The food was good, but unfortunately the service completely ruined the experience. Our server, Tate, had an attitude from the very beginning. He took our order and then never once checked back to see if we needed anything. Meanwhile, he was constantly checking on the table behind us and would repeatedly walk right past us without even acknowledging our table. It felt intentional and honestly very uncomfortable. The worst part was when the bill came and we saw a 20% service fee added, for a table of three. Since when is a 20% service charge applied to parties of three? That's typically reserved for groups of six or more. When servers know they're automatically getting 20% no matter what, it really removes any incentive to actually provide good service. In this case, he certainly didn't earn it. He took our order, and that was it. Other servers cleared our table and brought the dessert menu. For some reason, Tate seemed like he didn't want to serve us and was giving us attitude the entire time. It was disappointing and frustrating. New York vibes in Beverly Grove! Super crowded and a nice spot to go for a date or group. We were a big group friends so even though we had a reservation it took them a while to seat us. But they made up for it and sent us some apps on the house. I loved loved loved the hamachi crudo it was amazing. The arugula fennel salad and chopped salad were very good too. I didn't like the Caesar salad it was way too fishy. Squash blossoms and truffle fries were a hit too. For entrees: We got the branzino and burger which were great too! I really didn't like the pomodoro or spicy vodka pastas and wouldn't get them again. I also don't love the steak as it's pretty salty. We got the date dessert which was good. This place has been talked about for awhile so I had to come and try it out. The toast ALONE was something that's been highly recommended so we ordered that to start, it was unreal, something I'd eat everyday if I can perfect the at home recipe lol. The zucchini blossoms were very cheesy - loved the tomato sauce on the side! We ordered some pastas for our entrees : cacio e pepe, spicy rigatoni & beef bolognese! I got the spicy rigatoni and cleared my plate. the other pastas were super good! I'd recommend them all! I didn't love the peach cobbler but my friends did! super cute intimate little spot serving up some really good food! Everything we got I'd get again and recommend - especially the toast!!! The male who helped our table was super sweet and helpful, we had a female waitress who was a bit rude to our table but whatever, the guy made up for it! Deducted a star due to the 20% surcharge which isn't the tip, that shocked us considering we already spent $240 on food/drinks, got that 20% surcharge & then we also had to tip 20%, so basically you're paying 40% extra on the tab.... Wish I could give a negative star. Was sooo looking forward to eating at this place. Unfortunately we were first greeted by a tall Burnett man who wasn't welcoming at all and told us to stand to the side and we weren't able to sit and order food until my other friends got there even though there were several tables open. Then we asked the woman working there a few minutes later if we could sit to order drinks and appetizers because we were starving...she was extremely rude and condescending, told us sorry there are no tables open for you (there were 4 tables open and we had a reservation t which they would not seat us for) and told us we are more than welcome to go sit outside in the cold while we wait for our friends she started to laugh and walked off. We were trying to decide what wine lounge to go to and opted on this place. What a disappointment. The female bartender watched us stand there and did not greet us. We were then offered a seat near the front door, there were three of us so it was cozy but tight. We didn't mind at all. Our server was super nice and friendly, however.... The other gentlemen who appeared to be a manager was very short and appeared to be bothered when my daughter asked for another orange wine. That said he just said I'll send your waiter. It was very telling that this business does not bother with customer service or perhaps this is the way they treat all customers. We did appetizers cheese, Brussel sprouts, olives, Caesar's salad and hamachi crudo. Three glasses of wine and a non alcoholic spritz. Beware our bill was over $265.00! Went here tonight and it was an odd vibe, rating 1 star simply bc everything is wildly over priced and you are seated within 4 inches of other people because the tables are stuffed in there like sardines. Italian chopped salad - disgustingly overpriced, an Italian chopped with **NO MEAT** and bell peppers subbed in to make it seem bulkier for $24 is criminal. Burger - good ish ? But why did I almost break my teeth on grisly bits? Also the bun was charred to a crisp. Wine - asinine... the prices on the wine made my stomach drop.... the cheapest wine was $18 per glass and the avg. glass was ~ $25... Ambiance - last but not least, if you'd like to be