Had a whimsical drink in a spot with lovely decor. Really enjoyed the mirrored pillars with menus. You should note that the hand-written menus on the walls around the restaurant are for design only. I tried to order a dish listed and was informed it was no longer on the menu. My actual ordered dish was well-prepared. Service was friendly, but she got my dining companion's order totally wrong-one ingredient omission and one substitution of side dish...& they couldn't/wouldn't accommodate the request for the addition of another ingredient. The waitress also announced that her shift was ending and presented us with the bill... Which was fairly awkward as we ordered dessert and coffee on the spot so it felt very rushed at the end. Authentically French menu with attentive service at New York Theatre district prices. Came on a weekday for dinner. It's a very clean dining area with candlelit tables and a separate bar + seating area, plus there were a few tables outside (even in the winter), though they seemed like a substantial seating downgrade from the indoor seats - on a busy street corner and right off the sidewalk, so very exposed. We were lucky enough to get a reservation for an indoor table. Go for that if you can. For dinner, we started with the french onion soup, which was served traditionally, though ours was lukewarm. Unclear if this is normal for this restaurant so it can be eaten right away, or if the soup was prepared much earlier and they elected not to heat it up. I would say the broth had a decent flavor and the melted cheese added just the right salty contrast to the flavor of the onion and beef stock. (This appetizer is $16 per person) For the main course, we elected to try the duck breast. It's a decently sized portion. They serve it thinly sliced and cooked rare to medium rare, on a bed of mashed potatoes, steamed spinach, and mushrooms. The duck has a naturally fatty and gamey flavor, and tasted fresh. The accompaniments were adequate. If you want the duck cooked a bit longer, you can ask for that as well. The flavor gets a bit blander, but the meat will be more tender if that's to your liking. ($38 per person) Our server, Madeline, was very polite and checked on us often. I would say this is a place worthy of a birthday or anniversary dinner. Expect it to get crowded, but we found it was still quiet enough to hold a conversation without yelling, which was nice. The service was great, our waiter was very knowledgeable, the only negative was that the special for the day ran out and my friend had to settle for his second option. He was patient with us and never bothered us throughout our meal and I always appreciate that. If you dinged up with mastercard credit card, you can get $10 statement credit back. 5/5 Steak - best steak I've had in a long time, perfect temperature, sauce and mashed potatoes (not too salty but full bodied flavor). 4.5/5 tuna tartare was tasty over a bed of seaweed salad with crostini on the side but was definitely more Japanese inspired than french. 3/5 pot de creme - first one had an eyelash/short hair on it, thankfully they replaced. Second one was good, but not a huge fan of the texture compared to pot de creme's I have had before (more mousse-y and airy). Marseille is a French restaurant located close to the Theatre district of NY City. The menu is typically French inspired dishes with a full-service table service. Although we did not have reservations, we were able to obtain a table for two by the window, which had a nice view of the street activity. The front desk was fast and efficient, and table service was prompt after we were seated. The menu has a nice variety, and our meal consisted of a starter and entrees. Starters consisted of the Warm Goat Cheese Croustillant and Soupe a L'oignon Grantinee (French Onion Soup), which the soup was excellent with caramelized onions and melted gruyere. Entrees were served in good timing, Branzino and Jarret d'Agneau (braised lamb shank), both prepared very nice and a nice entrée portion. A nice bonus from them is recognizing our anniversary with a pair of complimentary drinks at the end of the meal. Like many of these restaurants, the table are close together, so private conversations and noise level is high, but other parts of the restaurant may be better away from the smaller tables. Overall, dinner was very well presented, and the food and service was respectable for a return visit if we found ourselves in this area again. I can't even begin to count the number of trips I have made both up & down 9th Avenue and across 44th street noticing Marseille, making a mental note "I want to return here one day soon"..this I said each of the 100's of times I passed. In the day, the charming curbside tables with heaters above, flower filled planters and seemingly a roster of sidewalk staff, at night, the lights showcasing a Bistro with smart lighting, floor tiles & sexy curved banquets. The area is the furthest place that you might want to sit outside at..the area is a relentless expression of traffic, fumes, horns & deranged, aggressive panhandlers, with only a slight ray of sunshine can peek through the surrounding buildings. Yet, we have virtually extinguished the indoor spots from Hell's Kitchen to Times Square and it was a stunning, crisp fall day. So, a table for 2 on the south east side of 44th street it was ! Fabulous Moroccan Bloody Mary, very fairly priced. I mention they do have a bottomless flavored Mimosa option, why anyone would want to drink not one but many glasses of sugar laden sugared bubbly is beyond me, but it is an option for I believe 25$ for 90 minutes. A very nice French-African menu, everything from French Omelets to Shakshuka, prepared & cooked just right. We were never rushed, service was genuine. One note, the staff is extremely protective of their guests, immediately sending off any persistent interruption from the street. Perfect location for pre or post Theater. read more

