So disappointing compared to previous experiences. Came here for lunch for the first time this past weekend. It's been ages since I've been here but usually have a lovely dinner experience. We were the only ones seated for lunch and was given the dinner price menu with no mention of lunch prices. When inquired about that, the waitress said the lunch menu was online. Come to see the bill, the prices did not reflect the online lunch menu. Had to speak the waitress again about lunch prices and had her call the manager because prices should have reflected what we were told to refer to online. In addition to the problem with the menu prices, we were the only customers and it took an hour to get our food and had to remind them about getting our pomme fries which came after our main course. The mussels and soup were on point, but you won't be too impressed if you get main course items other than mussels. We started with snob mussels and lobster bisque soup. The soup was excellent, and the mussels had a good sauce to them. I don't know if I'd be satisfied by a meal of it though. My parents and I ordered 3 different dishes but I tried them each. The loin of pork wrapped in bacon, the Carbonnade Flamande, and the bacon wrapped whole trout. The bacon wrapped items were nothing to brag about and the Carbonnade Flamande was too salty to even eat, and trust me, I eat really salty. It's not often a 25 year old has high blood pressure. Maybe they just messed it up this night because it was so busy? I don't know... but we had to take it home and modify it some... sauce ended up being pretty good decent. The soda was a 3 dollar 8oz coke bottle... I mean it looked fancy in the bottle, but seriously? soda is super cheap, can you give me some more? A perfect dinner! They have so many wonderful preparations of Mussels and Trappiste to match! One of my favorite restaurant!

One of my favorite places for an elegant dining experience. Thoughtfully prepared with sauces and spices that enhance the dish. Although I am not fond of mussels, there are plenty of other dishes to entice and satisfy. We've enjoyed their mushroom and lobster soups. Very rich in flavor. The risotto special was also very rich and creamy with just the right amount of seafood. A very generous portion. The fish was done nicely with a very crispy skin. I was impressed when presented with a special knife to remove the skin. Haven't seen one of those since high school etiquette class -- most of us were destined to be servants, so we had to know our cutlery. The desserts were quite generous and delicious. The mousse tastes of genuine cream and chocolate. The chocolate tartine was satisfyingly dense. This is not a restaurant for a quick meal. Service is not hurried or pushed. You'll have time for conversation and sharing of bites. It's hidden away in a strip mall and if you're using a GPS, you may have difficulty locating it. Coming from the south using Georgia Ave, I think there will always be a U-turn. Parking is tight. read more

Update during pandemic. I have ordered delivery & the meals continue to be excellent. Now, MPis is open for lunch on my GrubHub app with sandwich & sub selections and standard menu items at discounted prices (probably a lesser portion compared with dinner?). Today I ordered delivery for steak & cheese subs. I failed to note it has hot peppers!! My body screams inside when I partake of spicy foods but hubby loves anything spicy, so he had the whole sub. He was disappointed by the toasted but hard sub roll that was burned on top at one end. The bottom of the sub was soggy but I find this to be expected with delivered subs. read more

We came for dinner on a Tuesday. The restaurant was pretty empty allowing us to pick our table. We split a bottle of half priced wine and a 3 course special: any appetizer (soup, salad, app or sausage), any entree (including mussels) and any dessert for $34.95. We aren't the largest eaters, so it was more than enough food for the two of us. Our server was wonderful. He was extremely attentive, and offered numerous suggestions since it was my first visit. He gave us complimentary bread & butter, and was in no rush to drop our check letting us enjoy a nice evening chatting. We ordered: -hearts of palm salad- a petite salad stacked elegantly and tasted good -snob mussel pot & frites- Since the chef's specialty is the lobster bisque, we had to go this route. The mussels were plentiful and decent size, but a number of them were gritty (ew!). They tasted good but nothing out of this world to warrant the overprice. The frites were crispy and hot but entirely missing any seasoning (salt or pepper) and served with mayo (just like they would be in Belgium!) -pot of chocolate- I think the other guest would have licked the bowl if I let her. I went here last night and really enjoyed the food! The service was fast and friendly, I loved the recommendations that the server gave us off the menu. The duck special and rack of lamb were on point! The lamb may be the best flavored and cooked that I have had in a very long time. The ambiance is quaint, the place is small so you should either make reservations or go during an off time to get a table. We got one pretty quick on Friday night around 745pm. Wow! Amazing takeout sandwiches for lunch with their lunch special. My husband ordered the Reuben with corned beef and I ordered the slaw sandwich with pastrami. Both were excellent. The sandwiches and sides were still hot when we brought them home. Highly recommend!! read more

