Thanks to Eunice K. for introducing me to Marcel. I'm a Mediterranean food fanatic and Marcel delivers with all of the goods. Think everything from bourkas to shakshuka to schnitzel. The menu is standard cafe fare so expect to see lots of salads, soups and sammies. Plus tasty sweet and savory baked goods! It's a great setting for breakfast, lunch or just getting some work done with a snack. We were able to snag one of the last tables at around 11, and by noon the entire space was completely packed out with a lunch crowd. Portions are large and prices are fair. I ordered a 1/2 sized mediterranean pizza which was topped with feta cheese and lots of fresh veggies -- roasted peppers, caramelized onions and mushrooms. The 1/2 size comes with 3 slices and for $6.00 is quite a generous portion. I was eyeing pretty much everything else on the menu, so it's safe to say a repeat visit will be happening in the near future. If only there was a spot like this in my neighborhood! read more

I came here as i heard my go-to place MishMish Cafe was bought by Marcel Bakery. Also going by yelp reviews i was very excited to give them a try and order 1/2 pizza and Healthy mess salad bowl which was delicious from mishmish. I was so disappointed to find that most of the items on the menu which is on yelp is outdated and they dont have the pizza anymore neither do they have some other dishes. The menu they have in the store seemed to be missing a few items as well and if you ask the servers there then they tell you more items. Unfortunately for me the stuff which i used to eat at MishMish cafe has been moved to the cold section which is like pre-packaged food so i was thrown off by that. We ordered the falafel bowl and the falafel sandwich which i have had at mishmish and these were def a lil different. So if you are coming to this place because you loved mishmish cafe and you want to have the same food then be warned its not exactly the same. There are some differences. However we did try their banana bread which was delicious and their Z'atar Focaccia bread which was good too. I would definitely want to give this place another chance sans the mishmish cafe food. read more

This place is just an absolutely yummy stop. It became a staple to my friends and me for lunch over the past year and a half (we seriously would come at least 1-2 times a week) and I know other students could say the same. The servers are so sweet--one time they were slow to bring me something as the order got mixed up, so they gave me a free pastry. The service is always quick (sometimes there is a line for the register though) and there is both indoor and outdoor seating (can get snatched up quickly during lunch hours, so claim your spot). Pretty much everything I've tried I've loved. Their pizza is so reliably good, always fluffy and the perfect sauce-cheese ratio and the banana bread makes a wonderful companion to it (I seriously had an addiction to the banana bread over the summer). I also love their grilled cheese on pita bread, though I like to add a little extra spice to it when I order it. As for drinks, I've tried the matcha, which is decent and the chai is pretty good too. Not usually a big drink person, myself, but I do love their smoothies, specifically a custom one I order : mango, blueberry, strawberry, with an oat milk base. SO GOOD! While visiting Montclair some friends took us here for breakfast. It's a very cute and eclectic place with large tables and communal seating as well as a few small tables. The menu is on the chalkboard and there are loads of pastries to look over and enjoy. Today they were sampling chocolate bobka and a pound cake. The bobka was fabulous but we are here waiting for a flight so I could not get any to go. The theme is Israeli food but I had the challah French toast. It was divine. Cooked in butter and served with a sliced banana and more butter and powdered sugar. My husband had the Jerusalem breakfast and he likes the egg dish but the dressing on the salad was too vinegary. Cozy little café with absolutely stellar food. My boyfriend and I split the lamb meatball shakshuka and the Jersey Jersey Jersey (fresh burrata, roasted tomato, and nut free basil pesto in a pita). The sauce in the shakshuka was so sweet and delicious! I actually looked to see if they sell it packaged in their refrigerated section (where they have an assortment of salads, sandwiches, and sides to grab quickly) but unfortunately they don't. The Jersey Jersey Jersey was just sheer perfection. So great and light and refreshing on a hot day. I'm absolutely in love with it and am already planning on grabbing some for lunch next week! My boyfriend grabbed a cortado (shot of espresso with warm milk) and I grabbed the mint lemonade (additional charge for mint leaves). Marcel is a nice addition to the Upper Montclair Valley Road neighborhood. The interior dining area has small tables and communal tables. It has some cool artsy pictures to view while enjoying your drink and food. Have tried several food items at Marcel. The food is good. Personally, I think for their prices, the food could be little better. If I remember correctly, Marcel offers a discount of one dollar for every $20 spent. Definitely recommend the Fresh Spinach and Mushroom Omelette. The Lobster Sandwich ($16.95) and Turkey w/Brie Sandwich are pretty good. I had the Turkey w/Brie twice. The first time, the sandwich was very good. The second time, I found the turkey to be a little too salty. One time, I had poached salmon burger. It was just okay. After trying all their different foods, I would probably stick with their egg dishes. Drinks-The super fresh peach iced tea is a must to order. Coffee, Expresso, Cappuccino and Tea are available. Of course, dessert is available! I can vouch for the the Rosewater Teacake. It was absolutely scrumptious!!! Fresh pizza, quiche and breads are available at Marcel too. Outdoor dining is available. Sunday morning....my wife and I were out and about in Montclair looking to try yet another breakfast cafe, adding to our growing list. After parking in the public lot, we wandered down to Valley Rd where my wife mentioned that she had heard good things about Marcel Bakery & Kitchen. Several customers were seated outdoors as we approached the front door. Entering, we quickly found the (short) line for ordering; it was now about 11:00 AM. Everything happens on the RH side as you enter, the condiments and utensils bar, and a shelf where plastic menus are stored. We "learned" this by seeing customers in front of us with menus. (The shelf is not very visible, yet it is on your Right as you proceed up to the ordering counter.) Once you get close to this counter, you are faced with a good selection of baked goods to add to your order. We both ordered the French Toast and American coffee. It is served with bananas, strawberries, and whipped cream, Once we paid (via electronic pad) your handed a table No. and sign. We then found an empty table, got milk and syrup from the condiments bar and waited for our breakfast. Surprisingly, our food and coffee was quickly placed on our table despite the crowd. I wanted to award Marcel with 5 stars yet there were several concerns which Ownership may want to consider: The placement of tables could have been arranged to afford better movement inbetween them. Staff began removing chairs from our table for 4, placing them outdoors. Several customers, waiting in line had already eyed our table, yet now that it only had 2 chairs, it became somewhat undesireable. The placement of the condiment bar and refuse container seemed to cause quite a bit of interference as customers had to continually cut through the Wait Line to get at the condiment bar and the refuse container after bussing their own tables. Although we followed staff's direction for paying for our food and beverage, we were not provided with a receipt. I've since learned that receipts are not given out at Marcel. However, I made arrangements to have ours emailed. Our French Toast, although very passable, was prepared on somewhat thinly sliced bread and not very substantial. My almond croissant was very good and we do plan on returning to Marcel to sample more of their breakfast fare. read more

