This is the second buffet I've visited, located in Redmond. There weren't too many customers at lunchtime, but the food was fresh, and at first glance, nothing looked unappetizing. Environment: Redmond is very close to Bellevue, with many big tech companies nearby, so the local spending power is high. As a result, the environment is naturally not an issue. The buffet area is clean and well‑organized, with clearly separated sections: Japanese food, hot dishes, salad, fruit, steamed dim sum, and Western food. The clientele here is noticeably more diverse than at the buffet I visited in Auburn - clearly thanks to the greater variety of food. The seating is spacious. Overall, a big plus. Service: Nothing stood out about the service, except that the staff cleared plates promptly. I think a buffet restaurant should proactively ask customers about their dining experience in order to adjust the menu and introduce new items. After all, constant renewal and innovation are a restaurant's promotional tools. Taste / Food: Steak - The first thing I tried from the Chinese food section. The beef quality wasn't outstanding; it was cooked well‑done and a bit too salty. Not recommended. Sushi - The salmon sushi was fresh. For the Arctic surf clam sushi, each piece came with two slices of clam, but the nori overpowered the delicate flavour of the clam - not recommended. Cantonese steamed dim sum - The shrimp dumplings (har gow) were pre‑made / semi‑finished products. As I've mentioned before, if a restaurant doesn't make them from scratch, using a good semi‑finished product actually becomes a matter of trust. If a good restaurant carefully selects a high‑quality pre‑made product, I think most customers can accept it. The steamed ginger & scallion beef tripe was tender, with a balanced saltiness - recommended. The steamed purple rice cake was also a semi‑finished product, but it was slightly undercooked. Hot dishes - The total number of raw ingredients used in the hot dishes was no more than 15 SKUs, often combined in predictable ways. I tried beef with broccoli, plain stir‑fried broccoli, celery with shrimp, etc. The wok work wasn't particularly impressive. Fruit - When fruit sits out for too long, it oxidises - for example, pineapple and cantaloupe. I was a bit disappointed to see mango pudding in the fruit section. The strawberries were good. Final thoughts: As someone who used to work in the restaurant industry, the key to making a buffet stand out is actually product selection (choice of dishes and ingredients). The profit model of a buffet isn't a secret, so finding great suppliers and competitive purchasing prices becomes critical. The dining experience at a buffet is similar to hot pot - we give the choice to the customers, and they decide for themselves. The wide variety of food is great on weekends and for dinner. The wait staff are very friendly, attentive, and come by frequently to take away finished plates and refill water. Ambience is okay. The negative is that they impose a 10% service charge you can't opt out of and don't disclose. Overall a 2.5. I really dislike giving places less than a 3 star but we will never come back to this place and I'd least have to maybe want to come back or would recommend to someone else. And this place just didn't do it for us. It's your run of the mill Asian buffet. The food is average and not the worst but ehhhh, just okay. They had lots of Asian themed options with even a dim sum section. They had crab legs, shrimp, sushi and an okay dessert section. There are signs stating that if you take unauthorized food they will charge you $50.00 lb. Unfinished food will be $20.00 a lb. The customer service was good. The people were friendly and the place was definitely busy. Lots of people going back for food and eating plenty so they definitely are doing something right - it just wasn't our cup of tea overall. That was not the case here at Mandarin's. My sister in law and her husband are chefs and foodies and they recommended this place. They have quite the selection and I definitely got my money's worth! It's hard to rate buffets because you know the quality won't be top quality and it's pretty average. At buffets, I look out for stand-out items that make the overall place a value to dine. We had a party of 6 and went on a Friday night. It was busy but we were able to get seated with no wait. They make you pay up front so be prepared for that. The noodle stir-fry station had a long line so I had to wait until after 2-3 plates and around 7:45pm to hit the station again. It was a bit burned (not just meat but even my noodles) so I wouldn't say it was pleasant to eat and a bit bitter with the charred areas. One thing to keep in mind is they DO charge you for