I was near the beach and craving some Mexican food. It had been many years since I had eaten at El Tarasco so I stopped in. I ordered the taquito combo. The rice was okay, the beans were okay, and the taquito's, the reason I went, had no flavor at all. I actually didn't eat the second one. I felt kind of cheated out of my $16. This was my first time at this location. I ordered the #3. 2 cheese enchiladas with a beef taco and a side sope. First of all the cheese was NOT melted inside the enchilda, then the taco had NO and I mean NO flavor. Moving on to the sope. I went to pick it up and it was stuck to the plate with beans on the bottom also NO flaver as well. I'm sorry when do you put beans in the bottome of a sope??????? The WORST place to eat. I've been going to different El Tarasco locations over the last 30 years. The portions are always large and they have consistently served good food. They aren't fancy by any means but they are clean and the service is good. I usually have a favorite meal but today I thought I'd get something different. I saw the El Tarasco Burrito hiding at the bottom of the menu. I always get my burritos mojado style and I love carnitas but have never tried them here so I gave it a shot. You always get a basket with salsa and whole fried corn tortillas that you break up. But I suppose you could leave them whole and make a mini tostada. As usual the plate comes out as hot as the surface of the sun so be careful if you touch it. The carnitas were cooked perfectly. They had a nice browning that many places don't do. WOW! Was this delicious. The other burritos have a lot of different ingredients that complement but compete with each other. This however was simple. Onions, cilantro and salsa verde. It allowed the carnitas to really shine. Tender but crispy at the same time. Getting the wet version adds red enchilada sauce and melted cheese on top. It's now my favorite dish here. If you're going to treat yourself to some calories you won't have many regrets afterwards I promise. The only drawback to this location is parking. Thus the four stars. They have a tiny lot in the alley but it's full on the weekends. read more

El Tarasco is one of my wife's favs for good Mexican food. She loves the carnitas plate. We stopped by for lunch/dinner so being a fan of caldo, I went with the Caldo de Carmona (Shrimp soup). It was outstanding and full of a mixture of whole shrimp as well as without the head. A very tasty dish. The margarita added a nice touch and for $8.50 who can complain? El Tarasco does have limited parking, entering in the alley just to the east of the restaurant. Also, their chips and salsa are very good but instead of chips they feature a whole crispy tortilla (similar to a tostada shell). Prices are reasonable and service is very prompt. read more

