Mandarin House use to be called Golden Garden Restaurant, which has since went out if business, a restaurant I gave a 1 star rating. The restaurant has been completely remodeled, new ownership, very clean, freshly made food when you order it. I had a dinner combination plate (rare to find) for about $11 which had sweet and sour pork, egg roll and fried rice. It was a very generous portion that was obviously freshly made. The sauce was a bit different tasting almost like it was honey based-and there was a bit more breading than I like, but pork was excellent, as was the egg roll, fried rice and Ice Tea. I visited the restaurant around 7 PM on a Sunday night-it was pretty busy. It appears to be family run, as the young teenage girls and other lady were trying so hard to please everyone. I looked at some of the other dishes people had ordered, everything looked great! I do want to comment on a previous review-there is no background music, you hear everyone talking. I brought this up to my server, who told me they had none. I am not going to mark them down for this, although I agree-there needs to be some soft, relaxing music to mask the conversations, cell phones, kids playing games/music on tablets. Good place, it's tucked in the corner of a plaza, you can't really see it unless you drive to the end. This place is definitely family owned, they have kids working for them...which I'm sure it's their children. Don't expect super top notch service, but decent service. Parking is plenty. The place is somewhat small but does the job. All the dishes I got were good. I decided to get the family combo and my only complaint is they use a decent amount of oil in their cooking. The egg rolls were dripping in oil, disappointed.... But the main dishes are good, all flavorful and decently portioned but some dishes are a bit skimpy on the meat. read more

Sister from the Central Valley shows up this last Sunday and she enjoys good Chinese food. So we ventured to mandarin house for some quality food. None of us were disappointed as the food was delicious. House chow mien was solid with plenty of meat. Kung pao chicken was sweet and loaded with chicken and veggies. Shrimp and walnuts dish was sweet and tangy. Pork fried rice was exactly how I like it with plenty of protein. Food was served up quickly and hot. I found this place during my search to find my "go to places" once COVID and work from home situation hit. I wasn't familiar with very many local places, especially for lunch, as I work on the peninsula. I tried several Chinese restaurants nearby and have found my go to Chinese food. I get take out lunch here at least once a week. Their lunch specials are great 1 person meals with plenty of food and a pretty good price. My favorites so far are Mongolian beef and honey walnut chicken, and I'm enjoying the pork chow mein as well. I've personally found it to be the best Chinese food anywhere near Almaden and several of my neighbors now agree as well. My review comes from a person who enjoys "westernized" Chinese food (deep fried and covered in sauce please!). While I haven't found any items to be bad, I haven't enjoyed the Szechuan Beef, Garlic Chicken, or Chicken and Curry as much, more due to the style it's cooked. If I had to suggest a change for them, it would be to add more sauces to the lunch menu for the chicken/pork lunch item. It would be great to have things like Lemon, Orange, and others. read more

I wanted some authentic Chinese food and turned to yelp for some recommendations. Perhaps it was pretty telling that this place is located across the street from a senior home... We stopped by for lunch and was promptly seated. I noticed I was the only customer of Asian descent in the restaurant... and that's usually not a great sign. We ordered the shrimp fried rice, basil garlic chicken, and kung pao chicken. As mentioned in other reviews, the portions are large, but that's really all that this place has going for it. The shrimp fried rice was edible. The basil garlic chicken was battered and fried tiny pieces of chicken drenches in a salty sauce that wasn't good. The kung pao chicken was not spicy AT ALL... It was more sweet and sour than "Kung Pao". Those authentic Chinese flavors were lacking in every dish. Everything was either, too salty, too sour, or just bland. Also, you can tell the quality of the ingredients just weren't there. I was actually pretty hungry and had high hopes for this place. Needless to say, I didn't enjoy the food, but ate purely for sustenance. I will not be back. I'm still on a quest to find some quality, authentic Chinese food! read more

I haven't been to Mandarin House in a long time, but I was pleased!! We ordered take out and the woman we ordered from was so kind on the phone. Our food was ready when we got there and everything was correct. We got a lot of food and all of it was tasty. I loved the number of veggie options and enjoyed my garlic eggplant and veggie chow mein. The meat eaters loved the pork pot stickers and the broccoli beef, but were not overwhelmingly impressed with the orange chicken. We'd definitely go back! read more

