This place has some fantastic food! I've been there a couple of times and have been very pleased by their chicken parmesan. The meal is served with a gigantic piece of chicken, breaded and seasoned extremely well. They have a tomato sauce that is spicy as well, which was fantastic when I had it. The only reason I don't want to give this place 5 stars is because it is a tight squeeze. The restaurant itself is pretty small and hard to maneuver in. It can be very loud which I know is out of their control, but the tables are just so close to one another. The atmosphere is fantastic and they have good drinks to choose from. With my bad hearing though, it makes it a little difficult to hear my server or my company, especially when they're busy. All in all, this place is fantastic and I'll let the food do the talking. Was in town for work and went to Marcella's on a whim and I'm so glad I did. I arrived a little after 4PM and was in immediately greeted and seated by the hostess. Right after my server Jared came over and explained their menu and specials to me after learning it was my first time there. I decided on the Melted Pecorino (which was half off as it was happy hour :)) and the spaghetti and meatball. First of all, the Melted Pecorino was amazing. It's simply melted Pecorino cheese, granny smith apple slices, truffle honey, and crostini. I ate all if the ingredients of this appetizer together, separately, and every other way combined and it was all amazing. Get it. You won't regret it. My entree of spaghetti and meatball came and I was blown away. The meatball was the size of a softball! It was also so tender and juicy that I had to use very little pressure to break pieces of of off with my fork. The pasta sauce was just how I like it; tangy, super flavorful and full of spice, I couldn't have asked for more. And the service was impeccable. very neat italian restaurant/bar in the short north area! the service was great and attentive, the bread and oil was great, and so was the food! i highly recommend the fettuccine and meatball or the chicken parmesan. they also have customizable meat/cheese boards and a huge selection of wine. my only complaint is that i wish the pasta portions were a little bigger for the price. it was an upbeat place that could both cater to a casual night out or a romantic dinner. read more

so disappointed! this was our favorite date night restaurant when we lived in the area. my husband and I currently live in Georgia but our son lives near atlanta and we came to town to celebrate his birthday and engagement. we booked a reservation on open table, excited to share our favorite restaurant with our so. and his new fiancé. I had a wonderful dinner at Marcella's this past weekend with my rowing team. We were in the area for a competition and had heard good things about this restaurant, so the race coordinator got twelve of us a reservation. Marcella's is in a popular part of town and it was an Ohio State football game day, so we were lucky to be seated at all and didn't mind a few separate tables. The staff were accommodating about some members of the party arriving later as well, which was appreciated. The atmosphere inside is dark wood with Italian accents (maps, loaves of bread in baskets, etc) and the effect is very charming. The ladies room had mouthwash with little disposable plastic shot glasses for rinsing next to the sink, which was nice touch. I can't help but wish more places did that! I'm unable to eat dairy, so I was confined to ordering some of their delicious cured meats and eating that with the bread and olive oil at the table, but this was plenty. The beer list was small but high-quality and very reasonably priced, with craft drafts for $5 and bottles for $4. Definitely a better deal than one typically sees in Pittsburgh. Overall I was very favorably impressed with Marcella's and will make a point to come back if I'm ever in Columbus again. read more