I ordered the Caldo de Pollo and a carnitas plate with a Corona Michelada. I've never eaten there is just craving Mexican food and it did not disappoint first of all they were pretty timely with my order the place was clean there is outdoor seating the only complaint I would say is parking at the feed the meter but what are you gonna do it's Venice Beach and anywhere you go parking is gonna cost. Let's talk about the food. I took it to go and it smelled so good that I pulled over and got out and sat down on a bench and ate a bit of the carnitas plate. I did not regret it! The Carnitas was cooked to perfection and the rice the beans the cheese the lime the pico the Gallo everything was just so good! Delicious. Authentic. Nice portion sizes! Then I got home and I had some of the Caldo de Pollo also delish! I drank the Michelada. Michelada was delicious and I'm a very picking Michelada drinker! It's out of doors which always soothes my soul in these uncertain of times. It's a block form the sea in Venice beach and a few blocks from home. They have all sorts of combos and the food was delicious. Not greasy, or unhealthy, just yummy and vegetarian Mexican options. It was exactly what my heart desired. Their staff is always friendly and the food is quick to hit your table. Today, I got the Chicken Fajitas and man they hit the spot. Tender chicken sautéed juicy tomatoes onions and peppers, served with rice cheesy beans and a dollop of guac on top. Served with your choice or corn or flour tortillas wrapped in aluminum to stay warm. I had to make myself some because its Tuesday of course. This place gets worse and worse every time. I cannot even believe how many great reviews it has. I think it's nostalgia that keeps people coming back because it definitely isn't the consistency, the food, or the service. I usually go to Taqueria Chihuahua down the street in the Subway shopping center on Washington for Mexican fast food and it's insanely delicious and half the price of Tarasco. The prices here are outrageous. I was charged $3 for a little side of sour cream once, it was probably a scoop. I honestly haven't been in years because I kept my promise to stop eating there just because it's convenient sometimes during a crazy work day. Butttt Chihuahua was closed and coworker and I decided to stop in to share a burrito de asada. A traditional normal Mexican burrito has rice, beans, meat and onion and chile right? Everyone knows this. I an Mexican and this is what comes inside unless it's a specialty burrito. I asked for no chile and onion inside, so just rice, beans and meat. When we get back to the office and cut the burrito in half - it has no rice, tons of shredded cheese, (who tf puts shredded cheese in a Mexican burrito) and some brown colored guacamole with tons of tomatoes in it. What the hell is this? I was so upset. It was literally a sloppy gooey mess. I began to just pick out the meat and attempted to eat that so that I wouldn't spend the rest of the day starving but the meat was inedible. It was dry and full of fat- it honestly tasted old. My coworker actually loves this place and even she agreed the whole thing was garbage. We literally threw the entire burrito in the trash. And they're charging $12 for that. Insanity. Places named "El Something" for Mexican food in SoCal - 1 of 2 The name El Tarasco takes me back in time. And, upon eating at the MdR location, I didn't allow my past experiences and preconceptions to color this recent experience. It was a blank slate event. El Tarasco was a collegiate sort of haunt, essentially a dive on a side street in the El Porto neighborhood wedged between El Segundo and Manhattan Beach. That said, it wasn't at all surprising that the somewhat pedestrian surfers (and others with slurred speech) from my college who wore the stereotypical Hussong's Cantina long sleeve t-shirts or hoodies went there and raved about it in "hey, wow, man" style. El Tarasco had pub height seats around a counter and very little room inside. However, the one time I did go, the food was good, cheap, and plentiful. I don't know if it's still there or set up like that. Fast forward to 2020 and beyond and the name El Tarasco is found in several places in SoCal. A I found this one in what I'd consider Marina del Rey (MdR) more so than Venice, though it's probably Marina Peninsula. When I was a teenager, we'd mistakenly call the beach at the end of this boulevard "Washington Beach" instead of Venice Beach, and rode the Culver City Washington Blvd. bus, or our bikes, to go to the beach here. When any single location eatery goes chain, I tend to be a little skeptical. I wonder, "Will they lose their grip on their product, style, vibe, and personality?" This El Tarasco is in a great location on Washington Blvd. and the interior is clean enough, but still a little small. The lady tending to the tables let me survey the menu for a while and then came over. On a specials sidewalk board outside, they were featuring fajitas for $9.50! And that included a drink. I don't often get fajitas because of the onions and peppers in the mix, but I couldn't decide on any of their other platters, so I went with the fajitas. The skillet of fajitas was delicious. The flavors of everything in it were very good. Since fajitas aren't served combination style, I wondered if I'd be satisfied with this skillet as my dinner. I was. I'd have even given the early El Tarasco at least 4 stars. The only demerits would have been the lack of creature comforts and possibly even the potentially annoying clientele. With the food I ate, its prices, its great location, the scents wafting through the air, and the pleasant service, I'd push this El Tarasco to 5 stars. What it doesn't have is easy parking. But, it's otherwise all packaged up for you in a popular area, so don't be looking a gift horse in the mouth. read more

Authentic 'Chile Colorado' beef stew! They call it red chile plate on the menu. Get that! The cheesy refried beans were to die for! Use the flour tortilla to grab some red chile and refried beans and be prepared for the flavor! The flour tortillas had those signature light brown bake marks that reminded me of home. They charged me for the highest priced burrito on the menu that comes with meat just because I added those 4 things. So my burrito came out to be almost 10 bucks. Now sure, charge me extra for guac and sour cream but an almost 4 dollar different? Yikes. I'll pass the next time for sure. It also took about 7-10 mins. To make said bean and cheese burrito. El Tarasco holds a special place in my heart. The Michoacan love story, the immigrant success, all the nights where an El T burrito was the last thing I ate before drifting off to a boozy sleep -- or the first thing I ate after pulling my formerly boozy self from bed. I've turned whole offices on to El T, and they never stop going. Well not much has changed, except I don't live anywhere near an El Tarasco. So today, I took a drive to Venice, sat down, and ordered two chicken tacos dorados with guac and rice and beans. The salsa tastes the same, the chips are still full-circle corn tortillas fried on-site, and the service was kind and quick. Oh and the taco plate was out of this world and just what I'd expected.
