I'm not a regular, but my family has frequented the Maltby Café about once a month for the last five years. I have recently found there is a very very fine line between what many have referred to as cozy, and just overcrowded uncomfortable and weird. Two of my last three visits have been ruined by the cramped quarters. Three visits ago, we had an older gentleman, with a large belly and the need to sit with a foot of clearance between his stomach and the table, nearly bumping into our table. Our group couldn't even sit all the way around our own table. Last time, we were in the back and a large group had pushed several tables together. We were the remaining table and without out enough room to fit into the corner. Our table was pulled out into the middle of the aisle to the bathroom, between the route for the kitchen crew to access storage, and right behind the server's station where we had to duck when the server came in with food for the other group. This last visit was on a Sunday morning. We waited 40 min. for our crummy table. The bill was $70 with no sides and or drinks except for my wife's coffee (sure the portions are large, but so are the prices). That's just too much time and money to take the chance at getting a decent table with enough space to enjoy the food. I'm going to take a little break from the café and find a restaurant with booths. read more

Went mid morning on a Friday and it was packed, but they seated us quickly. I requested another cup for my coffee as the first one had grit around the top, yuck. The second cup came with a clean rim but a dirty handle. Whatever, I wanted coffee. I ordered the bisquits, gravy, eggs and meat. My friend ordered the traditional eggs benedict. Both looked good, but both were luke warm. The gravy flavor was OK as was everything else. We alerted the young lady who was pouring coffee that the food was barely warm and that we weren't going to send it back to the kitchen, but we wanted to let them know. The young lady was very apologetic and said she'd let the manager know about it. Then the waitress came by and we told her the same thing. She said "OH". The manager never came by our table. Now I'm sure she was busy but we sat there another 30 minutes chatting and so there was ample time to swing by and say something. This was the second meal here recently that has been less than the normal quality. Not sure if we'll be back. I at least would like my food to be hot, if not delicious for the prices they are charging. read more

As everyone else always writes, this place is delicious!! All of the staff are so kind and unique (in the best way possible)! The food is phenomenal! The only thing that isn't great is the wait, but it is ALWAYS worth the wait to get some tasty food here! We went at lunchtime on a weekday and waited less than 5 minutes for 2 seats at the counter. Our first visit, and likely only visit based on what we had. First, the cinnamon roll; yes, it's huge and covered in topping sauce, but the warnings we saw posted about nuts in the roll were exaggerated. We saw not one bit of nut, and it could have used some. There were a few raisins, but darn few. We ate half and gave half to the two people sitting beside us. We chose to split a turkey cranberry cream cheese sandwich with a side of potato salad. There's only one choice of bread, very thick cut, and that thick cut makes the sandwich look huge. But, in reality, there's almost nothing between the slices. Literally a tiny sandwich wrapped between huge slices of bread. The potato salad was oddly gray in color and verrrry wet. Tasted OK, but not appetizing. All in all, we regretted not ordering a breakfast, as all the ones we saw pass by looked good. Hard to screw up eggs, bacon, pancakes. Unlikely we'll make the drive to go back here. read more