Hey, I've never been inside, but I love the place. Being immunocompromised, I haven't set foot in a restaurant in over two years (my wife and I used to eat out A LOT). I'm strictly curbside pickup these days, and Marcel is very accommodating. The food is so good that I gladly drive 90 minutes (back and forth) to pick up from them. I highly recommend the Vegan Strong Bowl! I always get it with hummus, and it is absolutely delicious. The pita bread is always fresh and tasty which is a big plus with this food. The lentil soup is also first rate. Since I'm vegetarian, I can't really speak to the non/veggie options. But, I assume that everything is great here. I'm hoping that one day I can actually feel secure enough to go inside and eat at a table! read more

This was first time at Marcel, along with my husband, my friend and my friend's cousin (first time for all of us). The food was amazingly good. We were there at 12:30 on a Sunday before going to Montclair State to see a wonderful new opera, Blind Injustice. Marcel was a great start to a wonderful and meaningful day. Terrific shakshouka (apologize for mis-spelling), fantastic omelette (I asked for egg whites only and it was one of the best egg whites only omelette I have ever had), the fluffiest pita, and delicious coffee too. Heard a buzz from several friends about this newly opened place by the owners of Mish Mish in Montclair. Was buzzing at 3:15 pm on a Monday with about 9 customers. But thought too expensive for what you get. Still, a contemporary spot, more hip than what was formerly here. I had a spinach feta pastry to go. Too pricy for what was delivered. Plus chocolate pastry (3 for $5) to go. Thought pastry was dense. Total bill around $15 for a phyllo small entree and the little pastries. They also sell exact pastries in packages of 8 for $10, a better deal. Some positives. Nice atmosphere for spot across from Kings. I like Mish Mish. Think this place is new and will give another chance. A cool common table can seat 8. A couple of other seats. Designed for lots of take out. Breakfast menu looked good, but also pricy in my opinion. My phyllo pastry main course had too little spinach and feta. Served with a little tomato topper and a teeny pickle. Sesame (black and white) was good crunch. But needed more spinach. Our Help My Yelp reunion crew decided on Mishmish for a reunion meal, and it turns out Mishmish is now a couple of menu items at Marcel. So we went to Marcel. They have a few tables inside and outside, but it's a pretty small place overall. Prices are pretty reasonable, especially given the location in preppy Upper Montclair, so I would say that this is "downscale" and judging my experience accordingly. You walk in and place your order at the counter, then sit down and they'll bring it to you. You grab your own sides and drinks from the cooler near the counter, so all that's premade. The staff was patient and personable, so kudos to them. For food, we all ordered shakshukas, basically fragrant tomato sauce with a fried egg inside, plenty of cheese, and meat. My meat of poison was the lamb sausage, and I found there to be more cheese/egg than sausage in mine. One other friend ordered the same dish and had an abundance of sausage, so he ended up leaving me a few to balance. The sausages are wonderfully delicious, and I gather that because it's a giant stew, what you get depends on where they scoop from (and of course the egg), but if they assemble the ingredients separately then they need a little work on consistency. The taste was about 4.25 stars. Once we were brought our food there was no other service; they don't clean up until you leave, so you may have to bus yourself if you need more room on the table. Verdict: Undecided. It could actually be a nice date venue, but there is a relatively limited menu here and it's fairly eclectic, so I don't know what I would actually need to crave in order to think Marcel. And maybe that's the main reason this isn't 5 stars - it just didn't leave me with a sense of "this is my place to go for _____". Yet. We shall see if I return... read more

