Great place to eat in Downton Stockton. Love their homemade flour tortillas. Flautas craving... burrito needs... taco wants.. multiple (hangover helping) soups... carne asada... garlic shrimp... the best rice and beans.. they are here. Ordering for pick up was a breeze. Vegetarian/vegan options!! Just a note. I don't understand the other reviews about "customer service"... Seems like none of these commenters have ever visited an authentic Asian restaurant where most servers yell at you while taking your order and slam your teapot on the table lol. But servers at Maria's aren't nearly that bad. They're working, not here to be your bestie or entertainment. Order your food, eat, and enjoy loving yourself! This Mexican restaurant is located in a part of Stockton where the City hasn't performed any renovation yet, it's located east of the old Stockton Police Station. Chile Relleno: Below Average. Machaca: Made in the traditional manner, just average. Chips and Salsa: Nothing to brag about. A Hispanic couple recommended this place to me after I told them I was looking for the best Chile Relleno in town. I had already tried Nena's, which they liked also. Whenever I'm in town, I HAVE to go to Maria's Cafe. Unlike a lot of other Mexican restaurants, their food isn't drenched in cheese and oil. You can actually taste the fresh ingredients they use. I love that your meal starts with both corn and flour tortilla chips and two types of salsas. By the way, for those of you who don't eat pork. they don't use lard in their refried beans or made in-house tortillas. On my last trip, I ordered the camarones a la diabla. The shrimp was cooked just right (not rubbery or raw) and the heat level had enough kick. Delicious! Looking forward to my next visit. read more

Maria's is just "eh" to me. Had the machaca today and it's not as good as El Zarape's. The flavor was bland but I'm glad the meat was tender. The salsa was also bland but tasted better after I added salt to it. Husband's dish was delish (huevos rancheros - chicana style). He seems to order the better meals lately. Today was my second time eating at Maria's, and I was completely satisfied with my meal... I love the fact that you get French fries in addition to rice and beans with most breakfast items.. This totally pleases my "inner fat boy".... While the food is not mind blowingly good, it's still not bad and doesn't taste all generic like Chevy's or El Toritos... Marias also brings back memories of my first "underage" watering hole, Sam Pan., since they are right next to each other... Miss you Willie!!!! Overall Maria's serves up decent Mexican fare and the prices are reasonable... If you have a phobia of going to downtown Stockton, don't fear.. SPD headquarters is literally across the street... Great hole in the wall. The place is a good size and looks really clean. It's a small family restaurant which I finally got the chance to try today after hearing so much about it. Their salsa is homemade and DELICIOUS. The flour corn is also homemade, and my entire dish tasted very authentic. I sat in front and talked to the family for a bit; really nice people. An older lady came to say hi to me from the back to make sure my meal was OK, and she had remembered seeing me perform tinikling a loonggg time ago. This place is one of my favorite hole in the wall kind of restaraunts. My friends family owns it, so the customer service for me has always been great :) But the food I order, the burrito covered in gravy is to die for and same as their beef quesadilla MmMmm..... I never order anything else, ... but my friends who order other stuff love their food too! Their gravy and cheese is super addicting. YUM :D The pricing is reasonable. Service is good. The chips and salsa are addicting as well. I definately go back whenever I have a chance. The building itself is old, but the owners do the best they can. Before Maria's was their it used to be a chinese restaraunt that has been there since like the 60's or 70's so thats why it seems so old. But if you craving delcious food at a reasonable price this is DEFINATELY a great spot. OH and if you go there during the work week for lunch, it can get PACKED b/c of all the workers around the area, so for lunch its best to get there a lil bit before 12 so you can get a seat or take out is fast as well! read more

