Service was very nice. Sushi was good. Not everything was good though but we got a nice variety. There was a 10% tax/fee added in after sales tax. Not sure what that was for. Not sure I'd be back.

Marumi has been in Greenwich Village for quite some time and it's understandable how they've lasted this long. The prices are some of the most reasonable around in Manhattan and the quality is pretty dang good. I had the chef's choice sushi plate and the quality of the seafood was good. It included a few pieces that you don't normally see such as Anago (sea eel) or Uni. Marumi is a bit no frills but it's a neighborhood stalwart at this point.

Marumi Sushi is one of the few remaining Japanese family owned sushi spots in NYC and it shows in every detail. The sushi sets a bar just above average, fresh, well executed, and satisfying, without diving into the omakase craze or 100+ per person prices. The rolls are done right, the service is friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere carries that authentic family owned charm you only get from a place that has been around for decades. If you want solid, fresh sushi without breaking the bank, Marumi is a must visit.

Food is great! Order the sushi B for lunch and it comes with 5 pieces of nirigi and a Cali roll for $20. The rice is seasoned perfectly. Just note that the lunches are cash only and you dont actually get miso soup. The soup is only for dine-in. This is a bit misleading especially when I was looking forward to the warm soup on the cold day. Hence less a star.

This was a really fun dinner. The atmosphere was great and all of the food was delicious. The fish was incredibly fresh with great flavor and good color. The servers and hostess were incredibly welcoming and were very attentive to water and multiple rounds of orders. I highly recommend and of the hand rolls, nigiri, and crispy rice. Everything else was very good as well. Totally perfect for a casual sushi dinner with incredibly nice staff. Definitely worth a try if you're in the mood for sushi.

This is a step above no frills in the best way! The Chef's Choice Sushi is priced very reasonably ($50 after tip and tax)!considering there is uni and toro. I really enjoyed the sweet shrimp and scallop as well. I always forget to ask for no wasabi, which came in each nigiri but it wasn't too bad! I think next time I'll try the Sushi Jo for slightly less but without uni. I arrived close to opening and there were already several parties. It filled up a decent amount shortly after, with families, couples, other smaller groups etc.

We ordered the rainbow sake cocktail, ginger saketini, the sushi Jo, and the seafood miso nabe. The sake cocktails were sweet and tasty, and at $12 each, we felt they were reasonably priced. The sushi Jo was alright, though it didn't quite feel worth the $35. Finally, we received the seafood miso nabe (not pictured), but it came with thin cellophane noodles and vegetables. Unfortunately, the balance was off, with too many noodles and vegetables and not enough broth, so I wouldn't recommend it. Overall, the service was fast and the presentation was good; the taste was average, but staff members were friendly.

The sushi is good but nothing special or particularly fresh. If you're looking for cheap and decent sushi at a sit down restaurant this is a good option. I got the Wagyu sukiyaki and my review is mainly based off of this dish. This was super disappointing. The meat was so tough and chewy. Not flavored whatsoever. There was hardly any soup in the pot too it was almost like a dry entree, which is not what it should be. The mushrooms and broth were good but overall it was so disappointing and not filling whatsoever especially for $27.

Used to be one of my favorite places to go around Washington Square Park. The quality of the food went down during the pandemic but it's still okay. The uni this time wasn't super fresh and the toto was quite tough. Other sushi rolls were fine though. The servers and sushi chefs are super nice. Request to sit in the back of the restaurant; it feels cosy.

Marumi isn't going to win any Michelin stars, and that's a good thing. I don't want the world knowing about this quiet, cozy sushi-ya with bargain prices and great quality. Where else can you find a Salmon Avocado roll for just $6, or a Rainbow Roll for just $16--WITHOUT being food poisoned? Everything we got hit the spot. Salmon lovers should make a platter of the Rainbow Maki, Salmon Avocado, Spicy Salmon, and Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice (just to change things up). Uni lovers will appreciate the Premium Mini Chirashi with uni. And tempura lovers will enjoy the perfectly fried, perfectly crisp Seafood Tempura. Wash it all down with some piping hot Genmai tea, and this is the kind of dining out I'd do every day...and still be able to retire comfortably!

I was going to give 4 star but think the 3 star reviews are not doing this place justice, and hence 5 to bring up rating. This is a value restaurant. You are not going to get premium quality sushi but guaranteed to have decent sushi at an affordable rate ($55/p all in). The staff also won't rush you out of the door once you are done, so it's perfect for a friends' catch up dinner. I'd stick with sushi and avoid wagyu, maybe also yellowtail (not fresh). The space is cute and has ample seating.

Entree with 5 pieces nigiri sushi + 2 rolls
    Ava C.

Super fresh fish. I am impressed by this place. The prices are super reasonable as well. I got a $27 entree that came with 5 pieces of assorted sushi and 2 rolls. The salmon and avocado roll was a standout, although everything was delicious. The service was excellent -- very friendly and attentive waiters. And the ambiance was so cozy and intimate... just what we needed after a long day exploring the city!