First brunch since coming back to the States. It was awesome! You can smell cinnamon rolls from the parking lot, and when you come in, the place is packed ( which is a good thing for business). We arrived early and were seated reasonably quickly but I can see that this place gets crowded. Its reputation is stellar, a legend in its own time. We each had a different breakfast, I tried the chicken fried steak. Hard to believe it's made it all the way to Seattle! The steak was good, nice crispy batter around it also, the sausage gravy on top was decent and the eggs over easy were, what can I say, eggs. Served with oven potatoes or whatever they called them, almost like overgrown french fries. They were a little greasy but good enough. Service was great, coffee kept coming, which is always a plus. I really love this place!! It has a lot of old school character from the little school like building it's in to all the exposed beams. The food is great and the portions are huge!! My favorite is their bread fruit French toast with blackberries and strawberries on top....mmmm mmmm mmm!!! Definite five-star review. I've now been here a couple times...and will keep coming back. The food is delicious, home-style cooking. My favorite so far is the Country Scramble. And of course the cinnamon roll. But back to the main plate, you get so much on your plate. Its an oval plate and completely covered with food. The scrambled eggs are full of sausages and mushrooms, and covered in Tillamook cheddar. The home fries (house potatoes) have so much flavor in them...you can taste the good flavors of the other foods in them. I get the house made toast. Very good, but you just get one slice. Bread this good, you should get at least two slices. That being said, it doesnt take away from the stars. Just makes you want more on your next visit. Others at my table had the reuben, biscuits and gravy, and french toast with berries and creme fraiche. I tried the reuben, hands down the second best reuben ive had in the greater seattle area. The only thing that could make it equal to the best is if they used rye bread instead of the house bread. My son said best biscuits and gravy ever, and my friends daughter would order the french toast for the creme fraiche alone. So...well played Maltby Cafe. Absolutely zero complaints at our table about the food or the service. The servers are super friendly and always there for refills or whatever is needed. The place is always super packed, but they handle it well considering how stressful it can be. Oh yeah, and don't forget to try the preserves that comes with toast. I just eat it with a spoon. So good. The place is busy, but the longest I've waited is 30 minutes. Not bad. Im sure its been longer at times, but I dont think that will change my future review. Third time here and I still don't understand what the all hoopla is about this place! Came here for lunch and had the club sandwich and potato salad. Had one single slice of turkey and the rest was filler. It really had no great flavor. The potato salad was more like mayo soup. The kids each had the kid's pancake which was rubbery. One kids pancake and one slice of bacon is sooo not worth the $6.99 charged. Won't be back! read more

Are you an obese white woman with beauty-parlor hair who follows and agrees with reviews from the Weekly and CitySearch? If yes to any of the above you'll love Maltby Cafe. First of all, know that the cafe is in the basement of the church or fraternal hall or whatever it is so the ceiling is low and natural light minimal. Although called a cafe none of the lunch choices are under $10 so with a beverage and tip plan on spending about $20 per person. Portion sizes, however, are consistent with prices so you can plan on taking home (or leaving to waste) one half of what you ordered, Cheesecake Factory or Claim Jumper style. In addition to high reviews from the Weekly and CitySearch (stickers proudly adorn the doors) they apparently have won local radio station KISS 101.5's breakfast contest. I imagine that breakfasts include a huge portion of potatoes and other starches in addition to about three days' worth of saturated fat and calories. The food? Greasy, salty, carby. Service? OK, with some cute girls who appeared to have been tanning at the local sun-tan salon. Atmosphere? Claustrophobic. read more

I've heard about the Café several times in my few years living in Monroe. I've planned to eat there but never have. I stopped in today on my way home from Seattle, I figured it was time. The wait was a little long, but there were a lot of people there. Man, was it worth the wait. Hands-down the best omelet I've ever eaten. I don't like tomatoes and that was no problem. The waitress even recommended adding jalapeños and sour cream (the way she likes it). So I took her suggestion. Oh man, was it good. Even with as busy as it was all of the wait staff had smiles on their faces. And customer service was top priority. When my coffee was almost empty they'd come fill it and the same for my orange juice. The Maltby café is now at the top of of my favorites list. read more

Wow, from the shining reviews here on yelp and from locals, I was expecting big things from Maltby cafe. I have to say, I was somewhat disappointed: 1. Selection/offerings-- Just Okay. Not too many inventive or drool-worthy items on the menu, which usually accompanies a restaurant with raving reviews. 2. Price-- Most brunch entrees are over $10, which seems expensive to me. I had a Mexican-inspired scramble with tortilla, peppers, and topped with a few dollops of sour cream. It came with potatoes and bread for $12. 3. Service-- shoddy. Our waitress was nice and all, but she didn't welcome us and asked for our order a few minutes after we were seated. She only talked to us twice-- for our order and to give us our bill (someone else brought out the food). I also found it strange that she put our bill down immediately after our food was served. 4. Taste- Like I mentioned above, it's mediocre. Not bad, but not amazing like others seem to think.... in my opinion. Just, not a lot of flavor, I guess? Bland/boring. I don't know, maybe we hit the cafe on an off day. It's pretty close to home, so we'll probably give it another shot before I decide that Brown Bag is my definite favorite (at this point, I'd rather have the BB over MC). read more

