I went to this location for breakfast as recommended by the hotel I was staying at. I arrived just a few minutes after they opened hoping to have a quick fresh breakfast before starting my day. Unfortunately, that was not the case. The bacon was cold, the bread was cold, the grits were not ready. Even after my waitress bringing out new "hot" bread, it was still not good. It didn't seem toasted. Just hot. The service was good, but the kitchen was clearly struggling. Not sure if this was an off day, or if it's always this bad. read more

This was Our second time here in two weeks and it did not disappoint!!! It is a Beautiful old building with cool architecture. Autumn was our waitress .. The most friendly beautiful young lady ;) The Hot coffee and Hot chocolate with whip cream was delicious and we loved how they use different types of mugs for everyone Our Breakfast was cooked to perfection and very tasty, the portions were enormous and we ended up taking half of it home with us. 4.5 stars! Had a great lunch with colleagues at this historic eatery in downtown Lynchburg. Autumn was an absolute gem. Polite, professional, attentive, welcoming... All while respecting the conversation going on at the table and being mindful not to interrupt. I started with a glass of sweet tea. One sip and I knew I was in the south, for real. Perfectly sweetened, like a glass of 'Southern Champagne' should be. I started with an order of fried pickles. The portion was more than enough to share and they were everything I wanted them to be. Battered and fried, and served with a generous portion of cool and creamy ranch dressing for dipping. A southern staple, and this place did it right. For lunch I had the Reuben with a side of fries. The bread was perfectly toasted and crispy, the sandwich was stuffed with lots of tasty corned beef and sauerkraut, and the fries were piping hot. I'm glad I had a light breakfast that morning because that sandwich was so filling and so good. I noticed that they also serve breakfast all day. My coworkers both decided to get breakfast entrees for lunch, and they looked amazing. Especially those biscuits. The table beside me ordered a huge plate of pumpkin pancakes. I could smell them from the second the server brought them out from the kitchen. Needless to say, I'll definitely be back to check out their breakfast options. Visiting our daughter that's a student at Randolph College and wanted to take her out for a birthday breakfast. Nice short walk from our hotel. A bit of a wait, but that was to be expected given that it was also Valentines Day. The hostess greeted us and kept us updated on an approximate wait time. Ultimately, waited for about 20 minutes. The wait time proved to be 100% worth! The menu had something to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. Our waitress was swamped covering two stations, but so attentive to our table. Coffee, OJ and waters were delivered quickly. Once our order was taken, our food was delivered piping hot within 10 minutes. Our meals were incredibly delicious and very generous in portion size. My partner and I came here for breakfast and had a great experience overall! The space is open and spacious with plenty of seating--I especially loved the window seats with all the sunlight pouring in, such a relaxing vibe to start the morning. I ordered the cinnamon roll, which was decent, though I was hoping for something a little more gooey. The strawberries on the side were a bit bitter, and I think fresh ones would've made a big difference. The coffee was solid and paired nicely with the meal. Service was fantastic--our server was super friendly and quick, which made the experience even better. All in all, a pleasant spot for breakfast with a lot of potential. If you truly want good Market at Main, go to the one on Wards Road. This location is sloppy, service sucks, and I did not have a great experience with the people who worked there but maybe they were just having bad days. The food was good, but they forgot half of it on DoorDash, I called, and they said they were closing soon and couldn't do much about it. I have not been inside but if it is like the one on Wards, I bet it is pretty. read more

I really wanted to love my visit to Market at Main. Unfortunately, it was just ok. My first time visit was a few weeks ago and it was packed .. super packed!!! Once I finally got seated , I was really looking forward to this dining experience. Service was cool. The young lady provided me with very attentive and patient service. I ordered black coffee ( I hated it). I also requested water and a mimosa. Clearly , I was thirsty!!! The night prior to my visit , I decided on the stuffed French toast. For my one side I picked bacon and I added a side of potatoes. All of it was very lackluster to say the least. I don't regret coming here because it was on my list and apparently Market at Main is a staple in Lynchburg. I do regret ordering what I had but I will return to try other things. If you are looking for that country, homestyle atmosphere , this is your place. Get ready to stand in line (bc there will likely be one); thankfully counter bar seating is available. read more

The market at Main was a great find for downtown Lynchburg. The Virginian hotel highly recommended it for reasonable, priced quality food, but mostly I came here to try the salad. I had the salad of the seven hills with grilled chicken and cup of French onion soup. While the soup was nothing to write home about, I found the salad one of the best that I've ever had. The ingredients were fresh and full of taste. The amount was just right and afterwords. I felt like I had a very good tasting meals that was healthy. The white staff was incredibly friendly and quick and helpful. She even brought me two types of dressing so that I could try those. I found the balsamic vinegar at the best. read more

Sometimes you just want a homey, cozy diner with a downtown historic vibe. Market At Main knows who it is and does it well. It's not trying to be anything other than a great casual breakfast and lunch spot. If you want fancy food, this isn't it. Pictured is the crab cake eggs Benedict.... Eggs were poached well and there was a generous amount of holladaise sauce to soak into the English muffin along with the yolk. And the Southern Reuben which was a nice spin on a classic. This has shaved Turkey, coleslaw and house made pimento cheese on grilled and buttered seeded wheat bread. Grilling this sandwich puts it over the top, and that pimento cheese is the star. The consistently good service is a bonus! read more

