Choosing a mechanic without a trusted recommendation or significant research is like having unprotected sex--it feels great for 2 minutes but could easily cost you thousands of dollars over the course of a lifetime. That said, I found Martin's Auto Repair on Yelp and took in mine Honda Accord that was suffering from squeaky breaks and AC impotence. Glenn was particularly nice over the phone and even offered the use of one of their courtesy vehicle's while they diagnosed my vehicle. Glenn was very candid about my car needing not only new brakes but also having alignment issues and he explained that they'd need to do an in depth exam of my AC system that could cost hundreds of dollars depending what the issue was.... Sure enough, I got some bad news and he outlined the costs and my options. I originally fought back on price and necessity of the new parts as I have always lacked trust in mechanics many of which are con artists--making it more difficult for guys like Martin and Glenn to deal with disenchanted soccer mom's and mechanically inept folks like myself. That said, Glenn took the time to educate me on exactly why I needed what and outline some other less costly options that would cut corners on the repair. We brought our car in for an unexpected problem which is always the worst way to try out a new auto repair place. They are in the neighborhood and we had been talking about trying them out for an oil change on one of the cars and that of course meant one of the cars broke down. Brought it in without an appointment and Glenn worked with us to get the diagnostic report done and repairs done. The car is older and we are not sure if we are keeping it much longer so it is helpful to know some other things we might want to get done if we decide to keep it long term. There was not a high pressure sales pitch to get things done like other places. Communication with report and specifics by email was great. No surprises. Martin's auto Repair NOT THAT GREAT! YELP REVIEWS ON MARTIN'S AUTO - SO POSITIVE, BUT THAT'S NOT MY EXPERIENCE I called Martin's and a guy asked to call me back. He had time to research my question, what will an oil change cost? He called me back and said, "oil change, with oil weight and model specified, $35. He told me it would take 30-60 minutes and it would cost $35. But they took two hours and charged "$55". I won't/can't dispute the very positive reviews, their lengthy history, hell, these are the actual reviews that led me here. My experience? I was overcharged by 57%. FIFTY SEVEN PERCENT! As I complained, the owner, I assume he was the owner, came out but there was no give: the bill; was the bill. Listen, this was a $55 oil change vs the promised $35 oil change. It was handled. But I did my research, I called around, I read all the feel-good reviews Martin's had and they still shived me. MY ADVICE? BE CAREFUL WITH MARTIN'S. Earlier this week, I came back to my parked car and it had left me a nice present in the form of an anti-freeze puddle on the ground (in other words, my car was heavily leaking green liquid) -_- Me being still relatively new to Phoenix, I didn't know where to turn to first. So of course, I turned to Yelp. I read all of the good reviews on here and was willing to give these guys a shot, much to the dismay of my father who said I should have went to the dealership. Plus, they were able to take me in on such short notice, and I support small business. The price they quoted me to replace my leaking Water Pump Hose was well under what i expected, and they were able to finish it rather quickly. I was late to work still, but for being a walk in customer, a half hour late to work was well worth it. The shop was clean, people were friendly, I didn't feel pressured at all, and no one tried to upsell me (I'm in sales, its quite annoying). Excellent, Professional work environment I got my car fixed on a Monday. It's Friday today, and I open my mail box to see a hand written Thank You post card from these guys saying they appreciate my business. Never have I ever received a post card from ANY company, let alone an Auto Shop saying thank you. Normally, I'm not one for the cheesy and fake customer service routines, but this was real and genuine. Customer service gets two stars: Glenn in the office was helpful, thorough and attentive. No one was pushy or shifty like some places. Bonus star for not requiring an appointment for oil changes like some shops. Courtesy gets a star: John gave me a ride home in the company car while they worked on my truck. Service gets a star: the turn-around was a lot quicker than expected. I got a very detailed diagnostic emailed to me showing me exactly the terrible condition of my truck. Price does not get a star: full synthetic oil change was about $15 more than what I've paid in the past. TL;DR: Good shop, will go again. read more

