Some were there to order to-go. And some to pick up to-go - like myself. The gentleman at the front was busy taking order or answering a customer call. I saw atleast 2 parties leave the restaurant since they felt they waited long enough. Another friend reported that the person who was supposed to seat a party of 6 didn't show the initiative to join 2 tables Customers eventually did it themselves. In short, you guys can do better and turn this around. Don't worry about comment about certain food items. Here is my advice : make the menu a little lighter (trying to serve too many items can affect quality of some items, see below reviews), hire extra help to host customers read more

I'm so excited that regional Indian cuisines are here in Northern California! This place specializes in seafood and other dishes from Kerala. Must try: 1) Cochin chemmeen - perfectly fried shrimp with coconut shavings 2) Beef fry - so tasty, and one of the few times you will taste an authentic Indian beef dish. 3) Malabar fish curry- try this with "kappa" which is tapioca. Comfort food: Beef cutlet - appetizer with great flavor and texture I'm really looking forward to trying their chicken curry with appams next time. Appams are fermented rice breads. Great if you are avoiding gluten. Also, if you are Asian, you'll recognize and love their wonderful fragrance! They also have fried anchovies (netholi fry). So many yummy dishes to try! EVERY single dish here is delicious!! It reminds me of the food at my grandmother's home in Kerala. We were SO excited to try this restaurant from a recommendation from a chef in culinary school, but my husband and I both ended up getting sick from the chicken curry. I don't think the chicken was fully cooked and/or it had spoiled. Our friends liked it, but since my parents were born in Kerala I knew the food was not legit. Got up one Saturday morning and was craving a good Kerala style beef fry. Got it delivered. So bad I had to toss it out. Fool me once...

Went this afternoon and they said they still had only the limited menu. There were only 10-12 items so we thought they should be good. We ordered appam, veg stew and veg Biriyani. The appams arrived super cold, as though they were made last night. I lived in Calicut 20+ years and the stew is by no stretch of imagination a Malabar stew. It was more of a peas masala and kurma mix but had no flavor. I haven't seen a stew made seasoned with mustard seeds and red chilies and without any coconut milk. Also the vegetables in both the stew and the biriyani looked like they had come out of a frozen cut vegetable packet. The biriyani had carrot and zucchini too. At the end of the meal, we asked one of the guys there why the stew was made this way and asked him if it had any coconut milk. He said he had "no idea" what a stew should look or taste like! Aren't waiters supposed to be aware of what goes into dishes etc? Also, considering this is the soft opening, one would expect good food and people coming and asking you how the experience was. Service was poor, and only 3-4 families were dining so it could have easily been better. read more

Awesome kerala food. Very different recipes for beef and mutton. Mutton curry was different but very good. Could taste the real mutton flavor, not so salty. Fish cutlets were good too. All the negative reviews are mostly due to the limited menu or might be delay in service . Thank You, Malabar Coast for having the Chicken Roast on your menu. I have been looking for a dish similar to what my friend made 20 years ago. My friend is from Kerala and have lost contact with her and the recipe for this chicken dish. Malabar's version of this dish is great; complex flavor of sweetness, spices, and spiciness. Will definitely go back for the Chicken Roast. Only downside is the portion; there was only about four little pieces of bony chicken in one order. The butter chicken was good also; it has more of maybe cumin than I'm used to but it made it taste different and more interesting than other butter chicken I've had. Will go back for this also. The Natholi fry was still crispy even after sitting for about 10 minutes in a covered container during the drive home. Pretty tasty, also. They have parotta. I wish they serve naan. I love all three dishes and will definitely return to try other dishes. Could have given 5 stars if portion size was better. read more

We had Biryani and Chicken Samosa. Samosa was ok. But Malabar Mutton Biryani was awesome - Authentic malabar style mutton biryani was served with papad, raitha and pickle. Amazing food. They have just opened a week ago and have limited options on the menu. But whatever they made was finger licking delicious. We came here on a weeknight and had their mutton biriyani, fish cutlet, mutton roast and porotta.it was the best biriyani we had! It is not crazy spicy like the other bay area biriyani that we have had before and had an unique combination of spice. I loved the cutlet as well. The quality of this place has gone downhill very fast in the last 6 months. I have been ordering food online from this place for more than a year. They did not have consistent quality for all dishes, but at least a few items were good and I used to repeatedly order them. Recently two different orders I placed have been total disasters - the taste is off, the meat was old and reheated - I had to throw the food away.