seated 1 inch from the party next to you, then THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU! Maybe you'll be as lucky as we were and be next to a couple who is vaping indoors the entire dinner. I heard more of other people's conversations than my own :) The waiter also went out of his way to kindly grab the back of my seat everytime he took a step behind me, which was a nice touch !!! Went here for the first time on recommendation from friends and we're not sure if we'll be back. At 6:45 on a Saturday and the place is mostly empty but fills up fairly quickly around 7:30. We got a nice little table in the back. The ambiance is interesting, empty coffee cans and Christmas lights line the ceiling with photographs scattered across the walls. At around 8pm they dimmed the lights so low that we were struggling to see each other across the table. Our server was nice and knowledgeable but spent more time walking around on his cellphone than coming by to take our order. We started with the salami burrata honey toast and the meatballs. The toast was excellent and the absolute winner of the meal. The meatballs were perfectly cooked however they had sausage that was seasoned with fennel which I really don't like but the acidity of the tomato cut back that flavor. For our entrees we got the burger and the bolognese. The burger was very tasty. The bolognese was also made with the same sausage but the fennel was so overpowering, I couldn't eat it. It tasted like a bowl of licorice. Everything was decently priced so we may give it a second chance. One thing to note, a 20% tip is automatically added to the total so make sure to double check your receipt before paying. read more

We stopped in on a rainy night for a birthday drink and were surprised to find several bar seats leaking from the ceiling. When we requested to move, the seats offered also had an active leak and a bucket on the floor. The suggestion to "sit closer and avoid leaning back" did not feel like a reasonable solution. We asked about sitting at an available two-top just for drinks, but were told they could not accommodate us due to reservations. Unfortunately, the interaction with staff felt dismissive rather than hospitable, and we ultimately left without staying. Marvin is super charming and lively, no matter when you're there. We celebrated my birthday dinner on a Wednesday night and the place was so lively! We were promptly seated for our 7:15pm reservation and service was perfect throughout the evening. The hamachi Crudo is stellar and must be ordered as is the burrata toast. The oysters weren't my favorite, but others in our party enjoyed them. The Caesar was a tad overly dressed for my liking, but again others seemed to enjoy it. For our entrees we loved our spicy vodka, bolognese and chicken parm! Portions were nice and the flavors were rich and hearty. We also got some amazing wines recommended by the staff! We ordered the fennel and arugula salad, which was super fresh and very tasty. The fried squash blossoms with marinara stuffed with cheese was definitely a must try. You have to get the rigatoni so much garlic we almost ordered a second one. the steak frites was cooked perfectly and was a great piece of meat. we added truffle and Parmesan to the fries which I would recommend if you want a little extra flavor. They also have a nice wine selection. If you're looking for great a meal with no interaction this is definitely the place to go. I think the restaurant could be doing a LOT better if the people here were actually nice. It seems like they're trying to sell a certain vibe or be exclusive, but honestly no one really gives that much of a f about Marvin to put up with it anymore. Being rude is not cool! Felt his wrist on my back. Every. Single. Time. Very annoying and rude. Food: Decently good. Comes out fairly quick. But they are priced a bit higher than similar restaurants in LA. Price: 20% mandatory service charge. We were just a table of 2. You only see this on parties 6+ usually. It's like they know their service sucks so they hit you with the mandatory tip. Beware. I finally had some time to check out Marvin! Even though I was somewhat wary due to the reviews on poor service, I have to say it wasn't that bad. There was one guy completely void of personality, but he wasn't rude by any means. After narrowing it down to pastas, I decided to try their Cacio e Pepe and as soon as the dish was put in front of me, I knew I made the correct choice. This was really good! The pepper was a little strong (which I hear is a good thing) but besides that, the flavor was excellent. When I asked for bread, the bartender was nice in letting me know it would be an additional charge, or she could just throw some together at no charge (minus the butter, etc.); this rustic bread was perfectly toasted and there was plenty of it. I would love to try any of their rigatoni pastas on a future visit, especially the spicy vodka version. There were quite a few surrounding parties ordering this, so I know it must be a good one. The only downfall is