    Strawberry shortcake
    Bryant G.

I've been gatekeeping this one to myself for a while. The food is consistently well-seasoned, and some of rotating menu options keeps it exciting. On this visit, the salad was fresh, the shrimp and grits were executed flawlessly, and the oysters were lightly fried to perfection. Duck wings, yes, yes! But that burger, OMG! The atmosphere has the right balance of relaxed, intimate, and refreshingly free of too much noise and chaos that can overtake so many dining rooms. It's the kind of place where you can actually enjoy your conversation as much as your meal. The service matches the food, which is saying something. After just a few visits, the staff already recognizes me when I walk through the door that attentiveness is something you simply can't manufacture. And that strawberry shortcake was a nice surprise.

Decided to try out this for dinner for Restaurant Week and the food was good. We had the best server, Delilah. I tried the fried Chesapeake oysters, Old Spot Heritage Pork 2 Ways, and Coffee & Cigarettes. The oysters were seasoned well, I like the crispy bbq shoulder more than the braised belly, and the dessert was very tasty-- especially that ice cream. However, the portion was very small to me. Overall, solid menu and food. I would like to try their lunch/brunch items.

Went here before a concert & it was absolutely delicious! I specifically chose this place because my boyfriend loves duck he was thrilled & even though I'm not a fan myself, there were plenty of other things on the menu I would've loved. The vibe was so cute, dark & moody but still somehow felt like home. I'm Southern, & honestly it gave me the coziest southern grandma's kitchen energy warm, lived-in, & full of soul. Our server was super sweet and attentive too (I'm deaf so catching every word was a little tough on my end, but that's on me, not them!). Overall this place is just amazing easy 11/10. If you've been thinking about trying it, stop hesitating & just go. You won't regret it!

I took a recommendation from a stranger to try this place. She said she knew the chef and it would be a fantastic meal. She was spot on. The menu isn't big. Based on other Yelp reviews, I'm guessing the options change frequently. I had the shrimp and grits and it was, by far, the best meal I ate on this trip to DC. The grits were so smooth, rich and full of creamy flavor. The shrimp were seasoned exceptionally. They were "face-on" but when I removed their beady little bug faces, the shells released an amazing red sauce that dribbled all over the shrimp. The portion was satisfying but I could have eaten a bucket more because it was so dang good. Well done chef and thank you to the stranger who sent me here. The next time I'm in DC, I will definitely come back.

Had an amazing time with friends at Mallard. My friend knows I love duck, so of course we had to come here. We tried most of the menu and let me say, everything was amazing! Not a single note. We started with the pimento cheese, the foie gras (the jam with it was to die for), the dumplings, the ahi tuna, and the duck wings which we devoured. We then shared the shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes, the catfish, and of course the duck. Shrimp was so good and flavorful. We loved the fried green tomatoes, and we usually don't like collard greens but we all agreed these were cooked perfectly. And the duck was unreal. Cooked two ways! Sooo delicious Of course we had to try dessert. Both were ... wow! Coffee and cigarettes was addictive. Couldn't stop eating it. It was slutty in the perfect way. And the banana pudding, man I can have more right now. They had caramel popcorn on it too that was the cherry on top. What an amazing experience at Mallard. I cannot wait to come back again!

We had an amazing time during Mallard's restaurant week. For starters, we each had a cocktail, both of which were awesome. Then we began with the three course meal We loved every dish, and signed up for wine pairings with each dish - all of which paired well and were so good. For apps, I had the cool ranch salad and my boyfriend had the pork Reuben dumplings. My salad was huge and SO good. My boyfriend loved the dumplings and said he would order those again as well. For a main, I had pork two ways, and I will be dreaming about this dish until I return. The pork cutlet was so good but that pork belly melted in my mouth. I've never had pork so good in my life. My boyfriend selected the flat iron steak, and expressed his desire to have that again too. For dessert, I had the coffee and cigarettes (which was perfect/ espresso ice cream, chocolate, sauce, omg) and my boyfriend had something with meringue which he highly recommends (and I can attest was so good). I forgot the name though because it wasn't on the online restaurant week menu, whoops. We cannot wait to return, and we will well before the next restaurant week. Well hope to have Gaby as our waitress again- she was lovely! Thanks for the best experience we've had out in a while!