I have been eating at Market at Main from the very beginning. Now they have 3 1/2 locations but I am still wedded to the main street original place. I was there today Sunday morning with my daughter who was in town from Brooklyn for a few days. We sat at a table out front on a very nice day. There is only room for two tables out front so I was glad that we were fortunate to get one of them. Our white person today actually turned out to be one of the daughters of the owner. She said he is mostly retired these days and the work of management is mostly done by her older sister. She said her dad still shows up regularly but just hangs out and reads the paper and chats with people. I don't usually go beyond the standard sweet tea at this place but today I was feeling festive so had a Long Island drink which has multiple alcohols with a splash of Coke. Can't say I would do it again, but it was fun for a one time experience. I had the gravy biscuits with a couple of scrambled eggs and cheese and apples. The gravy had a bit of a notable pepper flavoring, which surprised me a little bit, but was quite nice. I still am sad that the place still closes up at two PM because supper time was one of my favorite times to go there. But they are open seven days a week. I am still trying to figure out how I can eat out at some of my favorite downtown restaurants more regularly because the price of eating out like the price of art has gone up considerably in the 20 years I have lived downtown! read more

The waitress (who kept calling us "sweetheart"-ugh) got my order wrong. I sent back my sausage eggs benedict for the classic that I ordered. I waited THIRTY min. & saw a large party who came in after us receive their meals. I complained to other staff, & finally received my breakfast. No apologies for the mishap on the part of our waitress. My dish was comped by the staff. This waitress needs to stop calling customers "Sweetheart", start paying attention and apologize when it is appropriate. read more

Overall, the food was not great. The pictures online looked terrific, but some meals did not live up to expectations. Most of the basic items were very good, though. Next time, I would go with the more basic, safe options: biscuit, pancakes, and sandwich options. read more

I did go for breakfast and I had no problems with the surface, the food just wasn't special compared to any other breakfast place, especially for the higher price. Came here this morning because the place we usually go to downtown was closed! I am so glad I did, reminded me of when I last came here many years ago. It has an old Americana Main Street country store feel! This place has lots of room, tables, and chairs! The waitress was very kind and gracious! The food we ordered came out relatively quick! The food was delicious and fresh! The southern grits were fantastic! The accompanying salsa complimented the Breakfast burrito perfectly! The piping hot black coffee was good, not great! This place was a fun discovery we have simply stumbled upon unintentionally while strolling through town on our way back from a caving convention in Tennessee. The restaurant was dimly lit, the type of shaded indoors you encounter in the sun baked south. Think tall stamped tin tile ceiling and large blade slow fans. There are some classic style booths as well as tables to pick from for your preferred dining style. The food was very good and well prepared. The remoulade that comes with the green fried tomatoes was very delectable and works well to contrast the slight natural sweetness of the pancakes as well. We tried the flight of pancakes in order to sample them and enjoyed all 3. Subtly sweet and fluffy. The coffee was the only disappointment. Oddly, the party that likes dark strong coffee liked it, but I found it lacking. The service was phenomenal, hospitable, accommodating, and friendly. If you are vegan or vegetarian, they will be able to substitute the meat side with a vegan option. read more

PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED TIME OR MONEY. Breakfast scrambled eggs were so finely chopped you had to use a spoon to eat. Two small thin pieces of bacon, sausage "patties" were awful, and coffee was old. And at 8:30 in the morning, no one wants to hear hard rock music. On top of all of that, it was expensive. I absolutely LOVE this restaurant! It looks like a cute diner complete with unique drinks, pastries, and snacks around the waiting area. You can see the chefs cooking in their open kitchen set up. All of the workers I've met were very friendly. They have a big menu with many tasty options. I recommend the Kanawha crab cake sandwich, potato cakes, house chips, and pimento grilled cheese. All top of the line and so so tasty. I always stop by to get the crab cake when I'm near Lynchburg, it's my favorite! Nothing but good things to say about this restaurant, definitely give it a try when you're downtown. They're always busy, but it's so worth the wait! I would also recommend going to only this location. Their other site on Wards Road is smaller and doesn't have the whole menu, but it's still a good option if you can't get to the original location. read more

Service was excellent and accommodating. We made a last minute Mother's Day reservation and they wrote us down, having our table ready within 5 minutes of our arrival. Food was excellent. Our party ordered a split of breakfast and lunch. Everything was delicious and left us satisfied, but not too full. The establishment was roomy and we liked having one large round table to chat with all of our party members. The echo was loud, but not too much that we couldn't converse. Overall great place. Same great food but the new location does not have the same aesthetic , something about it just makes it unfamiliar , and they no longer serve the ice cold drinks they used to have at the front door. I used to eat at the old location every weekend but since they opened the new one I think I've been maybe twice. There was some kind of argument between the manager and a waitress. The manager was yelling at this poor girl about a mistake she made with the food. It was loud enough for all of the tables to hear. We felt very awkward and humiliated for this poor girl he had just made cry in front of us. I hope that manager learned a lesson from this. I woke up hungry and pursued my breakfast choices close to the Craddock Terry Hotel where I'm staying. Market on Main (MoM) appealed to me based on the diverse breakfast menue items displayed on Yelp! The actual AND specials menu at the restaurant encouraged me even more. I decided on the Low County Benedict, a compliment to a slough of Benedicts on their regular menu. It promised Virginia Ham, Pimento Cheese, and Fried Green Tomatoes. My first bite indicated something was off; it was the ham, it was salty AF. Although I made it through the first half, I removed the ham on the second half and the dish was much tastier. I encourage MoM to change ham immediately! Other than that, beautiful place, excellent attentive service, and reasonable prices. Cheers! read more

What a wonderful find in downtown Lynchburg! So much history in this building, and you can feel it when you walk in. And the food here is delicious. Be sure to read the history of the joint on the back of the menu. A year's worth of combining two side by side store fronts and renovating the inside from top to bottom led to where it is today... a historic place with a massive menu, great service, and reasonable prices. The french onion soup and half spinach salad I had were divine. The kids portions were huge. Can't wait to return here! read more
