Got a Groupon at this place for "Family BBQ Meal" and Carwash. The family bbq meal was priced at $24.99 and the drive thru Carwash was priced at $22.00. Food - the portion of food that was given, wasn't even worth $15 if that. I saw tons of reviews saying this place has the best bbq, I'm sorry but I highly disagree. The pulled pork was WAY too sweet, I mean how much sugar do you put in your sauce? The cole slaw was runny and flavorless, the baked beans were decent but that was the highlight of the meal, which is sad in itself. Carwash - in no way, shape or form is this a $22 wash. Drive thru and my car is STILL dirty?!?? Jeezus Christ how in gods name are you still in business. Service - much like all the service you get in Virginia, mediocre if that. I waited 15 minutes to even be acknowledged. Glad I paid for this discounted through Groupon, because I would not pay for this otherwise. I took my car through the wash and it came out not only with multiple noticeable scratches, but smelling like total feces. Seriously, I don't know what they are putting into the wash, but even after eating beans, Taco Bell, and egg salad within one hour of each other and the atomic flatulence that followed, I have never smelled a more foul fecal matter odor. Unless you want your car to come in looking like a '24 3 Series BMW and come out looking like a '97 Corolla AND smell like your great grandmothers 3 week crusty unwashed bum, I'd recommend not taking your car through the wash here. read more

The food is the best damn barbecue in Virginia hands down!!! Dealing with the cashiers, I don't go to anybody but Michael Lawrence. He's bout 6-3 and looks like a basketball or baseball player. You cannot miss him. He is a Godsend when it comes to being a cashier. The poster child of the definition of what a cashier should be. The personification lol. But overall, I used to come to that store as a kid. I was always treated like a son when I came there. It is a family atmosphere and they treat all their customers as such. They get the same treatment. The food was just OK. We passed up Mission BBQ to try this place out. Maybe it was the HUGE pig head plastered on the side of the building that made us want to try it. I was really excited because in my experience, "hole in the wall" type places are awesome for food! We had heard that this place was supposed to be good, but I was a tad bit underwhelmed by the food to be honest. My husband and I both had the BBQ & Brisket Platter. For my sides I got baked beans and fries, he got mac n' cheese and green beans. The green beans looked like it had bacon in them, so I was like..."Oh this is gonna be bomb!" Nope, they were so bland. No hint of bacon taste at all. The other sides were decent, but I've had better. The BBQ was tasty, but was a little disappointed they only had 1 sauce. Places like Whitner's has a few options for sauces. The brisket was alright too, a little too sweet for my taste. The only thing that I absolutely loved were the hush puppies. But you can never go wrong with those. Each of our meals came with 4. I wish the butter they give you was softer. You have to warm them up in your hands before opening the tiny packages so you can use them for the hush puppies. Great flavor without having to add sauce, but if you need some they provide a delicious worcestershire based sauce that has some heat with it! And if you ever thought to yourself that eggs and BBQ would be a bad combination. Think again! They have a BBQ omelette that is on point. It made me a believer. Tragic.....Brookwood Farms you get for $3.97 a tub in Walmart is better....makes Doughties look gourmet, Pierce's it is not. Stoner teen charged $8.99 me for a large served me something else much smaller after seeing the table next to me with their order. Room temperature mushy BBQ drown in some sort of molasses or brow sugar base sauce (Sweet baby Ray's ? Possible ?) Only upside was they toasted the bun or would been a complete disaster. I like this gas station - I haven't had their BBQ so I can't comment on that - but it seems fairly legit as when I stop in around 6-7am I see the employees going out to the BBQ area outside to get more or to turn it or check on the meat. They have plenty of gas pumps so I've never had to wait - the inside is spacious and well-kept - and they have a REALLY nice car wash area attached. I prefer the touchless high-end wash which is expensive as hell at like $22 and the cheapest being $12 or something.... but it's fast and pretty thorough. It tends to get really crowded on weekends and nice days at this car wash but the staff are friendly and helpful and do what they can to minimize the wait. Went back since I've been dreaming of those fries I had on my first visit. The Hubs still was thinking that this was his favorite beef brisket... The food was different this time. The beef brisket was not swimming in sauce nor was it chopped/minced. This time it was sliced brisket but really fatty. The Hubs' now ranks Beach Bully's brisket higher. I'm guessing because Malbon's is cooked on the flat-top the fat doesn't have time to burn off a bit like @ Beach Bully's. Even so, it was definitely a high-fat brisket that day (we went to BB the next day and found the meat more meaty than fatty). My Boss Hog was great like the last time. If you go to Malbon's...definitely the pulled pork is where it's at. That seems to be more of a consistent product. Top it with coleslaw and you're good to go! But the fries...nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Ok, let me not exaggerate. First off...they were PERFECTLY cooked again. BUT...here's the caveat...THEY WERE FROZEN and not fresh cut like last time. Epic sadness. I will note, however, that during our previous visit, I did see these fries in a platter a few orders ahead of us. So, I'm not sure if they just alternate between the two or not. So, if you go expecting fresh cut fries, just be forewarned that they might be straight from the bag. Still, they do fry them perfectly. All in all, a great place to stop at. Wow. Just wow. We've said for years now we'd stop in and try this place and today we finally did. It's basically what I expected from a BBQ joint in a gas station! I got the hog pen platter and my husband got the beef brisket platter, both were AMAZING. For the price the amount of food is fair! But this is really some of the best barbecue in the Hampton roads area. We have struggled to find a good place and we are so happy we finally tried Malbon a today. Service was quick. Food was fresh and hot. The potato wedges are my favorite. We will for sure be back to try their breakfast. Four stars for the food. If you don't know Malbon Bros it is a gas station, restaurant and car wash in one. The BBQ is great (keep in mind I am from the Northeast and am not a BBQ expert). But it is cooked in a slow grill and my Southern born and bred friends say it is great. The car wash is good. Prices right for a drive through and gets the job done. I had a fairly large order for Mother's Day, placed my order in plenty of time, paid for it in full. Had my son go to pick it up and he was informed they didn't have my order by that name. What? I ordered it thru Yelp, called that customer service, very pleasant, very helpful, great customer service, she got it straight immediately, it was under my initials instead of my full first name or last name. Ordered delivery from Malbon Bros last night. Delivery was on time, but the food quality & quantity was subpar. We ordered ribs, brisket, and pork, with a side of hush puppies. The ribs were good, but seemed like a small half rack. The brisket was flavorful, but again lacking in quantity. The hush puppies were literally BLACK in color from probably using old frying oil. We threw all of them in the garbage. In talking to other customers, seems like the quality of food from MB's goes down at night when the normal cook isn't working. I've went into the store several times an hour before they close the restaurant side and been told they have shut down already. Someone from MB's should look into the closing staff's practices and quality of food at night. We have eaten there many times, but won't try to order food in the evening ever again. read more

