I have had a chance to visit this Mexican seafood restaurant for early dinner on a friend's recommendation. The restaurant is located right next to highway I-45, and has plenty of parking. The ambience gives you the vibes of a mid scale Mexican place, with plenty of servers busy serving their customers. I started off by ordering Mango Habanero Ceviche. The food came out quick. I must say the food, although fresh was VERY hot (due to Habanero peppers) for my taste. I also ordered fried Tilapia, that comes with a side of bun and rice with shrimps. I liked the quality of the food, and it certainly helped me get my taste buds back after the initial burning from the ceviche. One thing missing was the usual salsa and nachos that I've become so accustomed to all the TexMex places. The prices seem to be very reasonable and the service was nice. Why would they try their own take on Mexican shrimp cocktail?! If it's not broken why NOT fix it?!?! Their take on this typical dish is an epic fail. Not only are the flavors off but also the size of the fish and cut of the pico de gallo is off and does not work. The ceviche tostada was okay but lacked flavor. My husband had the fried fish and rice and the fish was good- I would recommend that. The street corn was okay. If there are no other options I would revisit but had higher hopes for this place. Mambo Seafood has some of the freshest seafood I've ever had. Stepping into this wood covered restaurant and looking over their massive menu, you'd think you were somewhere in Galveston. The restaurant is very clean, spacious even when packed & the booths are not crowded. The employees were super pleasant despite being busy. They seemed to be pretty used to the fast pace. We started with the Calamari which were big pieces that were lightly battered. I was glad that they were not overcooked or chewy, they were perfect. We also ordered the Shrimp Scampi & the Mambo Combo. The scampi shrimp were huge & smothered in butter and fresh garlic. The Mambo Combo consists of a stuffed crab, fried fish filets, fried grande shrimp, stuffed shrimp, mambo rice & a salad. The stuffed crab was by far my favorite of this dish. It was packed with so much flavor & filling, truly a must repeat! The fried filets were lightly battered and perfectly flakey. The fried fish was also lightly battered, big in size and cooked perfectly. The stuffed shrimp were massive & were a little spicy. Their rice is pretty famous & for good reason. It's absolutely flavorsome with bite size grilled shrimp. The salad was also appetizing with fresh crunchy lettuce, tomatoes & a big size of jicama. Been here before and wasn't a big fan of the food. But this time I got shrimp with shrimp fried rice as the side and it was delicious! The shrimp was just ok but the shrimp fried rice was the best I have had in the Houston area. I got mild but my friend got spicy and I tasted it and OMG! Too spicy for me! But if you like hot, be careful ( it was some kind of orange pepper that was cut up - looked like carrots) I plan to return to get the mild rice! read more

After doing some business in the Houston area for quite some time, Chas had already stumbled upon Mambo Seafood months prior to this particular trip happening. He actually has a fun story (that we'll perhaps make a video in the near future) about meeting someone there who gave him some guidance on what to order and explained the wonders of the michelada and pushed him to give it a try. The Michelada here is damn good. So...this fried rice..To say this is a side dish is comical and honestly ridiculous to me...but we (as a group of three people) ordered the SMALL order of the Pork Fried Rice and lo and behold, this is what we received. So if you cannot tell already, Mambo is a seafood restaurant that is heavily influenced by Spanish cuisine. So all I can think of is we are in a Seafood restaurant with many Spanish folks having a meal, with many Spanish influenced foods/drinks, with many employees speaking Spanish...and I just had the best Asian pork fried rice of my life. This rice was INSANELY flavorful. Very fresh scallions, HUGE and tender chunks of very well seasoned pork, moist and airy rice...this dish is seriously just such a win. This dish was seriously somewhere in the ballpark of $6.50 ... like ... for the WHOLE thing. You must (must...like you cannot pass on this) try out Mambo's famous rice! Ahhh yes, now for what we've all been waiting for! The Mambo style shrimp is listed on the appetizer menu, but this is a MEAL, and should be treated as a meal. You order in increments of ten and you can add potatoes and corn as well. This is like most any shrimp or seafood boil you've ever had but the spices/seasonings are just so on point. There is a very heavy presence of garlic (which I LOVE) and I guarantee you'll be using every piece of food in the general area to try and soak up as much of this sauce as possible. I believe we ordered twenty shrimp with corn and potatoes, add that to the rice and the empanada appetizer and you nearly had to ROLL us out of this place! Each order of ten shrimp was somewhere in the ballpark of $9. SUPER affordable, and incredibly delicious. You can barely get a "value meal" at drive-thru fast food chains for that price at this point. Mambo Seafood was a victory in all things flavor. I had this place built up to me by multiple people for months and it still delivered and did not disappoint. The drinks were good, business was booming, fast service, friendly and helpful wait staff, the empanadas were tasty, quite honestly potentially the best fried rice we've ever had, and the shrimp was so fresh and so flavorful all while being very affordable. You'll be doing yourself a disservice in you skip this place when traveling to the Houston area. read more

Service today was horrible. Adult plates arrived in a reasonable timeframe however child's plate arrived 15 minutes later. We asked for one spoon and one server said no they didn't have any then returned with 6 plastic sets which we kindly returned. Asked for the manager on duty 7/16 and he wouldn't come over. Recommendation replace the manager because he can't stand up and provide customer service. We are regulars at this location but needs a serious overhaul of management first and some staff. Service is the backbone. Finally a spoon that they didn't have? Too late. Manager after 2nd request is afraid or refused to address the situation. read more

