Stopped by Manuel's Tavern on a Tuesday night for a group dinner. They serve typical bar fare with a few hearty meat and potato dishes and rotating specials. When I went they had steak kabobs which looked very appetizing. I ordered the salmon wrap which did not appear to have more than 4 oz of salmon so I probably wouldn't order it again. The staff was great very friendly and attentive. Great spot for large group meals and for families. Parking is right behind the building. read more

We had an amazing snack and some drinks at the bar here. We have lived in ATL for years, and somehow neither of us had been here before?! This place is legendary, as most say. Very cool vibe in here, laid back bar, and an amazing list of draft beer. We were going to an early show so it wasn't crowded (around 5:30pm on a Thursday), and we got our food very quickly. We ordered the Greek salad to split, and it was good - nothing too special, but it didn't need to be. For main dishes, we ordered the corned beef reuben, which was perfect. One of the better ones I've had in Atlanta, for sure, and I'd get it again in a heartbeat. K ordered the country fried steak, and it was HUGE. They do not skimp on the portions here, at all - we took home a box full of leftovers. The steak was great, collard greens were decent, and the mashed potatoes and biscuit were both divine. It was our first time and we didn't know what to get so we ordered the chicken quesadilla, chicken nachos, wings and a salad. EVERYTHING was seasoned beyond perfection and great portion sizes. The only feedback/recommendation we have is for the possibility of the chips to be separated from the toppings for the nachos. They were quite soggy by the time it was delivered. Took a nostalgic trip down memory lane and ducked into Manuel's for a bar burger and a draft beer. My o my how times have changed since 1990. Burgers aren't $4.99 anymore and now they got the Beyond Burger and that's not all, they even have a veggie patty that quite frankly sounds much more delicious than the Beyond burger. Well I normally don't eat red meat anymore but I made an exception for old times sake. I must say the Manuel Burger with Blue-cheese was a fastball down the middle! I don't get down here enough, because I have to drive in from Norcross, but it's always worth it. The insane Dogzilla with everything is a must have for anyone making their first visit. Other great options include the Ruben, Chicken Salad Melt, House Chili, and French Dip. I love all the pics you'll see hanging of older Politicians who visited Manuel's in it's younger days. A bit of history hanging throughout the Dining Room and Bar worth walking around to see and read the descriptions offered with some of them. Then my favourite part are the Pinball Machines. Who doesn't love those??? I gleefully feed them my money, getting my happy levels up. I have to always warn my friends in advance if I stray from the Table, that's where I'll be. The vibe of the place to me is a "Working Person's" place. It's welcoming, warm Staff, friendly Customers who genuinely may offer to buy you a Beverage just because they can. If I lived closer, this would most likely be my regular spot. I love Manuel's tavern and how it feels like a small bar but it's not. All the staff are SUPER friendly. The food is delicious!! Especially the French dip and their breakfast. And their tuna melt is amazing except they haven't had it on the menu in a long time which is a shame because EVERYONE loves it and wants to see it back on the menu. OR even if they rotate it on the menu in place of the chicken salad melt for a couple weeks at a time. Bit I highly recommend coming to this historical landmark and trying it out. read more

Manuel's Tavern is a neighborhood bar in Poncey-Highland at the corner of North Ave. and N. Highland Ave. It's caddy-corner from Videodrome and across the street from Chevron and the original King of Pops stand location. Manuel's is popular and is viewed by many locals as an Atlanta institution. It's been around for a long time (since 1956). The tavern's long-standing history is what gives the business most of its character and charm. The place is big with multiple rooms and bars. Some of the rooms are newer than others, though one can tell the place has been around a while. There's plenty of seating at the bars, booths, and tables. There are numerous TVs, a small space with arcade cabinets, and free Wi-Fi. The clientele is diverse and the atmosphere is laid back. Smoking inside is allowed. It's easy to get comfortable here with the relaxed, friendly, and unpretentious vibe. Manuel's has about 30 beers on tap and 60 in the bottle. It's a classic bar serving typical