ELOTE CORN FRITTERS and MARYLAND CRAB CAKES
    Angela L.

Came here to celebrate my little sister's birthday since she has been wanting to try this place. I ordered the corn fritters, not sure that's the exact title and the crab cakes and the sangria from the happy hour menu. She ordered the shrimp and grits. Everything tasted pretty good, but would agree it was slow service even though it wasn't busy. Definitely a place to try.

Took a really long time ~ 1 hr to make the food. I think they're overall understaffed. They left a pitcher of water at our table to serve ourselves. Clean and well lit place though. The shrimp and grits is decent flavor but the grits are clumped into a bar. Definitely just take it home, add a bit of butter and cream and mash it back up so it's a creamy texture as opposed to a coagulated block

Haven't been to Bayshore center for a while. Decided on this restaurant at the last minute. It was near the location that a music performance, later on that evening. So between the location, and menu, we took a chance. Glad that we did. Made a 6pm reservation and got right in. The place was about 1/3 full. The place is very spacious, with lots of different areas, and table options. They also have outdoor patio seating, which would be a treat during nice weather. The noise level is good, and allowed us to have a quiet conversation. Our server got to us right away with water and menus. Wasn't interested in a drink, but a hot tea on a cold night was a good choice. The menu had a nice selection of starters, salads, sandwiches and entrees. There were some excellent sounding choices, so I asked our servers for some recommendations, which she was happy (and almost excited) to help with. We decided the Elote Corn Fritters, I got the Mallard Melt (new item), and my date got the Blackened Fish Tacos. The corn fritters arrived after a short wait. They were absolutely amazing! The flavors were bright, spicy, but not hot. The inside texture was both moist and crumbly. A very yummy start. After another short wait, the patty melt and the fish tacos came. Both of these were the right temps, flavorful, and good portions. The garlic toast for the melt was nicely grilled. The pimento cheese, bacon jam, and nashville aioli were also tasty, but they tended to overly blend with each other. Instead of chips, I had ordered the veggie fries, with are pan grilled beans and carrots. That was a nice change for fried chips. The fish tacos were nicely plated, with good portions. Lots of interesting flavors from the avocado cream and hot sauce. It was a very good last minute choice. The menu selection, service and atmosphere were better than I might expect. Would definitely come back again. And for sure, get those tasty Elote Corn Fritters.

I enjoyed the prices on the happy hour menu. The St. Croix Margarita is very sweet, but good if you only plan on having one. The bartender was friendly!

This was my second visit in 10 days. I must say it wasn't quite the same as the first visit. Maybe the server was new, maybe they were shortstaffed I'm not sure, but it wasn't crowded and our table of five felt rushed and almost suggested that we leave by bringing the check without even asking if we wanted another round of drinks or any other food! The corn fritters were kind of dry and not what I remembered less than two weeks ago. I must say the Wally bites were delicious and fresh and lightly breaded. The shrimp tacos were kind of a spicy hot surprise. All I could taste was the heat, but the shrimp were very sizable and tender! My dining companion couldn't even eat hers as They were so spicy. The crabcake was probably also a top favorite as the sangria really hit the spot!

We came back to try again. And yes, just as good as before. We had for appetizers: Chicken Wings with Korean Bbq sauce and Cheese Curds.Drinks were 2 raspberry lemon drop martini, Chardonnay. Main entrees: Meatloaf, Mushroom Pappardelle with chicken, Barramundi Rodrigo, and Salmon New Orleans. Everyone liked their meals. My meatloaf was good. Their meatloaf is more tomato based over the meatloaf while I'm more of gravy on my meatloaf. But the food is good and I'm sure we'll return.a great place for 4 to sit and have a conversation Our server Chaz was great. A great asset to the restaurant.

Overall, nice spot for a date, but not necessarily the most foodie place. Our server was very, overly enthusiastic, spoke superfast, and long. As nice as he was, I felt more like I was listening to my professor going over the semester, then a server going over the menu. He explained that they made everything fresh, in house. Including their bread. I was under wild by their freshly made bread, which came toasted on my pasta dish. It didn't feel as fresh because it had come toasted with burnt spots. They also have a Brandy that the restaurant gets special made for them. This one was really good. Our bartender had to leave due to sickness before starting on our drinks, so our server said that he made the drinks himself. Unfortunately, the bartender would have probably done a better job. Well the drinks that the server made wasn't bad, it was definitely not quite as professional as it could have been. For example, there are certain drinks that should not come with ice, since it's supposed to be shaken. The food is all good. Solid. But not what I would call excellent. Actually, the shrimp and lobster pasta dish I had was excellent. Had this been the only thing I had gotten, I would have raved about it. Very mind though, that this dish was $25. But Hubby had the fish and chips Which was again, good, but just that. Nothing spectacular. And there was pretty much nothing else that my friends had that looked especially exciting. So for the price and the service we received, I'd say the place is solid, but not necessarily my go to. I will go with a group, but not sure if this would be my date place.