This is one of my all time favorite restaurants. I am very picky with my Italian food and this place cannot be beat. It is consistently rated as the best Italian restaurant in Cbus and it's easy to see why. They have an excellent happy hour with generous portions (the pizzas are great!) I know many people who appreciate their gluten free options as well. For me, I love their wine selection. The chicken parm and spaghetti with meatball are the best two menu items! You have to get the meatball when you go here! It is the most tender, perfectly cooked meatball you will ever eat in your life! This is also a great place to take out-of-towners. I was really excited to try Marcella's, my boyfriend and I have attempted to go 4 times but due to long wait we ended up going elsewhere. Monday night, I called in to make a reservation to make sure we (well, just me) could finally try it for the first time. Fire whoever answers the phone or give them a Prozac. Hostesses are underwhelming. Our service was great. I called in to say that we would be ten minutes late, and we were seated immediately upon arrival. Understandably, good food has a reasonable wait. I want to say we were seated by 7:40, ordered by 8, and got our food around 40 minutes later. The food was disappointing. My boyfriend ordered the chicken parm. You could tell the food had been sitting for awhile because the pasta was dry and the chicken parm crust was soggy. He was so hungry he asked for a side of marinara for his dry pasta and ate the whole thing anyways. This is after (literally) 4-5 baskets of bread and a salad appetizer. I had the fettuccini with meatball. The meatball was disgustingly soggy. I let my boyfriend have a bite of my meatball because he had been to Marcella's twice before, and he agreed that it was soggy. I couldn't get a "chunk" of meatball on my fork, everything just fell apart to mush. It had the consistency of cat food. I was able to move it around on my plate and reshape it however I pleased. The pasta was good, but didn't live up to the "large portions" that I heard Marcella's was known for. We brought the quality of the food to the server's attention. She apologized and said she would let the chef know. She also said that the meatball was veal and is known to "crumble", but honestly no matter what the meat, there is no excuse for a giant meatball to break down into a creamy pâté-like consistency. We gave her our card and she returned less than 5 minutes later with the receipt, meaning that she didn't bring our concerns to the attention of any manager. We expected at least something to be comped or discounted (I would've been happy if she comped a beer), but I'm not one to really cause a scene seeing as I work in the service industry myself. Overall the bread was the best part. We will not be returning to Marcella's. +1 star for the service. I could pay less and get better food elsewhere. I would suggest Cooper's Hawk in Easton for a similar style menu with more options, much better quality, and customer service. read more

Marcella's is the perfect spot for a gathering with loads of pasta and giant softball-sized meatballs. We dined here on Monday evening with a group of five people. We made a reservation online and were seated at a large round table. The atmosphere is very welcoming and classically Italian with lots of wood finishes and a counter in the back. It's a little loud but it feels cozy. They have a diverse wine menu and we indulged in the fresh burrata with garlic toast and tomato. It was light, fresh and pretty tasty. For our mains, many went with the meatball with marinara and fettuccine Alfredo. It's the perfect combo and their pasta is made in house. I opted for the lamb bolognese gnocchi and it was heavenly. It was rich & flavorful and the tender meat and pillowy gnocchi melt in your mouth. I left Marcella's feeling full & satisfied! read more

While in Columbus to attend Highball halloween (which was not a busy event at all due to the heavy rain, but that's a different story...) we ended up for dinner at Marcella's. We didn't have a reservation and ended up having to wait for 45 minutes, but boy was it worth it! So, apparently this place is famous for its spaghetti with meatballs. Two in our party ordered this, and I took a bite, it was quite good! I also tried their Sicilian pizza, which was great. But, what stole the show for me was their Chicken Florentine pizza, it was tender, delicious, and just a different taste compared to other pizzas I have tried before! Finally, the drink, the strawberry balsamic, was exquisite and quite good. The ambiance was fabulous with lots of pleasant background noise! I thought our waiter could have been more attentive, I was waiting to get another drink and he just showed up at the end when I was done with all the food so I didn't order anything. Marcella's is always a 5-star experience. While I have no problem paying menu price for a romantic sit-down dinner, the happy hour specials are the way to go! There is amply bar seating and the service is always fantastic. The wine and cocktail specials are great and never disappoint. The salads are fresh and flatbreads are flavorful and make great leftovers. Our favorite dish is always the calamari which includes parmesan zucchini and a special lemon sauce. The tiramisu is great as well. You can't go wrong with Marcella's! read more

Cameron Mitchell restaurants; I don't know where to begin. I'm not a millionaire, so I can't enjoy most of them regularly. But damn, they all have food that is delicious. I had a gift card, and I am Italian, so naturally I came to Marcella's. The bruschetta- too much bread, not enough crunch. The strawberry basaltic and grapefruit cocktails were the bomb. I loved the Sicilian pizza- so much garlic! We had the seasonal risotto, which was a seafood type- also very tasty. Overall good service and vibe. Like all Cameron Mitchell restaurants it prides itself on tasty food and a unique environment. Came here with my parents and girlfriend a few weeks ago and overall it was a good time. We started off with the burrata which I found very good even though I'm not a huge fan of stuffed mozzarella. For the entree I ordered the gnocchi bolognese, and it ended up being one of the best Italian dishes I have ever eaten. We then ended the meal with an order of profiteroles, which were larger than I expected and also delicious. This restaurant would easily have gotten five stars if it was not for the service. I will say it was the night of a home Blue Jackets game, which always floods downtown and short north with people. That being said, I had made reservations a few weeks prior and we ended up in the corner right next to the door. The chilly draft every time the door opened was not ideal. The service wasn't necessarily slow, but it wasn't fantastic either. Not the servers fault by any means, just too many people for the amount of staff. Overall I'd definitely come back, but I would try to avoid a Saturday night. read more