bar food -- soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, wings, nachos, etc. They serve brunch on the weekends (Sat-Sun, 9:30am-2:00pm) and the kitchen is open late, closing at 11:00pm-midnight most nights, ideal if you're looking for a late night meal or snack. While many items are under $10, I'd expect to spend about $10-15 for a meal here. Foods I've tried include: Kobe Style Burger - 10 oz. American Kobe style beef blended with spices and grilled, served with lettuce, tomato, and onion on a challah roll J.J. Special - 1/2 lb. burger on grilled wheat toast with onion, Swiss and American cheese, served with fries and onion rings Meatloaf plate - slice of homemade meatloaf, tomato-onion gravy, roll, mashed potatoes, collard greens I've found the food to be generally mediocre. I was disappointed in the Kobe Style Burger for a few reasons. The biggest reason is the meat didn't taste very good. It was slightly dry, tough, and not flavorful. I'm not sure if I tasted any spices on the meat. The veggies were fresh, but the challah bread was smushed and didn't do a good job of holding the burger together. Halfway through eating, the burger had already mostly fallen apart. The flat, soggy roll wasn't appetizing. I will say the beef patty was plenty big and the burger looked great when plated. However, looking at it is one thing and eating it is another. The price, $12.25, just adds to the disappointment. That's a "gourmet" burger price for a burger that's not very good. The Holeman & Finch burger ($12) and burgers at burger joints like The Vortex and Farm Burger, to name a few, are less expensive and significantly better. The J.J. Special burger fared better. This burger is essentially a patty melt with toasted whole wheat bread, cheese, and onions. Unfortunately, the burger patty suffered a similar fate to the Kobe Style Burger above -- just not very tasty. At least the cheese and onions alleviated some of the meat's lack in flavor. The onion rings were good and the fries were OK. I like the long pickle wedges served with the burgers. The meatloaf plate looked like a traditional Southern diner "meat and two" meal. A generous serving of meatloaf gravy was poured on top of the meatloaf. There was so much gravy that the meatloaf was completely hidden by the gravy. The gravy was runny and very "tomato-ey." Lots of tomatoes were used in the gravy and there were several easy-to-distinguish bits of tomato in the sauce. The sauce wasn't like the more "normal," thicker meatloaf sauces I prefer. It's different. The sides (greens and mashed potatoes) were OK. Texas toast was supposed to come with the plate, but an ordinary roll was served instead. Service is good. The staff is attentive and food orders come out from the kitchen in a reasonable amount of time, even during peak hours. A great thing about Manuel's Tavern is the parking. In a neighborhood where parking can come at a premium, Manuel's has two free parking lots: one behind the tavern and one next door. The lots are large and there are many spaces. There are even spaces reserved for electric cars. If all the spaces are taken, park along Williams Mill Rd, the residential street that runs between the two lots. And, if you're ever strapped for cash, there's a Bank of America ATM located in one of the parking lots. read more

I came in this evening and it was somewhat busy. I sat at the bar and ordered a chicken philly and fries $10 and a tropicalla $6.50. The food was so greasy, everything tasted like it wasn't fresh... On the menu, the beer is listed as a 12oz pour. I'm assuming they ran out of glasses and gave me a short bar glass instead. I asked the bartender about the ounces and he told me it was 12. I've worked in several restaurants in the past, I know a 12 ounce pour when I see one. The service was fast and friendly. Drinks are reasonably priced. Allow me to become the thousandth person to point out that Manuel's Tavern is an Atlanta institution. Established in 1956 when Manuel himself decided to turn the existing sandwich and beer joint into a neighborhood bar like those he'd experienced while stationed in Europe during WWII, the place affectionately known to regular's like myself as 'Manny's' is still a terrific place to get a beer. However, your food options now include much more than sandwiches. You'll find most standard bar/tavern fare here, and it's all perfectly good at reasonable prices. There's also a warm sense of community here. You may not be interacting with your fellow patrons, but everyone is so gosh-darn nice. I make it a point to get to Manny's for team trivia on Sunday nights. This has given me the chance to try several dishes, as I don't like to always get the same things. Nothing at Manuel's has ever disappointed me - but nothing has ever blown me away, either. If I had to pick a favorite sandwich, I'd go with their corned beef reuben - it's always perfectly gooey with lots of meat and cheese. The burgers don't have a whole lot of taste, honestly but they're definitely not *bad.