WORST EXPERIENCE!!! My family and I went to the Maltby this morning. After only waiting about 20 minutes (which is not horrible for this place...I have waited for an hour before)...it took us FOREVER for a server to come to our table. No water, no coffee, no milk for my children. I hate nothing more then having to find someone to help us and take our order!!! The eggs Benedict is pretty good...way over priced, but what I usually order, but I HAVE to have my eggs poached hard. I asked for that, and actually our server repeated it back to me. When the breakfast finally arrived...the plate was placed in front of me...and I could tell right away, that my eggs were not poached hard, and they were a jiggling mess! Again..having to wait awhile for the server to come back, I had to sent the order back. In the meantime..my family all got their food and finished by the time my corrected meal arrived! Ugh. By that time, I had lost my appetite...my children were restless and we needed to go. Was there an offer to comp my meal??? No way! You would think if you have an order wrong and make a customer wait an extra 15 minutes, starving, and watching everyone else eat, then have to eat fast... the offer would have been nice and proper. For the wait times, horrible service and ok food, we will not go back! There are many other breakfast spots in the area that are cheaper, better service, better food, and care a heck of a lot more about their customers than this place!! read more

Maltby Cafe is a great little family owned business that is hidden away from the city. I went here this morning with my girlfriend as well as another couple we occasionally dine with for breakfast. As usual, this place was the place to be for the morning. We had a 40 minute wait but in my opinion was well worth it. It's a moderate sized place with about 15 tables. Today we started off with their well known cinnamon roll which was much more than enough to split between the four of us and we even took some to-go! Between the four of us, we got the country scramble, eggs Benedict, and the fruit filled Swedish pancakes. The country scramble was as expected, fluffy eggs with onions, mushrooms, and cheese to top it off. I didn't try the eggs Benedict as I was so full but make sure to check out Lilly T's profile as I'm sure she'll have a review of our experience here soon. The Swedish pancakes though, that was simply amazing. I am not a pancake lover at all, but this was absolutely delicious! To me, it was comparable to a crepe filled with fresh fruit. I really recommend that this is considered should you make a visit to Maltby's. One thing that people should know is that they don't have hash browns here. Instead they have country fried red potatoes that are diced. They are quite tasty if I might say so myself. Only thing I'd recommend is that you keep in mind that there is usually a wait, especially weekend mornings. Waits range from 15 minutes to an hour depending on the time and day. read more