Having been to all of the Mitchell establishments, I can safely say that Marcella's is my least favorite in terms of the food, as well as the atmosphere. (FYI: For a stunning atmosphere, go to M. For deliciousness, head over to Ocean Club.) As I've come to expect from Mitchell restaurants, the food ran the spectrum. A few spectacular dishes and several duds. The beef carpaccio was superbly (lightly) seared, and the texture contrasted quite nicely with the ricotta pancakes. Equally delightful were the two flatbreads ordered: Crispy potato and Veggie. The calamari and bruschetta, however, failed to impress. Digging around for the calamari, I instead came up with fried pieces of zucchini after pieces of zucchini. The bruschetta arrived limp, sodden, and destitute of flavor. Desserts -- much like the small plates -- were a hit-or-miss. The cherry crustada was hard enough, it's more aptly suited as a protection weapon. The chocolate almond cake was pretty average and nothing out of the ordinary. The show stealers, however, were the ricotta cheesecake and the profiteroles. Small in portion, the cheesecake delivered a density and lusciousness that is unique in its own ways. The profiteroles were not your typical cream puffs either. Adorned with a myriad of fillings, the pistachio was, by far, my favorite of the night. Food aside, the atmosphere fits right in with the rest of the Short North, with a tinge of pretentiousness. From a bachelorette party gone wrong (let the sounds of the obnoxiously loud ringing voices lead you to the party) to the family wanting to enjoy a wide array of Italian dishes (usually found towards the back of the restaurant rolling their eyes at the aforementioned party), Marcella's draws a wide and diverse crowd and for different occasions. While that may be suitable for some, others who are looking for a slightly more intimate and quieter environment may want to go elsewhere -- like Z Cucina. read more

So I used to come here all the time and I've never had a large problem before until the last time. The food is fantastic here, as well as the drinks. The atmosphere can get a little loud depending on where you sit in the restaurant but the food is really what makes up for any problems normally. However I have always had problems with the servers and this last experience was ridiculous. The server kept ignoring us, barely talked to us, and when he did acknowledge us he talked down to us like he didn't care about serving us. I've worked in the service industry, I get that sometimes you see a table and you automatically generalize that you won't make any money from some tables and sometimes you don't give them the best service. But his treatment was beyond terrible. He also lied about what the risotto of the day was, telling us it was a lemon shrimp and sun dried tomato risotto and it came out as a chicken and mushroom risotto. When it came out he didn't even show up to fix it for ten minutes, and so my boyfriend started eating because we were hungry. He barely apologized and didn't do anything else to try to even make amends when the chicken and mushroom was way heavier and not at all what was expected when he told us the risotto. The experience before him, the lady was just very cold and unfriendly to us as well but we got everything we needed so we didn't worry about it. But because of him we don't plan on coming back to this location. We try to be understanding because we both have worked as servers but that was unacceptable. read more

Marcella's Ristorante sets a very nice atmosphere for group of friends or for a nice dinner for two in the Short North area of Columbus. My first visit was a Friday night with 3 others and for that we made a reservation at 6:15PM. Seated finally at 6:45PM, being told they were a little behind, was understood. Marcella's had our reservation and that's half of any good restaurant battle. The entire place was buzzing and I like that when out with friends. To our left was a table of 6 with women out on the town really having fun. Behind me were two couples. To my opposite side was a family of 4 with one being a 10 or so year old child. All good so Marcella's is equally comfortable with anyone. Style and apparel was not in question either; folks dressed up and dressed down. Hey, it's a nice Italian restaurant that's comfy. Meals. Our table had chicken piccatta, linguini with clams, lasagna and chicken marsala. I had the linguini and clams - pasta was perfectly al dente and the clams, while smallish and few (4 - 5 clams) they were tasty. Paired with a pinot grigio made a nice meal. Pals said their meals were good albeit the lasagna eater claimed too much sauce that had a acidic taint to it; he had to pull off most of the topping. The table had calamari as an app and it was good. The pricing was moderate for being a Cameron Mitchell place. I found the restaurant to be fun, lively and ready to build most any meal and environment it could for the customers. Our server was prompt, cordial and had a consistent method of visiting and filling water glasses. Yup - I'll visit again. I would like to try it on, say, a Wednesday or a Thursday with a friend to see if it's quieter, to take more of Marcella's in with my 5 senses. read more

