1st the valet service is great. The ambiance is beautiful and the dj was really good. Our waiter kept coming to our table every 2 mins making us feel rushed and the restaurant was empty. We ordered the oxtail balls and had to send them back because they were ice cold in the middle. I ordered the whole fried snapper and was pissed when it arrived at the table because it looked and taste like it was fried in old grease. I sent it back and the waiter came out and said the head chef is standing on this dish and will not recook it. I said well tell the head chef to eat it and give me my bills so we can pay for our drinks and leave drinks were very good. Our bill was $114 we order the mamajuana roll and 4 margaritas. You see what's wrong with these restaurants is they want to also be a club and can't get the food part right....they need to pick a side and stick to it. Made brunch reservations to celebrate my birthday with my family that was visiting from out of town. This was our first time at this Mamajuanas location. I would like to include that we are originally from the northeast so we have been to all the Mamajuana restaurants in Jersey and New York. Because of this, we had a level of expectation. Upon arriving we were met by two individuals, a young lady and a man. The man immediately walked us to our table and shared that he would be our waiter. From the moment we were seated to the end of our dining, our waiter experience was not good! Our waiter seemed upset, unhappy and melancholy. My dad asked him if he was okay and my mom jokingly tried to address it as well but nothing changed. Thinking it was a language barrier I shared that we were Spanish speaking but that also had no impact on the way our waiter interacted with us. When he gave the menu, he just simply said "Do you want anything to drink?" No introduction, no small overview of the restaurant, no recommendations, nothing. It was clear that the waiter had zero training because he didn't follow the typical waiter/ress fanfare. Our waiter was so dry that I refused to even share that it was my birthday so he wouldn't sing to me with such negative energy. I do want to share that the restaurant itself was nice inside, we were able to see the speakeasy room which seemed like it would be a cool experience. The brunch food was good, to start we had the empanada trio and mixed skewers followed by the tres golpe, the steak and eggs and my kids had the red velvet waffle. Our only food complain is that a kids menu does not exist so we ordered the red velvet waffles without the chicken for our kids and were charged regular price for them. I really want to recommend this restaurant to others but based on our service experience I am having a hard time doing that. We were really looking forward to trying Mamajuana Cafe but it was a very disappointing experience. Went for Valentine's Day dinner and none of their popular items such as the oxtail pasta or the red snapper were available. We were tempted to leave when we saw the set menu but decided to stick it out. The appetizers were nothing memorable. Had the steak with risotto and the surf and turf for the main course. It was the saddest surf and turf ever, and the steak on the risotto was too rare for our liking. Desserts were just ok. The other items on their regular menu that we did not get to try might be good but considering the bill for two people was $250+ for bland food that barely filled us up and without any drinks, we're not willing to return. Atmosphere is absolutely beautiful! Really does make you feel like you were in the Dominican Republic. The music was playing in the background. The staff was very nice. What a fantastic new addition to the downtown bar/restaurant scene. We visited for cocktails and had a fantastic experience. The bartender was incredibly friendly and skilled. Drinks were delicious. Vibe is really great. It was too early for it to be open but there is a secret bar/speakeasy space the staff showed us that looks super fun (see video clip). We had a small issue with our tab and the manager immediately addressed it in an efficient and gracious manner. We had tickets for a ballet last Sunday at 6:30 so we made reservations for 4:00, their opening time. No crowd (inside or outside!). The service was great and friendly. The atmosphere is inviting. We ordered to share: Tuna Tartar, pork shoulder, vegetables and dinner salad. All of the food was tasty and the pork shoulder serving size very generous! The staff was very attentive and caring, serving with a smile and quite prompt. A quick tour of the speak easy left us longing to visit again and enjoy this little hideout. Being new, they are learning and developing and I'm sure will continue to morph in to the most wonderful establishment. While we visited, there was no music, which is just fine with me as restaurant/bar music is usually too loud, and we were able to have wonderful conversation. Overall and great place to eat although just a tad on the pricey side. We don't get downtown often but we will visit Mamajuana Cafe again when in the area! read more

