Little wooden bar and small tables upfront and in the back The agedashi tofu was ok, but too much bitter daikon on top. The dragon roll was good, though. I thought Marumi was fine, but not particularly great - granted, I didn't try their sushi, and only got one of the kitchen entrees. When ordering, I specifically tried asking the waitress which dishes were dry vs. in a soup, although there apparently were some communication issues because I inadvertently ordered a soup dish, but alas... The dish I got was the Seafood Miso Nabe ($27) - I ordered it partly because I saw there were a bunch of seafood items in there like shrimp tempura, scallops, squid, etc. but turns out it was only 1-2 pieces of each. The most plentiful thing in there besides the glass noodles was just cabbage. That being said, the taste was decent, but nothing special. I also tried the chicken katsu, which was average in quality. The interior of the restaurant has a typical Japanese restaurant vibe / atmosphere. The staff are pretty friendly and the service speed is decent. Overall, perhaps Marumi's sushi is better, but at least based on my experience, I have to give it 3 stars. read more

Marumi has been in Greenwich Village for quite some time and it's understandable how they've lasted this long. The prices are some of the most reasonable around in Manhattan and the quality is pretty dang good. I had the chef's choice sushi plate and the quality of the seafood was good. It included a few pieces that you don't normally see such as Anago (sea eel) or Uni. Marumi is a bit no frills but it's a neighborhood stalwart at this point. read more

This is a step above no frills in the best way! The Chef's Choice Sushi is priced very reasonably ($50 after tip and tax)!considering there is uni and toro. I really enjoyed the sweet shrimp and scallop as well. I always forget to ask for no wasabi, which came in each nigiri but it wasn't too bad! The sushi Jo was alright, though it didn't quite feel worth the $35. Finally, we received the seafood miso nabe (not pictured), but it came with thin cellophane noodles and vegetables. Unfortunately, the balance was off, with too many noodles and vegetables and not enough broth, so I wouldn't recommend it. You are not going to get premium quality sushi but guaranteed to have decent sushi at an affordable rate ($55/p all in). The staff also won't rush you out of the door once you are done, so it's perfect for a friends' catch up dinner. I'd stick with sushi and avoid wagyu, maybe also yellowtail (not fresh). I figured this was a way of getting possibly different things than I would have ordered myself, and was hoping that I would be pleasantly surprised by various fresh & delicious pieces similar to what I've had elsewhere with omakase. But while there were different pieces I didn't really find them that tasty or super fresh. Disappointing for me, but I hope my friend liked hers better. I didn't get a chance to ask as we were too busy talking about other things since we hadn't seen each other in a long while. So ended up shutting the place down (I think maybe they close at 9:30 and we left around 9:45). Restaurant ambiance is casual & clean though a fairly small place. What really bothered us though was that it was SO HOT inside though outside was so nice! I thought maybe a/c was broken but there was a period of about 5 min where we felt a nice cool blast of air before it went back to being swelteringly hot. The stand out in particular, was a truffled crab chawanmushi, which was a cross between soup and egg. custard. The umami from the dashi and the faint truffle scent really elevated this dish. There were a couple large pieces of crab as well. I could have easily eaten ten of these, and this dish alone makes the visit here worthwhile. I honestly can just eat those rolls all night long. Salmon was not bad but just pales in comparison to those two. The non-sashimi rolls were just okay or could just be our choice of Regular Shrimp Tempura Maki, Regular Spider Roll, and Dragon Roll. The shrimp tempura tasted like a McDonald's Fish burger to me lol Skip on Botan Ebi, it was not good and so pricy. I had high expectations it would be sweet but it was very slimy in an unpleasant way Would recommend sitting outdoors than indoors if the weather is nice cause it was quite stuffy sitting inside. Don't know if they have no AC or just didn't turn it on. The menu isn't crazy extensive and we didn't order a lot for a party of 4 but it was enough to fill us. The other evening I was craving for some quality sushi. Did the search and found Marumi. Somehow it's over rated. The appetite I ordered is the chaqanmushi- Steamed Egg custard. It was a nice surprise as it was served in cold. It's my first time trying the steam egg in cold. There is fish broth underneath and loads of seafood like crab inside. It's yummy and the flavor is great. But it would be better if the egg custard can be more sophisticated as you can see the bubble. It should be silly and smoothly for a good quality steamed egg. As for the chef's choice sushi, some sushi like scallop or toro is good. But I would hope the ika(squid) and uni to be fresher. Some raw fish were served warm and some were cold the timing to process the raw fish is not controlled well. For the Hygeian I see the room for improvement. We drove 6 hours to get to NYC and dealt with Jersey City traffic along the way (which seemed worse than NYC traffic). Then after a full afternoon of walking around NYC we were dead tired and starving, with a craving for some good sushi. I just happened to turn my head and saw this little restaurant with customers who looked like they were enjoying their meals. We decided to try it. We were greeted by a friendly voice (or maybe many friendly voices) and were fortunate enough to be seated in a back atrium-- a secluded refuge that immediately started to melt away the stress. Once the sushi and tempura arrived, our stress levels dropped down to zero. Quality ingredients and perfectly seasoned rice! The cost of about $70 per person (including soft shell crab) was worth it. We started off ravenous and we ended up amazingly filled and satisfied. Better than a SPA day for stress relief. Thank you to the staff for an excellent meal and great service!