that 20% service charge; you're already paying an extra amount on top of the actual gratuity, which I'm sure a lot of people overlook. The staff took their time so that could be beneficial us to depending what you're looking for with a night out with friends or a dinner before you go out somewhere. The Hamachi Crudo stands out to me as an appetizer as well as zucchini blossoms. We also got the spicy rigatoni and the cacio e pepe which was a little too peppery for me and a lamb fussili, which is good if you really like Lam, I found the flavor to not be subtle. The food at Marvin is exceptional and delicious; from that standpoint alone, it'd easily be one of my favorite restaurants in this city. However, one simple, deceitful tactic consistently perpetrated by the waitstaff merits this 1-star review and this warning to other prospective guests. Marvin automatically applies a 20% service charge to every check. That in and of itself would be of little concern, even though the restaurant is not inexpensive and many of the waiters are rather cold and rude; the food and ambience typically merit a 20% tip regardless. However, what I absolutely despise is the fact that the automatically applied 20% tip is NEVER mentioned by the waitstaff; in fact, they effortfully attempt to hide it by delivering the itemized receipt face down under the merchant and customer copies (both face up, each with an open tip line and no indication of tip paid). In my last 5 times visiting, not once did the waiter point out that the tip was already applied, regardless of party size. My table always discusses this after one of us points it out, and we roll our eyes and laugh with unease at the fact that a majority of guests each night are intentionally duped into paying a 40% tip without any warning. That is unethical. I will happily take down this post should the owner instruct his team to change their ways. I hope they do. Marvin would easily be the best restaurant in the city if it were not for this one slimey practice by the waitstaff. read more

Sunday was my first time dining for dinner and we all had a great experience. French cuisine is in my top three favorites so I try to go to every single one all over Los Angeles and this is definitely one of the better ones I've been to, and I have already been to over 15. Our server Zeke was very polite and attentive. The vibe on the inside is a mix between a traditional French bistro and a casual cocktail bar. The east side of the restaurant is the whole bar whereas the west side is where all the tables are, as well as outside seating. For my starter I chose the Steak Tartare and it was very good. I wish there was more bread on the side to spread but the taste and quality of the meat was perfect. For my entrée I chose the grilled Branzino and was very impressed. It was two large pieces with smooth mashed potatoes and herb roasted asparagus as sides. I have been having too many desserts recently so I skipped the option last night but they had chocolate soufflé and a toffee date cake on their menu that I plan to get in the future. All around a good experience and someplace I would return. The pricing is fair and if you're a fan of French bistros you will like this one as well. Parking is also very easy depending on the day and time but I had absolutely no trouble for my 7PM reservation. read more

Steak tartare: Some of you might have figure out, but yes, I order steak tartare everywhere I go! It was fresh and the capers weren't overwhelming. Burrata honey salami toast: MUST GET! These were delightful! A little salty but sweet and the richness of the burrata finishes it off, I think I can just ... eat these all day. Cheese burger: My friend orders a burger everywhere she goes and Marvin was no exception. I was a little too full to try some but no one complained and it was completely done by the end of the dinner. Bolognese: I believe we went for the bolognese... it was a very hard decision between the bolognese or the spicy vodka but I remember it being delicious, this was also completely cleared by the end of the dinner. I honestly thought everything was good and the place was really cute. The servers were nice, it did get a little loud after 7-8PM. I recommend if you are in the area and want to have a quick drinks; not sure if they have great cocktails though we only had wine. Dining here before reading the reviews is very funny. We all had the same experience, it seems! Everything we ate was divine, with unexpectedly large portions! The lamb Ragú is a must, and I've never had such a full plate of crudo in Los Angeles. Service, however, has a lot of room for improvement. The team was attentive, which is why I leave four stars standing still. First step: an attitude check. The server approached and asked if we are ready, to which my mother said "I think we are looking at trying a bunch of small plates!" Most servers would suggest options, ask what you're in the mood for, etc. Ours said "then what do you want?" with a lovely scowl. Such a shame, really dampened our experience! read more