We came here because I was meeting up with a friend who had just gotten off work in the Washington Square Park area and had a broken toe so we didn't want to walk too far. Waitress was nice & gave her recommendations when we asked. We ordered edamame & spicy tuna over crispy rice (this was pretty good) as apps to share and I got a sweet plum wine (decent) while my friend had a Spanish wine as well as a white wine to drink. For mains, my friend ordered various individual pieces of sushi & a roll. I ordered the chef's choice which was 10 nigiri. I figured this was a way of getting possibly different things than I would have ordered myself, and was hoping that I would be pleasantly surprised by various fresh & delicious pieces similar to what I've had elsewhere with omakase. But while there were different pieces I didn't really find them that tasty or super fresh. Disappointing for me, but I hope my friend liked hers better. I didn't get a chance to ask as we were too busy talking about other things since we hadn't seen each other in a long while. So ended up shutting the place down (I think maybe they close at 9:30 and we left around 9:45). Restaurant ambiance is casual & clean though a fairly small place. What really bothered us though was that it was SO HOT inside though outside was so nice! I thought maybe a/c was broken but there was a period of about 5 min where we felt a nice cool blast of air before it went back to being swelteringly hot. Maybe I would've enjoyed the food more if it wasn't so uncomfortable.

The atmosphere here was a bit more lively and crowded compared to the more relaxed vibe of the UWS spot. I enjoyed my meal even more this time around. I started with the beet salad, which was delicious and offered great value given the generous portion size. it featured sliced beets, arugula, goat cheese, and walnuts. I also had my eye on the hijiki soybean salad--which is a bit smaller and reportedly homemade--so I may try that next time, along with the warm mushroom salad which looked very tasty. The edamame was standard but served as a nice starter. For my main rolls, I chose the salmon avocado and the yellowtail scallion. Both were very fresh and definitely worth ordering again. The salmon avocado roll had a nice touch of sesame seeds on the rice, while the yellowtail scallion was prepared with the seaweed on the outside. My boyfriend's sushi entree looked excellent, so I am considering that or the sushi-sashimi combo for my next visit. Now, having said that although the food was decent, there were a couple of questionable choices in the overall presentation and plating and the sauces that accompany the black cod bento box I ordered, which did not actually come in a box. Everything is brought out piecemeal so you don't get an actual meal before you, but a lot of little plates brought out at different times, kinda like the Japanese equivalent of Tapas. We have been to this location twice, hoping the first time was a fluke, and trying to give them a chance only for the second time to be worse. The waitstaff is entirely disengaged from the customers. They rush you through the order process and don't explain any of the menu offerings, such as what is the difference between the different platter options. When they do come over, you are greeted with the sweetness and warmth of an unemotionally flat "What do you want?" After you get your food, no one comes over to refill water and cups are initially filled halfway with too much ice. No one comes over to remove plates afterward, and they definitely show no interest in finding out if you are enjoying your meal in the least. The booth we were sat at had not been cleaned after the last party's use so there was sauce all over, and it got on the back of my pants, which I later discovered while walking home...the joy. After eating comes the best part, they come over with these tablets outlining your check on the screen. Meanwhile, the tablets are strapped to their bodies the entire time. They don't allow you to scrutinize the charges in peace, no, they stand there impatiently for the duration either swerving from side to side of tapping their foot signaling discomfort that you're taking way too long. The funny part is the straps have clips to remove the tablets so it's not like it's impossible to leave the tablet and come back shortly. The whole process feels very rushed and pressurized for you to tip with one of the predetermined button selections, which start at 25%. Ummm, service sucked so no, we're definitely NOT starting there. I guess now we're both disappointed. Eventually, you get no paper receipt for your records even if you ask for it to be printed. And the whole time, the waitstaff is with you judging you on your tipping and not even being graceful enough to restrain their reaction. So no, not going back, and definitely would not recommend as a place to have a good time. Now, if you're looking for an uncomfortable experience served by someone that completely ignores you during your entire time there and expects an exorbitant tip to boot, then yes, this is the place for you!

Do of course I use Yelp to find something that catches my eye close by where we need to be. I found umami Sushi. We usually can't go wrong with Japanese food or sushi. We had no problems finding the place. The description said it was a small restaurant and as we entered the dining area was very small. Our hotel room was probably bigger. That doesn't bother me especially if we get there, there tables for us to sit comfortably. I also trust my judgment when I find a place that seems to be popular by the locals. The restaurant was empty when we arrived. We were the only ones there, but for some reason we bring good vibes to the places we eat because not too long after we placed our order, people started coming in, to the point that the small dining room was packed. I love Omakase style Service and what we ordered was a sashimi/sushi platter for three and two special rolls. I thought I got to choose the rolls but even that was chefs choice. I was just a bit worried that they would give us the cheap rolls like spicy tuna or California roll. The platter came out and it was beautifully prepared with a piece of sashimi for each of us and the rolls the chefs chose, ended up being two of my favorite rolls. The types of fish they selected were also great quality fish. We were lucky to have placed our order before the crowd came in our we might have had to wait a while because how they prepared it would have taken some time. The service was just right. Because they got busy right away, the waitress was forced to attend to everyone and couldn't really socialize with us. In fact when we finished our platter we were debating what we wanted for dessert but the waitress didn't even ask us and instead she just brought us the bill, so we said to ourselves, "I guess we're not having dessert here." So we paid the bill and gave an opportunity for someone else to take our table.