Okay, here is why 1 star. I got the pre-made Mediterranean salad. Some of the lettuce was WAY past it's prime. It's embarrassing and distasteful to put it in a fresh salad. And $10 for that. And, the Mini spinach/cheese Boureka was one blob of uncooked dough with NO filling. So, completely inedible. Awful. I will never go back. The food is definitely better if you stay - some of it doesn't travel well and can get soggy. If getting to-go I suggest grabbing something from the prepackaged fridge. The Mediterranean Boy is the most delicious sandwich ever - and is my second favorite Halloumi dish next to Mish Mish's halloumi salad. The fiancé loves the protein bomb which is toast with lox, hard boiled egg and salad. They also make some fresh breads and little pizzas that we're going to have to try soon! read more

Small establishment with high volume. Parking can be difficult as there is no parking lot so it is street parking only. If you want bagels or other pastry, arriving early would serve you well since they do sell out of many items. I like the buttery egg and cheese on a bagel, but it has been served room temperature a few times. It comes with a little salad which is a nice touch. read more

If anyone were to ever do a study on which gender is more predisposed towards watching random, inane YouTube videos, am convinced it would be men. For hubby, you see, YouTube is all. Indeed. It is how he got it into his head that he absolutely had to try this place: So try it we did. Twice. The first time we did lunch, with hubby getting a Sabich Sandwich and yours truly going for a Falafel. The former is traditionally made with slices of fried eggplant. In this case, it was swapped out for a baba ganoush-like puree. Hubby was into it. I *mostly* dug the green, herbaceous Falafel, which hinted of mint. Thought it could have been less dense and more crisp, though. And was not a fan of tossing baby greens into the sandwich instead of the classic finely diced tomato and cucumber salad. The lettuce was awkward to bite into and added nothing. Adored the pita, which reminded me a little of the spongy, slightly chewy marvels that have helped make Miznon, helmed by exacting Israeli chef, Eyal Shani and located in NYC's Chelsea Market, such a popular draw. Marcel's pita tastes like it's made in-house. For our second visit, we went with the Israeli Breakfast and the 'Yemenite Vine' Breakfast. The former, which included some VERY squeaky, slightly too salty grilled halloumi cheese, boasted a pair of perfectly cooked, runny sunny-side up eggs. The latter consisted of Melawach, a flaky, buttery Yemenite pancake, traditionally served with grated tomato and zhoug, a fiery cilantro spice paste. This rendition traded the zhoug for Moroccan harissa and I really, really think it lost something as a result. Also wasn't into the fast casual presentation of serving the sauces in plastic to-go containers. But that's me. If you're still reading, then mazel tov and here is my take on the sweet stuff we tried: Mini Halva-Filled Croissants: Such a lovely idea if you're into this distinctive tahini-based candy. But the Croissant wasn't airy and flaky enough, and it was bland, as if it wasn't made with butter. Lemon Poppy Seed Tea Cake: This tasted like a very moist, dense muffin. In a good way. Really appreciated that it wasn't overly sweet, and that the citrusy flavor popped. Didn't outright love it, but I sure wouldn't complain about eating it again either. Malabi: Snatched up this middle eastern crushed pistachio-topped milk-based pudding from the refrigerated deli-case. Again, I appreciated the really light hand with sugar, but it was almost too light. And I never, ever say that. Plus, there was a strong hint of bitterness at the end that I wasn't fond of. Bottom line: If we'd stopped with just the sandwiches, which were really vibrant tasting and satisfying overall, this would be four stars. But the breakfast dishes and sweet items were more disappointing than not. And since Yelp refuses to offer a .5 star option, am rounding down to three for now. ps They do not *appear to* have a restroom here. Which sucks. read more

I have a hard time seeing how anyone can rate this below 5 stars. I never had a bad meal at Marcel. Every time I go, no matter what I order, I love it! It is a great spot in town to quickly run in and order a quick bite to eat. My personal favorite is the turkey and brie on a pita. The pitas are amazing and very fresh! They are also accommodating if you want to substitute ingredients. A must have try, is the house iced tea. It is delicious! I often pop in just to grab some iced tea to go. Marcels is also a great place to just sit and have a cup of coffee and do some work or studying. During the lunch rush, they do not allow people to sit with laptops due to the volume of people, but it is a great option if you can sit there outside lunch hours. The menu is not too overwhelming, but there are definitely options. My mom and I decided on the Mama's Chicken Stew in Pita ($9.95), a Salmon Salad sandwich ($10.95), and an iced coffee ($3). The chicken was juicy and tender with wonderful flavors and spices. The pita was warm and soft and complemented the chicken perfectly. It was my favorite of the two sandwiches. The salmon salad had a fresh salmon flavor, and it was on a fluffy brioche roll. Both sandwiches also came with a side salad that was delicious as well! The service was quick and friendly.