The food here tastes like the food my momma makes it. I've come here with some people have something to say about everything and their only complaint is the customer service. We always come here for the caldos. Sometimes we get cocido and other times its for albondigas. If you're not really hungry the lunch sized plates are more than enough food. You get your caldo along with a small plate of rice and beans and some tortillas. Their chips and salsa are pretty great too. They offer you a mix of both corn and flour chips along with two different kinds of salsa. The downside of this place is that they do close pretty early. Here's a tip. Do not sit along the wall. I love Mexican food. I especially love Mexican food from hole in the wall restaurants. But this place was horrible! We walked in Saturday evening and just stood there, completely ignored, until we finally went over asked someone standing behind the counter if we should seat ourselves. The answer was yes. And we got handed one menu for the two of us over the counter. Half of our homemade tortilla chips were burnt, and the salsa was nothing to speak of. I ordered a bean burrito, and the fiance ordered a breakfast burrito and a beef burrito. What we got were teeny tiny burritos about the size of a frozen Tina's burrito that you can buy in your local Safeway. My bean burrito had beans in it. That was it--no salsa, cheese, or anything like that. Beans and a tortilla. Fiance's choices were no better. He couldn't tell what kind of meat he was eating. We went here based off of the decent Yelp reviews and were sorely disappointed. The was nothing redeemable about our visit--the service was terrible, the food disgusting, and, oh, there was a hair on my fiance's plate. Not that we go to Stockton very regularly, but we certainly won't go back to this restaurant. But for the hair on the plate, we would have found the experience hilarious in its awfulness. read more

I had missed the last train from a connecting bus trip the night before so I was in need of a good breakfast to get me going that morning. It helped that they appeared to be the only thing open at 9AM withing several blocks of the train station. Fresh chips came to the table with two pretty good salsas. I ordered the chorizo chilaquiles with flour tortillas. The chilaquiles had good flavor, but were swimming in sauce. They were good, just not what I'm used to, so I won't knock them for it. The coffee was hot, strong and bottomless...much appreciated! The restaurant is a little run down, but they seem to be making an effort to keep things clean. I was the only one there for a non-existent breakfast rush in the area, so I'm not sure why I had to serve my own coffee and approach the person serving to get a menu, order, and the bill. Now they're packed every day for lunch so I don't go unless I'm early (before noon) or don't mind waiting. I work in Downtown Stockton and there are times that I do go out for lunch. Most of the time, I decide to order "to go" from Maria's and then pick it up and enjoy it at my job. There is a reason I do this. I really enjoy their food, I love it. But what I can't stand is their lousy service. I don't know why I keep going back, but I can't stand the rudeness. When I call to put my order in, the younger gal asks what I want. I let her know and she just says it will be ready in 10 to 15 minutes and she hangs up. She is just as rude in person. read more

We use to go here quite often. In the start of going the food was great. I noticed that if we took my grandmother who is from the mexican side of my family and my husband we would get great service, even with my dad who is full mexican (but does not look it ) we would not get great service. Very discriminating here. Last time the food was cold. Our order had came up and the waitress was busy changing her kids dipers and getting their tippy cup as well as dealing with the baby' daddy. THe chips were burnt. Then on top of it we went to pay with ATM they informed us oh our ATM is out of service we just found out. One of us had to walk over to the bank and withdrawl cash. My boyfriends family has been eating here for years. They are familiar with the family and very close friends. Their food is awesome and they have good prices. I have compared them to other places in town being that I have only lived in Stockton 3 years. I can honestly say that the other mexican resturants don't quit compare. Their chips are to die for they are home mad and they have two awesome salsas. My favorites are the Chili Verde Burrito Combo and the Carne asada burrito with sauce on top yummmm!!! I really tried to like this restaurant. The food is good not anything fantastic. However the service is Soo horrible it makes the food bad. The older waitress just stares at you for a good 5 minutes before she greets you. She put silverware on our table and took off before I could order a drink. Then she is very rude as I'd we are taking up her time. She took 8 minutes to bring 4 drinks she filled them up then left them to put out more silverware, take an order and then answer 3 calls then remembers o the drinks. Our food sat in the counter as she didn't notice or didn't care. Not only is she a horrible waitress she was always rude to the delivery man for no reason.