Most days I don't believe in Italian food because I have this philosophy that most Italian restaurants aren't any better than something I could make at home by myself. I have been to Marcella's on several different occasions and have always had a good time and I think Marcella's is an exception to my usual philosophy. The bread isn't very good to me in comparison with other restaurant's free breads, but no worries because there are better things to come. We always like ordering the calamari - it's tasty and a decent size to share. I've also tried the chicken parm, linguine and clams, and spaghetti. The big meatball is just fun because yeah sometimes I just wanna eat one large meatball so wut. I think portions are fair on the most part - especially with the three entrees I've tried (but the ravioli looked a little small to me). I've also tried the cannoli and tiramisu I would recommend both! They have a variety of coffee/espresso drinks (both alcoholic and non) for your post-dinner pleasure. I've had the affogato (a shot of espresso and vanilla gelato) which I think was a bit small for the $, but omg I'm about to have that every morning instead of my normal coffee. Nothing is earth shattering good but the ambiance is good, everything is quite tasty, service is good, and it's a good spot for a dinner that's whatever you want to make it (on a scale of casual to classy). Marcella's to me is consistent, and is a safe place to bring friends, family and visitors because I think everyone can find something to like that will be delicious! I'll cut to it- it was fantastic. Best fancy pizza around. I wanted a beer...maybe a fancy one ... To go with my pizza. They had some, but very limited. All the usual kitschy ones you'd find anywhere. I guess it makes sense being quite an Italian place; the wine list was huge. Spent $220 here plus tip for 4 people. I felt as though I had been robbed which has never happened to me before. The service was borderline acceptable(at 5pm on a Sunday) we had to ask for everything, bread, missing appetizer, missing entré and missing drink.... The fried calamari frito mixto, we ordered 2 @ $15/each, was mostly zucchini and should be called fried zucchini with a touch of calamari. That's a lot of money for two plates of largely fried zucchini. The burrata was excellent. The drinks were good but unfortunately the Citrus Negroni and the Grapefruit basil fizz were mostly ice. The meatball/spaghetti plate was good but a bit pricey at $18. The Fruiti de Mar of which we ordered 3 for $78 was a complete rip off. It was smallest serving of pasta I have ever been served on any continent. The seafood was mostly absent, one scallop, 2 small shrimp and several awful mussels that were tiny and very over cooked. They plated several that had not opened, ie. were dead. My husband had to request a side of pasta which was very small @$4.50. Really, pasta is super cheap why not give patrons more? Why plate dead mussels? Why misrepresent a fried calamari appetizer? The dessert were fabulous especially the cannoli. As a Brooklynite who knows her way around cannolis, I was impressed. In all, I felt that the management of Marcella's typed us in every way possible and in ways that were totally unnecessary. The crowning glory of this fiasco of a meal was a 40 minute wait for our valet parked car. Apparently there was a cheerleading convention in town and they were short of staff. Really? Why was I not surprised. Maybe this was an off day for the waitstaff and the cook. My comments on their website went unanswered. read more

In my experience, it entails you overpaying for small portions of bar snacks, ideally while drinking enough to make that a tolerable proposition. With that out of the way, here is what I actually have to say about the restaurant I am reviewing: This is a review of Marcella's happy hour, 4-6 p.m. on weekdays. Basically, it's great. Pizzas are $4 (regularly $11 - see what I'm saying about overpaying?). Caponata is another good option (I ask for bread with it) at $3. A liter of sangria goes a long way, and sets you back just $8 (instead of $26). Marcella's top-shelf twist on the Manhattan, that quintessential American cocktail, is just what the lawyer ordered and just $4. For 2 hours every weekday, Marcella's is a refreshing and reasonable drink + snack option. The rest of the time - it's tapas. read more

