Later on the original order came, but still It was not like the photo in the menu. No big deal at this point. Food is great, great flavors and spices with the lamb chicken and rice. It is a bit insane to be charged 30% for any group of 4 or more; 4 is not even typically considered a large group. TLDR; this place has potential! The food is solid. But I'd recommend waiting until they get more settled and figure out service to visit. Tip/service charge will be 30% for large groups. A beautiful space. They really did a great job decorating. However, with the plastic plates, cups, and table covers (along with some other touches), the place ends up feeling more like a well-decorated cafeteria than a classy restaurant. Which may be the point, but I wasn't expecting it. You are quite packed into the dining space, making it a bit uncomfortable and loud. They are still figuring out service. Nice people, but they're lacking communication as we had three different people trying to seat us. I was excited to try this new restaurant in the neighborhood, but unfortunately I didn't have a great experience. Hopefully they're able to improve soon. For now, I'm being very generous with my rating for this below-average dining experience. Service was slow, which is expected for a new restaurant that's still figuring it out, so I'll ignore that for now. The strangest thing about the service was the lack of water. We asked for some water for our group of 4 people, and we just got handed 1 single Kirkland bottled water. Why didn't they just serve plain tap water? Also, while waiting for our dinner, I went to use the restroom and discovered that there was absolutely no soap or paper! Immediately, I was concerned about how unsanitary this place is. Kinda gross to think that the staff is handling food without basics like soap. For food, we ordered the #1 mixed dishes of haneeth, mandi lamb, and mandi chicken. Honestly, all the meat items were very bland and lacked spices/seasoning. At least the lamb was tender and fell off the bones. But my friend said his chicken was quite dry. The hummus was quite literally the blandest hummus I've ever eaten. Although the tandoor (Yemeni bread) that came with it was pretty good and quite large. Went here for the first time on Thursday with my husband and we loved the food. We ordered the fahsa, meat sambusas, chicken Mandi, lamb soup, and babaganoush. Everything was well seasoned, hot, and delicious. One thing I would prefer is a fluffier basmati rice because the rice used in the chicken Mandi is on the thicker and dryer side so it couldn't soak in the flavors as much. The service is great, everyone was very nice and helpful. The ambiance is beautiful, I love all the restaurant is decorated and does a great job of showcasing Yemeni culture. I would like to give recognition first to the wonderful staff, who are genuinely kind and welcoming, and to the beautifully designed setting, which is truly stunning. The restaurant itself is absolutely gorgeous, and I say this with sincere appreciation and respect for Yemen and its people. That said, my overall experience did not fully reflect the beauty of the space. One concern was the use of very thin plastic water cups--one of which actually broke in my hand--as well as plastic plates and very small plastic containers for salsa and other sides. This created a noticeable contrast between the elegant atmosphere and the way the food and drinks were served. At times, it felt inconsistent with what one would expect from such a visually refined restaurant. Another point of concern was the pricing, which felt high in relation to the overall presentation, especially given the use of disposable plastic tableware. This made the experience feel somewhat mismatched in terms of value. Finally, I found the food itself to be underwhelming compared to expectations set by the environment and pricing. One dish was boiling, and the Mandi itself was completely cold. Overall, the restaurant has significant potential. I have been waiting for this Yemeni restaurant to open for a nearly year!! Today I happened to see them finally open so I could not resist to walk in and try their food!! It's such a beautiful restaurant and a lot of people were dining in already!! I walked in around 5:30pm without any reservation. I was seated pretty quick:) Food - I ordered HRADA OF SHRIMP, MUTABBAL, (a huge Yemenis bread came with it) and KARAK TEA. MUTABBAL was very flavorful and so delicious!!! I loved KARAK TEA very much, too!! Service - all of their staff were very kind and nice. However perhaps because I went there during very busy time, service was a bit slow and I could not get my tea until I asked them for the the 3rd time ( the 3rd time is the charm, y'all!!) . I did not get any water or the tea until after I finished eating my meals so I was super dehydrated, lol. The staff offered me if I would like to have the tea to go, and I finally got the liquid intake at the end. The tea was really good. I wish I could have it with my meals but that's ok I understand that they were super busy. There were many customers waiting outside. Happy to see the local business flourishing! read more

Three stars went to beef fahsa alone. The decor is unique showing a lot of its culture. There are varieties of seating: on chair with table, floor bench with table. They also have upper section which could use as private party. Beef fahsa is very tasty. The bread is a bit burnt and the lamb mandi is okay. It was not really authentic because they did not smoke it underground like it's named that's what I was told. It was a pleasant setting. Service was lacking maybe because we went too early because they were cleaning on the side while we were eating. Also, the dessert we ordered was already unavailable even though they just opened. The tea we ordered came very late and last. Kinda nice to drink last since it was very smooth and washed down the lamb taste. I would go back to try another dish though maybe fish fahsa for sure. My friends and I ate here during Saturday lunch. We got a big table for a large group, which was great because our small kids could crawl around on the cushions. You need to push the call button in order to have the server come to the table. We were blown away with how succulent the lamb was and the pilaf was well cooked. This place finally opened after what seemed like years of construction. I was pessimistic about their chances. Boy, was it worth the wait. We had a spectacular late lunch/early dinner while Porchfest was going on. Tasty, filling, easy, inventive flavor profiles, simply excellent all around. The interior and ambience are transportive, feeling very distinct from other Valencia establishments. Gorgeous patterns and cool art. Fascinating Yemeni cultural footage playing with closed captioning on. The food was the showstopper - get the cheese sambosa, the shrimp dish, and especially a side of the rice which my wife went crazy for. The bread reminded me of some high quality pizza dough with some chew. I took some home and had it with dinner later. Get the banana pudding dessert, our server recommends it and we were so grateful! But the service was slow, which was sort of expected for a newly opened restaurant. It would be 3.5 star in my opinion and I am hoping that they improve on the service aspect. One thing I really wanted them to know is that it was strange to have served Kirkland brand bottled water and been charged for them ($2/bottle.) Perhaps that is customary done in Yemen? We were expecting good old Hetch Hetchy water in a glass. It would have been nice to be asked if we wanted a bottled water or tap water. At minimum, please choose a nicer glass bottle water like evian or tapo chico for the table to charge $4-5. It has a potential, and I will try again in a while to see. read more

