It's ok...no surprises....ambiance is loud and lit up like a Walmart....Plastic plastics, cups and bowls remind me of a school cafeteria lunch...it's a low budget operation that caters to non-discerning, less aware clientele...if you want loud, noisily, greasy, fried cafeteria style food this is your place ! I don't fault a business for being low budget...but their meal pricing is closer to pappa's seafood meal pricing without the service or quality. Overall not worth the dollars spent....these guys are making big profit for a below par offering. Tried the food yesterday and only had a good experience with the calamari (pretty good!) we ordered the spicy shrimp app (not the correct name ) but they were not very warm (temperature) and we also ordered two of the special fried rices ( took home) seriously they were mostly rice. I've never had rice that lacked the special portion (meat and veggies) and to top it off the rice is hard/ under cooked. Very disappointed!! I love this place, have been coming for years. I usually get the same plate every time but I decided to get the Vuelve la Vida soup, and was a bit disappointed. I got the large bowl and it costed me $12 only to see a few pieces of veggies,2-3 shrimps, and 1 oyster..that was it. You're only gonna get a big bowl of liquid. During this pandemic, they expanded which is nice but not so nice when they're not respecting the social distancing. I mean literally you're back to back with the table behind you. There was so many people getting up from their tables without a mask and nobody was enforcing the rules. My family and I ordered fried calamari for the appetizer and agua de tamarindo for one. The agua de tamarindo was so watered down, it could literally be water with some coloring and the calamari was not fresh at all. This food was very nasty! I ordered Calamari and the batter was too thick and the calamari was rubbery and wasn't fresh. My main dish I ordered sautéed shrimp which wasn't really sautéed but put in gravy and rice. The dish just was absolutely disgusting. Some shrimp were deveined and some weren't and wasn't fresh. The restaurant felt as if you were sitting in a school cafeteria. My daughter ordered fried shrimp and didn't like her shrimp because they were hard. I've been to this Mambo's just a couple of times. It's not my go-to spot for all that Mexican-Chinese fusion cuisine - I prefer Golden Seafood - but Mambo's is still an okay spot. Their ceviche is pretty average. It's only a fish ceviche, which is unfortunate because i like my bits of of octopus, scallops, crab, etc. It's topped with a dollop of spicy cocktail sauce - not ketchup as on yelper stated - which isn't typically how I like my ceviche ... that's more campechana-style, I guess. But the loads of lime, pico, and a few slice of guac are a nice touch. It is, however, *super* salty. I looked like a puffer fish the next day. Micheladas are why everyone goes to Mambo's. Sit on the patio with your icy beer, pile of fried rice, fried shrimp, ceviche, and you're good to go. read more

Friday, right before 6 in April 2015, I circled around the restaurant and noticed car lights blinked, and managed to snag a parking spot literally a few steps away from entrance. As we walked up to the restaurant, there was large tent which were full of people waiting patiently. The moment we opened the doors and stepped inside restaurant, a cheerful host politely asked in Spanish how many? I raised up 2 fingers and another family walked right in asking where they could sit. She Told them patio. She then asked if patio was okay? We told her yes. Then I spotted someone cleaning up a booth and we were able to sit there. This is my favorite Mexican Seafood restaurant in Houston. Located just off Southwestern Highway this is the go to place for a delicious seafood dinner and a cold cerveza. I was hankering some TexMex but trout this Yelp finder would help me out. It sure did. This is a gem. I started with the spicy shrimp appetizer that was outstanding! It was served hot and wet like a good tequila and spiced perfectly with garlic and sauce. A must do. My server recommended the salmon with mixed grilled vegetables and shrimp fried rice. I'm telling you that my local China Palace could take a lesson here. It was served with pico de gallo and chopped green onions that made it delish. The grilled buttered corn was outstanding as was the grilled green and red peppers that gave it color and also seasoned perfectly. The added small russets were good too. My salmon was seasoned and grilled perfectly as you can see by the photo. It was also the right size fillet to be a meal and not a sissy cut. Well worth the money and and value. Go here! The manager intercepted me and made a great impression as did my server. Talented chefs and staff. Four stars! read more