First time in here and it's tucked in a small corner inside the gas station with about six or seven seats at a bar style table. Ordered the hog pen platter which is the pulled pork platter. It comes with four hush puppies and two sides. I got the macaroni and cheese and green beans. The macaroni was delicious, the green beans had smoked bacon in them but the green beans lacked flavor. The hush puppies are great. The pulled pork is really good but I am still a big fan of mission BBQ. The BBQ sauce tastes like A1 steak sauce with a bunch of seasoning in it. Not a fan of the sauce. The food is overall good for being in a gas station. I enjoyed it. They have grab and go items as well like Mac and cheese, baby back ribs, chicken salad, etc. definitely recommend getting the Mac and cheese and the pulled pork but get your own BBQ sauce. read more

This is Carolina style BBQ! So if you're not accustomed to it, you may not appreciate it at first... This is the BBQ I miss most! Because it's so rare unless you live in North Carolina or southern VA. I still remember when I moved to lower Virginia in 2002... while settling in and getting acquainted with my surroundings, I noticed that they like BBQ around here so I figure I'd go try the nearest one (I was working @Dam Neck, VA at the time)... Now before I go on, I need to give you the background... I had never been to the Carolinas and I was just coming from California, where there are NO, count'em ZERO, Carolina style BBQ dining! Needless to say, we folks out west generally have our preconceived ideas of what "BBQ" is... and it usually deals with some kind of rub or basting with a typical dark red sauce. There are so many BBQ restaurants out here but NOT ONE does Carolina style. So you have to understand the initial shock that incurred when my plate came out... "Uh what is this? This ain't BBQ! This doesn't even smell like BBQ!" And sure enough, didn't taste like it either. Not that it was bad, it was just so different! I wasn't used to all that vinegar-based style of BBQ... out of all the different types this is the most unique! Who would have thought good BBQ could be had inside a gas station, but apparently Malbon Brothers is a little hot spot for their famous pulled pork sandwiches! Boy did it grow on me! I ordered the Boss Hogg and that was enough pig to keep me satisfied until the sun went down. What makes it stand out is the way they toast the bun. The just treat the sandwich like a panini. Texture galore. I can't think of another place that does that. Add on sauces are delish. Fries are out of this world. They don't give you very many but if you order big you don't need them. You will want them...but you won't need them. They are so good you will think they are frying them in duck fat. Pig fat is the more likely culprit. The finest barbecue in the land is located in a gas station in Kansas City (not an opinion, a proven fact). So I ate here pretty quickly after I moved to town. First off the menu is needlessly complicated and doesn't just consist of barbecue. In my mind going to a barbecue restaurant for grilled sausage and peppers is like going to Applebee's for barbecue ribs. The menu didn't really give me any indication of what kind of smoked meats I could get on a sandwich (or I wasn't able to figure it out). I told the counter guy what I was hoping to ingest and he interpreted that into a pulled pork sandwich (I asked for sausage, but he told me they only grill sausage). What I got was 2 or 3 ounces of pretty dry pulled pork on a dinky little bun and some fries. I didn't think much of the sauce. I'm not a hater of the Carolina style sauces, but the Malbon Brothers one tasted a bit like it had cigarette ash in it, that may be a feature and not a bug to some people, but I don't much care for the taste of cigarette ash. I just don't think Malbon Bros. offers me enough to go back, though I probably will. I will, though, be prepared to not really enjoy my meal and maybe rethink my allegiance for gas station barbecue. read more