I've only been in once, and ordered delivery a second time, but this is my new favorite restaurant in SF. I've tried 2 different lamb dishes, the Mandi and the Haneeth. When we were eating there I kept seeing lone men ordering the Haneeth so thats what I got delivered. Oh my! It is even more flavorful than the Mandi. I highly recommend the Haneeth. The Saltehs are great, though very much less spicy than at the other Yemeni restaurant in town (see below). We've tried the lamb and veggie one. Their version of Foul was quite unique. More tomatoey than I'm used to, but also more flavorful. I LOVE the 2.99 lamb soup. Its just a small cup of lamb broth, but it is heavily spiced. I'm assuming from the drippings of all the lamb they are cooking. Its a great deal and very heart warming. I really like their Mutabbal (yemeni version of baba ganoush it seems). The gigantic bread that comes with every dish has a good smokey flavor from where they char it over a grill. The white sauce they give with the meal is real tasty too. A thin yogurt? with mint or fenugreek? The red sauce, I was less into, almost like a mild mexican salsa. But the idea to use them to combat the richness of all the lamb makes sense. The portions are all pretty large and this is without even getting into their group sized offerings. The restaurant itself is very ornate and must have cost a fortune to build out. Most of the bad reviews are about service and yes, they really need to work on that. Our main waiter was devoid of emotion though relatively efficient. I just don't like the idea of lowering a rating for service. I've been to too many great Chinese restaurants to be worried about being coddled by some smarmy outback steakhouse style waiter. They have several large tables where you sit on the floor and take off your shoes. Fun for a larger group. I feel bad for Yemen Kitchen, now known as Yemeni Kabab on Taylor street. The owner/chef there cooked my wedding dinner 15 years ago and he makes great food, but that location just kills business for him. Dined at Mandi House for lunch. Only about 4-5 tables had customers sitting and two of the tables had finished their meals. There was no one at the entrance to greet or seat us. We had to basically almost walk to the counter before we were told to pick any table to sit at. We were brought menus and told to ring a bell for service. We ordered chicken mandi, lamb mandi, fouttoush, fries, and hrada. Food was bland and there was a lack of spices. The rice tasted like it was just warmed slightly. The fattoush had a piece of plastic wrap in it. We had to ask for waters because they didn't bring any. Lastly when the bill came, the server let me know our party of 4 was considered large so they had to add an 18 or 20% gratuity. I can't remember the exact percent as the server was busy telling us to give them five stars. Also we were asked if we wanted to add anything extra on top of the "large party gratuity" they already charged. Since when is a party of 4 considered large? I don't think I'll dine here again as there was lack of service, crazy large party gratitude charge, and flavorless food. read more

Mandi House is one of the best new restaurant openings I've been to in SF in a while, and I'm delighted that they're now in my neighborhood. Their space on Valencia is beautiful, large, and inviting, with a lively atmosphere that still feels comfortable as you can actually hear the people at your table. I just went tonight (a Friday night) and the dining room was full of energy, and many of the other patrons appeared to be Yemeni, which is always a good indicator. I went with a group of friends, including a Yemeni friend who was genuinely impressed by how authentic everything tasted. Every dish we ordered was just really excellent. Unfortunately I'm not remembering any of the names, but I'll try to describe them. The lamb was incredibly tender and succulent, cooked perfectly and full of flavor. The mixed rice dish we shared (which had chicken it it), was very aromatic and went well with everything. We also had a spicy red fish that was beautifully seasoned, and a yogurt-based dish mixed with pieces of fried bread that was so good we kept going back for more. Sounds weird but you have to try it. Even the drinks stood out. The teas were wonderful, and the mint lemonade was fresh, bright, and refreshing. I was shocked at just how consistently good everything was. There wasn't a weak dish on the table. The food was just delicious in an *interesting* (the good kind of interesting) and new and intriguing way. On top of that, everyone working there was super warm, welcoming, and accommodating throughout the meal (went with a well-behaved kid and a baby, and everyone was very helpful on that front). Would never step foot in this establishment again, I will give my super honest review, I see other reviews struggled with the same thing as me. Came in first thing in the morning, like probably an hour after opening, barely 2 tables there, not busy at all. Got greeted by our server I believe his name is Mohamed, young little kid, but with a big attitude. Definitely doesn't fit as a store front. Anyways, got the worst service you can ever imagine, took about 25 minutes to come check on us if we're ready to order after we sat, we were ready to order 5 minutes after we sat down. Anyways, ordered soup, and water to start, none have came until after the food arrived, they got the soup first, then asked for the water like literally 3 times, till it finally got there after food was already done. Whenever he passes by our table, he looks the other way so we wont ask him for anything, I kid you not, he did not check on our table for the whole hour and half not a single time, only to drop off the food, and water. Thats literally it. The food was not fresh, I can tell it's probably some left over meat from the previous night. Anyways, this server adds 20% mandatory tip to our bill, thats when it all clicked for me, now I understand why the horrible service, bcz he's guaranteed a tip. We were only a party of 4, and I never been to a restaurant where they add mandatory tip for party of 4. But at least when they do, you're supposed to get a great service regardless if the food bad or good. That 20% was over $40, which he really doesn't deserve a single dollar tip.