U was starving so I walked over to marcellas and I'm so glad I did because the spaghetti was sooooooo good. When you can get a meatball as big as your fist that can practically serve as a whole meal on its own, you know you're in good hands. Marcella's Ristorante offers said meatball either as an appetizer or as a whole meal on top of pasta. It's the most tender and flavorful veal meatball I have ever had. It's what the restaurant is known for. I highly recommend it! I have also had the calamari appetizer and the chicken parmesean, which are also both right up there with the glowing recommendation I had for the meatball. I can not speak for the rest of the menu, as I have only been a couple of times, but everything that is listed at least LOOKS like it'd be amazing. What is also great about Marcella's is the decor. It is an enormous restaurant with dark, sleek wood, cool spherical hanging lights (lit dark, but not too dark), and an impressively long fully stocked bar. The coolest feature that Marcella's can boast of is its large window-front that actually folds in and opens completely, transforming the enclosed restaurant into an open patio in a matter of seconds. It's absolutely perfect on a cool summer or spring night. This is a top notch Italian restaurant, and I would go as far to say it's the best I have had in the Short North (far better than Black Olive, and just a notch above Martini and Rossi...which are both pricier even). My 5 star rating is solely on the merit of Marcella's ridiculously awesome happy hour. Something kinduv weird happens when you become a parent. Well, a lot of weird things happen, but this is one that no one really mentions but should be pretty obvious: happy hours will become ABSOLUTELY SACRED. And i mean sacred in the truest sense of the word. I don't consider myself a religious man, but if you take away my happy hour, God help you. Anyways, so basically since moving back to Columbus, my wife and I have frequented quite a few different happy hours. What we're looking for: good price points for drink and food specials, an accessible and diverse menu, and an attractive environment for us to feel like we're a lot less responsible than we should be. Prior to coming to Marcella's for happy hour, our go to spot was The Pearl, pretty much next door (which is a really brilliant business model), namely because my wife is a sucker for fresh oysters, and I'm a sucker for their amazeballs fried cheese curds (no, seriously, hard to screw up fried cheese curds, but the curds here are something exceptional). But the rest of The Pearl's food specials, while decent, are a tad uninspired. We sat at Marcella's bar, wife was thrilled with her martini (and ultimately ordered 3 more #YOLO), and when I asked about the food specials, the bartender pointed out literally half of the menu. HALF OF THE MENU. HALF OFF. incredible. So, five drinks, one pizza, and like 5 other dishes later, we rang out to the tune of something like $40 all told. remember me talking about not being a religious man? maybe my perception is skewed from east coast living, but sans angels singing and the heavens parting, that is truly a miracle. read more

While this may indeed be the best pizza in Columbus (no offense to Bexley Pizza Plus, but much to all those fans of the greasy processing of Donatos, Adriaticos, Papa Johns) the atmosphere could use a little work. Hip and trendy, great food, but simply too loud. Went with my family on Christmas Eve and enjoyed the fried calamari a great deal, along with the wonderful fresh italian bread with butter. For our pizza options we opted for Margherita, Funghi and Taleggio, and Shrimp Pesto. While all 3 pizzas were great and the cheeses were fresh, sharp, and well melted the crust really stood out due to its thin and crispy texture. The tomato sauce was great and the pesto was incredible, but the garlic sauce on the Funghi was a bit much (and I'm a pretty huge garlic fan.) For dessert, the Tiramisu was terribly overrated and nowhere near the quality of other Columbus establishments. Tiramisu is a dish I get at every restaurant that offers it and I must say this is in the bottom 25% of those sampled. On the otherhand, the Profiterole's were absolutely stellar, on par with those at far more expensive restaurants in much more culinary cities - The dish, additionally, was enormous. For the price, Marcella's may be one of the best options in all of Columbus. Great, fresh food in large portions........if only the place were a little more quiet and had a better Tiramisu. On my next visit I believe I'll sample some of the cheese tasting menu and the other dishes besides the pizza. read more