* They just don't stand out from any burger you'd get anywhere else. The service is very friendly and usually prompt, the beer selection is more than adequate, and I absolutely love the atmosphere here. You can find Manuel's Tavern at the corner of North Ave and N Highland Ave NE. This is a largish building with large ad murals of Manuel's and Coca-Cola painted on the side (recreations of original murals). Parking can be found behind the building or in the lot across North Ave. I had a chance to visit Manuel's Tavern several nights ago - first time in a few years. A bit auspicious as I've heard the building is being remodeled to make adjustments to conform to the new housing development soon to occupy the adjacent parking lots. I used to live a bit further South on N Highland Ave near Elisabeth St, so Manuel's was an old favorite and regular hangout for me. Manuel's was opened in 1956 by Manuel Maloof transforming the previous Harry's Delicatessen into an Atlanta institution. Manuel's had more of the charm and character exemplified in the old sitcom "Cheers" than any any bar I've ever visited,with regulars that appear as if by magic once the sun went down to sit at the bar or attend one of the many meetings that Manuel's fully supported. You'll find the likes of Atlanta Science Tavern and various political organizations calling Manuel's home over the years. I've seen many arguments start, continue or finish there while watchers-on enjoy a pint of bitters and the abundant bar fare. Besides the rambling interior spaces, the menu is fairly straightforward (although there are two different versions that I've seen and photographed for your enjoyment below). Manuel's is first and foremost a bar so the food fulfills the promise of your best of bars - burgers, sandwiches, and a great hot dog which all can come accompanied by fries or other fried sundries. This isn't your basic weight-watcher food so don't come here expecting to eat a salad (well, you might intend to eat a salad, but once you smell and see this stuff you'll probably loose your resolve and succumb to the inevitable). This most recent night I forewent my usual hot dog or wings and went for the J.J.'s Special. This is a1/2 lb Angus burger on grilled wheat toasted bread with sauteed onions. It also comes with both Swiss and American cheese and of course both fries and onion rings (I sometimes call it the heart-attack special). It's delicious and not your typical burger. I also enjoyed a nice pint of Bell's Two Hearted IPA which Manuel's fortunately provides on tap. This is a delicious IPA and one of my favorite to find "loose" and not restrained by the confines of a bottle. Other items I recommend: the chile cheese fries, the nachos, the wings, any of burgers, the chicken sandwich, the club, the house pork chops, and the hot dogs if you're a fan (I am!). The service was fantastic - our party had about 20 people and we were all served quietly (there was a meeting going of after all) and efficiently - it's always top notch here whether you're seated at the bar (my favorite) or at a table or booth. I find myself going back here all the time for meetings and social events. I have long known that Manuel's was known for political meetings and important gatherings in Atlanta. I finally helped make history when I came for the first Bernie Sander's meeting in June. Look around at the walls for the other important icons Manuel's has catered to. I tried the Reuben. It was your basic Reuben and I love how they gave me the sauce on the side. I have never been a fan of that thousand island sauce though it goes well with Reubens, I like it sparingly. I really wanted to try the sweet potato tots but opted for the Black beans and rice instead. Their beans and rice are perfectly seasoned and moist. I love that they offer many craft beers at cheap prices. They also offer a fine Bloody Mary if you come for weekend brunch. I loved the Ghirardelli Brownie dessert with Vanilla Ice Cream. Manuel's Tavern is a true iconic bar. Opened in 1956, the bar/restaurant is almost as much a museum or time capsule as it is a bar. Loyal patrons have brought signs, photos, memorabilia, and even a stuffed gopher creating an eclectic decor. It is well worn and has somewhat of a dive bar feel, but I hate to lay a dive bar label on this place. Manuel's decor is the real thing that newer bars