unfinished food so you better finish literally everything on your plate and there are signs posted at the food service areas saying only take what you can eat. Some other highlights are: fried honey mayo shrimp, crab legs, mussels (sauce on top wasn't good though, I just wiped it off), salmon nigiri, seaweed salad, baked salmon, fried squid. I would say those are the expensive items they have that are worth it although the crab meat is small and the legs were thin so it'll take a loooong time and a lot of effort to eat crab. But if you have a strong will, go for it. The buffet is divided into sections. There's a soup section, hot/fried foods (not raw) section, salad bar, sushi/raw fish section, fruit and dessert, and a little portable freezer with grab and go ice cream. Located in a strip mall in Redmond, Mandarin Buffet & Grill is a great option for dining out. There is plenty of parking, but you may need to park in back of the lot, which is not well lit at night. The interior is bright and clean with plenty of food stations set up and staff milling about to pick up used plates and bring drinks. We went on a Sunday night and the place was full. Be prepared to spend; two people at 6pm with one drink was $81. Drinks are not included and they do charge a 10% fee off the bat so additional tipping is up to you. I think that is expensive, especially with drinks being an additional cost, but what isn't overpriced nowadays? Despite the crowd, most of the food trays were full. There seemed to be a constant rotation on depleted dishes. Nothing was super hot, but none of the food was cold either. I went straight to the sushi and it was delicious and fresh. There was a great variety and when one tray was getting low, there were two guys keeping the sushi trays fulls. The hot dishes were fairly typical for a buffet, beef and broccoli, noodles, fried rice, pizza, garlic bread and fries. There were also quite a few seafood options. I thought the pork buns, the bbq ribs, kielbasa, and sushi were standouts. Everything else was good but basic. Not too spicy, not too outrageous, just cooked to satisfy a wide range of palettes. The dessert section consisted of tiramisu, panna cotta, cheesecake, jello and ice cream. For the ice cream, there were individual cups of strawberry, chocolate and vanilla. I love this idea because normally, at other restaurants there is a scoop that sits in water and customers serve themselves. This always seems a little gross to me. Came here hoping it was different than many reviews say. It was not, the food was just okay. I enjoyed the seafood but the sushi and chicken were not good. The price is too high in my opinion. Exactly what you would expect for a Chinese buffet!! Like it's nothing fancy but also no one really comes here expecting it to be. IMO it's "good enough". If you're hungry and looking to eat a lot of sushi, Mongolian grill, dumplings, noodles, select seafood (clams, scallops, crawfish, octopus, occasionally crab), and soups you will certainly leave this place full. Dessert selection is not great and leaves more to be desired - but otherwise it's got a decent selection of stuff. Pros: Fast service. Pay up front including 10% tip. Great for large groups. It's not always at safe consumption temperatures, especially during lunch, but you likely won't regret coming. They charge a 10% gratuity, which is kind of wack since they're mainly just grabbing plates and forks. I'd love to tip, but based on the service, it's hard to justify. The restaurant is very spacious inside with lots of seatings. You do pay upfront + gratuity before being seated. There are lots of food options including Chinese and Japanese foods. I personally love sushi, so I decided to get an assortment. It is not the best sushi but still pretty alright for buffet quality. There was a long line for the Mongolian grill, so I would like to try that the next time I'm back. I noticed the staff was quick to clearing up tables and plates and filling up water as well. Overall, we had an enjoyable time! I think this would be a good lunch/dinner option for families to come dine here once in a while. read more