My vehicle went in for one issue and came out with several malfunction, including my engine now smoking.Also, when I received the diagnosis list of all "problems" they found on my vehicle, some of them mention repairs I did already with a very trustworthy mechanic friend from my hometown (miss him). As an example, they (Martin's employee's) diagnose my radiator and my alternator as, "Original OAM (manufacturer's), needs replacement soon". Well, guess what! I had change my alternator 3 times (including recently, not long ago) and my radiator I change it twice! (I had this card for over 15 years. Was aiming to be scammed if I did not know mechanics and be so proactive about my car! PERHAPS! Now, the part that they did "repair" was made with an after market part (which seems this place run with) but also was not place were the original part belongs! Of course, it is an after market part! causing the change of the original lay out of my engine! ( The part was fixes to the outer part where the original part was, now it's exposed and vulnerable to break again, plus new holes had to be done to attached the part. 3rd: They tried to charge me for a service I did not authorize nor condone...Also, now I have a damage sensor that was not damaged before stopping at this shop....What's wrong with you people!!!! Sloppy, Bad, AND POOR QUALITY OF WORK AND MANAGEMENT! (Forgot to mention the poor costumer service at the phone) My personal and real advise: STAY AWAY FROM THIS MECHANIC SHOP!!!! Phoenix has three things in excess: Barbershops, Starbucks aaaand MECHANIC SHOPS! Tons of them!!! Don't settle for poor service and possible scams! That's my personal advice and review. I found these guys on yelp and have been very satisfied with the service. The office is clean, organized and friendly. I needed a ride home after dropping my car off, and they provided shuttle services and even picked me up from work when my car was ready. My brakes were squeaking noise, and I couldn't tolerate the sound. I was on the verge of going insane. They fixed my brake, and found out what was causing the noise (brake pads, and calipers were installed wrong). They were good at communicating and honest throughout the entire process. The price was fair for the time and efforts. I just left the shop and my brakes are now working like new... and another auto-shop may have elected to do an entire brake job. I love Martin's Auto Repair!!! I originally went to Martin's when I first moved to Phoenix and my car was overheating non-stop in the summer. I made the mistake of going to the dealership first (I have a Nissan Xterra) and was quoted an outrageous price of $4000+ to not only fix the overheating problem but to fix everything else wrong with my car. Considering my car is 10 years old and only worth about $4000, I was in quite a bit of a pickle. Then, my step dad recommended I look at Garagefly.com and find a trusted auto repair shop. I found Martins and went with them because everyone rated them 5/5 and there wasn't a single bad review. I took in my car and told them about my experience at the dealership (which was ABC Nissan, by the way!) and after doing a thorough inspection of my car, they were able to fix the problem for less than $350!!! They also gave me a report of everything else they found and gave me a timeline on when the repairs should be done. Now I go to Martin's for my oil changes and usually check an item off my "needs to be done" list while my car is there. The staff is super friendly and they get you in and out quickly. I took my 1989 Mercedes into Martin's yesterday to get a few items repaired, an oil change and a complete checkup since I just bought it last month with 175,000 mi on it and it has been running a tad rough and stalling once in a while and the ac fan went out and it wasn't the fuse. The did the oil change and called me to say that whoever changed it last had stripped the drain plug and they wanted authorization for a $14.00 helicoil kit to retap and thread the plug. Very good since I told them I wanted to preauthorize any work or parts but I was very imopressed that they actually did so since no mechanic has ever done that. especially on such a cheap item (extra star for this). When the end of the day they said they didn't have the proper tools to check the ac fan motor or adjust the oddball fuel injection system but they did the complete checkout and found several major repair ityems in need of being done now or in the very near future and quoted me a written estimate for all needed work which I will use to get a second opinion at a German specialty shop. The facility is as neat and clean as a dentist's office and both Staff members I dealt with were very helpful, informative and polite. I won't take my car back since they aren't equipped for some of the work this vintage Mercedes needs now (frost plugs, fuel injection and ac fan) but I will go to them for work they can do like oil changes, radiator/coolant flushes, tranny service and brakes. I live one block away and they are good but I have a 21 year old car that is also a fairly rare model (300CE). They are located on the morning drive side of 16th Street and open at 7:00am and close at 5:30pm. read more

