The teenager has been here at least 5 times in the last 6 months and has been dying to bring me so we came to the Fort Street Mall location. Very simple menu. They make the noodles fresh and the broth is rich and tasty. I got the Nikutama with the soft boiled egg... yummy!!! They also have a good selection of tempura items. I got a sweet potato and zucchini. 2 bowls of udon and 3 pieces of tempura for under $30. The only thing that wasn't great is the parking. There's street parking but not a lot. Don't let the long lines deter you! They move quickly and it's worth the wait. They make the noodles from scratch on site, and you can even view the process when you first walk in. It all moves so quickly, you'll want to look at the menu beforehand. I got the Kake Udon which is the original broth. I added two zucchini tempura to accompany it, and I kind of wished I'd tried the Japanese potato tempura. It all looked so good! The regular size bowl is more than enough for one person, so best to start with that unless you're sharing. You grab a tray and let them know what you would like to order, then as you get your order you can proceed to the tempura station and pick whatever tempura, musubi, cone sushi you want. They have all kines of tempura to choose from. I got the Nikutama, beef soft poached egg with udon noodles and hot soap ( they have a cold option). The broth is so flavorful and the beef is amazing it easy to eat, juicy and every bite was so flavorful! As for my tempura, I got fish cake, shrimp and mushroom. Loved it all. When I used to work in downtown Honolulu, Marugame Udon was one of my weekly go-to places for a quick and delicious lunch. This time, it wasn't all that busy, and we were able to secure a table outside, arriving at 11AM when they opened. We ordered a large Nikutama udon with egg, and a regular curry udon. Both were prepared fresh (as always), and there's nothing like the taste of fresh udon. I was a little disappointed in the flavor of the curry sauce, but it was still very good. My wife loved her Nikutama udon. The workers in the front seemed slightly disorganized, and slower than before, but I only waited about 10 minutes from entering to exiting the restaurant. I've always seen the line and wondered about this place... On a staycation in Waikiki with my family, we decided to talk an early morning walk in the beach and worked up an appetite. Luckily it popped back into my memory. So the family and I walked over to this location on Kuhio Ave. we just made it as it opened around 11 am. The line was already turning the corner and we were debating if it is worth the wait. It's look quite intimidating but the line was moving, so we decided to stay. It took about 45 mins to get to the entrance. I tell you it is definitely worth the wait. The food was delicious and the udon noodles were perfection, soft and chewy. We ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry Bowl, Classic Nikutama and the Curry Nikutama. The curry udon was my most favorite. I couldn't slurp up the noodles and curry base fast enough, it was just so good! The restaurant also has a tempura section after you get the main dishes, and we tried the sweet potato and shrimp tempura, which weren't warm but still tasted pretty good! The prices were generous and the portions just right. Would recommend. This location definitely doesn't have as long of a wait as the Waikiki location, but is still very good. Parking is just a little tricky, since being in downtown. Our first meal in Hawaii didn't disappoint! Ambiance: the inside has the feel of concrete quick made interior. It's like most assembly food chains out there. Service: The staff were exceptionally nice and hospitable. I always ask the staff for their favorites and popular options. Kake: Ironically I forgot the chef's breakdown of ingredients as soon as we sat down, but I'm sure the kake was vegetarian broth. It's salty, definitely had sea weed in the vegetable mix when they were making the broth. So expect a hint of seafood. Overall nice simple dish. Curry Udon: I enjoy Japanese and Indian curry the most. This Japanese curry had a little sweetness to it which made for a complex curry flavor. The udon was well coated in the curry and gave out flavor with every chew. Definitely recommend it even if you've never had Japanese curry. It is complex but nothing too heavy or offensive. Onigiri: the onigiri was on point. The rice felt fresh and the ham on it went well with the whole packaging. I love udon and I love Marugame, but here on the island, this place is overhyped in my opinion. Parking - nightmare. Service - poor. Food - okay. Maybe it's better if you dine in, but we were not waiting in that line so we ordered takeout. For a business that has a separate window for takeout orders, you would think they would be more organized. They were not. They did not listen to any of the requests in my online order (like having the agedama on the side), we were missing items in our tempura order, and our bag of food did not come with any utensils (which I also asked for). We had no idea when our food had been ready since nobody notified us, but we arrived within the window Grubhub told us to and our udon soups were not hot anymore. Our tempura were also soggy and cold. For reference, our hotel was located 7 minutes away, but with the busy traffic on the street, it takes a few minutes longer for the trip + parking. In total, from picking up the food to opening the bag in the hotel room it was under 15 minutes. The staff at the pick up window are not very nice. Disappointing. Forget standing in line at Waikiki, this location is for us Kama'aina. Went in right when they opened for a nice brunch with my brother. Staff is quick and friendly. Although they are cafeteria style, I noticed they catered to their Kupuna customers and brought out their orders to them. LOVE that! As for the food, my first time trying Udon and I loved it. The sweet beef had a Smokey flavor and the egg was so delicious. Everything we ordered was very tasty.