try to imitate by going to yard sales and antique shops. The tavern encompasses four different rooms and just feels like it goes on forever. The space alone is reason to visit Manuel's. But they also have an extensive beer list and good food which is another reason to come in. Many craft beers on draft as well as an extensive selection of beers in bottles. The food is really good for bar food. Appetizers including nachos and wings as well as Sandwiches, burgers, soups, salads, and comfort foods (meatloaf) provide something for everyone. Lots of tv's around to watch sports. Manuel's is closing toward the end of December for renovating. My understanding is that the positions of the photographs and other memorabilia are painstakingly being photographed so they can be put back in place after the renovation. I've been a patron of Manny's for YEARS but had never tried their brunch before this past weekend. OH MY! I've been missing out. My guests both ordered the french toast - one with bacon and one with sausage. They loved it! The portion size was perfect and they both cleaned their plates. I ordered the special, the asiago asparagus omelet which was delicious! The plate came with a cup of fruit, a biscuit, and grits or potatoes. I was given the grits by mistake but took the opportunity to try them. They were creamy and seasoned to perfection. What else was seasoned to perfection? Those dang potatoes! Hoping for a bite to eat. Manuel's Tavern was suggested and so we headed on over for dinner, surprisingly finding a parking spot in their rear lot. When we walked in, the place was packed! We saw three main rooms. The one front and center when you walk in, a main dining area to the left, which holds what seemed like 100 people, and a smaller room to the right, which was blocked off for a private function. We seated ourselves in the larger dining area to the left, and just a fair warning, this place is PACKED on a Friday evening. Wait staff eventually got to us and we ordered the following: Memphis BBQ sandwich - $7.95 Side of Onion rings - $2.25 to add on Fish basket - about $9 Starting with the Memphis BBQ sandwich, it is a slow cooked sliced pork protein that's cooked in their house bbq sauce. That's all topped with slaw and its placed in a kaiser roll. You can also get fries or sub out the fries for something else. I chose to sub for a side of Onion rings. The sandwich was hit or miss. My first bite was dry and flavorless, my second bite was sweet and tangy. The third bite was Cole slaw intense. There really wasn't any uniformity here and each time I took a bite it was a different flavor. That's fine when each bite tastes great...but some of the bites missed the mark for me. The onion rings were thick cut and crispy. The batter wasn't really seasoned, although ketchup took care of that for me. Probably wouldn't order the rings again but if they were sitting in front of me, sure i'd throw down a few. I didn't try the fish basket due to my allergy, but they came with two sides. She asked for hush puppies and collard greens. The greens were okay, and while the hush puppies had good flavor, they were little grease balls. I was told the fish was okay. Located off of North Highland ave, parking for Manuel's shouldn't be a problem. Although it was packed, we did find a parking spot behind the building (you can enter from the rear or the front of the restaurant), but there's also additional parking at the lot next door. Seating is plentiful. We counted several heads sitting at several tables, and while navigating to find our own, there was a table or two still available during this busy period. This is my second time to Manuel's tavern and we'll probably come back at some point. It has enough menu variety, it's close enough where it's convenient and while the food is hit or miss for me, when it's a hit, it's definitely a hit. read more

Last week I attended a book event to meet an author and an entrepreneur. Parking was available across the street from the restaurant. Upon arrival there was no signage as to where to go but I figured it out. Just before the event started I ordered a small bite because Because I ate earlier. My order of black beans and guacamole came out quickly and tasted fresh and delicious. From my review of the menu they have a variety of offerings for different diets. A classic, old school, neighborhood restaurant/tavern. Located in a really great part of town, Manuel's has an at home feeling - casual and warm. The walls are packed wi the old pictures and artwork, the ceilings are decorated with bistro lighting or wood planks at the bar, and the interior is exposed brick and wood. I had the behind burger which was really