The food was delicious. The service was great. We got the family dinner combination for 2, the fancier one for 21.95 each. It came with a teriyaki chicken and fried prawn appetizer, soup, fried rice and 2 entrees. The reason we chose the more expensive dinner was because it had the honey walnut prawns as an entree choice, which never happens! We got that and the Mongolian beef which was also really good, not chewy like the beef is at many Chinese restaurants. I really enjoyed the flavor of everything. The only thing that was subpar was the fried rice. It had no real flavor and had big, undercooked chunks of white onions. I really hate onions though. So, I saw the good reviews and decided to try this place since Im sick of Mandarin gourmets mediocre food , poor service and HIGH prices. I REALLY wanted to like this place. I got the terriyaki steak on a stick , the combo plate with prawns, snowpeas and broccoli and fried rice with barbecue pork ( paid extra) along with the Barbecue pork FUN noodles as well as the crab cream cheese puffs. I ordered all this food at 430pm when they JUST opened their doors. 1: Terriyaki steak: the first skewer was declicious. The sauce is perfect. However the next 3 skewers were VERY TOUGH to eat. They were Like hard Beef Jerky. 2. Crab puffs: Excellent flavor and perfect frying job. 3. Egg roll with combo prawns and pea pods plate and fried rice with barbecue pork: The eggroll was so incredibly greasy I had to literally squeeze out the oil with a napkin to even eat it. The prawns were not horrible but the rice was not well made and the barbecue pork was meh. The sauce they used with the prawns made the entire concoction inedible. Mushy, bland, and the peapods were OLD. I cook chinese and Tai food at home and grow tai basil and eggplant so I know what old is. HOrrible. The dish tasted very "off" as in "something in the food was old or not fresh. Threw it out. 4. FUN/Barbecue pork. This pork literally was HARD and OLD and flavorless. They clearly overcooked it until it was inedible. I go to the best dim sum places ( NEwport off Wolfe rod in Cupertino and VALCO in Cupertino as well as Ranch 99) and this pork should have been thrown out. The FUN noodles were GOOEY and BLAND. Couldn't eat it. To sum it all up, although some people like certain things I would be HIGHLY unlikely to order anything but the crab wontons again. If the owners read this, please, GET your act together. Only feed your customers the freshest ingredients and dont feed them OLD food. Ty. read more

Was craving chinese food and was not in the mood for another order from the chinese food joint near my house. So I turned to Yelp and searched for another chinese food joint that was well rated and within reasonable distance from my house. I found Mandarin House and was impressed with the reviews from previous patrons. Picked up the phone and ordered take out consisting of three combination plates consisting of Chicken Chow Mein, Sweet & Sour Pork, and General Tso Chicken. When I arrived to pick up my order, it was ready for me and the restaurant staff were professional and courteous. I was quite impressed with both the Chow Mein and General Tso Chicken. The Sweet & Sour Pork was not to my enjoyment. It was just okay tasting. Nevertheless, I recommend this place over the rest of the chinese food joints in San Jose. They advertise their cooking style as "Western Style Chinese Food", which I can agree with. The Salt and Pepper Prawns is a good example. Most other restaurants leave the shell on. Here, they remove the shell, including the head and tail, and fry the prawns with a coat of thick batter. And rather than cooking the prawns with the onions and peppers, it is more like a garnish. It tasted fine, just not what I expected. Another example is their House Deluxe Pan Fried Noodles. I took dish as being Hong Kong style fried noodles. I was surprised the fried noodles were thick (chow mein) and not the thin noodles. There were no Chinese vegetables (usually bok choy) and the gravy was on the thin side. Overall, the food was okay, but nothing special to make me come back. read more