Date of visit: January 24, 2025 After a long week, my husband and I wanted nothing more than some relaxing conversation with our closest friends accompanied by good food. Mallard's succeeded on both fronts! Shaun took wonderful care of us, letting us know right at the beginning of the meal that the kitchen was very busy and offered us soup or salad to help pass the time, a wonderful offer that went a long way towards ensuring the entire experience was a five-star one! The gratis soup, by the way, was an excellent clam chowder, served with crackers (as all soups should be), and was quite good. We started with the Daily Bread. Dear reader, I would snatch this loaf from an old lady like Seinfeld it was so good! Partially sliced to make it easier to share, it came with three sides: a pimento cheese, a jam, and a honey butter. I skipped the pimento but the other two somehow managed to elevate the bread, which I didn't think was quite possible. I had the Turkey Club and it was decent, but not amazing. I prefer my clubs to be a bit more warm, especially the bread--though the cranberry bread it was served on was excellent. Everyone does something different with their clubs so I'm not docking them for my personal preference. The side of chips were good, though I would have perished and ascended to the heavens if they had been salt and vinegar chips! Bayshore--really the North Shore in general--has been a restaurant desert, so excited to have Mallard's helping to fill the void and I hope they continue to do great things.

There's been some changes at this location at Bayshore over the years. Decent places but nothing special. Mallards is the most promising of them all. The staff, both times I went, was great. Very friendly. The first time I went, with my wife, I had to step outside multiple times to take calls because of a family emergency. The server couldn't have been nicer about it. The menu has a nice range of options and everything I've had thus far has been excellent. From fish to Nashville hot chicken to clam chowder...all the things we've had were tasty! We live very close to Bayshore, and it's great to have a high quality option so near to our home! Been there twice already and will be back soon!

I've been to Mallards twice, the first time I was thrilled with the service and the food. And the second time months later there was a lot to be desired in both areas. I brought my family thinking the food would be good and most of it was cold and bland. We did like the appetizers- walleye bites and boudin balls. There were some big groups dining at the same time which may have impacted service but either way I was pretty disappointed with the experience.

Mallard's Melt is amazing! Cheesecake is divine! Shawn is a fantastic server! Atmosphere is comfy and inviting!

Went to Mallard's with a friend for the first time and it was really good! We got the seafood campechana as our free app and I ordered the Tennessee hot chicken sandwich with fries. The seafood campechana was super fresh and delicious and my sandwich was flavorful! The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. I'll definitely have to come back to try their other dishes!

Came on a Monday night with a friend. Food: Really like the menu. Lots of diversity to choose from, and the prices are reasonable. We started with a couple of specialty cocktails. I had the Sazerac, and my friend had the OG Old Fashioned. Both were well made, and there was plenty of alcohol in each. For an appetizer, we got the Frogs on the Mound, which, as you can imagine, is 1/2 lb of frog legs on haystack onion rings. I haven't had frog legs in a while, and I thought these were very good. The breading was light, well seasoned, and not overcooked. The haystack onion rings were just okay. They could have been hotter and maybe seasoned (or just salted) a bit more. For our entrees, I got the Blackened Catfish, and he got the Grouper Tacos. Both of these meals were also very good. The blackened fish was the best part of my meal. It was excellently seasoned, cooked to the right temperature, and moist and flaky. Delicious! The collard greens were good, but would have been better with just a bit more pork. More pork is always better. The rice and beans were good too, but the temperature was less than hot. My friend enjoyed his Grouper Tacos, and the bite he shared with me was very good, except for the green peppers. I much prefer orange or yellow peppers, but I realize that's a personal taste issue. The tacos tasted fresh, the fish was tender, and the portions were good. Service: The place was about a quarter full. Even though we weren't in a hurry, the service got off to a bit of a slow start. After getting waters and menus, it took a while for our server to get back to us. I started to worry that this might be an issue for the rest of the evening, so I made a point of getting their attention. After that, things went smoothly. After ordering appetizers and entrees, the food came out in a timely fashion. All the staff we interacted with were helpful and friendly. Thanks, Sarah 1 and Sarah 2 :) Atmosphere: Besides the separate bar area, the dining room is a big open space with lots of four-top tables spread around. Around the walls there are posters, art pieces, and plenty of Mardi Gras beads. I wasn't sure at the time, but there was something a bit cramped about the interior. After looking at the pictures, I think it might have to do with the low, tiled ceiling. (I think this is the first time I have ever mentioned something about a tiled ceiling.) On this night, it was quiet and easy to have a comfortable conversation. Glad that we finally stopped in for a meal. With the exception of the initial service delay and some small issues with a couple of food items, it was a very good meal. Would definitely want to stop back again to try other parts of the menu.

