Mamma Mia you rocked my world and made me tingle in every lustful way possible!!! I have been wanting to dine here for a long time now don't ask me why i waited until a stupid ass pandemic hit to finally go i don't freakin know hahaha!!!! But i made it and i came early and waited and watched from my car as they set everything up...I made reservations for the moment they opened! Can you tell i was excited?? I strapped on my mask (yes i said that on purpose ;)....And jumped out of my car and walked up to the door like a damn pasta loving crackhead!!! My son and i chose to sit outdoors because it was absolutely beautiful that day and as you see in my pics so comfy and inviting. Our waiter (dammit i'm so bad with names i don't remember his name) Was outstanding!!! As i perused the wine list i decided to go with the house red now i know that is a gamble sometimes Lol however this time it was a win!! And a nice fat pour too which if anyone reading this knows me i LOVE my wine and i drink no less than 1/2 to a full bottle when i'm drinking it! No judging please i'm me ;) It was delicious. My son ordered coffee and said it was fabulous and fresh. So we stared with the Calamari Fritta and the Bocconcini Mamma Graziella.....Ok now i must emphasise how f*cking insanely delicious this dish was!!! I'm sorry if i offend gentle softies with my words but that dish is sex on a plate all the way!! It's a thick perfectly fried calamari steak cut into cubes with this lemon caper cream sauce that's laced with parmesan reggiano cheese that is so sensually stimulating to not only my taste buds but made me tingle as i was eating every bite and fighting over it with my son Lol!! I'm telling you right now if i wasn't in public i would've picked that plate up and licked every drop off of that plate no joke not even trying to be funny here that's how deeply i feel about that dish...Hahaha what's funny is that every time i write a review and reminisce about something that blew my mind it turns me on that's how passionate i am about food. The Bocconcini were delicious savoury, crispy balls of fried fresh mozzarella served with a rich meat sauce and parmesan we enjoyed those but that calamari will be all i ever order for my starter from now on and i shall have my own plate this bitch isn't sharing with anyone!! I chose to get half braised short rib ravioli and half Osso Bucco ravioli why well because i can and since i am always honest i couldn't make a damn decision i want it all!!! My son chose the Porcini Sacchetti. OMG the braised short rib ravioli is stuffed with chianti braised short ribs, onions, asiago and parmesan and tossed in garlic butter sauce I'm not gonna be shy i could deep throat an entire plate of those...The Osso Bucco were also delicious but those short rib ones stole my soul!!! My sons which of course i had to sample for review purposes hehehe were outstanding they were pasta purses stuffed with fresh ricotta and porcini mushrooms tossed in a brown butter sage sauce...While he did like it he was more interested in my ravioli which yea i'm not a mean mom i did share a few bites with him Lol geez ;)...So we ended this delicious ass meal with desserts!! I chose the Italian creme cake and prosecco and as you can see from my pic it was an absurdly delectable combination. My son got the Spumoni ice cream just because he's never had it before and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have to say this was one of the most enjoyable dining experiences i've had in a very long time our waiter was attentive, had a beautiful personality and was extremely knowledgeable of everything i asked him. Came here for dinner on the 23rd to celebrate Christmas with our daughter who couldn't come home for the holiday. Really liked this place - it's clearly a local favorite as our waiter knew many of the guests by first name. We had the scallops (divine!), a mushroom pillow? pasta dish that was out of this world and my husband had a fish dish - also very good. I am from the San Fernando Valley and I was in Bakersfield for an architectural seminar. At lunchtime, I asked Siri to recommend an Italian restaurant and she replied with Mamma Mia. I ordered a side portion of the Sofia Salad and the Porcini Saccheti entree. The salad consisted of baby arugula, feta cheese, pistachio and lemon vinaigrette. Extremely tasty, yet light. The pasta was purse-shaped, stuffed with ricotta and porcini mushrooms and tossed in a brown-butter sage sauce. When the server came by to check on me and asked how was I enjoying my meal, I happily reported that the salad was delicious and the Porcini Saccheti was the best pasta I had ever had. Since then, my family has traveled 99 miles each way to enjoy a superb meal at Mamma Mia. Other menu items worth mentioning, since they were enjoyed by all are the Calamari Fritta, the Isabella's Salad, the Scallops and the Ribeye Steak. I am looking forward to my birthday in January since you know where we will be celebrating! Mamma Mia's is a wonderful small family owned spot in Bakersfield. Went on a Saturday evening no reservations but sat promptly. Wobbly table aside, lovely seating areas. Head waiter overseeing everything as well as handling tables felt like a really nice touch, showed they care. Wait staff was polite smiling and always willing to help. Bread to start with a mushroom olive/oil spread was a perfect warm up. Food came quickly and in generous portions. Taste was near perfection! They open at 11 AM. We were meeting several ladies there for lunch. My friend and I arrived 29 minutes early. The lady at the bar said they don't open till 11 AM. It was freezing outside, so we went to the restaurant next door. Another friend of ours went there, and they sat her down at the table reserved for us. The food is amazing. There were too many to try. I had the ravolly lobster melted in my mouth. My friend had the salmon omg, she allowed me to try it and it was so delicious. It was a Fri night, 7pm reservations. 