Mamajuana was absolutely amazing!! My sister and I went after going to the Nutcracker Ballet at the Wortham Theatre. We were starving so we took advantage of their HH menu and got the oxtails croquettes which were delicious! Even had Moro de guandules (rice and peas) in them. The mixed skewers were seasoned so well and full of flavors!!! The empanadas were my least favorite but still flavorful. We are Dominican so I was expecting more of a traditional Dominican empanadas but they were still great. My main dish was the red snapper bites and OMG!!!! I felt like I was back home in DR. Tasted like it was straight out of Boca Chica. IYKYK!! It was already deboned into fish nuggets and it came with some perfectly fried tostones (plantains) wow! So good! My sister had the shrimp/lobster yucafongo and it was delicious!! I cannot wait to go back and try other dishes. I had their margaritas and they were amazing! You can tell they make their own margarita mix and not use a store bought one. Oh and the coconut tres leche, TO DIE FOR!!! We didn't even get a chance to take a picture! Thought we would try out the new place since we live in the building. We stopped in for lunch. I understand that this is not a hamburger joint. However the hamburger was most disappointing. The meat tasted and seemed like a pressed frozen patty, the fries were just fries. I expected a "wow" meal based off the atmosphere. The atmosphere is nice and clean. The menus are on tablets so it's easy to navigate. Its surprising that they do not offer any type of downtown resident discounts like most other places in the area. At least offer Happy Hour all day. Something.... to draw locals back. Also note that they run your card for $50 (and do not tell you until you pay). If I could I would give this a zero. I can't speak on the food because I never been there, but it was bad business. A family friend made reservation for his birthday dinner. They received an email the day before confirming the reservation. People from the party showed up and was told by someone who didn't work there that it was closed. If your idea of fun is dining in an establishment where other guests may start dancing randomly in between tables then this is your place. Some of the best vibes in the city. Maybe the best burger in town. Only complaint is the meat, though perfectly cooked, has consistently been underseasoned. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic burger and easily fixed with a dash of salt and pepper. Mamajuana's has excellent service too btw if not a little slow. First floor of the historic Rice Hotel, this is about as "Houston" a vibe as one can get. Highly recommended. read more

However when we ordered the appetizer if I had to give it another rating, I'd only give it maybe 2 1/2 stars the food was dry. It looked appetizing, but that was about it. It was all looks no taste sauce was bland, but the service there was immaculate so for that definitely stop in if you're looking for a beautiful place to have a drink but the food you may want to save your appetite for somewhere else but for ambience in-service definitely an A+ experience. read more

Came here pre-theatre for drinks and their signature mamajuana sushi roll. The bar manager helped me create a drink that was like a gin fizz (off menu) which I enjoyed. Their signature roll is fried in tempura and quite tasty and filling. There is a speakeasy behind a painting near the restrooms, but it doesn't open til closer to 8pm. read more

Refreshing place much needed in the downtown area. Had a reservation for 8pm on a Friday night, and I was seated quickly. Staff/managers were friendly. We started off with the empanada trio, it was good, nothing crazy. For my main I ordered the Yucafongo and it was really good with the creole sauce. My friend ordered the mofongo and we were surprised that it could have been a little better-- but we asked for some creole sauce to top it off and give it more flavor. The desserts were really good. We appreciated the manager asking for feedback on the dishes and experience towards the end of our visit. I think that is super important. DJ started spinning around 10pm. The set up of the entire restaurant is cool --as you have a huge bar to the right upon entrance and tables to the left for intimate dining. I did hear they have a speakeasy in which we did not get to see but overall I enjoyed it. Nice job. Valet parking, street parking and a garage is available nearby. read more

There was a fee on my bill and no one elses and when I asked the server said "oh well it must be something with your card" If he didn't know he needed to ask and find out. Saturday around 1:00 P.m. for a birthday celebration. The food was hit or miss. I had the stuffed snapper and ended up with the snapper head and bones. The stuff was white rice, frozen shrimp calamari rings, and an orange sauce that overpowered the seafood flavors. The snapper meat was missing; it seems the filet was used for another dish for someone else. We also ordered the Churrasco, which was delicious; the mofongo with Churrasco was also good, and the oxtails were on point. The meat empanadas were bland from the appetizer selection; the small mofongo samples were dry, frozen, and tasteless. The service was good until the waitress didn't disclose that 18% was already included in the bill and was asking for more. I hosted my wife's surprise birthday party with about 50 people in the speakeasy room at Mamajuana and it was amazing.  I had another venue cancel on me close to the date of the party, and Mamajuana helped us out on short notice.  Paul, the owner, was great to work with and extremely responsive.  Wonderful atmosphere and food.  We actually liked it so much, we came back for dinner the following night (the oxtail fettuccine was fabulous).  I couldn't recommend this place more highly! read more

1st the valet service is great. The ambiance is beautiful and the dj was really good. Our waiter kept coming to our table every 2 mins making us feel rushed and the restaurant was empty. We ordered the oxtail balls and had to send them back because they were ice cold in the middle. I ordered the whole fried snapper and was pissed when it arrived at the table because it looked and taste like it was fried in old grease. I sent it back and the waiter came out and said the head chef is standing on this dish and will not recook it. I said well tell the head chef to eat it and give me my bills so we can pay for our drinks and leave drinks were very good. Our bill was $114 we order the mamajuana roll and 4 margaritas. You see what's wrong with these restaurants is they want to also be a club and can't get the food part right....they need to pick a side and stick to it. Made brunch reservations to celebrate my birthday with my family that was visiting from out of town. This was our first time at this Mamajuanas location. I would like to include that we are originally from the northeast so we have been to all the Mamajuana restaurants in Jersey and New York. Because of this, we had a level of expectation. Upon arriving we were met by two individuals, a young lady and a man. The man immediately walked us to our table and shared that he would be our waiter. From the moment we were seated to the end of our dining, our waiter experience was not good! Our waiter seemed upset, unhappy and melancholy. My dad asked him if he was okay and my mom jokingly tried to address it as well but nothing changed. Thinking it was a language barrier I shared that we were Spanish speaking but that also had no impact on the way our waiter interacted with us. When he gave the menu, he just simply said "Do you want anything to drink?" No introduction, no small overview of the restaurant, no recommendations, nothing. It was clear that the waiter had zero training because he didn't follow the typical waiter/ress fanfare. Our waiter was so dry that I refused to even share that it was my birthday so he wouldn't sing to me with such negative energy. I do want to share that the restaurant itself was nice inside, we were able to see the speakeasy room which seemed like it would be a cool experience. The brunch food was good, to start we had the empanada trio and mixed skewers followed by the tres golpe, the steak and eggs and my kids had the red velvet waffle. Our only food complain is that a kids menu does not exist so we ordered the red velvet waffles without the chicken for our kids and were charged regular price for them. I really want to recommend this restaurant to others but based on our service experience I am having a hard time doing that. I hope to one day return but I really hope to have a different waiter. read more
