You almost expect the view to be the highlight... Then the food shows up. For appetizers, we shared the hummus plate and the calamari. Both were excellent. As someone whose kids were practically raised eating seafood around the ports of New England, calamari is one of those deceptively simple dishes we judge pretty harshly. Beachside absolutely passed the test. I ordered the cheeseburger, which was solid, but the real stars of the evening were the roasted Jidori chicken and the jumbo shrimp fettuccine. The chicken was perfectly juicy, something that sounds easy but surprisingly few restaurants consistently get right. The shrimp fettuccine completely stole the show. In fact, it's now become my daughter's regular takeout order, and she's easily the toughest pasta critic in our family. Congratulations... you've officially earned the title of our favorite pasta spot in the Marina. The service was another highlight. Our server spoke both German and Italian, had a great sense of humor, and made the evening feel warm and effortless. I don't really use hot sauce and I drowned the tenders in Cholula just to make it halfway edible. Literally we could have waited for the AMC chicken tenders and they would have been better, which is horrifying. Particularly when you try to avoid fried food in general and now you are poisoning your body for no good reason. Husband ordered a steak and eggs, medium well. I'll attach the picture and I'll let you be the judge of whether or not it was cooked properly. Eggs were not good either. Immediately, I gave hubby more than half my plate because he eats All of Everything that's put in front of him. Something would have to get up and walk off his plate for him to not eat it. He was taught not to waste food, period. The exception was steak so that he could take it home, cook it, and then eat it. The mussels were huge, juicy, and packed with flavor. I was also very impressed by the miso black cod. It came with mushrooms in a rich miso sauce that paired perfectly with rice. Everything tasted comforting and well-balanced. Our server was also very thoughtful and friendly. He split the clam chowder into four smaller portions for our group, which made it much easier to share. One thing to note: the seafood market opens early, but the restaurant itself opens at 11 AM. One staff member told me to head to the bar to order, but security then acted like I was doing something wrong. A little communication between staff would go a long way. At the bar, I was skipped twice while waiting to order. When I pointed it out, the bartender told me to "hold on" while assisting a 3rd walk up after me. I asked if we could move to an open table with table service as there were many empty for ghe hour we had already been there and was told no because they were too busy. Fair enough, but that's exactly when management should be visible, coordinating staff and helping guests. Instead, when I spoke with a manager, the response was essentially that he was focused on the bar area. Good management oversees the entire operation, especially during peak periods. I was one of 5 people in our party who spent around $100 on food and drinks (apx $500 spent in total), yet the service was a mess. If it's self-service, that's fine...but make it clear and make it work. Instead, I was skipped at the bar while ordering, staff gave conflicting directions, and there was virtually no support once we had our food. We found ourselves constantly going back and forth to the bar for drinks, utensils, soy sauce, and anything else we needed. No one checked in, and getting help from staff or management was nearly impossible. The food was decent, but the customer experience wasn't. Venice Beach is always busy. This shouldn't come as a surprise. If you're going to market yourself as part of that vibrant community, you need the operational standards to match.