I didn't know this was here! I've passed by it literally every day on the way to work, I've only gone to Safeway and driven past Bai Tong and didn't realize there was an entire shopping plaza behind it. I like Chinese American buffets- they remind me of childhood. This one has a sushi section (pretty large, actually, with hand rolls, maki rolls, nigiri, and sashimi), a chocolate fountain, and a Mongolian grill station! I did get a Mongolian grill dish, though I think it was too salty for my taste. I would season it myself next time (or ask for less sauce). I also got a bunch of their fried foods, half of them were a little cold :( But their Chinese dishes were tasty, and I really liked their soups! The sushi was okay-- certainly decent, far from the best I've had (and unfortunately I had just gone to a GREAT sushi place the day before for direct comparison) but also far from the worst. I would eat it again. I didn't try much of the dessert because I overate the rest of the food, but they had quite a pretty array there as well. There was a lot of open space and seating, so very comfortable to get around. As with other buffets, I wouldn't come if I had too many food restrictions/allergies, because there isn't really separation of ingredients/ lots of cross contamination (I saw someone use the same tongs for all the foods in an area, despite there clearly being different tongs for every dish). I think overall, probably as I expected, if you are craving a specific item, this isn't a good place to eat. But if you want an array/variety, this is pretty good! Easy crowd pleaser with a wide variety of sushi, Chinese food, Mongolian grill, and dessert options. We met up with another family and enjoyed our dinner here, each having a easy time filling up our plates with tasty options. The food is good across the board, with very few misses. I particularly recommend the sushi and Mongolian grill. We had a few kids in our party and they really enjoyed the chocolate fountain as well. As a loyal patron of Haiku Buffet in Redmond, before closing down last year, their owner let me know their culinary team was being moved to Mandarin Buffet and that is how I found out about this place. Same great pricing ($19 for weekday lunch if you make it), though FYI at Mandarin Buffet they do add on a 10% service charge to your bill right up front. Also note that even though I have been here 3 times in the last 6 months, my experience is limited to the lunch buffet so take that as you will. Large selection made up of mostly Chinese and Japanese foods. Really enjoyed the Mongolian grill, the brisket at the meat carving spot, and the sushi rolls - which might pale in comparison to what you'll find at dedicated sushi joints but just remember it's All You Can Eat along with a huge variety of other options. As with all Asian buffets I am still underwhelmed by the poor dim sum quality (EXCEPT the lotus paste buns - my friend and I got hooked on these and couldn't stop gobbling them up). For the value hunters, I will say that from my three trips here, only the first time have I seen sashimi (and it was a slow "refill"), and that was also the only time I had seen crab (which was even slower). Overall the food quality is decent, friends and family that I've brought here have enjoyed it, and the location is way more convenient (right off the busy intersection at 148th Ave & NE 24th) than Haiku Buffet, so as long as they keep the pricing competitive, I see myself continuing to come back here. read more

Saw this from Tim Lee from a YouTube channel and so I had to try this place out. So we went there tonight for dinner. The cost is $30. and change. Plus she added the extra fees for tips which came up to a little over $120. There are many selections for this buffet especially them sushi's. First of all them sushi's the rice is a little hard. There were (2) types of sweet flavor pork. One was the sweet pork ribs which to me are a little chewy. The 2nd is the sweet pork chop which to me was really tender and taste. Overall them foods were ok, I had better for what the price cost. I don't think I will be going back anytime soon. Also for what it is worth, No price way too high. The food had no flavor and I wasn't expecting high quality but at least I was thinking it shouldn't be so bland. My drink arrived by my second plate and I'm not a fast eater I actually thought I was gonna have to go to the hostess and request a beverage. The service lacks since they are compensated automatically. I tried various dishes hoping to find one I could stick to and salvage the evening but I could not. With the impacts of Covid on the buffet scene it appears Mandarin has the market cornered. Plates clearly from the acquisition of employees and cookware from Haiku and quality definitely improved I think this will be where one takes the Asian Aunties and Uncles who like to eat their weight in crab legs and salt n pepper shrimp. My daughter definitely ate her weight in seafood! The silken fried tofu was a classy touch. I also liked the coco mouse and the flan and crème brûlée. Chocolate fondue tower a must. I was excited to try one of the few buffet options on the Eastside. Here's my experience: Pros: * Quick and efficient seating. * Excellent customer service; the staff was attentive and friendly. *The chocolate fountain was