My spouse works in the area and frequents the establishment and they are always nice, recognize us, and are always willing to make small adjustments to the menu items for us. I've eaten at this place several times since moving to the area and quite like it! It's about what you'd expect from an American-Chinese restaurant. Don't go in thinking this is going to be authentic Asian cuisine :p It doesn't knock my socks off, but I also haven't had anything here that I thought was bad (except maybe the Kung Pao). Here's a quick run down of some of the things I've tried: *Mongolian beef and chicken: my favorite thing on the menu so far. The meat tastes a little smokey and the veggies have a nice crunch. *Orange chicken: Just okay. Very sweet. *General Tso's chicken: Also super sweet. It's okay for a few bites, but I find I get tired of it quickly due to the sweetness level. *Fried rice: I like it! Maybe a tad bit bland, but it's a good, standard fried rice. *Lo Mein: I was disappointed in this. It was just kind of bland. *Kung Pao Chicken: This was one of the first things I tried, and I didn't like it. I remember the sauce being kind of... ketchup-y? And sweet? It's been a while since I've had it, but I don't think it impressed me. Not the typical brown sauce for Kung Pao. Portion sizes are pretty good and prices are about what I expect for the area. Service is fast! When I call in an order, it's always been ready in 15-20 minutes for pick up. The people who work there are friendly. This was our first time here as we are visiting San Jose. The restauranyl was fantastic! The staff were very sweet and helpful and the food was fantastic! We were celebrating our kids engagement and ordered 11 dishes ranging from veggie egg rolls to minced chicken lettuce cups, Kung pao tofu, lemon chicken, Mongolian beef, sweet and sour pork, bbq pork fried rice, fish filet in garlic sauce, veggie chow mein an veggie chow fun. Amazing food and experience. We got a huge variety of dishes, both vegetarian and meat, and 10 out of 11 of them were incredible. Fantastic flavors and all dishes were made fresh, served quickly. I grew up eating Chinese food in east LA and this place's quality matches that of the food I grew up eating. Definitely worth checking out. This used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant, sadly not anymore. We've been coming here since they opened, the food was always delicious but it has declined in the last year or so. Even before Covid we noticed that their takeout food was not as good as when we dined in so always dined in but we can't because they still don't have indoor dining. The quality of the food and the portions have definitely gone down And they aren't very accommodating. I recently ordered a rice plate to go and was going to split it with my friend so I asked for them to split it into two containers they refused so I asked if I could buy another container and split it myself she still refused! I don't understand that at all. I have asked if I could buy a half salad she said no so I asked if I could buy the lunch portion salad to go with my soup and she said no again. I don't get it but, whatever. ‍ I ordered hot and sour soup today and it does not even taste like it used to, it taste more like egg drop soup. When we picked up some dinner to go recently the beef in the chow mein and the Mongolian beef were over cooked and hard, the rice lacked flavor. Their food is too expensive to not be yummy. We were so happy to find this place after our favorite Chinese restaurant closed their doors. We have really enjoyed all the different items we've tried. I especially like the fact that the shrimp (prawns) with/broccoli & snow peas are not over cooked and rubbery. We just ordered on a Sunday for the first time and I noticed a difference in the chow mein flavor. It wasn't quite as flavorful and a little drier than I normally get it, but still delicious. We also like their special diet section. There are a handful of regular menu items, but the sauces are on the side and most items are steamed. read more

Orange chicken is small pieces lightly battered so it doesn't go soggy, even after a few days in the fridge. Chow mien isn't too oily like a lot of places have. Decent Westernized Chinese food. Probably more a 3.5. Better than many I've tried in the South Bay. The House Spicy chicken was my favorite and the Mongolian beef also good. Honey Walnut prawns mayo sauce was a bit too much like plain mayo. But i think you get a decent serving. I did not care for the WorWonTon Soup (comparing to what i get at Ho CHow Fremont). The website says you get egg roll with lunch special , but you do not. And it's about 50/50 ratio to rice. I will probably come back here, and order off the regular menu. I also think it is hard to be at your best coming off Covid19 closure, and not having the full customer base. read more
