Inside is misleading for the fact it's totally modern inside, but dated on the outside. Came in specifically for some donuts for my wife as she has seen this advertised in Facebook for donut Fridays. Walked in what I assumed was the owner greeted me and was super friendly. Be warned if you want the whole selection get here earlier than 9:30 like I did. I grabbed what they had left and headed out. Once home cracked open the box to give them a try. These aren't your typical donuts they had more of a cake consistency vs a standard donut. Despite that they were very good and were perfect with a cup of coffee. They tasted so fresh and while I was just a sampler and my wife is the donut lover she also loved hers as well. Plus they had other baked goods on hand as well and will pretty much bake what you want them to. Great find in a town really lacking options. Plus always love supporting a small business.

I have driven by this shop a million times but never got the chance to make it in. After checking out all their photos and goodies off their website, making my way in today was a must. The shop is very small and intimate. You are immediately greeted by all the goodies as soon as you walk in. Colorful macarons, the cutest cheesecakes and beautifully displayed scones and muffins. The display case is nice and bright, allowing you to be able to see the details and coloring of each macaron. The pretty piping on the cheesecake. The fun layers of the cakes. It was hard not to want one of each thing out of the case. It was our first visit for my daughter and I. As a new customer, you're trying to absorb everything about this store. You want to look at all your options! The gal that initially was going to help us pretty much just stood there and stared at us. Didn't really talk to us. Didn't ask if we had any questions. She had the most unpleasant look on her face. It honestly made me feel so unwanted and uncomfortable to be at the shop. I offered to let another customer go ahead of us so she wasn't just standing there waiting for us to order something. The second customer also needed some time. Finally a gentleman came in and she got him some coffee started. Another gal was working and she helped us. At that point, I was so turned off about getting anything but we were already there so we decided to grab a few things. My daughter and I decided to share a 6 pack of macarons. We snagged lemon, birthday cake, coffee, chocolate, creme brulee and cookies and cream as our flavor choices. She also got a red velvet cheesecake for us to share after dinner tonight. On our ride home, we broke that box of macarons open and had to try them all. The lemon was sweet and tangy, I love the lemon custard in the middle. Birthday cake reminds me of a pink frosted animal cookie. The chocolate was my favorite! Very chocolate forward and sweet. Coffee reminded me of a vanilla latte in cookie form. Cookies and cream was much like cookies and cream ice cream. More cream forward and less chocolate cookie. Creme brulee had sugar toasted on top which created a slight bitterness to the cookie but it was balanced with how sweet the cookie was. All 6 macarons were fabulous! I look forward to having the red velvet cheesecake after dinner tonight. I like that there are so many gluten free options at this bakery. I adore how petite and prettily decorated the pastries were. I appreciate that this joint is local as I love supporting local businesses. But, first impressions are so huge for me and my first impression of their customer service wasn't there for me. You can push out great products all you want but how you make someone feel during their purchase can make or break your business. As fantastic as my macarons were, all I can think about was how uncomfortable I was when I was just being stared at. Macarons and cheesecake can be purchased at a few joints in our valley. I'm happy I got to enjoy some goodies with my daughter but I'm going to go support another local business that will actually make me feel like a valued customer and not a bother.

While once our 'go to' for bread and baked goodies when we discovered them about ten years ago, we have found in the last two years that Gaston's seems to be struggling with consistency in all of their breads and pastries. It is like seeing a friend ailing without ability to help. Also where we once experienced Gaston's as the 'go to' of quality restaurants for bread it now seems many are using another local baker, Acme, which is the one we chose most often too for consistent top quality. I hope Gaston's finds their groove again. We no longer recommend it to others as the first choice.

Owner Mathieu Chou originally owned La Café de Paris, located in downtown Boise, which closed years ago. I have fond memories of trying my first pate there, served with cornichons. I was sad to see the café close, but I was elated when Mathiu opened Gaston's. Mathieu is a classically trained French baker who has turned making bread into an artform. Gaston's Bakery is a large commercial kitchen with a small retail area open from 9 AM to 2 PM daily. They sell out fast, so the earlier you get there, the better. My favorite bread in the world is Gaston's Country White Boule ($6.95). Country White is a traditional French bread that is crusty, has a soft white crumb, and is slightly tangy, like a milder version of sourdough. Country White makes fantastic sandwiches, toast, and French toast. It's perfect for eating with a nice hot bowl of soup, stew, or anything else you want to serve it with. I cannot recommend this bread highly enough. It comes sliced and unsliced. I prefer to buy it sliced because the bread is so wide that it can be hard to cut it straight. I always ask for a couple of extra bags and freeze part of it. it freezes as well. I get this item EVERY SINGLE TIME. I also got a Kouign Amann and a Ham & Swiss croissant: Kouign Amann ($4.30) is "a sweet Breton cake made with laminated dough. It is a round multi-layered cake, originally made with bread dough, containing layers of butter and incorporated sugar, similar in fashion to puff pastry albeit with fewer layers." If you haven't tried one yet, I highly recommend you do. You can get them a few places in town, but these are my personal favorite. Ham & Swiss croissant ($4.35) - Gaston's makes my favorite local croissants. If you want one that is savory and filling, I recommend trying the Ham & Swiss croissant. It is outstanding! If your idea of a great ham and Swiss croissant is the La Boulangerie brand sold at Costco, try this instead. It will change your life. Highly Recommended!!! Location: 3651 W. Overland Rd.
