The first time I went to this restaurant I got a tamale and an agua fresca. The drink was fresh and delicious and the chicken tamale was so-so. The 2nd time I went, I was craving a chicken tamale and got it but was highly disappointed. The masa was hard, the entire tamale was semi-cold and the chicken was dry. I think I was given an old tamale (made 1+ days ago). In addition, my friend also got a tamale and hers was cold and found a strand of hair in it. I WAS absolutely in love with this place Then they randomly closed... for upgrades for a week It took two weeks or longer, with no explanation just a sign on the door I go there twice a week yeah I was disappointed When it finally opened up, they had a new cook, who was not good at all (he burned my burrito. But instead of making a new one, he re-wrapped it and used the old contents It was not edible. I returned a week later to see if he got any better and he did get somewhat get better but I miss the old guy that works there. He was absolutely brilliant. He was on vacation and then I found out he might not return. I will return because I love the place but if it's the new guy and he hasn't gotten any better, I'm not gonna go there anymore I'm trying to be patient, but to be honest with you the prices are a bit on the high end $$ but it was always worth it. This place is AMAZING! Their juice is super fresh and their breakfast burritos are incredible. I watched them make mine right in front of me. The service was wonderful as well. It's a little pricey ($27 for a burrito and a juice) but with the quality of ingredients I think it was worth it. Def will be back! read more

On their menu they say they have tamales when you go there and order tamales they tell you they don't have any. Put down the time you will tamales available so people do waste their time going to your restaurant. And I went as soon as they opened so they couldn't say they ran out. read more

We had a weird long layover at LAX and were staying at the Holiday Inn nearby. I miss my state and wanted some home cooked Mexican food while I was here. This place is amazing. Chef with the sweetest smile and the nicest young lady at the counter. Great breakfast options - chillaquilles, huevos rancheros, platos, burritos etc. The Jamaica was perfect - not too sweet. We ate here for lunch and we enjoyed it. This place has about 3-5 tables for dine in. I guess it used to mostly be a tortilla shop but a couple of weeks ago they opened for breakfast and lunch in the front of it. Prices were pricier than expected for a one $ restaurant on Yelp, I would say it is more of a 2 $ place. I got the playa breakfast burrito which came with eggs, bacon, avocado, kale and mozzarella ($18) and it was wrapped perfectly and had the freshest orange slices on the side. There was a heat to it some spiciness and it stayed so hot cuz it was so tightly wrapped. My man had the cheese enchiladas ($18) and it came with green sauce, rice and beans which were all very tasty. I especially loved the beans. Nice touch with chips and salsa and our waitress was super sweet. We even bought some fresh corn tortillas to take home. We need to come back and try more stuff. Oh, and there's not a bathroom but they have hand sanitizer to wash your hands. read more

I was pleased to find a variety of dishes ranging from tacos and chilaquiles to chile relleno and enchiladas. I was happy that they offered veggie options being a pescatarian! To start, right when you walk in all the lights are off, very dark inside. I ordered 4 tamales and it came out to $20, which I thought was too expensive but I decided to give them a try anyway. She then asked if I wanted them cold or warm....I knew there and then they weren't fresh, but again I decided to still try them. I didn't see anyone working in the kitchen, this lady was there all alone doing everything by herself. She goes to the back and I hear the microwave door close and the beeping noise. For them being warmed in the microwave I waited almost 10 minutes. Long story short, I didn't like them much. They were too dry for my taste. I personally wouldn't go back. read more

UPDATE: 2/25/21 - After receiving my credit card statement I just realized that they DID deduct funds from my gift card. Even though she said my card was "no good", they charged $8.63 to it. In addition to Maria being extremely nasty, she is also dishonest. Avoid this place at all costs. I passed by this place for years and never went in. Ordered a breakfast burrito. Gave the lady a MasterCard gift card and she said "no good". Super unfriendly person .. didn't say "do you have another card" or "do you have cash" ? Just kept on saying "no good". Horrible and bland. Seriously just go to burger King if ur considering going to this place. For starters, no restroom. Secondly the food is overpriced for the quality. I tried the chile relleno plate and there was just no flavor to it. The chips were stale and the salsa tasted like it came out of a jar. There is no table service. I had a different experience than the others. And perhaps it was because I arrived at 10am. First, the lady behind the counter spoke no ingles and was not in the least apologetic about it. So communication was a major problem. I tried to order three tacos but this was refused as being too difficult or something. She suggested something else and in desperation I said ok. What I got was three tacos. The taste was just fine but the fillings were way to liquid and while I ate my first taco, the other two were sitting in the juice from the filling. So by the time I was hitting the second taco the bottom of the tortilla had soaked in enough liquid to start falling apart. That is just not right. read more

Maria's is a small tortilla shop that I have eaten lunch at a few times. The main thing that I go there for are the tamales. They have various exotic tamales that are so tasty. My favorites are the sweet corn and sweet pineapple. Besides the tamales, the food selection is pretty typical for a Mexican restaurant. I typically get a combo when I eat there, which includes rice, beans, chips and salsa. All are pretty standard, and nothing to write home about. Good, but not great. The tamales are great though, and for me they are what I go there for. The seating is very limited with three small tables inside and two outside. MMmm my mom would often come home with their freshly made tortillas and I said I'd have to go! So, when I happened to be in the area, I stopped by and got a Vegetarian Tamale & Enchilada combo plate with beans and rice. The vegetarian tamale was delicious! A really small restaurant, with two tables inside and two tables outside. They make good tortilla and taco shells. I didn't try the tamales, which everyone raves about. There taco's are good, a crisp homemade shell fill with moist chicken, the chicken could of used more seasoning. Salsa wasn't the best, not allot of flavor or heat. Friendly service. Get'em while they are fresh! That's what makes Maria's great; nothing beats a fresh tortilla. Maria's is easy to miss though. It is in a strip mall off Manchester and the location is really low kew. They always have freshies, but look them over to make sure you get them right out of the oven and not off the rack, those are way better. read more

A small tortilla factory that doubles as a taco stand. To the unsuspecting eye it may be just another "hole in the wall" but the food is fresh and fantastic. No one is ever in here but there is a range of tamales to choose from that are homemade (Picoso, Veggie, Beef, Pork, Chicken, Corn, and Pineapple)! Also, the salsa is fresh and the chips are quite a delicious treat. Recently, I had the carne asada and it had a zesty lime marinade that really gave the dish some flavor. Honeslty i'm a Mexican food finatic! Its my fav! But I really don't know what all the hype is about this place. I have been here about three times out of the years this place has been open and the food never gets better. Ive had each kind of tamale and they were nothing to write home about at all. When I ordered them some were refrigerated and some were frozen with a bit of freezer burn. I've also tried their soups which are pretty much flavorless. I was in hopes this place would be good since I live so close but Nope! Id rather make a longer trip and drive up Manchester and down Western to Ramonas for some really good tortillas, tamales or burritos or Fiesta Time on Labrea for soup or asada. read more
