Got to try their food at an event that was held at the Arboretum in Arcadia. Since I have gluten intolerant, there was only 1 item that I could have which was their popular garlic noodle. They substituted the noodle with rice noodle. Even with rice noodle, it's not lacking any flavor. It was sooo good and don't skip the cilantro because I think it brings out the flavor and a great companion to the noodle. They're usually at Smorgasburg at the Row downtown LA on Sundays. It had a soft, airy texture and a delicious umami thanks to the spicy sauce it came with. Man Eating Plant surprised the hell out of me. If you have ever been a skeptic of plant-based food, you HAVE to try them out, because everything is very good. This location is somewhat hidden in Gardena. From Wednesdays to Fridays, they operate out of this "test kitchen," which used to be where The Pan was located, based on the signage above the building. On other days, you can find them at the Topanga Social Hall (which is an insane drive away), or other pop-up events, including Smorgasburg. What drew me in immediately was the fried shroom bao. They use huge pieces of king oyster mushroom, dip them in beer batter, and them deep fry them to golden perfection. The cashew hoisin sauce paired with the mushroom and the soft bun made this one of, if not THE BEST, bao I've ever had. I love duck bao so much and I would genuinely consider only eating this mushroom bao for the rest of my life if I was given the option. The only thing really holding me back from giving them a glowing 5-stars is the price. Two fried shroom baos cost $16...and that's with no side, and no drink. That's already in the same ballpark cost of two In-N-Out combos...which is pretty rough when you put that into perspective. I was, by no means, anywhere near full after the two shroom baos. In fact, I ordered the Char Siu BBQ Baos as well, but I honestly wished I had just gotten the shroom baos. While it did taste quite like the 'real deal,' I felt like the pulled mushroom texture was exhaustive. I also tried the Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup, and I was a fan. The broth was light yet flavorful and the noodles/toppings were fresh and crisp. Next time, I really want to try the Crispy Enoki, as I love fried mushrooms. Looks like an amazing side dish. But again, assuming you get two shroom baos + crispy enoki, that's already a $27 meal, which is pretty crazy for the amount of food you get. But don't knock it 'til you try it. read more

I was able to try out Maneatplant at a local festival called Puff con where I was hired to double Dutch with a few other ladies. Now I had the shroom boa. I love friend, spicy, sweet and savory so this was my jam. Fluffy bun, Crispy mushrooms, seasoned to perfection and topped with spicy savory chili oil. Definitely had that Taiwanese, Chinese and Japanese flavor fusion going. Now I hate lines and I'm sure it's not much they can do about that but continue working as fast as they can to pump the food out. Parked in front of Donna Jean was this bad ass looking food bus that had a number of folks hustling and bustling all around it. There were clamoring voices and bumpin' tunes so I had to see what it was all about. Luckily I asked a nearby couple what the commotion was and they gave me the low down on what was cookin'. They highly highly recommended the garlic noodz and I gladly complied. $15 and about 15 minutes later came this nicely sized platter of food from the gods. Holy expletives these noodz were freaking AMAZING AMAZING! I'm talking easily the best noodz I've ever had. Not that I'm some crazy noodle aficionado or anything but I'm pretty confident these would rank high up on almost anyone's list. They were spicy, deftly seasoned, and had the perfect toothiness. Also, the accompanying Chinese broccoli was just slightly tender and cooked to absolute perfection. I will dream of these noodz until the next time I see Maneatingplant again! I tried this food from one of their food trucks touring Love Long Beach Festival 2023 and I fell in love with their good. It makes it easy to become a vegetarian when food is so flavorful and delicious! I tried the Fried Shroom Bao and it was so flavorful and crispy. Tasted better than deep fried chicken and it was made out of mushroom. Their musubi tastes better than regular spam musubi. It was nice to see a food truck with such friendly representatives providing excellent service, having a great time at the festival in a very chill atmosphere. I'd heard a lot of really good things about their shroom bao - I got around to it a couple weeks ago, when they were at The Hawk. They're a bit pricey, $14 for 2 bao, but they *are* absolutely excellent. I wish they were cheaper, because I could absolutely have eaten a couple more, but not necessarily because I was that *hungry*, more because they were delicious. The mushrooms are perfectly fried and seasoned, they *do* have a nice satisfying bite just like shrimp, the dough is perfectly fluffy, and the sauces and veggies in it were all so perfectly fresh, it definitely felt like I was *eating* something worth $14. Went really nicely with a watermelon margarita from The Hawk, too! *Absolutely* my only complaint was value - this is yet another in a long line of cases where I would have liked to give 4 1/2 stars, just cause, for $14, the bao weren't tiny, but they weren't huge, either. One of my favorite food trucks ever. I always look forward to seeing them at the OC Vegan Fest in Santa Ana. Them garlic noods are out of this world! I love that they put a ton of fried garlic and veggies in it. Make sure to ask for extra chili oil for extra spice and flavor. We got to also try their Lion's Mane last time, which was really good as well. It had big mushrooms with cucumber, garlic rice and this yummy ginger sauce. I'm not too sure if this is on their permanent menu but it is def worth a try too if you are able to get it! Went to Trademark Brewery in Long Beach on a Monday and this food truck was there in the patio serving up some amazing vegan food! It's an order at the window, pick up and sit down with your beers process but fairly quick and efficient. We got the sichuan steamies, musubi and garlic noodles. Everything tasted great! The garlic noodles were great for sharing and so were the dumpings. The only negative is that I wish the musubi had more sauce, but then again I'm a sauce person and I always like extra especially for my musubi. I was super happy to see Maneatingplant at the Vegan popup this weekend. Sadly my favorite dish which is the shroom bao was not edible. The mushroom was not cooked enough and very tough and hard to chew. The crispy coating and sauce is always good but the mushroom itself seemed to be barely defrosted from frozen. I could squeeze the excess water out of the mushroom and it was rubbery and hard to eat. The Bao and garlic noodles are my go to dishes and this was not the usual quality. The musubi was the only good thing during this visit. $18 for 2 shroom bao was on the pricey side and I couldn't believe how disappointing it was. When checking out all of the food joints at Smorgasburg LA, there wasn't much of a line at Man Eating Plant. It made us a little hesitant as usually there's usually long lines at the places with the great food and little to no lines at the places with less than stellar food. We're not sure why Man Eating Food had no line, but their food was definitely better than stellar! We ended up getting the Lions Mane and the Spam Musubi. The Lions Mane looks like it has plain rice and very sparse ingredients. Once you dig in you realize that the rice is flavored, no clue what it's in it but it's amazing, and the mushroom, cilantro and cucumber toppings are absolutely perfect with it! This particular dish came with two sauces. One red sauce that was extremely hot, and one green sauce that was absolutely to die for! We only wish we had more of the green sauce. The inside of the spam musubi was delicious. There is a little bit of a creamy, spicy sauce that is great. We weren't really fans of the full seaweed wrapping, I think we would've liked it better if it was more of a tie instead of a sushi roll as the seaweed overpowers the rest of the food. However, everything we did try was stand out delicious.