Last time we were here was 5 years ago, loved it then and still love it. With all that has been happening in the restaurant world, they still have been able to maintain service, quality and taste. Our server was excellent, very attentive, made our evening very enjoyable. We started off with cocktails. We ordered the Escargot and the Duck Liver Pate. Both were delicious. Entrees were the Duck (substituted fries for veggies and sauce on the side) and the Petite Bouillabaisse, which was fantastic, filled with perfectly cooked seafood and just big enough. Came here for lunch and I would highly recommend if you're in the area looking for French food. I had the Madame croque, which was their special and it was delicious. It came with house made chips, which were very crunchy and packed a lot of flavor. The service was very attentive. I came here during Christmas weekend with my family. Ambiance is really nice. They have a coat check in case you don't want to be dragging your winter coats to your table. Waitstaff are also really nice and pleasant. For Christmas weekend, they had a prix fixe menu for $80. I got to try the lamb, cavatelli with mushrooms, lobster bisque, grilled octopus, eggnog creme brûlée, and chocolate mousse with peppermint bark. The best dish of the night was definitely the grilled octopus. It served with an acidic pesto sauce that was so delicious. For my main, I had a half rack of lamb. It was mediocre. It wasn't the worst lamb chop I've had but at the same time, I definitely had better elsewhere. The cavatelli with mushrooms was served in a cream sauce that was good. Out of all the appetizers, the grilled octopus was still my favorite. The lobster bisque was not great. It was quite disappointing and lacked any umami. For dessert, my partner enjoyed his eggnog creme brulee and I found the chocolate mousse to be spot on. It wasn't overwhelming sweet and had enough richness with each bite. Part of me wonders if their regular menu is any better but based off the prix fixe for the holidays, I would not come again. Marseille is an interesting place. Sometimes it's a great experience and sometimes not. I think it's worth 3.5 stars actually. The créme Brûlée is fantastic. And at one seating ( I've been about ten times) the trout was the best ever. But then there are other times I've eaten there ( Christmas Day 2024) that was a supreme disappointment. ( steak was insanely 'peppered' to the point of it being off the charts hot) . It just wasn't a good value that day. Service can be great - or sometimes not. In general I'd say it's a bit overpriced for the experience. If money is of no concern you can have a great meal here - or maybe just a decent one. The atmosphere is splendid. The last time I went I sat at the bar and had crème brûlée and a scotch. The bartender was fantastic. ( he has a Mohawk) If the staff were universally like him that would be a fantastic coup for the establishment. I've had great meals at marseille but have always been a bit queasy about the cost. I've also had mediocre meals there with the same high price tag. 3.5 stars seems more accurate. I doubt I'll go back for a full meal. But it might be worth going if they are on their 'A' game. We came here before catching a show at 7. We let our waiter Alonso know that we had a show and he was very helpful in making sure that our food arrived quickly and we made it out in time. The food was really delicious--our party of 5 shared the large bouillabaisse and a few appetizers. Everything was tasty--our favorites were the warm goat cheese and oysters. The ambiance was very charming and elegant. I also have to express my gratitude to our waiter, because after I spilled my martini he graciously brought me another one on the house. I am vegetarian so sometimes my choices are limited at some restaurants, and the portions are so HUGE everywhere, I always waste food. I had the bibb salad and it was excellent. The lettuce was to die for and the dressing was just right. My one colleague had the pasta Marseillaise and she said it was excellent. The restaurant is beautiful indoors. We sat outside since the weather was so nice. I had the skate (fish) with mash and spinach. It was delicious. The chicken schnitzel was pretty good as well. I had a grapefruit vodka drink that was so yummy my mouth is watering as I write this. The escargot appetizer was very tasty. My only gripe was the bread they serve which is a little roll that is hard as a rock. Service was skimpy even though we were practically the only customers. But the food.... Yup! Have been here many times but tonight's experience was really a downer. Brought two of my employees here for a holiday dinner, 