We heard Maltby's was the best breakfast in the state, so we decided to stop here on our way to hike at Wallace Falls. Big mistake. I picked at my omelette, which reminded me of why I dislike many diners: You get twice the portions for half the quality. I could barely bite through one of my potatoes, which were flavorless and undercooked. Their only standout was the biscuit, a tower of fluff that came with raspberry freezer jam. I rarely eat baked goods, but I figured I could use a few carbohydrates. How bad could it be? Real bad. Baked-with-lard bad. That thing made me so viciously sick that I could not finish the hike. It ruined my entire day. It isn't just the food that disappointed, either. The vibe was less friendly diner and more local has-been. Sure, there's some celebrity memorabilia on the walls, but the dingy dining area had all the charm of a high school cafeteria. Even though this is Washington, the staff covered their tattoos with bandaids. The effect was far unseemlier than the tattoos themselves could possibly be. We also couldn't figure out why all the women were wearing skirts. Seems like an odd dress code for this part of the country. In short, if you have intestines of steel, don't mind eating junk food for breakfast, and love big, cheap portions, then maybe Maltby's will satisfy. The Maltby Cafe is now our go to place for breakfast! After yelping the area we live in and not being excited about returning to the places nearby, waiting 30 minutes and paying high prices for just okay food or large quantities of low priced greasy food, I decided we would return here. On a drizzly Memorial Day weekend Sunday morning, we knew we would have a wait regardless where we went. Last visit to Maltby Cafe was a great experience that was worth having to wait for. So we drove 15 miles to Snohomish. Arriving at 10:00 to a busy parking lot and busier waiting area, we turned in our name and sat down. They asked for my last name as they already had two other Jims on their clipboard! 30 short minutes later we were taken to our table and perused the breakfast/lunch menu while enjoying some really good coffee. The menu item descriptions all included the quality ingredients like Tillamook Cheddar cheese, locally made sausage and fresh baked goods. I was torn between the Chile Cheese and onion omelet or The godfather Omelet which was so large, I enjoyed for two meals last visit. This large place was hopping (read slammed) with many families enjoying the basement setting and retro decor of an old building. When our attentive waitress Keesha arrived to take our order, I spontaneously changed my mind (must have some kind of subliminal message) and ordered the Italian platter which was 2 links of perfectly seasoned Italian sausage, scrambled eggs cooked just right and the best huge home style biscuit smothered with sausage gravy I have ever tasted! (bear in mind I lived and traveled in the south for 20+ years and consumed enough biscuits and gravy to make my family doctor discuss clogged arteries and high cholesterol with me! ( I did add a lot of pepper though) Yes, I cleaned my plate like my mother taught me (there are starving children in China you know) and my wife enjoyed her roughneck platter that consisted of 2 over easy fried eggs, hash browns with onions and chopped pieces of thick cut bacon all mixed together. (Her plate was also picked clean and maybe licked BTW) Yes, we will be back sooner than later and we also took home one of their famous huge cinnamon rolls to share for Memorial day breakfast. Don't let the wait deter you. You can sit sooner if you agree to a counter seat. The seating area is large and Maltby Cafe moves a lot of satisfied people in and out through their doors. OK, it takes quite a bit to drag my ass out of bed for a drive from Seattle to Snohomish on a Saturday morning, but after a drive through the country, I was rewarded with one of the best breakfasts in the area. Maltby Cafe is famous for their cinnamon rolls and rightfully so. A roll about the size of my head was big enough to split four ways and swimming in frosting. The scramble are hearty, and the served with plenty of red-skin potatoes. The Swedish pancakes, however, were disappointing, as they were on the heavy side. The thick-sliced bacon, though, was filling and full of flavor. There is also a lunch menu, which I will have to try later, but with breakfast this good, I may not get to it for awhile. read more

30 of us "Active Older Adults" from a YMCA had lunch here today. Food was wonderful, huge portions, such great choices, SOOOO good! I was most impressed with our waitress, Toni-- the 30 of us asked for separate checks. She was efficient, cheerful and so good at what she did! Kudos to not only Toni, but the Kitchen, for all of our 30 entrees came out as we had ordered them (mayo on the side, sunny side up, medium rare, etc.), hot, and within a very short time of each other.. no one had to wait long. Great staff! And then... I paid my bill with cash and said "Keep the change". I was approached by another sweet gal employee (didn't get her name, darn) who actually gave me my money back and said I had way overpaid-- yes one of my bills was a $20 rather than a $10 as I had intended, so did I want to rethink how much cash I was paying? How honest and wonderful! We came here after our visit to Flower World.. a wonderful day. Maltby Café has great staff (!!!!!), is so cute, charming and nice, and the food is really good. The Cinnamon rolls are superb-- and I swear they weigh 2 pounds each! They are HUGE and worth trying (split it with at least 1 other person). Ask for a "To Go" container if you need it (you will!)-- portions are so big, almost everyone walks out with leftovers! Only bummer (not the cafe's fault)-- the next door gift and antique shops were CLOSED.. only open Thurs. to Sunday. Need to come back to explore them. read more

A friend recommended this place. We showed up around noon on a Thursday. Place was packed, had to wait about five minutes for a table. Make sure you come with an appetite! We started with a cinnamon roll. They come out hot and they are HUGE. 3 of us could not finish it. We also ordered a house omelette and buttermilk pancakes. Everything was great! Very large portions, barely made a dent in our food. Prices seemed high at first but for the amount of food they serve it wasn't so bad. Staff was very friendly and our water and coffee were always full. We may come back for lunch another day before we leave town. read more