Mannequin Pis is my FAVORITE restaurant in Montgomery County. I heard the owners changed. The owners may have changed but the quality is still superior. I had the smoked salmon with fresh caper berries and a cream friche (sp?) My God, I wish I had some now. I had mussels with the mushroom base and frites, so good. The house made bread is phenomenal. My friend and I both got the 1/2 kilo of mussels, Provençale and Snob, with a side of garlic fries. They were some of the best mussels we have ever tasted. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive. It doesn't look like much from the outside (in a small strip of restaurants) and could use a little updating, especially the entrance, but I'm so glad we decided to give it a try. Since my 100th review was dedicated to an amazing meal my wife treated me to on my birthday, I thought it fitting I celebrate my 200th review with a meal that I treated her to on hers. While this may not seem the most likely of places to "treat" someone, and a beer dinner is not your typical female indulgence, I'm fortunate enough not to be married to a typical woman. She loves the things I love, and for that I love her more, so a 4 course Belgian beer dinner that just happened to fall in the middle of the week on her birthday was more perfect than I could have hoped. After the long trek out to Olney though, I think she was beginning to wonder if she would ever get to eat again at all. This place isn't really convenient for most people that live in or around DC, but it's well worth the drive once you get there. As soon as we stepped inside this quaint little restaurant, it was clear that the focus was beer (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wedoitforlove/4146056400/in/set-72157622902805616/), as the walls were lined with various bits of paraphernalia and point-of-sale items. It wasn't overly kitschy or poorly done though, each piece seemed to have a purpose. The space really is small, and almost cramped, but the tables are spaced far enough apart to still have intimate discourse. The first course was a seafood au gratin with mussels, scallops, shrimp & parmesan cheese (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wedoitforlove/4145290159/in/set-72157622902805616/), paired with Wittekerke's wheat beer. The beer was a good bit lighter than I prefer, but the seafood mix was fantastic. The aroma was really mystifying, a perfect blend of strong shellfish odors with freshly grated parmesan. It was intense, but still well controlled. Course number two was a pan seared, oven roasted halibut (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wedoitforlove/4145291339/in/set-72157622902805616/) over black truffle & portobello mushroom vinaigrette topped with seaweed salad and paired with Kasteel Triple. One of my favorite things about halibut is its ability to adapt to almost any flavor, and it really picked up the black truffle and ran with it. For a generally mild fish this thing rocked, and the portobello notes were very nice as well, keeping the dish very earthy. The beer was solid, a good entry-level Belgian style. The next dish was a pan seared filet mignon (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wedoitforlove/4146051416/in/set-72157622902805616/), wrapped with bacon, over baby vegetables, with pommes croquettes in shallot & Kasteel Dunkel beer reduction, paired with the Kasteel Dunkel (Donker per the label). This is probably my favorite beer from Kasteel, and one of the better dunkels out there, although it can be a bit sweet, it is still very full bodied with a good bit of malt, a great combination for beef. Adding the beer into the sauce that went with the beef was an ingenious idea, something I do from time to time at home to really get a cohesive flavor between your food and your glass. The filet was the perfect size for a multi-course tasting menu, and cooked just right. They even gave Nicole her bacon on the side so she could pass it to me, awesome! The dessert course was a classic Belgian "pot au chocolate" paired with Kasteel Rouge (or Kriek if you're outside the US). The chocolate dish may seem a bit simplistic (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wedoitforlove/4146054674/in/set-72157622902805616/), but once you start taking bites and realize the quality of the chocolate used you quickly understand why this is so popular. Pairing this dish with the Rouge (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wedoitforlove/4146054674/in/set-72157622902805616/) was brilliant, as I found it very much unlike other "fruit based" beers in that the fruit is just a component rather than the driving factor. Aromatically the cherries are the dominant factor, but on the palette they fade away somewhat, letting the wood take over some, and even with some slight hints of marzipan, a great combination with this dessert. I have no doubt that if this restaurant were located in DC it would be one of the most popular, if not the most popular, Belgian spots in town. They easily rival Brasserie Beck, one of my favorite all around places to eat in DC, with an almost as impressive beer menu. The major difference? Price. Granted being in Olney helps their costs dramatically, but they are drastically lower than Beck in both food and beer costs, with their pairing dinners usually running anywhere between 50-75 per person depending on what beers are being offered. read more