7:15 on a Saturday. Apparently they were understaffed but the service was horrendous to say the least. The evening started well but no one came to take our food order for at least 20 minutes when I had to ask the floor manager for help. We ordered 3 bowls of soup (Fish Soup and French Onion) and a few dishes to share and not 1 minute passed before the rest of the food came out all at once, including hot dishes. Aside from not giving us adequate time to finish the soup, there was not enough room on the table for everything - and no sharing plates were offered. Very awkward. Should I have communicated better or perhaps should the server have asked us if we wanted everything all at once or not?? The risotto quickly grew cold. Then no one came to check on us and and I had to ask the busboy to clear the table, 20 minutes after finishing. Not warm. Felt old. Chewy in the "you will never finish chewing this" way not a good way. Awful. Fava Bean Hummus. Not really hummus. Some creamy dip with soft almost wet cracker-like items stuck into the dish. Orange sauce on it. No idea what it was. Flavor - pretty much none. Bistro salad. Lettuce and virtually nothing else. No effort went into this. A complete disappointment. Poulet Roti. Overcooked. Difficult to cut. Part of that was the crappy knives, part was the chicken itself was tough. Pretty much flavorless. Burger Americain. Overcooked. Small. Dry. Could be the worst meat we've ever had in a hamburger. Served cool. Ketchup on the side might have been two tablespoons. Maybe three? Bun was a zero. No swing, just a bad miss. Dessert Marquise au Chocolate Croustillante. Another dish with very little flavor. Yes, there was chocolate. Zero hint of pistachio. The best item of the entire night was the three cherries on the plate. How can a chocolate dessert be something that two chocolate lovers take a couple of bites of and then leave on the table? Only when it's pretty bad. I apologize to anyone who was working hard at Marseille to do a good job and may be stuck in a bad environment. I went for a pre-theatre lunch with my retired woman's group. Everyone was blown away with the service and the food. Everyone raved about their food. I had the Salade Nicoise - it was delicious. There is something for everyone (as in a hamburger- which I was told was great). The onion soup, sandwiches, omelettes were all very good I was told. The service was excellent also. The service was good and most of the food was cooked to perfection and flavorful. The escargot was tender and was not overpowered by the butter and garlic. There was a good balance between the garlic herb butter and escargot. I just wish there was more bread to dip in the butter. The Honey Glazed Duck was cooked to a perfect medium rare, it was also extremely tender, and the sides compliment the dish really well and was full of flavor. There was no need to use the salt and pepper on the table. The creme brûlée was to die for. The creamy custard had a rich vanilla flavor and they didn't go overboard with the caramelize sugar. The extremely thin layer of caramelize sugar was just enough to give it the infamous crunch you expect but not overpowering that it upstage the custard. The only downside of the entire meal was the soup. The onion soup came out first and looked amazing. The cheese was melted perfectly and arrived bubbling hot. The only issue was it was so bland and flavorless that I thought I lost my taste and need to go get tested to make sure I don't have COVID. It tasted like the soup sat in a warmer all day and all the condensation watered down the soup. The crostini was overly soggy and also tasted like it was soaked in water. My eyes were seeing onion soup, I smell the onion, but tasted nothing. My glass of water had more flavor. I had to lick the lemon I had at the table to make sure it wasn't my taste buds. I think that I might have a new (well, only) French go-to spot in Hell's Kitchen. Also, the restaurant is adjacent to the Theater District, which makes it a perfect spot for pre-/post-show bites and drinks. We dropped by Marseille to check out its Restaurant Week menu and were pretty pleased with the variety on the special menu. Walking into the restaurant will take you straight to France, which makes for a pleasant dining experience. For my dining pleasure, I had the Kabocha Squash Gnocchi, Branzino (Parsnip purée, cauliflower, black truffle dashi), and Toffee Pudding with Pecan Ice Cream. Hands down, the Branzino had to be one of the best that I have eaten in NYC. The fish was flaky and the skin was crisp. Also, the Branzino was perfectly seasoned. Everything was pretty amazing. While our first server was good and on point, he kinda dropped the ball in telling us or another server that his shift was ending during our meal. I came here during restaurant week and took advantage of their special where it was one appetizer or one dessert paired with one main course for $30. The price and value of this is reasonable, but the food was leaning more average. I ordered the salmon tartare which met standard but I'm not sure pairing it with the seaweed salad at the bottom was all that impressive. The skate wing main course I had was also average in terms of flavor and wasn't exactly the best pairing with the other veggies in terms of flavor in my opinion.