Even the plates are worth admiring. They have a nice patio with heat lamps for cooler evenings as well. I absolutely love the vibes for date night. I have eaten here four times now and have a reservation ready for my fifth. The menu changes EVERY WEEK and the fact that the ingredients are so seasonal, and the chef really seems to takes pride and passion in creating different dishes so often, keeps me coming back each time. They have done specials from Sunday Night $35 7-course omakase to 50% off Neighborhood Patio nights to $65 for two 4-course date nights and the quality is so worth it. I even came by for an art class hosted on the patio since they hold multiple community events, including sports watch parties. The best yellowtail I've had (including eating in Japan and various sushi spots in LA, OC, SF, and NY) was surprisingly here, at a place I was honestly hesitant to even order sushi from. It's the first time I actually really could taste the flavor as it's more subtle than tuna, salmon, or albacore but they somehow made it incredibly memorable from the freshness. Definitely order the hamachi with pomegranate. I loved the flavor with the ponzu and that it wasn't just the basic jalapeño combo. There was a Singaporean crab garlic butter noodle dish they made once that was incredible though sadly seemed to be on the menu that time only. This was my absolute favorite entree they've offered so far. The gem lettuces Caesar salad is amazing although unfortunately, both times I've ordered it without cheese, they forgot. The boquerones (anchovies) are a gem (ha) that really adds to the salad and I love the texture from the herb crust. Their signature shrimp toast has a good crunch from the sesame seeds and distinct pieces of shrimp rather than mush inside and the ikura on top adds another good layer of flavor. The vegetable curry was rich, flavorful, and savory witbout being too heavy with perfectly cooked potatoes that didn't just hide in the sauce in a way that actually didn't make me miss the meat. The short rib curry had such tender meat and the roti made in house was actually a major highlight for me as it was so flaky, hot, crispy and had an amazing garlic flavor. The chocolate pot de creme had a good orange zest flavor to add to the chocolate and wasn't too rich or heavy though the texture was thicker. The calamari had super crispy batter so didn't associate it as much with a lighter tempura one but the lemons in it and the roasted garlic marinara sauce it came with were so good and added a lot of depth. The butter curry prawns has SUCH well cooked shrimp - flavor was amazing. Miso salmon was good though crispy skin side up would have been better personally. I liked the olive oil flavor in the vinaigrette and the lemon with veggies on the side as well. The tres leches was surprisingly light for a cake and very moist so I enjoyed a lot and the caramel ice cream wasn't overly sweet. The lychee vodka drink is my favorite (came with a drink pairing they offered with Sunday omakase) and the imperial gold yuzu cocktail is better for those who like a stronger drink. The grilled asparagus was cooked to a tenderness with great flavor from the crispy onions on top that have somehow made it among my top favorite dishes here, despite it just being a small side vegetable dish but I didn't like asparagus until this! I would definitely recommend coming here for dinner over brunch personally, as those have been my most memorable bites. I want to preface this review with a few things. I have been a fan and regular at Killer Shrimp…read moreall the way since 1994 when they had a small place on the second floor of a strip mall in Marina Del Rey and a small place in Universal City. They disappeared for a bunch of years, and we all feared it was lost forever. Luckily they came back. Since they came back, I don't believe I've actually eaten at the restaurant. When I lived on the west side, I think I just took it home and once I moved far away to the San Gabriel Valley, I would get it to go for everyone at home. So this was either the first time I've eaten at the current large MDR restaurant or at least since back around when it first opened at this new location. Therefore, my four stars is for the fact I still get this every few months (when I happen to be close enough to the Westside to make it worth venturing over to get the amazing shrimp and bread to go) and it's always been fantastic. Eating at the place itself last week was anything but fantastic, however. It was July 3rd, so the place was busy for dinner. I know other Yelpers have posted pics of it, and it was sad to see, but cleanliness is not particularly important here. Not only were we sat at a booth where there was a rolling tray behind us where everyone's else's plates were taken and dumped when they were done eating (so the smell wasn't pleasant), but there was old food and liquid (or soup/sauce) sprayed all over the wall of the booth that no one ever bothered to clean. The place was filthy. I wish it wasn't, but it was. I got the peeled shrimp with pasta, and my compatriots got the shelled original shrimp. I found two immediate problems with mine. Taking it home probably does the peeled shrimp good, because it can sit and marinate in the sauce until you eat it. Immediately out of the kitchen, the shrimp were sadly bland and flavorless despite the sauce being as good as ever. It was like the shrimp were boiled and tossed in just as the dish was going out to the table. I also noticed that the pasta was made of incredibly small, broken pieces of pasta. You couldn't even wrap it around a fork, which I usually have no problem with at home. There were no major problems with the shelled shrimp. I also had ordered a lobster tail added to my shrimp and pasta, but the dish came out with no lobster tail. I was told it still had to be cooked. I was under the impression it would be cooked in the sauce with the shrimp. The lobster finally came out about 10 minutes later, and it was frightening. I tried to get the tail out of the shell and it crumbled like dust. It tasted funky, too. I had to get my guest to try it. They just felt a piece and immediately warned me not to eat it. The tail was in fact bad. Probably frozen and thawed, maybe more than once, its texture had disintegrated. They took the tail back and took it off the bill. Basically, I will be back, but I will only get my killer shrimp to go. I don't want to eat at the dirty location again. If I hadn't just ate it a month and a half ago, I'd probably be giving them a very low score based on this one meal. However, I know they still have the mojo. Maybe just not for the dine-in experience. I recommend it still, as there is nothing else similar or quite like it. However, I suggest you get your food to go!