Ah, Oldee Timey. Why are we so fond of you? Nostalgia for things we never had even. Can we have nostalgia for things we never knew? We sure like to think we can. Simpler times and all that. The simple goodness of simpler-timed, oldee fashioned cooking. Grandma's cooking. And all of the supposed nostalgic comfort that comes with this grandma of our collective imagination. She's swell. Pinafored and always happy to see you. And she gives you the simplest but bestest food. All sticky to your ribs and whatnot. It warms your cockles just thinking about it. And so it happened that on this past rain-slushy Sunday Kitten and I decided to embark on a breakfast adventure. At 2pm. Because well... well never you mind because why exactly. But we knew the score. First get cold and wet from walking to the car, and then ride through the rain-slush to out across the way. This'll put us in the right spirit. Provide the necessary precursor for the warm comfort of grandma-like, oldee timey goodness. In out of the cold. Sure we forced ourselves to get cold so that we could come it out of it and be thus comforted, but that's beside the point. And so we pull up to the Maltby Cafe. But I sigh reluctantly. Kitten turns to me, and before she speaks that tentative, oh-no-what that sometimes precedes my sobering doses of piss-on-your-parade realism (cynicism to you westcoasters), I say, "um... high end Johnny Rockets." Kitten hates Johnny Rockets. She looks a little disappointed. But the wonderful thing about Kitten is that she'll often pay no notice to me, cast thoughts of good and bad aside, and careen, with alacrity, headlong into whatever it is anyway. Still, feeling a little bad for my instinctive assessment, I hasten to add... "I'm willing to be wrong... could be wrong." I'm hardly ever wrong. But don't get me wrong either. I mean all the trappings of warm oldee timey, grandma cooking in a pinafore goodness were there. Old gas station signs. Charming bottom of the Olde General Store feel. Inside.... Grandma's Country Kitchen. And that's how I knew. Sadly this was not the genuine old kind. Was the new kind that pretends to be the old kind. A debate may have happened at some point as to whether or not to actually call it Grandma's Country Kitchen. And possibly whether or not to spell Kountry -- like that. Anyway.... after we've been seated among all of the self-consciously shabby-chic, red-green christmasy, poinsettia-mad finery... "no, no, still could be good." Chicken-fried Steak. People had mentioned it's goodness here at the Maltby Cafe. I've lived in the south. I'm a connoisseur of CfS, if one is so shameless as to admit such a thing. And I'm not. If it's on the menu I always have it. And so it went. Kitten got a hot chocolate to warm her up. It was from a packet. Both being brought up out of cans and packets we could taste Swiss Miss anywhere. It did match the decor though. What with all of the whipped cream and red and green christmas sprinkles plopped on top as if it'd been passed through Blitzen himself, but that's the best you could say for it. And that, in case you're not paying attention, isn't that good. And it was luke warm. Swiss Miss and tap water? Surely a high dollar Kountry Kitchen place like this can splurge for the boiled kind of water? When I got my food, I was confused. Shouldn't my steak be chewy and my biscuit soft? not the other way around? Fried spongy chuckburger laden with meat tenderizer. Ok gravy with hints of some sausage product in it. Over-poached eggs. Kitten had some ham and onion and potato mixture. I think it was better. At least it didn't repeat on me for the rest of the day. Nidorous, spongy-chuckburger belches. The portions were hefty. But who wants a hefty lot of bleh, shrug and smellburps? We *did* experience true, authentic oldee timey though: Lots of kids work there. Nice kids. The kind of kids from decent middle / upper middle class families lured to the Maltby environs by the promise of that yesteryear, small, hometown feel. The polite and attentive girl serving us forgot my biscuit. After I inquired as to its whereabouts she told me cheerfully, without hesitation or embarrassment, blithely honest to her core... "oh, it's in the microwave." Bless her heart. And that (god no, not the food), that is what in the end served to warm me up. read more