I'm not much of a BBQ person, but this place has some really good BBQ Pork! This place is inside the back of a convenience store (who would have thought?) and is just awesome. They have a huge menu but a local favorite is their BBQ pork sandwich. Which is exactly what I got. Its BBQ pork, slaw, and BBQ sauce in between two buns. If you get the special, it comes with fries and a 20oz drink for 5.99! Awesome deal. It was very very good! Don't let the gas station scare ya and try their BBQ pork! This one was a real surprise. It is a little barbecue restaurant in a gas station and the food was delicious. It had the feel of a old-time diner with counter service and 8 or so tables. We ordered barbecue pulled pork sandwiches which were made in front of us by a very pleasant cook. The pulled pork was very tender and cooked perfectly, served on a soft buns heated on a sandwich press. We had a side of coleslaw and baked beans, both of which were delicious. We got a groupon offer for this place, the reviews were decent, so we accepted it and used it this weekend. DISAPPOINTING! When the word BBQ is in your company's name, shouldn't you have a GRILL in the food prep area? My wife ordered Ribs, I had a pulled pork & brisket combo. The Ribs were gross. They tasted oven baked. There was no smoke flavor whatsoever. And worse, when my wife ordered them, they were nuked from the refrigerator. What kind of BBQ place does this? The hot side items are all nuked from the refrigerator too and they're tiny; smaller than KFC's side items! The pulled pork was pretty good, their sauces are unique and delicious (but they didn't save the ribs). The brisket was done on a flat top but it was tender and the sauce was good... but again, no smoke flavor whatsoever. Never will we come here again. We are still getting over the disappointment 2 days later. A customer there with a groupon told us that Whitner's Barbecue is so much better and the kicker is, Whitney is about 1/2 mile from where we live! Fail! read more

I'm a huge fan of any BBQ...Carolina, Texas, Memphis...you name it, I'll give it a whirl. Malbon was pretty eclectic. Situated in the back of a gas station (with a car wash!), it definitely would not be the first place I would think to grab some authentic pulled pork. Now that I've tried it, its very Delicious! Do not pass this up! Large portions and reasonably priced. I really enjoyed the Boss Hog sandwich. Their vinegar based BBQ sauce is tasty. I think this is worth a shot if you are in the Tidewater/Oceana area. Some other notes: Their sides are standard...nothing special like their pulled pork. This review is for the Hilltop location, which is fairly new. I'd heard of Malbon Brothers but we rarely get to the other location, so we stopped in for dinner tonight. I had the BBQ and Brisket platter and enjoyed it very much. The brisket was very tender and about melted in your mouth, and pork was very good with the slaw. I didn't even use the extra sauces because the meat tasted so well on their own. Where they are now in Hilltop has been a number of BBQ places over the last several years. Malbon Brothers BBQ is actually located in the Citgo convenience store. There's just six stools at the counter where you order, but additional tables in the store to enjoy your BBQ. Malbon knows BBQ, carolina-style pork BBQ to be specific. They should, they used to have one of the largest hog farms in the country. I usually order a Boss Hog (large pulled pork bbq sammich, there's a smaller Top Hog) with a dollop of coleslaw on top and slather their house-made bbq sauce (either Tilli's Carolina style or Billy's Pig Pickin bbq sauce).