We came for the escargot and kilo pot of "Snob" mussels that everyone raves about. You know what? They weren't all that. Now that I have been here, I have satisfied my curiosity and do not need to return. I'm not saying these two items were bad, I just think they were overhyped and a tad overpriced. The escargot was very salty. Perhaps it was the parmesan cheese coating. They were piping hot. They didn't come with toasted bread points like most places, so we used the house French bread which was terrible for a Belgian restaurant. The first basket had three stale pieces. The other baskets had four, hmmm... I prefer the escargot at Bistro La Bonne. They are more garlicky and way less salty. The mussels were not very plump. A kilo is quite a large portion, so I do recommend sharing. The broth consisting of lobster bisque and brandy did nothing for the less than plump mussels. They were $24, not $22 like the Yelp menu states. They were passable, but not "wow worthy". I prefer St. Arnold's mussels in Cleveland Park. Their mussel pots are just $10 at happy hour. (Not sure if they are a full kilo, but probably because they are $19 during non happy hour times.) Not that I am trying to sound cheap, but I just don't think this place is as good as it gets. Beers are expensive (staring at $7/bottle), and they were out of the three I asked for. It is tiny, and loud. Seats are cramped together, so don't come here for a romantic dinner for two. read more

I've heard many things about Mannequin Pis in Olney but I had never eaten here until recently, My mother and sister and I were enticed by the 3-course special that we saw from the parking lot and decided it was a sign for us to finally try this place out! My sister and I got the three-course meal (34.99 for an appetizer, entre, and dessert). We started with the baked mussels cooked in a garlic lemon broth topped with parmesan cheese, celery, and onion. They were quite delicious and I loved dipping the complimentary bread into the sauce. On the topic of the bread, it was deliciously light and crispy. The server was quite liberal with refilling the basket which we were very grateful for. My sister got a potato soup as an appetizer instead of the mussels. While she liked her soup, I found it rather thin and plain. As an entre, I got the steak with fries and found it very delicious and filling. The meat was a bit tough for my liking even though it was cooked to a medium-rare. I can confidently say that Outback Steakhouse has better meat. The fries were my favorite part of the meal. Perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. My mom got some sort of seafood dish that she wasn't particularly fond of. While it wasn't bad she regretted her choice and wished she had gone for the beef stew instead. For dessert, we shared some chocolate mousse and some creme brulee. The mousse and brulee were both good but I could find some fault in each of them. Still, they were a satisfying ending to the meal. While I don't regret dining here, my curiosity has been sated and I doubt I'll ever come back again. The food was good but nothing on the menu stood out to me as particularly delicous. read more

Food is very good. Order any muscle dish, you can't go wrong, they are all very good and delicious. We had the Snob. Best muscles I've eaten (so far). When you go here remember to bring the virtue of patience. You will need it especially when it comes to service. The servers are nice but seemed to be afraid of doing wrong. They are not even smiling. So obvious that management do not encourange them to be more friendly and more attentive to customers. So sad. Management need to analyze their business, which includes staffing. I am still giving them 5 stars because I came here to try their muscles and I went home in awe and very satisfied. I have been dining here for a decade back when you could hear Bernard loudly motivating the staff from the kitchen. The food has always been excellent and has not skipped a beat since changing ownership. The $34.14 3-course meal special is hands-down the best value around. Any appetizer, any entree, and any dessert. Started the nostalgic meal with escargot, which came out piping hot. Eat the melted cheese and escargot over toast points and you're in business. The mussels with the included side of frites is the way to go. While I dined, I heard another table give up on her kilo of mussels. It's a great portion. I got the Popeye which comes with Spinach, Celery, Onion, Herbs, Bacon, Cream and Parmesan. To get the most of an entire kilo, attack one side of the pot to get down to the broth. That way you can spoon out or use bread to enjoy the broth while you eat the mussels. You will leave full and happy. The profiteroles were excellent with a dark chocolate bitter finish. read more