a big hit with the kids. First timer at mandarin buffet and what truly drew me to give them a try is the fact that haiku buffet (formerly located inside of redmond town center) closed permanently and relocated their cooks and staff to mandarin buffet. Haiku was impressive enough to draw me to their new dwelling First impression upon walking in- the space is massive. Tons of seating in a open room with booths lining the walls. The booths are a bit worn but sturdy enough to last you comfortably for the duration of your feast. The floors were incredibly sticky, not a huge deal but, sticky enough that it caught my attention. *SURCHARGE* please note that there is a 10% surcharge applied to your total. Not trying to be a cheapo however... it's rare to see restaurants at this point charging a surcharge to dine in. The way their food bars are set up is a bit clunky, so you'll find yourself caught in a crowd of other diners often. Usual spread of Chinese and American fair, with a sushi bar and Mongolian noodle station. We arrived 10 minutes after they opened and I did notice that some of their food items were room temperature (boiled fish and walnut shrimp) and some of their fried items were stale (egg rolls and fried shrimp) Their sushi was fresh and delicious with a ton of variety, and I immediately recognized the same sushi chef that previously worked at haiku buffet (still adorning his haiku uniform) As I continued my meal, I noticed the plates were also from haiku, which made me chuckle as I thought "waste not want not"! Their Mongolian noodle station is subpar. The ingredients all look a bit... sad :( I put together a small plate with bean sprouts, shrimp and minced garlic and overall, not bad but, not spectacular. I would say the noodle station is an added novelty. The deserts were also subpar- with the exception of the creme brûlée. To start, this is a lively buffet with a pay-first setup (including the tip), so you can eat to your heart's content. The selection is decent--not bad, but nothing extraordinary. The crab legs were small to medium-sized, and the crawfish was decent. The rest of the food was the standard buffet fare, which was fine. There were, however, a few things that caught our attention in a negative way toward the end of our visit. We were seated by a window with a dead fly nearby, and we noticed a large clump of hair rolling on the floor. The ice cream in the freezer was also not great. I get that things can occasionally slip through, but for the sake of customer experience, please try to keep things like dead flies or hair out of sight. For a modest fee of $50 and 1 hour of waiting, I got an establishment that turned out to be completely unprepared for the current number of guests! Everything on the food counters is scattered and dirty, the quality of the dishes leaves much to be desired, there is such a mess, and it seems that customers are considered pigs. I tried Mandarin Buffet for the first time this summer after a big workout. My friend recommended it and so I decided to go with. Dinner is a little over $30 per person. I later learned that it is owned by the same owners as Haiku (which closed up permanently in Redmond) and Feast in Tacoma. Feast and Mandarin Buffet serve basically the same food, but feast is about $10 cheaper because of where it's located. Mandarin Buffet has a huge sushi selection. It's obviously not great quality, but much better than I thought it would be. The fish is pre-frozen and you can definitely tell. They also have a Mongolian grill bar where they will cook noodles, meat, vegetables, etc. right in front of you, on order. Other foods they had included: Kung pao pork, green beans, steamed fish, sausage, sticky rice cakes (sweet and savory kind), soup, assorted seafood, choy, rice, and noodles. The best item by far was the braised beef- the one you have to cut with a giant knife at the serving station. The beef is moist, fork tender, and just melts in your mouth. So good! Desserts were meh. Ice cream is the stuff you get at like a school cafeteria- "frozen dessert" inside pre packaged styrofoam cups. The cakes and cookies were also not good and I never trust the chocolate fountain at buffets due to hygienic reasons. Speaking of hygiene, they provide optional, self-serve, disposable plastic gloves next to the serving stations which I thought was nice. Bathrooms were clean too. It was crowded on a weekend evening and somewhat loud. Lots of families and kids were running around, scrambling from one station to another so beware of your surroundings. Since it's a self-serve buffet, there's no server interaction other than when you pay at the register and when they come by to pick up your plates, which they were fairly prompt to do.