Stopped into this restaurant recently for an early dinner before my movie outing. I had seen it on Instagram and thought I would give it a try. The music, the vibes and the food were fantastic! I had the empanadas as my appetizer and the Churrasco as my entree, I thoroughly enjoyed the flavors of each dish. My food order was not brought to me until others at my table were already done with their food and then the waitress was not attentive to me at all. Also i never got a happy birthday singing or no celebration. It was bad service and my meal was cold when brought out. I was not happy at all with the service. The experience was not like i thought it would be. I didnt even get anyone singing me happy birthday and then gratuity was already added to my ticket without lowering it for bad service. I've been to the one in NJ before. I liked that one better because the music was more dance oriented and they had a brunch buffet. The one downtown Houston was overpriced and limited on food options. The mimosas made my head hurt and I threw up my oxtail fettuccine. My server had really bad breath, I felt soo uncomfortable. Gratuity is included so there's that. The bathroom area was big and lovely to take photos in. Won't be back but it was worth a shot. All franchises can't get it right. read more

But they just don't have the creativity in the kitchen to do justice to their concept. It is like Caribbean food cooked for white tourists from New Hampshire... This is Texas. We're not afraid of a little flavor in our food! And if you're going to put SHRIMP in your Mamajuana rolls... take off the TAILS first! It's kind of disgusting to bite into one and get a whole bunch of shrimp tail... Moreover, IF you're going to serve such bland food, at least get some proper Caribbean hot sauces and leave them on the tables. It would make a huge difference. read more

As New Yorkers, we were excited to come here. We were running late for our reservation and when we showed up 75% of the tables were empty. The hostess (who was not at all friendly) just told us we were late and that we would now need to sit at bar. She didn't even offer us another table and no other tables had come in to be sat by the time we left. We had one appetizer and a drink (which were mediocre) and left. The place has a nice ambiance and vibe and there was a DJ (but it was too empty for that and it was so loud) but if the hospitality at the door is not inviting, it will ruin a business. read more

OMG!!! I have been to resturants all over Europe and America and I put this one in the top 1!!! The friendliness of staff that met me outside the door and every where else was incredible!!! I felt like I was their most valued guest and it was the first time I had walked in the door!!! Even the owner came over and welcomed us!! The meNu complete with pictures was an experience in itself. We went on a Wednesday night, the food was okay/good. The fried calamari was very good, the red snapper bites were good, the churrasco was also good. The burger and fries was $36 and it was not anything special. The atmosphere was more club vibe than Wednesday night dinner. There was a live band that was very good it was just very loud so it didn't allow for conversation. The cocktails were ok, they were expensive for what they were. If you're heading downtown to the theater district check out this new place (opened about 6 month's ago). It was our First time here, we were greeted by lovely staff everyone was so helpful and gracious. Sunday brunch all day Sunday. Try a "WAP warm apple pie" cocktail which was extraordinarily delicious. Also, enjoyed the oxtail dinner entree it was scrumptious. Lastly, the owner was on site and greeting everyone to Mamajuana. I'm giving this place 3 stars just because of the ambiance. The music is great and aesthetically a beautiful restaurant. Drinks are great, but I wouldn't come too hungry because you are most likely to be disappointed. I was excited for the mofongo but it tasted overcooked and hard. The skewers were also dry. Oxtail pasta was delicious , but hardly had any oxtail. For the price point I was expecting great food but it was below average. The food was good. It was closing time and one worker said a very rude comment. They were about to close so I asked if she could bring two boxes she replied "I don't know anything about that" with attitude and a smirk on her face. She was not our waitress, nonetheless it was an inappropriate response. Treating people especially customers with respect and kindness is something I didn't receive at all. As an appropriate response, she should've instead said something like " OK I will let your waitress know." I don't know about y'all, but I wouldn't want a worker like this representing my restaurant.