4 people. We had a very nice time. Our friends chose the place this time and it was nice to go downtown for once. Parking was no issue on the street, nearby. We were walked through the bar area entrance, past the kitchen into a larger dining area. Our table was waiting for us. Adored the fresh roses on the table in a vase. Our waiter was great, very attentive and was patient with us as we perused the menu (thankfully, not too large a menu) and he made recommendations for appies and for the special of the night. He was sweet and personable. 2 of us got the special of the night - scallops with penne. I am always worried that the pasta will be overcooked at new place I try as I am picky about this and would prevent me from eating the pasta portion but it was good! Could have used maybe 1 minute less on the boil but hey, I like my pasta quite al dente. The meat sauce was good too. I had wished for a little more of it. The scallops were well done and nicely seasoned. 3 on the plate and were of the large variety. I had a little box of food left to take home with me that made for a nice breakfast the next AM. I also had a glass of Moscato and for $8, it was not a large glass however quite delicious. One in our party got the Italian sandwich with fries and he liked it, could not even eat all of it. Another got the short rib ravioli and he loved it and gave it a 5. He said his Peroni beer (bottle) was good and cold too. A few little things that prevented a 5 star review here are; The restaurant was pretty warm inside. Could be an easy fix with lowered A/C. I did not love the table bread as I prefer it to be served softer and warmer. It was a good vehicle for the leftover calamari sauce though. Man, that was a great appy choice. Chunks of calamari as opposed to the normal rings. Not fried either. Grilled! SO yummy, I want some right now. I REALLY loved the shaved, GOOD parm cheese that came on the calamari and the dishes. The calamari could have used lemon wedges but I would ask for some next time. Lastly, our server let us know he had to split to go to his next job so we could pay him. He was tipped handsomely and he was gone. Which left us with no one to fill our waters ever again. Sad too because everyone seemed friendly but we had no connection to any other service once he left and as mentioned, it was hot in there and we really needed water! Oh well. We ended up being the last people out (I think they close the dining area at 10pm? Bar area was still hopping!) We vowed that we would come back. It was a tasty meal with good company! *Update - reported by our friend that had eaten the Italian sandwich that it had made him ill. He was up most of the night because of it. Just a note. I love Italian food, but this place is a pass for me unfortunately. The service is great and efficient, but I just found the flavors lacking and pretty simple. I really enjoyed my first experience here. Likes: - the staff was very attentive. I never had to an empty glass of water and they were very informed on the history of the restaurant when I asked. - The white pasta is delicious. It's buttery, cheesy, and has just the right amount of garlic (although I've never complained about too much). The chicken was very juicy and I'm not sure how much the cheese actually adds to the flavor. - My son's burger had a large, juicy patty. The meat tasted like a pretty good cut. I definitely want to try the full version with all the fixings (his was just meat and cheese). - the fries are worth trying even if you just get them as a side. Do you enjoy the natural taste of In-N-Out burgers? These taste just like them. - There's lots of elbow room here. You won't have to worry about bumping into someone while getting to your seat. I think this would be an ideal spot for dating as the music doesn't play too loud. - The pasta meat sauce had great flavor: it's hearty and rich with beef flavor. It tastes like it's been stewing for hours. - The Isabella salad is so refreshing and has a great mix of flavors and texture. - The cocktails are served with a beautiful block of ice. Other: - The music seems to be all over the place. This might work for you though. - You'll have to keep an eye on their Instagram so you can catch some of the specials. I'd love to come back for lunch. Is there an elephant in the room in regards to how similar this place is to Luigi's? I guess that depends on who you ask. I didn't grow up in the area. I have zero stake in either business. They both serve great food and you can't deny the appeal of getting quality Italian food from a place like this for dinner. If i had to choose a place for a first date, I'd go here.