Apparently a huge hit with the septuagenarian crowd, there was no one under the age of 70 when we initially walked in. But no matter, with the high yelp ratings I thought I'd give it a go. This was likely some of the worst food I've ever had. The chicken in the broccoli chicken dish I ordered had a slimy consistency and tasted nothing like chicken. The wait staff, however, was nice enough and offered to switch out our dish. Unfortunately, the chicken in the Kung Pao chicken we ordered had the same issue. First, the staff is very friendly and service has always been solid. Generally, I come in for their lunch specials which are a great value. Pre Covid-19, this was one of my go to lunch places to meet friends. The dishes i love the most are; Honey Walnut Prawns, House Spicy Chicken and Pork Chow Mein. The hot and sour soup, egg rolls are excellent too. Portions are always generous. I would have given Mandarin House 5 stars but the decor on the interior is underwhelming. Went to this restaraunt for the first time last night and was very disappointed . The hostess that took my order seemed a bit rude. We wanted to order a combo style meal to go. The way to order is confusing. For 16.95 you get choice of soup , rice ,egg roll and crab Rangoon then a choice of an entree. You can pick 2 entrees because it feeds 2 people- she said she would not sell me 2 of the same things. I had to pick 2 different items. I wanted Chinese orange chicken and orange beef, she said I could not do that. She also told me that beef and chicken cost the same... ok. I then told her it was my first time there then she said she would "let" me order the entrees I wanted? What? Guess what .. I don't NEED to order anything...next time I'll walk out. Food is pretty good, if you can stomach the wait. It took us nearly 40 mins to get our food. We were told "10-20 minutes." While I understand that "things happen," an update or two would have been nice. We got three dishes and had to leave, so we requested to-go boxes. Three dishes became two (wait, huh?) While we got a 10% discount (which was nice), we also had a server hovering over me while I wrote down the tip and signed (which was not). Hooray! A really good new restaurant in Almaden! Mandarin House brings something we've been waiting on for a long time: fresh, quality Chinese that is flavorful and -- dare I say it -- actually SPICY! Checked them out for the first time tonight for takeout. The owners are a very friendly family. They make it a point to get each patron's first name, as they are clearly hoping to build a business patronized by regulars. They are off to a great start, because we will definitely be back! Food was cooked quickly. Was crazy HOT when we got it home. All the dishes were well received: - Fried dumplings: excellent filling, a bit more doughy than my preference, but yummy all around - Veggie chow mein: nice FRESH veggies in a good noodle mix with good flavor (not spicy, but it's not supposed to be) - Orange chicken: excellent taste, nice light sauce, just the right amount of spicy, and a HUGE portion - Chili chicken: outstanding flavor, loaded with chilis, spicy in all the right ways, also a terrific portion size - Egg rolls: really crisp, rocket hot, and delicious veggie filling - Steamed dumplings: a little meh, but will try pan-frying them tomorrow.... ;P Overall, I highly recommend you try out Mandarin House. Have been here several times over the last month to 6 weeks, both for lunch and to get take out for dinner. Everything we have tried is good so far. We have ordered a variety as my husband only likes beef and pork, my daughter eats only chicken and shrimp and I am vegetarian. The tofu dishes are really good, the sauces flavorful without being too salty or fatty. The chicken chow mein is really good according to my picky daughter. Pork and beef dishes are good according to the old guy. Everything I have picked up smells delish! The service is very friendly and they are trying hard to remember you when you come in. I have now been here 4 times. They consistently make great food. There are not that many good restaurants in Almaden, so when a new one pops up, we all should rejoice. I call this place when I'm leaving CIty Sports (the new one at 85/Almaden Expy) and when I arrive the food is ready for me at the front. I tend to get the General Tso's Chicken, Chicken Chow Mein, and Shrimp Fried Rice. All of those dishes are superb and I can't wait to try even more! My husband, who has been to China a few too many times and refuses to eat "Chinese" food in the states, likes the food here. Now *that* says a lot. read more

Honestly it took a little bit to get served but the restaurant was really busy with take out orders and big families, But we were patient and it payed off. The food tasted really fresh and once our order was taken the food was definitely worth the wait! This place is great - I'm so glad to finally have found a decent local Chinese restaurant. Food has been surprisingly good and the staff are friendly. We've never dined in, we usually pick up but a few times we've used Doordash. Hubby loves the pork fried rice and mongolian beef. I like their fried dumplings and black pepper chicken. This is our go to for Chinese food. We always tend to order the same thing Hot and Sour Soup, Mongolian Beef and Orange Chicken. We venture out and order other dishes but we always come back to these three. I have had their Eggplant Pork Clay Pot which is delicious as well. Their food is always consistent. This was our first visit to Mandarin House! I appreciate the extensive menu which made it a bit harder to select since everything sounded great. Since it was our first trip here we selected some of everyone's favorites. The Wor Wonton Soup, Beef with Broccoli and Shredded Pork with Garlic Sauce was very good as well as their House Fried rice. The Shredded Pork with Garlic Sauce was a little too sweet for me but overall good! Their meats, shrimp and sauces were extremely good. I would definitely go back and try their seafood and other meat dishes. So wish this was in my neighborhood but so glad to find this restaurant with a great variety. Everyone had a great experience. I really want this place to do well since it's so close to home. Therefore I'm bumping my 3.5 stars up to 4. I've been twice so far (take-out only), and wasn't super impressed. Portions and prices are on par with nearby places. Flavor is mediocre. The orange beef is the only dish with good flavor, others are very bland. Wonton soup is better than average. Finally a good Chinese restaurant comes to the Cambrian/Blossom Hill area. We received a flyer in the mail so we decided to check them out during lunch over the weekend. My expectations were low but I were pleasantly surprised. We ordered the Prawns with Snow Peas and Broccoli and Prawns in Lobster Sauce and both were very well prepared. We also had a chance to chat with one of the owners -- a husband and wife team. There were only 4 parties of 2 in the restaurant so it was quiet so service was on point. Decor is new and clean. Prices are typical. We're looking forward to returning soon. read more

We've gotten take out a few times and dined-in at this place once, and the food is generally really good. It's a cute little place, and service is quick and courteous. The Mongolian Beef, Broccoli Beef and Pork Chow Mein are especially good! The egg rolls and some of the chicken dishes we've tried are not amazing, but fried rice is so delicious and well seasoned. This place is also well priced compared to some others in the area. This has become our "go-to" for Chinese Food recently and we're excited to try out more! read more