Let me start by saying I came here after a trail run and was STARVING! We all opted for lunch but the breakfast looked amazing! While I had a cup of coffee to warm me up my eye got caught on the cinnamon bun!!!! MANNNN THAT THING IS HUGE AND SMELLS FANTASTIC! I did not get it, but I had dreams about it that night. I got a Reuben with potato salad as my side. The bread was fantastic as was the potato salad! Lots of dill flavored. I tried the breakfast potatoes as well, and those were good too! Quiet, Quaint, and Quite Delish. (I was attempting alliteration, but there are only so many "Q" words out there). Gotten weekend brunch here a handful of times and I've always left full and happy. If you're willing to make the drive out to Snohomish and wait a little while for a table (my wait usually ends up being roughly 20-40 mins @ approx. 11am on Saturdays), you will feel the same way. The portion sizes are enormous for the cost. I'm an omelet fan and they have a lot of options to choose from. My personal favorite is The Godfather. Lots of fresh, greasy, delicious Italian ingredients. I should note that in this review, "greasy" is written with a positive connotation and a lot of love. This is a diner that gives you down-home-cookin'. You're not here for health food. Leave your quinoa and kale chips at home! They have plenty of savory choices (omelets and scrambles) and they have sweet options (fruit waffles and fruit filled swedish pancakes with creme fraiche) as well. I usually don't expect fantastic service at a diner, but this place is pretty good, if not great. Coffee mug is always full and the staff maintains a friendly, positive attitude in spite of having to start work at 7AM on a Saturday. The cinnamon rolls are sweet, ginormous, and they make them fresh daily. I would recommend that you get one, but get it to go. If you try to eat it before your meal, you will be taking the vast majority of your entree home. I made that mistake a couple visits ago... but on the plus side, I had a filling helping of omelet and potatoes for dinner that night! Overall, this is one of the best hangover-curing breakfasts I have ever found. It's so good, in fact, that I would recommend it even if you don't have a hangover! read more

I seriously don't have any bad things to say about this place. I came on Sunday morning at 11am expecting a long wait, so when they said 45min, I couldn't complain. They cycle people through really fast and efficiently though! The food is GREAT! I got the 3-eggs Benedict and it kicked my butt - instead of using muffins, they use biscuits, which make it even more hearty.They serve these red-potato sides with them and they're cooked/seasoned to perfection (soft but crispy at parts, and full of flavor)! The portions are friggin giant too; so if you come here with someone and don't want leftovers, DEFINITELY share it, it'll be plenty of food. My bf got The God Father and was completely loving it. It reminded me of a pizza since it was topped with marinara. We also got the cinnamon roll that everyone was raving about and it's crazy big and yummy. We came in on a Monday around 11:30 and it was pretty crowded. Heard the wait gets crazy on the weekends but we were seated right away. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing but didn't really feel like breakfast so got a cup or soup it was chicken and veggie and the Turkey club. Overall both items were okay. Nothing wrong with them but Not amazing either. The soup was good but the chicken in it was pretty dry. The sandwich was ok and had flavor because of the bacon and avocado. The Turkey in it was flavorless. The service and decor are also not memorable. So I would go back if I was near by and in the mood for breakfast but won't go out of my way. read more

After hearing all the rave about this place for years I figured I would try it out myself a few months ago after golfing when I was really hungry It was not busy at all because it was really late morning around 11 or 12 I was seated pretty promptly and there appeared to be multiple staff on hand because I made eye contact with at least four or five different waitresses and sat at my table by myself for at least close to 15 minutes before someone even came over and greeted me at my table? I was well beyond the point that I should've just got up and left after not being served a glass of water asked if I wanted a cup of coffee a high hello I'll be right with you sir absolutely no greeting or not which meant that I was even there for an honest to goodness 15 minutes and I was seated in the closest table to the bar in the cash register checkout area so I was quite visible I had to actually walk to the cash register and introduce myself and mention to all the staff that was standing there doing absolutely nothing except talking amongst themselves that I would like some breakfast and I've been seated for 15 minutes and haven't even been brought a cuppa coffee or glass of water My hunger got the best of me so I sat down and ordered breakfast it was nothing special eggs Benedict something I would probably give the breakfast 2 stars but with absolute lack of service I received is zero stars I absolutely would never go back even if I knew my meal would be free it was one and done probably the worst experience I've ever had walking into a place in being seated and absolutely ignored by every single person that work there read more