Excellent restaurant. Rivals my impression of Ruth's Chris but with a Belgian twist. Must have the Scaldis Bier (full bodied, sweet and nutty, with a high alcoholic content). The Kilo Pot of mussels comes in different varieties as the cheesecake at The Cheesecake Factory. The Carbonate Flamande (beef stew) is very tender and savory. Superb tastes. I can't wait to go back to try other items on the menu. Plan for a sitter if you have little ones. This is a small, low noise, intimate setting for a special date night or a mature family. Authentic European feel! Piping hot food (where expected). Best-ever lobster bisque, wonderful smoked salmon app, delicious mussels, great frites, tasty Belgian beer. Service was spot on, friendly & attentive. Servers kept an eye out and emptied our mussel shell discard bowl several times and were ready when we wanted another beer. While the whole experience wasn't picture perfect, we had a really lovely meal at Mannequin Pis. It started out well - they found our reservation and seated us within a few minutes. That's when things got a bit hairy. As noted in previous reviews, the tables are very, very close together. Because of the placement of our tables, I constantly had waitstaff moving behind me to serve two other tables. Unfortunately, this meant there was some bumping of their butts with my shoulders, which I could have done without. I actually had to move my purse to the boyfriend's chair because it kept getting knocked around. It also took quite a while for our waiter to get around to our table, mostly because they seated a number of people right around the same time. He spent a good bit of time detailing the menu for us and describing people's favorites, which I liked. He also told us the Groupon could not be used for the Monday price fixe menu, which I didn't (as an aside, shouldn't that had been clearly marked on the Groupon? I think so.) We ordered the escargot appetizer and 2 pots of mussels - the snob (lobster bisque) and bruxelles (bacon and goat cheese). We did have to wait quite a while for bread, and finally flagged down a waiter after I counted 3 tables seated after us that already had bread. It was worth waiting for: fluffy and crispy. Very good. Also mentioned in previous reviews - you can't rush this place. It did take quite a while for our escargot to appear. But you know what? They were TOTALLY WORTH THE WAIT! Delicious. The boyfriend is a huge fan of the snail, and while I can take 'em or leave 'em, these were delicious. Fresh garlic, butter, and broiled cheese. OMG. Then...the mussels. Fresh, clean, not a one that tasted funky. While some were on the small side, each was beautifully flavored. The snob mussels really taste of lobster bisque, and the broth is so good. SO. GOOD. So good. The bruxelles was also great - you can taste the hit of bacon on the mussel, and the tang of goat cheese. Mmmmmm... The frites were ok - they were very hot, and very crispy, but sort of just tasted like fries. The rest of the meal, though, was sublime. We will definitely be back, although this time we will be smart and share a pot of mussels. Even with two hungry people with hearty appetites, there was more than enough to share. read more

A surprisingly tightly packed, outdated looking restaurant with miscellaneous, unrelated knick knacks decorating the interior. There are no beers on tap, which is a bit disappointing for a place specializing in Belgium fare. They will pour the bottled beers table side. The mussel pots were quite tasty and served steaming hot. Each time a table ordered a pot, when the lids were raised, a delicious, savory aroma filled the air. The mussels were cleaned, not gritty, and cooked well. A good amount of the mussel meat was on the small size. We tried the snob (lobster bisque base) and Dijonase (dijon mustard, white wine, thyme, bay leaf, onions, and celery). In retrospect, it would have been better to share a mussel pot as an appetizer and order two different entrees. A cone of fries are served with each pot. Fries were whatevers and seemed like the frozen stuff. They were very similar to the Golden Arches, but fried and seasoned poorly (way too salty). The mayo dip that accompanied the fries was unimpressive. Warning: This place has some serious AC issues. It is boiling hot in here, making the overall experience quite uncomfortable. Especially when you're sitting over a steaming pot of mussels, phew, the stale heat is unbearable. I highly suggest calling ahead of time to see if this issue has been fixed (one of the staffers was talking to another about how they did get it fixed, but the AC just hasn't been working well since that time). read more