I really wanted to love Mallard, but I just can't. We went on Christmas Eve and luckily were able to get seated near the bar right away. The decor is super cute and funky while the service was wonderful. We started with a gift from the chef which was a delicious bread. I ordered the mallard steam burger and just found it weird. The fries were good but the pepperoncini Mayo just wasn't good. It would have been an average burger otherwise, but this kind of ruined it. Especially for $23 there are such better burgers in the city. My friend got the Christmas Eve special of prime rib. It was cooked perfectly. The Brussel sprouts were great. It came with a Mac and cheese that my waitress said was the best she'd ever had. It tasted liked baked buttered noodles with a bland cheese sauce on top. One of the worst we've both had - we didn't finish it. For nearly $100 including too, I don't say the food was close to worth it. I live nearby and don't think I'll return, such a miss.

Icelandic Char - healthy and delicious

SO GOOD! Ok those Fried Oysters SET IT OFF for me! He had the asparagus to start, which were absolutely delicious and the perfect choice going the healthy route. But it's the oysters for me! I didn't have the Duck Wings but want to try them next time. I had the Shrimp & Grits which were creamy good! He had the Icelandic Char...very good with the rich amount of Char on the Char! Banana pudding for dessert was different...not what I was expecting at all...good but different. Service was excellent and attentive! The manager was on the floor working tables too. Gorgeous ambiance and decor with the theme.

Cute and comfortable restaurant with delicious food. The three of us ordered four starters and two entrees and had to bring a little bit home. The endive salad was so refreshing and tasty. The roasted brussel sprouts were crunchy and soft at the same time. And the poached currants and thyme donut crumble were so good. But this was surpassed by the pork Reuben dumplings - I want more!!! The scallop crudo was an outlier. We don't even finish them. We also ordered the shrimp and grits entree. The shrimp were very good and the grits were great! We also loved the fried green tomatoes with greens. The greens were especially good. Service was exceptional and I love that you can get half pours of the beers so you can try more. And I almost forgot the delicious complimentery squash soup as a starter and chocolate bite as a finish. Highly recommend Mallards.

I attended a group dinner that was hosted in the private dining area. The table was decorated beautifully. The pre-fixed menu was family style with two appetizers, three main dishes, and two desserts. The food was delicious and the portions were large enough for a group of 11 to have a few leftovers. The pre-fixed dinner does not include cocktails but they are about $12-$16 each. The service was also great, we had one main server and she was very nice and attentive. Overall I really enjoyed my experience and my favorite dish was definitely the duck confit.

Mallard was fine, but not great *for me.* I'll preface this by saying that I don't particularly love New American cuisine, but I can appreciate it when it's done well. I dined with a small group of three and we ordered a few dishes to share for the table. The most memorable dish was the amuse-bouche-- a creamy parsnip soup. I honestly wish it had been on the menu so I could've ordered a bowl for myself. We also had the duck wings, fried oysters, a fried and roasted duck entree, and the Brussels sprouts. Everything was fine, but not memorable. Service was great and the inside of the restaurant is really pretty, but the menu isn't calling me to return.

If you're looking for a restaurant that treats you like family and feeds you like royalty, look no further than Mallard. I went there recently to celebrate a friend's birthday, and from the very first greeting to the last bite, the experience was nothing short of exceptional. The staff? Incredibly kind and impressively knowledgeable--they knew the menu like the back of their hand and gave recommendations that were absolutely spot-on. We felt in good hands from the start. To kick off the celebration, they surprised us with complimentary champagne on the house (a classy touch), *and* a special off-menu appetizer as a birthday treat. That kind of hospitality is rare--and very appreciated. Now, let's talk duck. I ordered it, and I'm still thinking about it. Cooked perfectly, served with elegant sides, a rich sauce, and the genius combo of crispy fried duck *and* tender baked duck on one plate. It was like getting the best of both duck worlds. My only wish? That heavenly baked duck deserves to be an entrée all on its own. Give it its own spotlight on the menu--it's that good. Mallard, you've won me over. I'll definitely be back. Duck me up again soon.

Had a wonderful dinner at Mallard last night!! This was our first time there, but we will definitely be back again soon. The dining room and bar were gorgeous, and the plateware was so fun and on theme. The team was outstanding! The manager, Becks, was so welcoming and personable. Our server, Liv, was super attentive and offered great recommendations. And Chef Hamilton, who even came out and spoke to us, is really doing amazing and innovative things in the kitchen!! Finally, the food and drinks were devine!!! Seriously, everything we tasted was outstanding. I loved the fried oysters, but my boyfriend's favorite was the foie gras. We both ordered a "Drinkin Dark Wiskey" and cannot recommend it enough. Overall just a wonderful experience and we will be back to try more!!!