The reviews must be off. The staff were slobby, arrogant, and very unhelpful. I will say our waitress was pleasant but the rest of the staff were rude. They told us our wait would be 20 minutes, it was 50. The food took another 30 minutes, it was bland, and lacked creativity. There was poor quality but high quantity so if you want a lot of bland cheap food eat here. I have lived in WA for ten years and people have raved about this place the entire time, each time I have gone it has been very lousy. They are very hard to do business with. There are many inconsistencies between their online ordering menu and their posted menu. Also, they don't answer the phone, its on an answering machine. Only way to get answers is show up in person, then the wait times are reportedly very long. Not answering the phone is fatal! It could clear up all the questions and inconsistencies. read more

Oh, dear. After having been here several times and had wonderful food in the past, I'm afraid things have changed. My husband and I were excited to go back, despite the long drive from Seattle. We both fondly remembered their food, and especially their cinnamon rolls. Maybe it was an off day for them, I don't know. There certainly were plenty of people, even on a Wednesday - though thankfully, no wait like there is on the weekends. But the food... YUK! I had the biscuits & gravy with fried eggs & links. My husband had the chicken fried steak with potatoes, fried eggs, and gravy. The biscuits tasted like something out of a can, as did the gravy. The links & eggs were fine - but those are pretty hard to screw up. I will say my fresh-squeezed OJ was delish, as was the coffee. According to my husband, the chicken fried steak was so tough that he had a hard time cutting it, even with a serrated knife. The potatoes, which I tried too, were pretty greasy, and he had the same meh gravy. :( What can I say? We were SO disappointed! Despite the bad meal, we took home a cinnamon roll. We were certain that they'd never mess up the main item they are famous for. We were wrong. It was somewhat dry, and the almond flavored icing, which used to make my legs weak, was now so sweet that my teeth hurt. We didn't even finish it. At least 25% of it went into the garbage. The service was okay, but not as attentive as it could've been. -Except for the coffee refills. But, as someone who tweaks their coffee with cream & sweetner, I hate it when the servers just refill my cup without asking. (I just got it fixed perfect!) So, there you have it. Please, don't waste your time driving up here, or waiting an hour + for a table, when there's so many great breakfast places in Seattle! Go to the Hi Life in Ballard, or even the 'ol Shanty Cafe (they have fabulous waffles, and the best chicken fried steak). Sorry, Maltby. We won't be dining with you again. I have been to Maltby Cafe six or seven times and each time I have expected them to be better, to show me why they get so many awards and raves. I guess the only possible explanation is the love of Big Food in this country. Now don't get me wrong, I like Big Food, if done well. This isn't. The famous cinnamon rolls are big, doughy, sticky, but not somehow moist enough. Last time I had one (one quarter of one to be precise), I swear it expanded in my stomach like one of those grow-a-dinosaur things. The breakfast scrambles are big, thanks in large part to the pile of indifferently cooked and often salty-as-heck potatoes. The eggs are usually prepared to order but at least twice in six or seven visits I experienced over- or under-cooked eggs. In a place that specializes in eggs I expect them cooked to order. The omelets are big, and to my taste overcooked and somewhat leathery. The potatoes are usually disappointing. I think they have to cook them in a huge pile on the grill, which makes them more steamed than fried. The only thing I've always enjoyed is the coffee. Good, strong, served in a proper thick ceramic mug so it stays hot for a while. That, however, is not enough to take me back to this place. The homemade bread is usually good, but sometimes arrives cold and soggy with butter. I wish that I could agree with the hordes of fans, at least then I wouldn't feel stupid for going back over and over again - especially since the wait is often long. read more