The food was tasty, good portions. My shrimp was cold when they brought it out though. We came on a Friday at 2 pm. There was 1 other table out on the patio. The service was terrible. Our waitress was Mariela. She did not introduce herself even; I got her name from the receipt. When we arrived, she was at our table every 3-5 minutes trying to get our order even though we told her we needed some time to look at the menu. After the food arrived, she completely disappeared and we had to flag her down for more limes, sauce, etc. She also forgot to ring in my friends order and tried to play it off. So she had to wait longer for her food while the rest of us sat waiting with her. It seemed like the waitress was always in a rush to leave the table and never let our party finish getting our requests in (an extra to go box) before running off. She brought the check and was again at the table every 3-5 minutes checking for a credit card. Also, she charged me for a jumbo horchata when I didn't order that. She didn't ask me what size I wanted. Maybe this is how they pad their revenues (or her tips)? It was sketchy. When it came time to pay, she just handed us the mobile card reader. No explanation or communication at all (we all were speaking Spanish at the table). And it was sticky. I enjoy the food here but I cannot return because of the service. read more

The price was ok, the quality of the food was ok, nothing really special to report. The cashier and call taker was super friendly and very pleasant. It is partially a fish market and the seafood looked fresh. This was a Mexican restaurant focused on seafood. This was new for me but I was excited to try. We sat at the bar due to time constraint. The drinks was cool, had a strawberry margarita and the tequila was non existent. My friend had a strange beer with fresh lime squeezed in the bottom of the glass and hot sauce. It was strangely good let's say a bloody Mary beer. I got the seafood scampi with shrimp,octopus, and calamari. The dish came with a salad and shrimp fried rice. Now the food was absolutely horrible. The seafood though cooked correctly had absolutely no flavor AT ALL. I tried lime juice and soy sauce but it was a no go.. The only thing that saved the dish for me was that it was cooked to perfection. The shrimp fried rice was good for this to be a Mexican restaurant. I was pretty skeptical about eating at a popular Hispanic joint just because I received horrible service from another Mexican restaurant in the Hobby area. My sister insisted that I shouldn't be feeling that way, so I went ahead and ate here. The service we received was great! Although, our server had broken English and I couldn't really understand what she was saying--she tried her hardest to get her words out and my sister helped out too. It was national orgasm day, and go figure I was craving oysters. I got myself six oysters on a half shell for $6; they all were juicy thick and delicious. Served with saltine crackers, some of the crackers were stale and some weren't. The cocktail sauce was yummy. No lemons, only limes. The oysters were very fresh served on ice. The margarita I ordered was strawberry and it was so dang tasty and sweet..just how I like it. It wasn't too strong, but it still had alcohol it in. I'm also glad they had a comment card on the table as well as our menus. The side order of fries weren't as fresh as I would have liked it..they tasted as if they were fried in old grease and had no seasonings..very gummy and chewy..not crispy. We were staying in Huston this evening and decided to eat at Mambo Seafood. My wife has a severe allergy to corn and requested that her salmon be prepared plain. Upon receiving the order, it was clear that the waitress did not understand the order as most of the things were wrong. This was our first time at Mambo Seafood. My boyfriend was in the mood for some bacon-wrapped shrimp. This place was very full but that's to be expected on a Friday night. We had to wait maybe 1-2 minutes for a table. Not bad at all. Like I said it was crowded in there and a bit loud. The place didn't seem super clean to me. The table was a bit sticky. We had to wait at least 10 minutes for a server to come to our table. The lady who finally did wasn't even our server but she was nice enough to bring us our drinks. When we did finally met our server she was very sweet. My boyfriend ordered the (4) large bacon-wrapped shrimp with shrimp fried rice. The shrimps had jalapeños and cream cheese inside. They were really tasty even though we removed the jalapeños since neither of us like overly-spicy food. The shrimp fried rice was a little bland at first. But once we added some salt and pepper and soy sauce, it was PERFECT!! I helped him eat it. Yum! I ordered the #1 combo with (2) fried fish fillets and (6) fried shrimps plus fries. It was pretty good. I enjoyed it but I've had better. It was a lot of food though. I was full after eating one piece of fish and only 2 fried shrimps. Probably because I ate so much of his rice! It's pretty good. I'm from Maryland, so this is the norm cuisine at most carryouts. But understand is not Maryland and they are probably used to just Bar B Que. The fried shrimp & fish had a tasty breading. The rice that everyone is going nuts over is just shrimp fried rice, nothing special to a Marylander. They do not gave cocktail sauce, so don't expect it. What I did like was the manager came to my table and gave me the thumbs up asking if I enjoyed my meal and if there was anything I needed, he bring it over. I have been coming here since high school. I can't complain about anything. The ladies that work there work really hard and are always very kind and have amazing customer service. The food is delicious and I love how they keep coming up with new food items. The beer is also great. You can never go wrong with a michelada and wait until crawfish season. My mouth is already watering from the taste of those delicious crawfish. Especially when the weather is nice and you get to sit outside in the large patio area. Overall my first visit to Mambo Seafood was pretty underwhelming. The drinks were good. I had a beer-rita and my girlfriend had the Pepinada (sort of like a non-alcoholic cucumber margarita, very refreshing). Our server, Isamar, was also very on top of things. I may have ordered the wrong thing but I was not impressed with the Whole Fried Snapper, mostly because I thought it was way overcooked. It was cooked to the point where every bit of meat that I pulled off the fish was rock hard. My girlfriend's dinner was better - she ordered the fish and shrimp zarandeado style. We both liked the shrimp fried rice, but overall it was a pretty forgettable meal. I was craving raw oysters that night but I was informed that they were not serving them because they were "bad". I guess I can't complain there, and I appreciate them for not serving them. The bathrooms were clean enough, but it looked like someone had thrown up in the urinal. read more