My biggest disappointment about our experience, was that I waited sooooo long to visit. I went for a much needed girls night, where we only planned to get a few drinks, and share some mussels. I truly loved everything about this restaurant. They were unique, down to earth, and friendly. The restaurant is eclectic in decor, which all comes together creating a warm, intimate setting. I shared the raspberry lambic and popeye mussels with one friend, while the other ordered the hearts of palm salad & a Stella. Everything was delicious. The salad alone was so intricately stacked and put together, I was in awe! Even with our "happy hour" type orders & casual dress, the staff still went out of the way to treat us like royalty. From the front of house to the back of house, you can tell everyone there loves what they do. Hospitality goes a long way. I cannot wait to go back with more friends and family. read more

Three years ago, a friend recommended Mannequin Pis as a place to take my fella for his birthday. I made an early reservation as a surprise and when we drove to the address we were a little taken aback by the strip mall location. Nail joint? Check. Low end Chinese take out? Check. Mattress store? Check. But tucked away in this crappy mall, is a gem of a place. We walked through the doors, and we stepped into a charming Belgian bistro. Great service. The mussel selection was incredible, all served with fries. The beers, too many to name, were terrific. The venison sausage will rock your world. Because it's a small place, it fills up fast and gets a little noisy, otherwise this would be a 5 star joint. Oh, and for the love of god, do not bring children. Bottom line...Great food, nice decor, frustrating service. Came here with one of my besties for my birthday dinner. We were stoked that there was a Belgian restaurant midway between her place and mine (Olney, you are full of surprises!). It wasn't too difficult to find with GPS, though it's tucked away in a small shopping center that's not directly on Georgia Ave. I can see how parking might get tight, but we had early dinner reservations so we had no issues. Four stars for the quaint, quasi-sophisticated ambiance and the food. We munched on some warm bread and butter while we waited for our beet salad, potato soup, and steaming pot of Hawaiian mussels. Everything tasted great (which the exception of one pissy mussel, but I know mollusks can be temperamental). If I was going to find myself in Olney with a mussel-loving friend, I'd recommend this place, with caveats. Now the reasons for docking a star: 1. Their beer selection was appealing, but my first two choices (both Witbiers) were out of stock. What's the point of having a great beer list if you don't have what you advertise on said list? Big bummer. 2. They were out of asparagus for their seasonal special of prosciutto-wrapped asparagus. We didn't know about this until after we painstakingly pored over the menu options and was giving the waiter our order. He then stated they wouldn't receive their next delivery until Friday (it was a Wednesday, in case you were wondering). This would have been good to know when we were initially given the menus. 3. Our waiter is likely the same person mentioned in a few of the other reviews. We initially took his comments as dryly humorous, but then they started to border on brusque, pushy, and arrogant. He made no apologies for not letting us know that they were out of various menu items, and he appeared off-put when I (me!) very apologetically told him that I didn't want the alternative beer that he brought for me (which he *nearly* opened and poured into my glass without consulting with me whatsoever). To round it out, he was selling their mailing list pretty hard and had my bestie fill out a card with the expectation of a discount during her next visit, but he didn't bring her the discount coupon. By that point, we just didn't care anymore. A quiet (on a Wednesday evening) and charming restaurant great for dates tucked in the back of a small strip mall. The food was definitely on the unique side and quite delicious and filling. The beef stew with pommes frites (shoestring fries, for non-French speakers) was rich though the beef was a bit on the tougher side (but still tender). Top notch meal and friendly, attentive service. We sat outside at one of the sidewalk picnic tables in the shade at noon yesterday. I had the kilo of mussels with frites, dipping sauce and french bread for dunking. Mussels were delicious - impeccably fresh and the broth at the bottom of the pot is wonderful for dipping. All options from the dinner menu are available at lunch. French fries crispy, delicious and expertly fried. I used every bit of dipping sauce! This meal is reasonably priced for dinner, but is an incredible bargain at lunch. We'll return soon. read more

This is such a cool little spot. My husband and I went to belgium a few years back and a pot of mussels was the staple. We were so excited to find this place. They have a great deal on weekdays, appetizer, entre and dessert for $30. They have a whole list of mussel pot options, but the Snob is the best! They also have a great selection of belgium beers you only find in Belgium. Service is very good too, very polite and quick. Highly recommend! read more

Due to COVID they offer outdoor seating at small tables or picnic style with an umbrella which had great ambiance. Would highly recommend coming to enjoy a great meal at a great price with Belgian beers you can't find anywhere else! Great time. read more