I'm so glad we did because they definitely did not disappoint! The ambiance is absolutely beautiful with its vintage, antique-inspired décor. The restaurant was clean, inviting, and had a really warm atmosphere. The service was exceptional from start to finish. Chris, the manager, was incredibly welcoming and attentive. He came over to greet our table, knew we had been sent over from Gatsby, and surprised us with complimentary pecan cinnamon rolls. Those cinnamon rolls were easily a 10/10--soft, warm, and absolutely delicious! Our server was just as amazing. She was friendly, attentive, and checked on us throughout the meal to make sure everything was perfect. She also gave us some great recommendations, which we appreciated. Food & Drinks: * Belle's Kiss (Mocktail): 8/10 * Belle's Punch: 10/10 (It reminded me so much of Gatsby's Punch!) * Bellini: 7/10 * Deviled Eggs: 9.5/10 * Salmon: 6/10 * Mushroom Rice: 6/10 * Fries: 8/10 * Old Bay Mac & Cheese: 9/10 * Fried Chicken Sandwich: 8/10 * Buttermilk Biscuits: 6.5/10 Overall, I would definitely come back, especially for dinner. I will say that by the time my entrée arrived, I was already pretty full from the deviled eggs, biscuits, and those incredible cinnamon rolls. The only items that missed the mark for me were the salmon and mushroom rice. They were both a little dry and lacked seasoning. As a pescatarian, my entrée options were somewhat limited since I wasn't in the mood for trout or shrimp and grits, so I gave the salmon a try. Even with those few misses, the outstanding service, beautiful atmosphere, and several standout dishes made this a great experience. I'll definitely be back to explore more of the menu.

When everyone who just dined at this restaurant, asks each other, "how does this place stay in…read morebusiness?" when offering such a good deal for all you can eat crab legs and all you can drink. You know it was a solid meal and the experience was excellent! We had a special occasion, and we all came out for all you can eat crab legs. All you can eat cornbread and all you can drink. The alcoholic beverages were limited to Jim beam old-fashioned, red or white sangria, and a limited draft beer select selection. For all you can drink, you would usually expect a water down lower quality beverage, however, that was not the case. The old-fashioned were very well made. The red sangria was decadent and not overly sweet. And the draft beer was a good old draft beer. Caroline was our server. She was absolutely excellent. She was attentive, polite patient with us. Always making sure we were all taken care of. She helped make our meal even better. The decor of this restaurant is very high class. Visually it's very well, appointed with table, linens, cloth, napkins, and cohesive color scheme. With the decor, high-quality drinks and the high-quality food we were more than happy to pay the $70 for all you can eat and drink. I highly recommend this place. I have to make sure to come back sooner than later.

I actually arrived about an hour after everyone else, and I really appreciated that the staff still accommodated me and allowed me to enjoy the full two-hour brunch experience instead of rushing me. That flexibility meant a lot and let me celebrate with my friends without feeling like I had missed out. The buffet itself had plenty to choose from, including fried catfish, made-to-order waffles, macaroni and cheese, fresh fruit, and desserts. I decided to upgrade with the seafood option, which was absolutely worth it. I enjoyed oysters, crab legs, shrimp cocktail, and prime rib, making brunch feel like a true special occasion. My only disappointment was the prime rib. I love mine rare, but each serving I received was more well done than I prefer. It tasted like it had spent a little too much time under the heat lamps before being served. Service was friendly, but it definitely felt like the restaurant was stretched thin. Our server was attentive and kind, but drinks and premium brunch items occasionally went to the wrong table, and there were moments when it seemed difficult to keep track of who had ordered what. To me, this felt less like a service issue and more like a staffing issue. It's a large, beautifully designed restaurant, and it seemed like there simply weren't enough servers for the number of guests. I understand that restaurants are trying to balance staffing and costs, especially with the challenges many businesses in DC are facing right now, but it does affect the guest experience. One of my favorite moments was when the team brought out a birthday cake with a candle and sang to our birthday guest. It was a thoughtful gesture that made the celebration feel even more special. Despite a few hiccups, we left full, happy, and grateful to spend time together. Now that I know what to expect, I'd absolutely come back for another brunch.

The chicken sandwich sliders were delicious, with juicy chicken and a soft biscuit, but the honey drizzle was a little overpowering for my taste. I'd recommend asking for the honey on the side so you can control the sweetness while still enjoying the flavors of the chicken and biscuit. The scrambled eggs were decent, but nothing particularly memorable. They were presented beautifully on a stylish plate, though the taste itself was fairly standard.