Needless to say, it was crowded and lively, but our table was waiting for us and we were sat immediately. Our server was friendly, attentive, and very helpful with our menu choices, which were limited due to their Madi Gras-only offerings, but also plentiful and varied. My husband decided on the jambalaya, I went with the crawfish étouffée, and we split the roasted Cajun cauliflower as an appetizer. While it's hard for this kind of stew-like, saucy, veggie/sausage/seafood over rice mixtures to present beautifully, everything looked, smelled, and tasted delicious. The jambalaya had a little more of a kick than I prefer, but my husband loved it and my crawfish étouffée had the perfect amount of spice without being spicy. The roasted cauliflower was cooked to perfection and was the perfect way to start the meal. Not pictured is the bananas foster bread pudding that was the perfect way to end it. We both left with extra food to take home and the memory of a wonderful meal and great experience.

Our server was great and the manager came by while we were eating to ask how things were and see if we needed anything. The hush puppies came with a really interesting sauce. The cheese, flavor and texture were great. The chicken meatballs were good also had a nice sauce. I got the 4pc Pressure Fried Chicken sub collard greens for Mac n cheese to share. They nicely split the meal on two separate plates for us. The fried chicken was really good with a delicious crispy breading. The biscuit and Mac n cheese were alright. The Mac n cheese was nothing special at all. The mashed potatoes and gravy were good, potato skins mixed in. Enjoyed the food and variety of options!

It was overall a mixed experience. Food: I had the BBQ Short Rib (R3 on the menu) and while it was flavorful with the rice, the meat was extremely tough (especially with just the butter knife I had to cut) and fatty. The portion size was a bit small for the price as well. Other items on the menu seemed to be a much better value in terms of food volume and cost. Service: Attentive at first, but then nonexistent. We were so busy talking that we didn't know what we wanted and finally all settled on items. It took two staff members to take the order due to some language barriers, but we got through it. During the meal, they came around once for water and then never again, despite hanging around for well over 90 minutes. With a lot of variety and friendly service, this definitely is a great go-to place. My Mom and I came here for a light dinner and ordered the crab cake and mussels appetizers as our entrees. Thinking that wouldn't be enough food, we added the arugula beet salad. Everything came out pretty quickly, and the mussels portion and salad were enormous. Each dish was excellent. The mussels, a recommendation by our helpful server, were especially good - the mussels were cooked perfectly, without an unopened mussel in the bunch, and the white wine-garlic-fennel broth was seasoned well and had the classic flavor I was hoping for. The only miss was that the bread provided was only barely toasted and a little chewy. The salad was a wonderful surprise: dressed properly with a nice vinaigrette, it had toasted pepitas, creamy goat cheese, fennel, and beets that were not overly earthy. My Mom enjoyed her crab cakes, which had a bit of a spicy kick. I wanted a little dessert and chose their Door County cherry ice cream. I would strongly recommend leaving room for it. It had a fantastic, creamy texture, tasting homemade. The ice cream itself had a natural flavor of almonds with a hint of cherry, was studded with dark chocolate and cherry pieces, and topped with a cute fish-shaped cookie. One of the best ice creams I've had. Like the food portions, it came as three big scoops, so it's good for sharing. The atmosphere is casual and fun, though be prepared for a pretty high noise level when it's full - not from music, but from everyone having a great time with friends and family. I'd recommend getting a reservation, and they're conveniently on OpenTable.