I am blown away by their seafood Gumbo. This is the ONLY authentic gumbo to be found in Houston. Believe me during the past 2 years I've tried them all or at least all the places in the loop I could find. if you told me my Cajun Grandma made it I would absolutely believe it! ENGLISH: Yesterday, Mambo effortlessly accommodated a party of 17! Fortunately for us, it moderately busy. The restaurant floor and restrooms were very clean and maintained. My order consisted of the Vuelve a La Vida cocktail, two Pacifco micheladas, and the Mambo Combo - an assortment of fried seafood. The cocktail had the perfect amount of spice for me. I'm usually adding more Valentina or Tapatio to my food. It doesn't come with tostadas. Rather, you get served a basket of Saladitas at your arrival (where you would otherwise get chips and salsa). The Mambo Combo needed more breading spice. It was super bland! The micheladas were DELICIOUS! Perfectly spicy, just the right amount of tomato. Thank you to our servers Fatima, Yanelis, Lisbeth for continually checking on us and making sure the micheladas kept coming! I will be back! SPANISH: Sin ningún problema, Mambo acomodo 17 personas! I drove from Corpus to San Antonio just to try this restaurant. We were seated for a table of 4 as soon as we got there around 11:45 am. The person that seated us was very friendly. Our server was there to take our drink order promptly & gave us the opportunity to look at our menu without making us feel rushed. Our order was taken correctly & we got what we ordered. The shrimp could have been bigger but I'm from the coast so my standards are very high. The menu prices were very affordable for anyone. I was impressed with the variety of food & prices. The restaurant made me feel comfortable with my surroundings. Everyone was normal not uppity. The staff actually looked like they liked their jobs. This is not something I see very often. No one seemed stressed out & I saw smiles on their faces. That made me feel good about how employees are treated there. These things made me want to go back again to see if I have the same experience. read more

I came here recently for a UYE with some other yelpers. I had never visited a Mambo before this. I had driven by it many times and really didn't know what it was. I was told that the biggest thing is their micheladas (sp?) One I don't drink beer and two I don't really like bloody mary's so that was the reason I never bothered visiting it. So I figured I'd come and try out the food. I had one of their fried baskets, it came with a few pieces of fried fish and shrimp along with a side of fried rice! Damn no joke the fried rice was delicious the fried seafood was on par with long john silvers, not amazing but edible. The atmosphere here is fun. They have a huge patio and the service was actually way better than I was expecting. read more

This isn't the cleanest restaurant in the world, and when you walk in, you'll be greeted by staring Hispanics. The waitresses primarily speak Spanish, but at least they're fully clothed. Broken English sometimes works, but pointing works better. Parking can be a hassle because of the restaurant's popularity, so avoiding the peak lunch hour is highly recommended. I'm willing to ignore all of this place's deficiencies for one thing: FRIED RICE. It's that good! Yes, as an Asian, I said it. The fried rice is cheap too! Known as the Mambo Rice on the menu, a regular portion size can easily feed 3 people alone without any starters, side dishes, etc. Best of all, it's only $4.99!!! Beat that McDonald's Extra Value! I usually get the pork mambo rice (see photo), and it's funny how the pork is the same BBQ pork you'll find in Chinatown. It's the sweet, BBQ meat that as a kid, I called it "cookie meat" because the glaze just melts in your mouth. I do like the gumbo, although for what it's worth, I'm not Cajun. The gumbo is full of seafood, so it's worth the money. In my cup of gumbo ($3.99), I had a whole mussel, a few shrimps, pieces of fish, okra, and rice. It is always delicious! I am not sure about all the other dishes you get here. I admit I am not a fan of battered, fried seafood, and I don't usually have a craving for seafood cocktails. First time coming here and im so glad i read a yelp review before getting to the location because they don't sit you down , you have to chose your own table and the person in the front will not greet you or talk to you so heads up. Thankfully we were hable to get a waitress ( Misley ) who was super helpful wile choosing food and drinks. She brought the food to us in less than 5 minutes ( WOW ) . I had their lemon margarita , quite strong but delicious. Tilapia is a bit tasteless but you won't notice it if you are having their rice ( witch i highly recommend getting or taking home some ) The food is great but costumer service can be so muchhhhhhh better . Never really thought about eating here before yesterday, and now I am glad that I did. So a little bit of history.... I have been searching for bacon wrapped shrimp FOREVER since moving to Houston - I used to get 5 jumbo shrimp wrapped in bacon from one of my fave spots in NY for about $10 so imagine my horror when most Houston locations quoted at least $25 for this delicacy.... no bueno. So I checked out the menu and was surprised and instantly ecstatic to see 6 bacon wrapped shrimp for $14.00 (yeah still more expensive than NY but less expensive than most Houston places) so with that in mind, I just had to go there. Now, it was amusing when we got there to be told to seat ourselves by one of the servers who promptly returned to her conversation, we shrugged that off and found a seat. We sat ourselves and was happy with the waitstaff, who were VERY attentive before we placed our order but was not as attentive after. Our table seemed to have 2 waitresses which was different and made it more so obvious when we couldn't get any help after our food arrived. We ordered the bacon wrapped shrimp (excellent - the shrimp was stuffed with cheese and had a slice of pepper inside) and a side of mambo shrimp rice (also excellent) and salad, stuffed crab, fried fish and fried shrimp. They gave us fries instead of the salad, and when we wanted to correct this error, couldn't get any of the waitresses' attention, thankfully the manager was walking around checking on the tables and he happily brought out the side of salad. The only concern that I had was the fact that communicating with my waitress was a bit difficult because of the language barrier. I asked for sugar on my margarita glass and she repeated salt to me a few times before conceding with sugar. Also we were in the mood for oysters and inquired the cost and was told in a very unsure manner that a dozen oysters was $14.00 and half a dozen was $80 (????), so I responded "$8?" and she said "$80" - so we decided not to get the oysters. The crackers are like crack, I couldn't stop eating them and the strawberry margarita was like a slushie which I appreciated. All in all, not a bad restaurant, can possibly focus a bit more on the customer service aspect of things but even then was not bad enough to dissuade me from returning. Will definitely add this to my seafood restaurant listing for future use. read more