good, my daughter just had a side of mac n' cheese and enjoyed that too. Plenty of parking is definitely a bonus, too! Now that Manuel's Tavern has banned smoking inside (as all restaurants/bars should!), I felt it was safe to venture back recently. After their renovations, you can't even tell that cigarettes used to be allowed. My lungs are pleased. My only prior experience with Manuel's was accompanying someone who wanted to play pinball. They have two machines here. I forgot which ones, but they seem to be in fine working order. The heavy smoke made me want to not linger very long, however. You can enter the tavern from either the back or the front. It's not clear that you should seat yourself. But you can. It's a big space with a couple of different rooms and areas. I saw a couple of people eating alone, so Manuel's seems like a spot for solo diners. If you are into politics, there's a lot of rich history here. Maybe you'll spy Jimmy Carter among the regulars. Apparently Bill Clinton and Barack Obama have been here too. I got the McCloskey burger ($8.25) plus cheddar for 95¢ extra. It was pretty good though a little more done than the medium I had requested. Lots of cheddar was plopped on, I approve. Instead of the default steak fries, I opted to have the side salad for a $2.50 upcharge. I was expecting fat wedge fries, but they were actually thinner. But I was happy with the salad. I selected a raspberry vinaigrette. Manuel's sure likes red onions because a too generous amount accompanied both the burger and the salad. Apologies to anyone in close proximity to me afterwards. The salad also featured multi-colored grape and cherry tomatoes, croutons, cucumbers, crisp lettuce, very nice. I will say that at a recent packed event, the servers kept smiles on their faces and positive attitudes going. I'd be all snarly and grouchy if I had to deal with squeezing past patrons endlessly, but I applaud them. Manuel's has its own giant (or at least by neighborhood standards) parking lot, right across Williams Mill Road. But one time, a man approached us asking for money as we were leaving the car. There's also parking behind the building. I don't think I would race back to Manuel's, but if an interesting event were being held there, or if others wanted to go, I wouldn't protest. read more

My favorite neighborhood restaurant in Georgia. I have lived within walking distance of Manny's on and off for twenty years. Many of my friends live nearby and it became a routine happy hour, afterwork, pre-game meet-up destination. It is the kind of place you can take your parents when they visit from out of town, without having to make a reservation. For decades it was a hangout for Atlanta journalists, CNN employees and local Democrats. Presidents Clinton, Carter and Obama have all eaten here. Be sure to pay homage to the painting of JFK behind the bar. The names of regular patrons, living and deceased, are engraved on some of the barstools. As for the menu, it is classic American bar cuisine, cooked just how you like it when you make it yourself at home. Large portions. Rich savory sauces. Fresh breads. Large chicken wings. And the menu has just about everything. My favorites are the Wings with Terry Sauce, the Chicken Philly, the Lasagna, the Rueben, and the McCloskey Burger with Blue cheese and mushrooms (always with the House Steak Fries, and add the house side salad if you're really hungry). Tips: There is a second parking lot across the street. There is reserved parking for clergy. There are two electric charging parking spots. They do take out. They have side rooms for hosting Corporate meetings, D&D clubs or your fantasy football draft. There used to be a chicken coop on the roof where they collected fresh eggs. Not sure if it is still there since the remodel. The staff is local, professional, courteous and they treat their regulars with respect. They honor long-time employees by naming menu items after them and placing their pictures on their hallowed walls. They used to have a couple of pinball machines, not sure if they are still there. Came here for dinner and drinks, could have gotten better wings on a walmart shelf. Got their classic ones with terry sauce, didn't enjoy them at all. Way too sweet for my taste, but perhaps someone else would like them, so 2 stars is not because of that. Our bartender looked like she was dreading every moment of her day and although she didn't mess anything up, wasn't that nice and gave off the presence vibe that could have been just as well filled by an empty space. Jalapeño poppers were extremely hot (temperature wise, not spice) and the first bite was treacherous. A heads up would have been nice. read more