After years of feeling annoyed/outraged/disappointed/cheated by the auto service at the dealership, I decided to seek a new mechanic service. Some time ago I heard one of my co-workers rave about the mechanic she's being going to for 20+ years and for some reason that just stuck with me. Any business that can have a happy customer for 20+ is somewhere I want to go. I gave them a call on Monday morning since my engine light had come one over the weekend. I've only been once, so far, so I don't know if I got lucky or if this is how it always is, but when I called them that morning I was able to take my car in right after after our call ended. I thought I was going to have to go through this big ordeal of planning something ahead of time and figuring out who I could ask for a ride to and from work. Martin's Auto Repair made it super easy not only by getting me in right away but also by providing a timely shuttle service. When it comes to the services I was happy with the price, which they verified with me before doing any of the work (something the dealership never did). They also follow up with an email about suggested to-do's, which I appreciated. I plan to return to Martin's for all of that, they definitely have a loyal customer in me :D The only reason I'm not giving it a 5 is because I have only been there once. Had been referred to Martin's after my trusted mechanic closed. Took my car in for evaluation after I thought I saw a spot of oil in my driveway. Turns out one of the rubber cuffs on the front axle was cracked an it was actually lube grease on my driveway. but they came up with $3000 in recommended repairs, including replacement of both front axle assemblies. I declined Next visit wasn't entirely unsatisfactory. Motor that controlled left front window had failed and they fixed that at reasonable price. It was my last visit that revealed their egregious behavior towards women. I needed to register my car, but the "check engine" light was on. Took it into Martin's for evaluation and they said an oxygen sensor needed to be replaced. I've had that done a couple times before and it cost around $175. They called the next day and said they were going to have to hang on to the car longer because the oxygen sensor they had been sent was defective and they were waiting for a replacement. The next call I got was to tell me the car was ready and they were charging me $600. i immediately protested since they had not called with the estimate, nor had I given consent to proceed with the repairs. Their response was " We went ahead and did it anyway because we knew you had to get it past inspection." So their excuse for charging me three times the going rate without my permission was because "you had to get it past inspection." But the debacle doesn't end there. When I went to pick up my car, there was a huge crack across the windshield. There had been a small divot from a rock that had been there for about 8 years, but this was a 2 foot crack across my windshield. I asked to speak to the manager about it. He decided that bullying me was the way to go and said the "crack could have happened going over a bump." I failed to see the relevance but he continued to shout me down. He finally offered to repair the damage they had caused....if I paid them $150. So, they not only defrauded me by performing repairs without my permission at three times the normal price, they damaged my car and expected me to pay them to repair it. I doubt this scenario would have occurred if I were a guy. WOMEN, STAY AWAY! read more

This is an amazing example of good people doing good, honest work for fair prices and going above and beyond. I will never take my car anywhere else. I got a comprehensive analysis of my car emailed to me and explained to me in person with no pressure when I went for an oil change (no judgement after a year!). I immediately scheduled a brake fix. When I took my car back for the brakes, they not only vacuumed my car, but did some extra cosmetic things to my car without being asked and I wasn't charged. The dealership wanted hundreds for what they did for me as a kindness. Martin's is an exemplar of a family-owned and people-centered business. Their customer service is prompt and caring. I brought a car (2006 Ford Escape) into Martin's about a month ago for diagnostic work. I had done some shade tree mechanic diagnosis on the car myself and had got to point where my skill set had reached its limit. After having the car for a day they let me know what the problem was with great detail. The estimate, as fair as it was, more than we had planned or wanted to spend on the car, so we did not have the work done. So you may be wondering why five stars when I did not have them perform the recommended work. The fact that they did an honest evaluation of the car, wrote up a detailed report of work that needed to be done, and did not use any scare tactics or pressure to have me get the work done right away are the reasons. I took my son's vehicle in for service, they did a thorough inspection and I mean thorough, and it was in writing for every part of the car - good and bad news. Ladies, what a deal!! I needed an oil change and being new to living downtown, I wanted to find an honest place that wasn't going to try and upsale me. I didn't have any other transportation and I also wanted get a manicure down the street. They were so nice, Martin's took me to the nail salon and picked me up when I was finished while they serviced my honda. And they gave my car a clean bill of health, which really impressed me because it wouldn't have been hard to take advantage. Great service, honest, and willing to go the extra mile. BTW, I got my nails and toes done at Top Design Nails, only 1 mile or so north of Martins. The employees were professional and personable and, though I didn't take advantage, they have a courtesy vehicle to get you where you need to go rather than wait at the shop. They replaced the clutch in my Nissan Frontier about a year ago. After comparing prices for the job, the price was reasonable and service was fast, professional and courteous.