Not bad but not great. The restaurant definitely has an energetic vibe. Families are hanging out on the patio, friends enjoying happy hour, and people grabbing a meal for dinner. We met up for a CMYE (community manager Yelp event) and when Farrah said the table was outside I was scared! When sat outside and it was surprisingly pleasant. I wasn't overheated even though my car thermometer said 90! We sat and some people in the group enjoyed these really interesting red beers called micheladas, they were very interesting. The waitresses are very sweet and always smiling. The food takes a crazy long time to come out. For those of us not drinking, it was a very long time. My shrimp was good and pretty standard. My husband had the fried tilapia with french fries and the rice. He enjoyed it quite a bit. I was a little surprised that our two meals and sodas ended up being $28. I guess that's what I get for drinking soda at a place with bottles of soda. This place feels like the "locals hangout" and I'm sure they love it. It's too bad that Mambo's doesn't comply with the Houston smoking ordinance that says no one can smoke within 25 feet of an entrance. While sitting on the patio, people were smoking, which is illegal. I wish restaurants would enforce the law. read more

I was craving seafood so a friend suggested this place for me. Went there on Sunday at 5:30 and it was packed. We waited for 15 minutes to be seated and then we also had to wait for like 30 minutes for the food. We ordered two grilled Red snapper plates with fried rice and salad. We also had one grilled shrimp plate with fries and rice. Everything was delicious (i just wish if they used more spices on the gilled fish - maybe more cumin?). I was satisfied with the food and the service. I would definitely recommend it to anyone! As everyone mentioned the language barrier, it's a great place to practice your Spanish since most of them speak it. read more

This is a hidden treasure. Food is fine, and super duper CHEAP! The place is almost always packed! one time i walked in very late at around 1030 PM on a friday night, and still had to wait about 15 mins to be seated cuz i didnt wanna sit in the outside patio. No decor, nothing fancy, just ordinary (somewhat ghetto) but the food makes up for it! I usually get the fried seafood combo #1 for $6.99 which includes 2 pieces of fish filets, fried shrimps, shrimp fried rice, and a roll! my goodness for $6.99 only, that plate can fill u up! the fried seafood is not really really great, just mediocre; yet, the fried rice is the bomb! absolutely delicious! if you dont like fried seafood, try the shrimp scampi by the pound, or the grilled tilapia or basa fillets, of which all are tasty! my boyfriend and i like to add the extra garlic butter sauce from the shrimp scampi to the fried rice to make the rice extra yummy (: yeaaa....it's fattening though :P For appetizers, the mixed seafood cocktail is good. One thing i have tried but not liked so far is the fried oysters. the market price on the oysters is like $13.99 for a pound but those oysters are like teeny tiny baby oysters booooo. if u want cheap non-fried seafoods, mambo is the right place to go for sure!! It honestly helps if you can speak a little Spanish before coming here. Regardless, they are incredibly accommodating. The place very casual and very packed. We both ordered a mango Rita which is loaded with chile and mango yumminess. Absolutely incredible! For a starter, we decided to share a half order of the calamari. It was only kind of warm, but crispy, however the flavor was rather bland. For the meal, we ordered the mambo combo which comes with assorted fried fish goodies, rice, and salad. I feel that the oil used to fry the fish was old. The flavored of the various fish were lost, which was disappointing. The fried rice was interesting enough though, and the stuffed crab had nice flavor in the stuffing. I'd come again for the margaritas. read more

My husband and I were craving a michelada after a "manic Monday" so we stopped here after work for drinks and dinner. The micheladas were so so since they weren't ice cold nor had salt along the rim..... instead, the salt was placed messily around the entire cup. My husband ordered the vuelve a la vida soup, which he said was ok. Not the best, but certainly doable. It had shrimp, oysters, fish, and octopus in it. I ordered the chelada shrimp which had the chelada mix breaded in them. These tasted ok, but dry. They would've been better if the mix was more moist or if they added another ingredient to the mix. Customer service wasn't all that great either. This is the second Mambo's I've been to that their service isn't good. Our drinks needed refills and our waitress was no where to be found. Also, when she placed my plate down on the table, a piece of celery fell off the plate onto the table. She didn't even bother to tell me "sorry" or that she would bring me more celery. She simply covered the celery up with the plate to try and see if I even noticed. read more
